The Glyn Johns Method is a super popular way of recording drums, made famous by Mr. Johns work with Led Zeppelin. However, there is one major issue that I have found with the technique while using it in one of my own sessions, and I'd like to share it with you.
How come no one has talked about it? I'm not sure, but for me it really messed up the mix and I had to ditch the stereo set up entirely and go down to the single overhead microphone for a mono mix.

Glyn Johns (born 15 February 1942, Epsom, Surrey, England) is a British musician, recording engineer and record producer.
He has worked with such artists as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Easybeats, The Band, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Eric Clapton, The Clash, The Steve Miller Band, Small Faces, Spooky Tooth, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Blue Öyster Cult, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Midnight Oil, New Model Army, Belly, Joe Satriani, Ronnie Lane, Rod Stewart with Faces, Joan Armatrading, Buckacre, Gallagher and Lyle, Georgie Fame, Family, Helen Watson, Fairport Convention, Humble Pie and many others.
In the 1960s, while associated with the rock band The Presidents, Johns began working as a recording studio engineer at IBC Studios, Portland Place, London and was able to take the band in during weekends and try his skills at production and recording. The Presidents was his first true production work and some of the original tracks are available to hear and record at the Sound Bite Page on The President's web site www.the-presidents.org.uk. In 1969, Johns was called upon to rescue the troublesome Get Back sessions for The Beatles. Johns compiled several versions of the album, which were all rejected by the band, before the project was eventually turned over to producer Phil Spector. Spector's version became the released album, which was retitled Let It Be.

Keith Richards (born 18 December 1943) is an English musician and songwriter, and a founder member of The Rolling Stones. Rolling Stone magazine said Richards has created "rock's greatest single body of riffs", and has named him the 4th greatest guitarist of all time. Fourteen songs written by Richards and songwriting partner Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones' lead vocalist, are listed among Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Richards' notoriety for illicit drug use stems in part from several drug busts during the late 1960s and 1970s.
Keith Richards is the only child of Bert Richards and Doris Dupree Richards. He was born at Livingston Hospital in Dartford, Kent. His father was a factory worker injured in World War II during the Normandy invasion.
Richards' paternal grandparents were socialists and civic leaders whose family originated from Wales. His maternal grandfather, Augustus Theodore Dupree, who toured Britain with a jazz big band, "Gus Dupree and his Boys", fostered Richards' interest in guitar.

The Glyn Johns Method is a super popular way of recording drums, made famous by Mr. Johns work with Led Zeppelin. However, there is one major issue that I have found with the technique while using it in one of my own sessions, and I'd like to share it with you.
How come no one has talked about it? I'm not sure, but for me it really messed up the mix and I had to ditch the stereo set up entirely and go down to the single overhead microphone for a mono mix.

Let It Be is the twelfth and final studio album released by the English rock band the Beatles. It was released on 8 May 1970 shortly after the group announced their break-up.
Most of Let It Be was recorded in January 1969, before the recording and release of the album Abbey Road. For this reason, some critics and fans, such as Mark Lewisohn, argue that Abbey Road should be considered the group's final album and Let It Be the penultimate. Let It Be was originally intended to be released before Abbey Road during mid-1969 as Get Back, but the Beatles were unhappy with this version, which was mixed and compiled by Glyn Johns, and it was temporarily shelved. A new version of the album was created by Phil Spector in 1970 and finally released as Let It Be, serving as the album for the 1970 motion picture of the same name. While three songs from the sessions were released as singles before the album's release, "Get Back"/"Don't Let Me Down" and "Let It Be", the songs were remixed by Spector for the album and "Don't Let Me Down" was not included.
Despite a mixed review from Rolling Stone magazine at the time of its release, the album was ranked number 86 in the magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2003. This was, however, adjusted to #392 in the 2012 version.
Let It Be... Naked was released in 2003, an alternative version of the album stripping much of Phil Spector's production work and using some different versions of songs.

Our Process:
We play for about 45-minutes to an hour where we run through new stuff we are working on, old favorites, and just basically hone our brand of rock & roll. Just the 2 of us with no post production other then level adjustments. We play through 1 sometimes 2 amps and a small PA in the room.
We record directly into a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 (4 focusrite pre's for vocals and guitar mics and 4 drum mics passing through a Mackie 1202vlz into the other 4 channels on the focus rite) connected to a mac running Logic X. We have a preset project template which contains some eq, reverb, and delay effects so most of the later jams all have decent quality. The very, very early ones use a much different configuration.

- Sennheiser e835 vocal mic
- Shure SM57 (on vox ac30 right speaker)
- AKG c1005 (on vox ac30 left speaker)
- Shure SM57 (on snare)
- homemade subkick mic made from 6" speaker on bass drum resonate head mixed with a cheap Samson vocal mic sitting inside bassdrum pointed at beater head
- (2) MXL V67G condensor mics (setup in Glyn Johns configuration)

Full recording of our rehearsal night jam session on January 15th 2015. This is an archive of an audio recording we made prior to really nailing down the process. We played mostly the songs we recorded for our December 2014 release "Sundays". This was our first session after taking a break for the holidays.

Our Process:
We play for about 45-minutes to an hour where we run through new stuff we are working on, old favorites, and just basically hone our brand of rock & roll. Just the 2 of us with no post production other then level adjustments. We play through 1 sometimes 2 amps and a small PA in the room.
We record directly into a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 (4 focusrite pre's for vocals and guitar mics and 4 drum mics passing through a Mackie 1202vlz into the other 4 channels on the focus rite) connected to a mac running Logic X. We have a preset project template which contains some eq, reverb, and delay effects so most of the later jams all have decent quality. The very early ones use a much different configuration.
Microphones:
- Sennheiser e835 vocal mic
- Shure SM57 (on vox ac30 right speaker)
- AKG c1005 (on vox ac30 left speaker)
- Shure SM57 (on snare)
- homemade subkick mic made from 6" speaker on bass drum resonate head mixed with a cheap Samson vocal mic sitting inside bassdrum pointed at beater head
- (2) MXL V67G condensor mics (setup in Glyn Johns configuration)
Equipment:
