Summary:
After a warm introduction from Bill Graham, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took to the Winterland stage the night before the revered venue would be closed forever with a capstone set by the Grateful Dead on New Year's Eve. Petty was a perfect installment to drive home the final days of Winterland and was very well-received by an audience of young San Franciscans, keeping his vibe upbeat but also tapping into some of the despondency that makes him so accessible as a musician to fans worldwide. Early in their career, Petty and the Heartbreakers only had two albums under their belts at the time of this show, the self-titled debut in '76 and the 1978 follow-up You're Gonna Get It!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers kick things off with "Surrender" before launching into "Anything That's Rock 'N' Roll" and proceed to play an hour and a half of early hits, carving out their signature sound of rollicking heartland rock to the Winterland audience. "Casadega" is a pretty, lesser-known ode about a town in Florida, and then Petty gets into the rest of his set with many of the favorites that have made him a household name: "I Need to Know," "Refugee," "Listen To Her Heart," "American Girl," and "Breakdown," all renditions of classic songs that don't, at this early stage of their career, bear the stamp of time that today weathers many Petty compositions. Petty chats with the audience, telling a funny story about a card game the night before introducing "another new song, Refugee."
Tom Petty grew up in Gainesville, Florida and embraces an all-American sensibility in his songwriting, which recalls that of Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and Bruce Springsteen. Much of his compositions have a raucous vibe but are rooted in strong characters and stories of the downtrodden heroes of our culture. At 17, Petty left school to join Mudcrutch, who then relocated to LA just before breaking up. Petty remained active with some other musical ensembles before honing his songwriting skills with the Heartbreakers, and in 1976 the band released their self-titled debut, which was first a hit in England before American audiences caught on. A few years later, they released their breakthrough album, Damn the Torpedoes which spent seven weeks at number two on the US charts. And the rest, as they say, is history, and today Petty is one of rock's most respected, enduring, and best loved performers.

Venerable L.A. guitar shop McCabe's has seen more than its share of highlights over the years, with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and Cat Power among the artists who've graced the stage in the back of the guitar shop. Add another to that list as 150 lucky fans on Saturday night got, what the evening's performer J.J. Cale called, "a real big treat" in the form of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers.
Cale, the veteran Oklahoma singer/songwriter, was playing the second of his two sold-out shows in the tiny room when halfway through the set, he brought out Petty and Campbell for a couple of songs.
"They were across the street drinking, I went over to drink with them, said, 'I'm playing across the street,' and here they are," Cale told the crowd. What no one knew though was that a couple of songs would turn into half the set. After engaging in a sing-along version of 'Crazy Mama' and then 'After Midnight,' featuring a sterling Campbell solo, Cale told another story as way of introduction.
"We were sitting backstage talking and I said, 'Tom, you want to sing one?'" Cale said. Petty picked 'I'd Like to Love You, Baby,' which Cale said created one problem. "I'd never played it live and I told him, 'I don't remember it.' Tom said, 'I'll show you.' So if you can believe it, Tom Petty was backstage showing me one of my songs," Cale said, laughing.
Petty sat next to Cale, who played with ease as he wove stories throughout his delivery of blues and rock with sublime grace. It made it easy to understand why even a big star like Petty seemed suitably humbled to be up there alongside Cale.

