The Chinese government has created a new social engineering scheme called “Sesame Credit” which looks and acts like a game, but it’s true purpose is to garner obedience to the state.
The system rates Chinese citizens on how closely they adhere to the party line. It pulls data from the internet: social media, online purchases and search histories. In this video Dan Dicks of Press For Truth shows how a voluntary “social credit” system for the West isn’t too far-fetched and with corporate-state media approval, it could be sold to the public fairly easily.

Things aren't looking so good for China's stock market.
The country's stocks are falling so fast that they're panicking investors and tripping automatic levers called "circuit breakers" that shut down the entire market when it's crashing. Two days ago, after the circuit breakers shut down trading, China closed its stock market early due to a steep decline. It's a bad sign, but not entirely unprecedented; that's happened in the United States too.
What happened on Thursday, however, might be a first. In all, the market stayed open for only 15 minutes.
China's stock market ceased trading after only a few minutes after the market lost 5% in value so quickly that trading was automatically halted. It's the second time in just a few days of 2016 trading that its new "circuit breaker" was tripped due to sharp declines. The pause is meant to give the market time to settle and hopefully avoid any panicked selling that would lead to a deeper crash that would cause more financial damage.

Travel video about destination China.
China’s Imperial City is located in the centre of its ancient Middle Kingdom, a gigantic and inscrutable empire beyond the Great Wall. The Imperial City is entered through the Gates of Heavenly Peace. After seven years of construction, Ming Emperor Zhu Di moved into his newly-established palace complex in which over eight thousand people lived in almost a thousand rooms. The palace served as both a residential and governmental seat to the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. A stone’s throw away from the old Summer Palace is the Garden of Harmonious Unity that was the favourite garden of the Emperor’s household who retreated to its cool lakeside shores during the humid months of summer. Close to Badaling the Great Wall Of China extends majestically across misty mountains. It is the largest Man-made structure in the world and was erected to protect the country from invasion from the North. The gigantic wall represented the division of two very different cultures. On one side the Central Asian Nomads and on the other the highly developed civilisation of the emerging Chinese Empire. Shanghai is a Gigantic City and a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city’s main focal point and is a combination of past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye catching buildings of a great city. Famous explorer Marco Polo referred to Suzhou as the ‘Venice of the East’, a city that is particularly famous for its gardens. Many of its extremely elegant buildings are remnants of a glorious past. Yunnan´s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest Of Shi Lin, a forest of rock that extends for 27,000 hectares. Hong Kong is a city of the superlative with glimmering skyscrapers that seem to take root in the sky and one elegant building after another with shining glass and hi-tech facades. China is a world within a world!

6) A tour around Guilin, China at night including night markets, street food, pagodas and lakes 晚上桂林
7) Taking the train in China from Hong Kong to Guangzho en route to Guilin travel video
So tonight is our very last night in Yangshuo, a charming little town in Southwestern China, so we're going to show you around the main strip.
So our first stop is going to be the street food market. I haven't eaten in maybe two hours, so it's time to get a snack.
If I had to choose between Guilin and Yangshuo the two most popular cities in this region it's definitely Yangshuo. It's a more historic town. It's a lot more pedestrian friendly and there are great
As we were wandering around the night market tonight we had lots of people come up to us and ask to take photos beside us. At least probably four or five times and we finally filmed the last one. It was really cool. We were like celebrities in China. Yeah, almost famous.
So, this market had some pretty cool souvenirs. We saw fake Chinese passports if you want to take one of those home. They also had combs carved out of ox bone. They had these stamps where you can get your Chinese name carved on them and then you can just sign documents that way which is pretty cool.
Today we are visiting a local hill tribe that just lives a few hours outside of Guilin and we've come here because this community is known for the women's long hair. They grow it out and it's almost a meter and a half long and we're actually going to be watching a performance where they spin their hair and wrap it up and show us how they wear it.
Today we're in between Guilin and Yangshuo and we're doing a special river cruise down the Li River.
So this tour is going to be an hour and a half long and we're going to get to enjoy some pretty stunning landscapes, so I'm pretty excited about it.
When I came here two years ago it was hazy and foggy. Now it's a gorgeous glorious day.
Here we are at the Longji Rice Fields which are located just outside of Guilin. We've had such good luck. Check out the weather and the views behind.
So we are hiking up to one of the viewing platforms. This is going to be tough because it's like forty degrees outside and we're been told it'll take 30 minutes to one hour depending on our pace. So I'm trying to stay hydrated. Audrey is going to have to workout
We've rented a couple of bikes and we've decided to spend our last morning exploring around the countryside areas of Yangshuo. They were pretty cheap. Just under two dollars for each bike.
So we finally made it to Guilin.
So this is the Guilin main square. It gets really busy here at night. Lots of shops, restaurants, eateries. You can do it all here.
Chinese singing.
So we are now at the lake and the main attraction are the these two pagodas that light up at night.
Background music playing.
Oh, that mapo tofu looks so good. Really generous sized portion.
Well, it's hard to believe but our time in Hong Kong has already expired. Today we're taking a train ride. Where are we going? We're crossing over into China.
We are in Guangzho. Apparently there are two train stations. We arrived at the one that is on the East End of the City and we had to get across town to the other and it was difficult but we need to keep going.
So right now we are in Guangzho station waiting for our train to Guilin. And we happen to be waiting in the VIP room.
There is no tea in this tea room.
We're going to Guilin.
Uh, we're looking for number ten.
So we're in the dining cart now getting ready to have dinner. Let's see what is on the menu if we can even read it. We barely got a seat here.
Decision time. So we did manage to find an English menu which makes things a lot easier.
Fish one. Tofu with pork. One. Okay. Rice. One Rice? Okay. Beer. One. Okay. Ah, green tea - one. okay.
So this is the friend fish with a sweet and sour sauce.
Good morning. We are almost in Guilin. Our train has been delayed about an hour and a half.

https://www.expedia.com/Hong-Kong.d178263.Destination-Travel-Guides
Hong Kong, a former British territory, is one of the most densely populated places in China and in the world. You’ll find quiet neighborhoods full of temples and a dazzling skyline loaded with shopping and dining opportunities.
Your Hong Kong tour must include visits to the many religious sites scattered around the city, where incense wafts from shrines and monasteries take over entire hillsides. You’ll have a marvelous time shopping in tax-free Hong Kong, where you’ll be able to find clothing, jewelry, furniture, and everything else under the sun.
Don’t forget about Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, which overlooks the stunning Victoria Harbor. From there, your Hong Kong sightseeing may detour to Central, the city’s main business district, which looks like something out of a sci-fi film. The observation deck atop the International Commerce Centre will show you fantastic views of the city.
Hong Kong isn’t all cityscape, of course; there are many gardens, parks, and other green spaces for you to explore. You’ll also find beaches, national parks, and quiet islands for you to indulge in natural beauty and serenity. This city truly has everything.

Shanghai - China Travel Guide http://goo.gl/Cl0qNG
Shanghai is the future all other Chinese cities aspire to reach. Forget creaking temples and dusty old palaces (there are plenty of them elsewhere); Shanghai is where people come to see modern China at its glimmering best.
This fast-paced city of towering skyscrapers is, in fact, not without its own significant history. Its glory days of the 1930s helped build Shanghai's reputation as a City of Sin. But to pause for too long at the city's past would be missing the point: Shanghai is all about the future face of the world's future super power, and coming here is to witness what makes the business end of China tick.
Perhaps best visited at the end of your trip to China, Shanghai offers history-tired tourists the chance to dine at glitzy restaurants, wine at funky cocktail bars and shop inside dazzling malls before resting up in the country's most impressive hotels.

Hong Kong Travel Video including some of the top things to do in Hong Kong along with the best attractions in Hong Kong, China.
Hong Kong is one of the most dynamic cities in all of Asia. From a travel perspective it offers numerous diverse options worth exploring.
Whether one is exploring Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Victoria Harbor or the New Territories, there are plenty of attractions to cover.
The following is a list of the top things to do in Hong Kong:
1) Avenue of Stars at Night in Kowloon (星光大道)
Wandering around Avenue of Stars at night is the perfect way to experience Hong Kong in the evening. Overlooking Victoria Harbour, this area has been modeled after the Hollywood Walk of Fame championing all of the celebrities involved in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. None is more famous than the Bruce Lee statue. This is also the perfect place to watch A Symphony of Lights laser show which happens daily at 8 pm.
2) Afternoon High Tea at the Peninsula
Sitting down for afternoon tea at the Peninsula is one of the more posh activities in Hong Kong. Expect to wait in line (we waited over 2 hours) for a table. You can get complete sets which include assorted finger food along with a drink. This is definitely not a budget activity.
3) Views of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak and Tram Ride (太平山)
Taking a tram ride up to Victoria Peak to experience the best vantage point of Hong Kong, Kowloon and Victoria Harbor is one of the top attractions in the city. Many come at night; however, we recommend coming in the afternoon on a weekday when you can enjoy having more personal space.
4) Star Ferry boat ride (天星小輪)
There are many different modes of transportation in Hong Kong; however, none are quite as authentic of an experience as taking Star Ferry from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon or vice versa. It's one of the cheapest ways to get around.
5) Junk Boat Ride
Taking a Junk boat ride around Victoria harbor offers some of the best views of the city. It's especially popular at night to take in A Symphony of Lights performance.
6) Hong Kong Park and Tea Appreciation Ceremony (香港公園)
To get away from all of the hustle and bustle check out Hong Kong Park for a tranquil escape. If you have time participate in a Chinese tea appreciation ceremony.
7) Sampan Boat Tour in Aberdeen (舢舨)
Taking a ride on a traditional Sampan boat allows you to experience what life is like for Chinese fishermen.
8) Eating Dim Sum (點心 - 点心)
One should not leave Hong Kong without first trying dim sum. These small sized bites are treats that are accompanied by a pot of Chinese tea.
9) Taking a night bus tour of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon
Taking a night bus tour allows you to visit distinct areas in both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon such as Mong Kok and Causeway Bay.

Travel video about destination Qingdao Beach in China.
When the Chinese want to get married, they come to Tsingtao : there’s nothing cooler than a wedding on the beach or in the bay. Even if it resembles a production line. Tsingtao was originally popular with the Germans, who introduced the city to beer at the beginning of the last century. The beaches here have only recently become accessible to every social class. On the sands, one encounters a surprising cross-section, those in their work clothes and business suits, and others who daringly sport a swimming costume, (although bikinis are rare). Many hesitate to take the plunge, because a lot of young Chinese quite simply can’t swim ! Rubber rings are therefore indispensable, and are carried, or worn around the waist, on the buses going to the beach. Some people are abandoning them, though, as they learn to swim : in 2008 Tsingtao will host the Olympic Games’ water sports events…

China Travel Guide http://bit.ly/12jcBNf
Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Xian, which was the first capital and the 10 biggest cities of China.
Xian was the first capital of China. The heart of the enormous empire once throbbed here. Rows of
imperial dynasties ruled from here over 11 centuries. This was the starting point of the famous Silk
Road and the city with its 1 million residents was considered a huge metropolis at that time. Although
the city lost its rank and influence after the revolution of Huang Chao in 875, it still belongs to the 10
biggest cities of China.
The Asian countries have always been famous for their handicrafts and China is no exception to this.
The making, coloring and processing of silk looks back on such ancient traditions as paper cutting, paper
folding or the making of --. Chinese calligraphy and wooden engravings are also famous together with
porcelain painting. In Xian, almost all fields of handicrafts are practiced, however the most well known
are the carvings made of semiprecious stones. From light green jade and deep green nephrite, mostly
little sculptures and ornaments are carved. The decorations and patterns of which imitate ancient
statues. There are many dragon representations but of course Buddha sculptures are also made in large
numbers.
China joined the monument and landscape protection program of the UNESCO in 1985. From 1987 until
these days, more than 10000 buildings have been declared monuments, 63 settlements have received
cityscape protection and 27 treasures have been recorded in the world heritage list. The long list
includes the imperial palace of Beijing, the summer palace, the temple of heaven, the Ming tombs, the
sections of the Great Wall around the capital and of course the terracotta army. This spectacle can be
found 1.5km east of the burial hill of Qin Shi Huang Di. The tomb of the strict ruler unifying China is 221
BC has not been excavated yet although there have been excavations in this 8 square kilometer area for
decades.
A farmer named Yang Gi Fa drilled a well from which water always escaped so he went down to the well
to check the reason. Do there, he found himself face to face with a frightful figure. However this figure
was not a monster or a ghost or even a skeleton or mummy but a clay statue which looked very real. In
communist China in 1974, people had to be very careful about what they should report to the
authorities and what not. After long pondering the farmer reported his finding to the museum of Xian
and he got 30 yuan as a reward. Archeologists found one of the most significant artifacts of the world
here, under the agricultural land.
In several cultures, for instance in Egypt or South America, it was a custom to bury the dead lord
together with all his people so that they could serve him even in the afterlife. From this custom, came
the -- in Egypt which is a little sculpture who works in place of his lord in the afterlife. Probably it was a
similar reason why this huge clay army followed their master to the grave. During the first excavations,
some three enormous chambers were found deep into the ground. The biggest of them is more than
14000 square meters. Inside this, the 6000 armed men stood ordered in military formation. The man
sized figures bore real weapons and accessories. Their makers didn't choose the easy way. They didn't
just pour clay into forms. They formed them individually by hand which is evident by the fact that the
face of all the figures have individual features. Maybe they really represented the actual people of the
army of that time.

Take a tour of Harbin Ice and Snow Festival in Harbin, China -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The wealth of snow and ice produced in northeastern China provides the perfect setting for a magical sight; the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.
This festival, which began in 1963, was stayed for a number of years by the Chinese Cultural Revolution, but was resumed again in 1985.
Each year the festival is themed and usually takes inspiration from Chinese fairy tales or noteworthy monuments around the world.
The festival displays an abundance of different nationalities and cultures both in the sculptures themselves, and the teams who craft them.
These elaborate and intricately carved sculptures can take a team of experienced sculptors the full month of the festival to complete.
Make the most of a cold day or brave a winters night when these massive creations come alive with vivacious lights, at the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.

Take a tour of Huanglong Scenic Area in Sichuan, China - part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Huanglong (hoo-ang-long) Scenic Area, in China, is a place of such incredible beauty that it is almost otherworldly.
Flowing through the floor of this valley is one of the tributaries of a river.
Limestone pools, many of which are lipped with golden color, have slowly formed within the waters of this river.
On a bright day, the shimmering pools look like scales on a dragon whose body is the river.
The valley's name -- Huanlong - means Yellow Dragon.
As the bright waters flow, many exotic and fascinating types of animals can be seen moving about the park here.

Attractions in Times Square: Upscale shopping and restaurants
Time Square, full of lights, packed with people an quint-essential big city experience. I am not talking about that Time Square. I am talking about this one. Hong Kong's Time Square. Hong Kong's Time Square may not have the abundance of neon lights of New York's Time Square, however it does rival the one in New York in terms of crowds and activity.
Located in the Cosway Bay area, this is the center of Hong Kong's commercial activity, especially in the evenings. You notice the magnitude of this place as soon as you walk in. This huge building here has major upscale brand outlets, restaurants and offices. On the lower levels the place caters to shopaholics. But only those who are big spenders.
They did not forget the food part here. There are plenty of restaurants on the upper floor. Time Square is more than just this mall. Some might say the real action is outside on the streets. This is where you experience everyday Hong Kong life. This place is absolutely buzzing with energy. There are about a million people here going about their daily activities. This is Rosanna Wilcox, showing you Hong Kong.

