(c)1997 NFL; 21st Century FOX
We're halfway through the 1997 season, where the contenders begin to separate from the pack. We open with JB, Terry, Howie and Ronnie (after Dick Ervasti does his opening spiel) and a brief snippet of Cowboy guard Nate Newton poking fun at Howie Long's acting career (with Howie getting a quick plug for his movie "Firestorm").
GAME PREVIEWS (Snickers "FOX Watch"):
1. Eagles-Cowboys; Dallas enters game without fullback Daryl Johnston, left tackle Mark Tuinei, defensive tackle Chad Hennings and strong safety Darren Woodson. The Eagles came in pretty banged up too, missing wide receiver Chris T. Jones, cornerback Bobby Taylor and defensive tackle Jon Harris. (Pat Summerall)
2. 49ers-Saints; 49ers enter this game on a 6-game win streak thanks to their league-leading rushing attack while Steve Young still led the league in passer rating (and we get a good shot of Young's bald spot) (Kevin Harlan/Jerry Glanville {who makes a remark one would have considered heresy - saying the 49ers were better without Jerry Rice [out with an injury suffered in the Week 1 game vs. Tampa Bay]})
STORIES
1. James Brown issues a reminder that the Bears-Dolphins game scheduled for that day was moved to the following night due to the Florida (now Miami) Marlins (who shared what was by this time called Pro Player Stadium then) losing to the Cleveland Indians 4-1 to force the 7th and deciding game that night (which the Marlins won to clinch the World Series 3-2). The move ended up creating an impromptu Monday Night Football doubleheader in which that game went only to the regions around Chicago and Miami; while the rest of the country got the only Super Bowl rematch to air on Monday Night Football when ABC carried the games; with the defending champion Green Bay Packers playing the New England Patriots.
2. Back in Hollywood, the guys discuss the work that the 49ers have done in the turnaround without Jerry Rice.
3. JB mentions a story about how the Denver Broncos were unable to leave for Buffalo due to a snowstorm until Saturday afternoon, resulting in their not arriving until overnight...for a game vs. the Bills scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST
4. Minnesota Vikings head coach Dennis Green was still upset with the team ownership due to some members of the ownership wanting to dump Green in the 1996 season in favor of newly-departed Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz, and in his "No Room for Crybabies" book threatened a lawsuit unless the pro-Holtz faction sold their shares of the team to him (Brown)
5. On Tap; Terry Bradshaw's interview with Nate Newton (allowing for another joke about the Cowboys' up-and-down season by Dick Ervasti); Ronnie Lott's "Woo" hits and Pam Oliver's interview with Viking running back Robert Smith.
5. JB and Terry interview Packers head coach Mike Holmgren
6. Panel discussion of the quarterback duel in the (main) MNF game between Brett Favre and Drew Bledsoe
7. Pam Oliver interviews Viking running back Robert Smith, who was playing the first season of his career up to then without missing large chunks of time due to injuries
8. Panel discussion on the Vikings-Buccaneers game (comparing Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer)
9. Terry Bradshaw interviews Cowboy guard Nate Newton; quarterback Troy Aikman; running back Emmitt Smith and head coach Barry Switzer about the inconsistent play of Dallas that season
10. Ronnie Lott's "Woo" hits (showing a collection of hard hits - apparently the requirements were "as long as it didn't cause an injury or result in a flag" - similar to ESPN's old "Jacked Up" segment. That said, probably a good number of the ones that were okay then would lead to a penalty nowadays)
11. The guys go out to the little field on the side of the studio, and Ronnie explains the proper technique to avoid a neck injury to any kids watching (presumably this section has been retired as Terry and Howie have gotten older)
13. Final thoughts: Ronnie hopes the 49ers offensive line protects Steve Young; Howie mentions that Viking defensive tackle John Randle won't have to deal with double-teams with the arrival of Jerry Ball back in shape and Terry mentions how the Bucs (coached by former teammate Tony Dungy) needed a win over Minnesota to avoid a three-game losing streak
14. JB clarifies the Bears-Dolphins substitution conga: the Orlando market (watching on WOFL) gets Cowboys-Eagles as their substitute for Bears-Dolphins; while everyone else scheduled to get that game would see the Vikings-Buccaneers

(c)1997 National Football League; FOX Sports - 21st Century FOX
In this intro, we see FOX NFL Sunday host James Brown toss to Pat and John at the Vet for this Week 9 game between the Philadelphia Eagles (3-4 coming in) and the 4-3 Dallas Cowboys in a battle to stay with the 5-3 New York Giants and 4-4 Washington Redskins in what was then a 4-way dogfight for the NFC East lead.
Much of the focus in the intro was the recent string of down-to-the-wire finishes for games involving these teams (the infamous 1995 game where Barry Switzer called a run on 4th and inches deep in their own territory with the game tied at 17, Emmitt got stuffed, the officials rule the 2:00 warning took place before the snap, the Cowboys run the EXACT same play; get the EXACT same result and then-Eagle kicker Gary Anderson connected on the game-winning field goal; the 1996 game at Texas Stadium where linebacker James Willis stole a Troy Aikman pass in the end zone, then lateraled to cornerback Troy Vincent at the Philadelphia 10 yard line, where Vincent raced the remaining 90 yards for the clinching touchdown in their 31-21 win; and the first meeting of the 1997 season when a late Eagle drive during the Week 3 Monday night game vs. Dallas was foiled when punter Tom Hutton - holding for a potential game-winning field goal attempt by Eagle - and former Cowboy - kicker Chris Boniol - mishandled the snap; allowing Dallas to escape 21-20).
As for this game, Philadelphia would come back to win 13-12 off an 8 yard touchdown pass from Rodney Peete to tight end Chad Lewis with under a minute to play. The win didn't help things much for the Eagles, who went 2-4-1 during the 2nd half of their season, but helped set the stage for the Cowboys' season to fall apart at the seams; as Dallas won only 2 of their last 8 to miss the playoffs for the first time since 1990, culminating in head coach Barry Switzer (who had increasingly been at odds with Troy Aikman among other issues) resigning after the season.
Two quick notes: Most of the game was recorded over with a TNT airing of "Support Your Local Gunfighter" around December 1997, but I do have part of the 2nd half and a partial postgame report (the tape is either in storage or boxed up, not sure which).
Also, starting with this game I'll be adding links to the boxscore to all future sports game intros.