Release notes:
FM broadcast captures Tom Petty’s complete 1993 homecoming concert, his first show in Gainesville, Florida for 20 years. Following the breakup of Heartbreakers Mudcrutch in 1975, Tom Petty and former band-mates Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell, joined up with some other Gainesville musicians, bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch, to become Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, in 1976. But, even then, success was not immediate, and they had many struggles ahead.
When their first album was released in November 1976, it initially received little attention, selling only a few thousand copies over the initial months. They released two singles, ‘Breakdown’ and ‘American Girl’, and both failed to chart in the US. Apparently, potential punters were confused; they looked like a new wave band (the album cover photo especially), but the music was pure rock n’ roll with a definite ’60s throwback style.
Fortunately, however, the UK seemed to ‘get it’, and they became popular there, with the album climbing to #24 on the British charts. Slowly, after news of their success in Britain, the album began picking up interest in the US, finally entering the Billboard charts almost a full year after its initial release. ‘Breakdown’ was re-released too, and this time made it into the top 40.
Back in Gainesville, the community was very supportive and proud of Petty’s success. However, by the late ’80s, there was also some growing resentment, that Tom had forsaken his hometown, that now that he had made it big, he rarely came back to his local fans and his roots there. Thus, the show presented here, from 1993, represented his homecoming to Gainesville, his first major concert there since packing up his van and leaving with Mudcrutch, almost 20 years before.
This show was just prior to the release of his greatest hits album and while he was in the process of moving to a new label. The greatest hits album also included two new recently recorded songs; ‘Mary Jane’s Last Dance’ and a cover of Thunderclap Newman’s ‘Something in the Air’, both of which are included in this show. And the show was broadcast on the radio nationwide, in superb FM quality. So, here is Tom Petty’s triumphant, yet somewhat overdue, return to Gainesville. Although some of the circulating FM versions of the show are shortened substantially, this is the full show in all its glory.
.
Thanks to popsakov for sharing the show on the net.

Warren Zanes discusses his interviews with Tom Petty for his book Petty: The Biography.
ABOUT THE BOOK
An exhilarating and intimate account of the life of music legend Tom Petty, by an accomplished writer and musician who toured with Petty
No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write.
Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise. From meeting Elvis, to seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, to producing Del Shannon, backing Bob Dylan, putting together a band with George Harrison, Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne, making records with Johnny Cash, and sending well more than a dozen of his own celebrated recordings high onto the charts, Tom Petty's story has all the drama of a rock and roll epic. Now in his mid-sixties, still making records and still touring, Petty, known for his reclusive style, has shared with Warren Zanes his insights and arguments, his regrets and lasting ambitions, and the details of his life on and off the stage.
This is a book for those who know and love the songs, from "American Girl" and "Refugee" to "Free Fallin'" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," and for those who want to see the classic rock and roll era embodied in one man's remarkable story. Dark and mysterious, Petty manages to come back, again and again, showing us what the music can do and where it can take us.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Warren Zanes holds a PhD in visual and cultural studies from the University of Rochester. He was a member of the Del Fuegos, and continues to record music. His work has appeared in The Oxford American, and he has served as a V.P. at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is currently the Executive Director of Little Steve Van Zandt's Rock and Roll Forever Foundation.

Veteran rocker Tom Petty isn’t pulling any punches with his new song “Playing Dumb.”
In an interview with Billboard magazine, Petty said that he wrote the song about the decades of child sex abuse in the Catholic church and the elaborate lengths that priests and their leaders have gone to cover up the crimes.
“I’m fine with whatever religion you want to have,” Petty said, “but it can’t tell anybody it’s OK to kill people, and it can’t abuse children systematically for God knows how many years.”
Petty went on to say that he doesn’t understand why people continue to donate to the church, which has paid out millions of dollars in legal settlements to the victims of child-molesting priests.
“If I was in a club, and I found out that there had been generations of people abusing children, and then that club was covering that up, I would quit the club. And I wouldn’t give them any more money,” he said.
“Religion seems to me to be at the base of all wars,” said the Florida-born singer and guitarist. “I’ve nothing against defending yourself, but I don’t think, spiritually speaking, that there’s any conception of God that should be telling you to be violent. It seems to me that no one’s got Christ more wrong than the Christians.”
Petty’s career has spanned more than 30 years, spawning multiple gold and platinum records, including the hit singles “Refugee,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “Won’t Back Down.” He has performed as a solo artist, with his band the Heartbreakers and as a member of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys alongside rock legend Roy Orbison, ELO founder Jeff Lynne and George Harrison of the Beatles.