Is it August 2015 once more? In the first week of January, an astounding Chinese securities exchange crash by and by incited authorities to give remarkable jolt measures and degrade the yuan. Generally as some time recently, gyrations in China pushed worldwide markets profound into danger off mode, with selloffs in Asian, European, and U.S. values, and raw petroleum prospects. The determination is liable to be the same as it was last August, as well, as per Kasper Bartholdy, Head of Emerging Market Fixed Income Strategy for Credit Suisse's Global Capital Markets division. Hey Zhou: Remembering China's first premier through the people that knew him best.
This January 8th marked the 40th anniversary since former premier Zhou Enlai passed away. Zhou is perhaps best remembered as one of Mao's most trusted lieutenants. While at first glance he may appear to be have been one of Mao's many yes-men, he is beloved by many today for being able to do some good while avoiding being purged himself during the worst excesses of the Chairman's reign.
To commemorate his memory, Sina brings us a photo essay depicting the Premier in the eyes of the people whom he met during his long and historic life.
Zhang Shenfu (first from right), was the one who first introduced Zhou to the Communist Party. He recalls meeting a young Zhou Enlai, energetically involved in revolutionary activities while studying abroad in Paris. Zhou would go on to join the ranks of the infant CCP in the spring of 1921, months before the Party's official establishment. Here the two are pictured together with Liu Shaoqi in Berlin.
Zhou Enlai's wife, Deng Yingchao, remembers that when the two wanted to wed there was no place where they could formally register, nor were there any witnesses. The young couple chose instead to have a simple wedding without a formal ceremony. The two first met in 1919 while participating in the May Fourth Movement, and eventually formally married in Guangzhou in 1925.
American journalist Theodore H. White remembers meeting Zhou at his residence in Chongqing, a dirty hovel in a poverty stricken area. When it was wet and rainy, the alleys would fill with muddy water, and the reception room in Zhou's home would be covered with the mud tracked in by his guests.
Zhang Xueliang, the "Young Marshall," the son of a warlord and later general for first the Nationalists and then the Communists, spoke of Zhou admiringly. "Zhou was an amazing individual who was always in control and always spoke with reason. He could handle any problem he was faced with, and he was well known and I admired him," Zhang once said. In this picture from 1945, Zhou presides over a military meeting while working with the Nationalist government.
In 1949, Nationalist general Zhang Zhizhong recalled Zhou as a hardworking individual. When he urged his friend to arrange to have an assistant, Zhou replied that the work was simply his duty, and that he need not worry about it. In 1945 Zhou participated in talks with US Secretary of War Patrick J. Hurley, Zhang and Mao Zedong in Chongqing.
Former American Ambassador to China John Leighton Stuart once called Zhou an astute and resourceful individual, possessing infinite charisma.
In the wake of the collapse of three party talks, American general and special envoy George Marshall lamented that the Nationalists under Chiang Kaishek did not treat Zhou with the respect that a man of his caliber deserved.
Harkening back to a time when relations between the Nationalist and the Communists were more agreeable, Chiang once thanked Zhou for helping to save his life after he and his entourage were taken captive by the "Little Marshall" in a bid to coerce Chiang into forming the. Second United Front with the Communists. In 1946, Zhou represented the Communist Party during a national consultative conference.
Sun Yatsen's wife, Soong Ching-ling, recalled that Zhou was a very humble man. "Whatever the peasants ate, he ate too. His clothes were often worn thin and covered in patches. He would often eat his meals with his driver, and would dine together with the wait staff during flights," she said. In this photo from 1950, Zhou is depicted alongside Liu Shaoqi and Soong Qingling in her Beijing residence.
The tenth Panchen Lama, pictured here with Zhou, was quoted as crediting his making through the Cultural Revolution to Zhou's kindness and concern for his life.Former Secretary-General of the United Nations Dag Hammarskj?ld once said that compared to Zhou, he was a mere. simpleton. This photo from 1954 shows Zhou in Geneva while attending an international conference.
Actress Shu Xiuwen saw Zhou and his wife as parental figures, helping to teach her the values ??of "revolutionary principles.". Upon hearing of Zhou Enlai's death in 1976, North Korean leader Kim Il Sung wept openly, reportedly to the point that he was unable to have an eye operation scheduled later the same day. Here the two are seen in a photo taken in Pyongyang during a 1958 state visit.
.Hearing That Mao was going to choose Lin Biao as his successor in 1966, Marshal Chen Yi confided in Zhou that as Premier and Mao's right-hand man, it should be he, not Lin who gets promoted. During the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, Zhou vigorously voiced support for Chen, going so far as to dare anyone who wanted to go after Chen that they would have to go through him first.
Deng Xiaoping said this of Zhou during the Cultural Revolution:
wn.com/Hey Zhou Remembering China's First Premier Through The People That Knew Him Best

China sent a Belarusian telecom satellite into intended orbit from southwest China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 00:57 Beijing time on Saturday.
The satellite successfully separated from the rocket at 01:23, and the solar panel opened 38 minutes later.
"This launch is highly accurate in orbit injection, about several kilometers, comparable to a target shooting right in the middle. The Belarusian experts and technicians on site are very satisfied," said Wang Zemin, chief engineer of Xichang Satellite Launch Center.
"The Belarusian side is amazed at the Chinese experts' high-level expertise, and we trust China very much. We have a very broad cooperation perspective, and we believe we will have very good cooperation. Now our priority is to make this satellite put into use as soon as possible," said Gurulev Sergey Petrovich, chairman of the State Military-Industrial Committee of Belarus.
The satellite, carried by a Long March-3B rocket, is Belarus' first communication satellite. This was also the first time that China launched a satellite for a European country.
The Belintersat-1 was built by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. with a designed life of 15 years.
It will be put into a geostationary orbit 51.5 degrees east longitude to provide a wide range of telecommunication services, including satellite TV, radio broadcasting and broadband Internet access.
This was China's first orbital mission of 2016 and the 223rd launch of the Long March carrier rocket. More on:

Revolution and its sizzling Economic Revolution. But you haven't heard about its other great social upheaval - the Chinese Sexual Revolution - and like everything in that country it's happening at warp speed. It's China's version of the 60s revolution - on steroids.
China's Sexual Revolution is the world's first glimpse - often using secret cameras - into this forbidden new China. It's a surprising portrait of the Chinese today: the new free love generation that's left their parents in shock; the booming sex industry that's creating an HIV crisis; the new generation of career women and feminists that suddenly wants it all - while millions of men feel left out.
This long untold story goes back to the days of Chairman Mao, who made sexuality a great taboo. He ordered everyone to wear unisexual Mao suits, and forbid women from wearing sexy clothing, getting stylish haircuts, or even wearing make-up. Men and women were expected to be comrades - not lovers - though Mao himself enjoyed an emperor's sex life, seeking virgins to retain his "youthö".
China's sexual libido was bottled up for 50 years, but now its bursting loose, with dramatic effects on marriage, personal freedom and the government itself.

Smog levels in Beijing this year were almost seven times the maximum exposure recommended by the World Health Organization. That makes the smog a matter of life and death.
In the first quarter of this year more than 90 percent of Chinese cities failed to meet the government's own air-quality standards.
Air pollution contributes to 17 percent of all deaths in China. As many as 1.6 million people died this year as a result of air pollution, the Berkeley Research Group estimates. That's about 4,400 people dying every day.
But what is the government doing to tackle the issue? And why has it failed to strike a balance between economic growth and public health?

For the second time in a week stocks have fallen on China's stock exchanges, causing an emergency shutdown and intensifying concerns about the health of the world's second largest economy.
Trading was frozen on both the Shanghai and the Shenzhen stock exchanges on Monday and Thursday after stocks plunged by more than 7 percent.
The drop, which is being linked to poor economic figures, tensions after North Korea's nuclear test and the spat between the Arab world and Iran, comes amid further data showing that China's economy is slowing down.
But what is heightening fears is that markets have continued to fall despite government intervention.
The feeze in trading, also known as a "circuit breaker" was introduced last summer after more than $3.2 trillion was wiped off China's markets in three weeks - an amount more than 10 times the size of the entire Greek economy.
In theory the circuit breaker should curb volatility, but it seems this week's losses may have been triggered by a depreciation in the Chinese currency, the Yuan.
Charles Horne, an economy portfolio manager with consultancy firm China Policy, joins Counting the Cost to discuss the currency devaluation and the general lack of confidence in the Chinese economy.
Saudi-Iran and the coming 'Oil Wars'
Relations between Saudi Arabia and its regional rival Iran have reached an all-time low after Riyadh severed diplomatic ties with Tehran.
The escalation in tensions came just a few days after the kingdom controversially executed a prominent Shia cleric.
Regional heavyweights, both countries hold one-quarter of the world's proven oil reserves, but have been battling over regional influence.
Mamdouh Salameh, an international oil economist and a World Bank consultant on energy, joins the programme to discuss the Saudi-Iran crisis and whether oil could become the frontline in a new Cold War.
Sri Lanka opens doors to foreign investors
Twenty-five years after a brutal civil war, Sri Lanka is beginning to see a big increase in tourism numbers.
In 2015, almost 1.8 million people came to the formerly troubled island, up nearly 18 percent on 2014.
Elected a year ago, the government is now trying to turn Sri Lanka into a destination for foreign investors - the most important being foreigners. Individuals and companies will now be allowed to own Sri Lankan land.
Anushka Wijesinha, the chief economist at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, joins the programme to discuss the new investment drive.

Chinese markets plunged on Monday in the biggest loss since the financial crash of 2007.
There is growing concern among investors that the world's second-biggest economy is declining more than previously thought. The government has injected $100 billion into banks to help spur the economy.
Earlier, China's central bank devalued the yuan in a move seen as a bid to help exports.
But what is causing this decline? And what are the ramifications for the global economy?

Crackdown: The report on Uigher protests that broke relations between China and Australia
Xinjiang province has long been the site of ethnic tensions between the Uighur population and Chinese rule. Amid fears that fanatical Uighurs are aligning with foreign extremists, the state crackdown is fiercer than ever.
"A normal person wouldn't raise a butcher's knife to the elderly and children. Can we still call them human beings?", asks policeman Ainiding Memtimin. In May he was on the scene when a group of extremists threw explosives into a busy Urumqi marketplace, killing 39 people. A Uighur himself, like most locals he is baffled by such drastic violent acts. Yet the tensions that have simmered in this region are sitting on a knife edge. "Injustice is everywhere here, but we can't talk about it", says one Uighur farmer in a snatched interview. On Xinjiang's highways, cars are now being stopped for full airport-style security checks. The government keeps a close eye on religious institutions and veils for women and beards for men are actively discouraged. Teaching in the Uighur language is disappearing in schools and it's almost non-existent at universities. And it isn't just the Uighurs feeling the crackdown; enormous numbers of Han Chinese have been pressed into the province to water down the Uighurs' presence and influence. In some towns, payments are being offered for inter-marriage. But is China's central government using a sledgehammer to crack a nut? This report doggedly pushes past the press restrictions and government minders to tackle this difficult question.

The Qin empire was founded at end of a war between a few powers that had lasted for more than two centuries. And it was the result of a development that created a highly centralized bureaucratic state out of a loose feudal system. While the rule of the two Qin emperors endured not even two decades, it marks nonetheless the beginning of a more than two thousand years long history of a centralized state with an emperor being the head of thousands of officers in a state with a likewise uniform culture.
Literature, thought, religion and philosophy
Apart from his great achievements that were actually the base for the foundation also of the Han empire, the First Emperor was blamed to have burned the books (fen “burning” might be a writing error for the character jin “prohibiting”) and buried alive the (Confucian) scholars. The only books that were not forbidden, are writings about medicine, herbs, divining and agriculture. Inspite of later slanderings by Han time scholars which made him not only a murderer but also a bastard of a merchant, arts and thinking were still going on under the First Emperor and prepared the great flourishing of literature and philosophy under the Han Dynasty.
Although the practical polity of the Qin rulers was legist and thus severe, bureaucratic and austere, the inscriptions in the steles the First Emperor had erected, also show that Confucian thinking like filial piety, humanity and righteousness of the ruler was still going on. The emperor himself was very interested in Daoist practices to prolong his life or to gain immortality. He sent out an expedition to search for the islands of immortality called Penglai. Generations of scholars tried to find out what country was meant with “Penglai” , some say, Japan, some even argue Penglai was America. After the proclamation as the First Emperor, he changed the official colors to black according to the theory of the Five Elements and their cosmic influence. Metors, flood and drought was a heavenly hint to him as well as it has been to the former Zhou kings. A comprehensive anthology of philosophical thinking around 250 BC is the “Spring and Autumn collection of Master Lü” Lüshi Chunqiu, compiled by the chancellor Lü Buwei.
Like the Zhou Dynasty, the Qin Dynasty’s homelands were in the far west, between nomadic tribes, giving it probably more warfare energy than the people of the states in the Yellow River basin. One king of Qin is said to have died from an injury sustained during a contest in lifting a bronze vessel.
Hundred Schools of Thought
In the turbulent Spring and Autumn Period (770-476BC) and Warring States Period (475-221BC), many schools of thought were flourishing. The four most influential schools of thought that evolved during this period were Confucianism, Taoism, Mohism, and Legalism. There were also other schools like Yin & Yang, Eclectics, Logicians, Coalition persuaders and Militarism. The hundred schools of thought showed the fierce political and class struggles for survival among regional wars between the rising landed class and slaveholder class. The flouring thoughts intensified activities and debates in the intellectual and ideology system in ancient China and exerted great influence on Chinese culture.
Confucianism
Confucius was the founder of Confucianism. He advocated a set of moral code on basis of five merits: benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trustworthiness. Among them, benevolence was considered as the cornerstone, which stands for faithfulness, filial piety, tolerance and kindness. He also requested people to keep in good harmony with each other and establish a community ruled by standard manners and behavior.
Mencius (372-289BC) was a Confucian in the Warring States Period (475-221BC). He repeatedly tried to convince rulers that the ruler should cultivate moral perfection in order to set a good example to the people and the ruler who governed benevolently would earn the respect of the people. He held the view that human nature was fundamentally good as everyone is born with the ability to recognize what is right and act upon it. He also believed that people were more important than rulers.