A highlight film of the 1996-97 National Football League season, leading up to the conference championship games.
This came off of a Super Bowl XXXI-XL DVD collection I own. I have no idea when, where, or even IF this ever aired on television, but if it did, it had to have been during the week leading up to the Super Bowl. It may have aired on FOX hours before kickoff that day, but I have no data to support this.
The point is, watch this if only for the wonderful slow-motion film sequences and brilliant synchronization with orchestral music, tropes that NFL Films is known for. On top of that, enjoy one of the craziest years in NFL history, where two second-year expansion teams made it to the conference championships, some nobody named Terry Allen led the league in rushing touchdowns, and the Baltimore Ravens actually had the worst pass defense of all teams.
Narrated by Earl Mann.

In 1986, MJ was only 23 years old coming off an shortened season due to a broken foot, but also his now iconic 63 points playoff performance in Boston Garden. While preparing to watch those same Celtics and the Houston Rockets square off in the Finals, he also stopped by David Letterman's then-NBC show for this hilarious and vintage interview.
MJ, in his finest '80s gear, donned a shiny suit which would even make a 1997 Puffy envious and showcased a still humble, yet engaging personality. Endorsements were not foreign during this era in sports, but even the normally witty Letterman was taken by surprise with Mike's laundry list at such a young age. Sneakerheads will shed tattoo tears of joy over the discussion of the first two Air Jordan prototypes and even raise eyebrows over Jordan's dislike of the first shoe.
The most intriguing part of the interview, however, was Jordan's revelation of wanting to retire at age 32 and join the PGA Tour. This means he would have retired in 1995 and it may have very well happened had that Pippen trade actually gone through. Thankfully, the story is now common knowledge: he retires in 1993 to play baseball--not golf--only to return in 1995 further cementing his legacy with an eventual second three-peat.

The undefeated Appalachia Bulldogs (9-0) travel to Bullitt Park to take on the equally undefeated Powell Valley Vikings in an epic Lonesome Pine District finale featuring a clash of titans.
Played in front of a massive crowd, many consider this game to be the greatest of all time in Southwest Virginia, and for good reason. The amount of talent on the field was unreal, including multiple NCAA Division 1 recruits. Among them were future NFL running back Julius Jones, Wake Forest tight end Josh Warren, and Virginia Tech/Eastern Kentucky quarterback Travis Turner.
Both Appalachia and Powell Valley would unsurprisingly go on to win the Group A, Division 1 and Division 2 state titles, marking the third time the two perennial powerhouses brought home "twin titles." Both schools also won twin titles in 1989 and 1994.
Also worth noting: In 1997 the Gate City Blue Devils won the Group AA, Division 3 state championship and finished the season at 12-2, their only two losses coming at the hands of--you guessed it!--Appalachia and Powell Valley. Needless to say, 1997 was a phenomenal year for football in Southwest Virginia and it hasn't been the same since then.
Appalachia and Powell Valley combined in 2011 to form the Union High School Bears. The Bears are coached by none other than Travis Turner, son of legendary Appalachia coach Tom Turner and Appalachia's starting quarterback from 1994 to 1997.

Brett Lorenzo Favre (/ˈfɑrv/; born October 10, 1969) is a former American football quarterback who spent the majority of his career with the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). He was a 20-year veteran of the NFL, having played quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons (1991), Green Bay Packers (1992–2007), New York Jets (2008), and Minnesota Vikings (2009–2010). Favre was the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 70,000 yards, over 6,000 completions, and over 10,000 pass attempts.[2][3][4]
Favre started at the quarterback position for the University of Southern Mississippi for four years before being selected in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft by Atlanta (33rd overall). He was traded to Green Bay on February 10, 1992, for the 19th pick in the 1992 NFL Draft.
Favre became the Packers' starting quarterback in the fourth game of the 1992 season, stepping in for injured quarterback Don Majkowski, and started every game through the 2007 season.[5] He was traded to the New York Jets and started at quarterback for the 2008 season before signing with the Vikings on August 18, 2009 as their starting quarterback.[6] He made an NFL record 297 consecutive starts (321 including playoffs).
He is the only player to win the AP Most Valuable Player three consecutive times (1995–97),[7] and is one of only six quarterbacks to have won the award as well as the Super Bowl in the same season.[8][9][10] He has led teams to eight division championships (1995, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009), five NFC Championship Games (1995, 1996, 1997, 2007, 2009), and two Super Bowl appearances (Super Bowl XXXI, Super Bowl XXXII), winning one (Super Bowl XXXI).
He holds many NFL records, including most career pass completions, most career pass attempts, most career interceptions thrown, most consecutive starts by a player, most career victories as a starting quarterback, most sacked, and most fumbles.[11][12]
