VICE News filmmaker Medyan Dairieh gains exclusive access to the Syrian branch of al Qaeda, al Nusra, a jihadist group fighting against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and the Islamic State (IS).
Spending more than a month with al Nusra and exploring their expanding territory, Dairieh meets the highest-ranking members of the organization, who reveal their identity on screen for the first time and discuss their military doctrine.
Al Nusra, which swore allegiance to al Qaeda two years ago and is now emerging as a powerful force to rival IS in Syria, has seized several strategic towns in the northwestern province of Idlib. While it supplies water, electricity, and food to the local population, a school run by al Nusra is also grooming young boys to become the next generation of al Qaeda and preparing them for jihad.
VICE News also secures exclusive access to the frontlines of the battle for Abu Al-Duhur airport in Idlib, a major airbase held by Assad’s forces, besieged by al Nusra for two years. Aided by dust storms during the attack, the airport was the last remaining government stronghold in the region. Dozens of government soldiers were subsequently executed, according to the monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

MUKALLA, YEMEN — Al Qaeda released a video showing the execution of two alleged spies who were accused of providing information to the U.S. military.
Spectators looked on as the bodies of two Saudi men, accused of being spies, hung from a bridge in Mukalla, Yemen on Wednesday.
The men, identified as al-Mutairi and al-Khaledi were accused of providing information to the U.S. military regarding the location of several al Qaeda leaders who were killed in U.S. led drone strikes in recent months.
One of those killed in a recent drone strike was Nasser al-Wuhayshi, a former aid to Osama Bin Laden and deputy leader of al Qaeda’s global operation.
The suspected spies were shot in front of a group of people and were later hung from the bridge. The banner above them reads, "the House of Saud directs American planes to bomb the holy warriors."

In the aftermath of 9/11 and the US-led invasion of Afghanistan much of al-Qaeda's infrastructure including its training camps were destroyed. Peter Taylor's three part series examines the new al-Qaeda which has emerged and the threat it poses to the West. The first part, jihad.com explores how the internet has become the lifeblood of the new al-Qaeda.
The internet has been key in pulling together the shattered remains of the organisation that operated before the invasion of Afghanistan, according to the general running the Iraq war, Lt Gen John Abizaid.
He says: "The only safe haven that remains for al-Qaeda is the virtual realm. It is one that we all should be worried about."
Mike Sheuer, former head of the CIA Bin Laden unit, agrees: "The current state of al-Qaeda and the health of al-Qaeda is largely due to its ability to manipulate the internet."
Following a year-long investigation, and just over two weeks after the London bomb attacks, BBC reporter and terrorism expert Peter Taylor peers into the murky world of the internet jihadi.
He discovers how bloodthirsty videos are made in Iraq and circulated by webmasters in the UK and elsewhere, in an underground broadcasting network.
He finds the web has become a secret and safe means of communication, as well as an inexhaustible online library of training manuals and information on how to carry out terrorist attacks.
Combined, these elements make the net the most significant weapon in al-Qaeda's new fractured and decentralised state.
This one-hour documentary traces the link between videos from Iraq shown on websites, including beheadings and car bombs, and recruitment of international volunteers joining the insurgents.
It challenges the webmaster Mohammed Al-Massari, who runs a website from his home in London and sees nothing wrong with such images being shown on his site.
The programme also explores the story of Babar Ahmad whom US prosecutors accuse of having pioneered al-Qaeda's activities on the internet in the late 1990s from his office at Imperial College in London.
It hears from his associates, among them one whom MI5 repeatedly tried to recruit, and reveals major new information about Ahmad from Pakistani intelligence.
Through unique access to the interrogation of a Pakistani webmaster described as al-Qaeda's leading IT expert, the programme can also reveal the part the web has played in major terror incidents.
And it looks at how British and US security agencies are now using the net to penetrate terrorist operations.
While fears are raised by some that civil liberties are being eroded, one female local magistrate, who uses the anonymity of the net to pass herself off as a radical, has been responsible for the conviction of a Islamic radical.

JAMLEH, SYRIA — Efforts by the Islamic State to gain a foothold in southern Syria appear to have been dealt a blow after an ISIS commander was killed in a suicide bombing by Al Qaeda's Al Nusra Front affiliate.
On Nov. 15 a top-level meeting of the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, an Al Qaeda militia operating in the Golan Heights, was rudely interrupted by an Al Nusra Front suicide attack. Up to 19 people were killed, including six of the brigade's top men. Among the dead was Muhammad "Abu Ali" al-Baridi, the head of the group who went by nickname "The Uncle."
"The Islamic State, that controls the closest area to the Israel border in the Syrian Golan Heights, suffered a severe blow and lost its entire top command in the area in one fell swoop," wrote Alex Fishman, a veteran military correspondent for Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot, in an article cited by Fox News.
Al Nusra Front quickly took to credit and bragged over Twitter about the "heroic" attack.

VICE NEWS exclusive footage and interviews with British nationals fighting with al Qaeda in Syria.
Yesterday, MI5 Director-General Andrew Parker announced that hundreds of British Muslims have travelled to Syria to take part in "terrorist tourism". Today, we present exclusive video footage and interviews with British nationals fighting with al Qaeda in Syria. In the film, two young men with British accents echo the sentiments expressed by Lee Rigby's killer Michael Adebolajo and declare jihad against the UK and United States.
"I say to the United States that your time will come," says one of the men, who gives his age as 26, "and we will bleed you to death and, Inshallah, shall raise a flag in the White House."
The second jihadist calls on the British public to rise up against the government: "Like the guy in Woolwich, he explained that David Cameron would never walk on the street, and he'll never get shot in the face, whereas you guys who are soldiers, or just normal folk, will take the blame for the crimes that are committed worldwide, by Britain itself, so we have to fight."
The film also shines a light on the communication difficulties that arise when radicalised extremists from Britain, France, Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo and Turkey, among other countries, get together to fight on the front line.

THIS IS THE OFFICIAL 911 STORY ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA:
The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th, or 9/11)[nb 1] were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda on the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The attacks consisted of suicide attacks used to target symbolic U.S. landmarks.
Four passenger airliners—which all departed from airports on the U.S. East Coast bound for California—were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists to be flown into buildings. Two of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. Within an hour and 42 minutes, both 110-story towers collapsed, with debris and the resulting fires causing partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the World Trade Center complex, including the 47-story 7 World Trade Center tower, as well as significant damage to ten other large surrounding structures. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense) in Arlington County, Virginia, leading to a partial collapse in the Pentagon's western side. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, initially was steered toward Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. In total, the attacks claimed the lives of 2,996 people (including the 19 hijackers) and caused at least $10 billion in property and infrastructure damage[2][3] and $3 trillion in total costs.[4] It was the deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers[5] in the history of the United States, with 343 and 72 killed respectively.
Suspicion for the attack quickly fell on al-Qaeda. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror and invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, which had harbored al-Qaeda. Many countries strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded the powers of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to prevent terrorist attacks. Although al-Qaeda's leader, Osama bin Laden, initially denied any involvement, in 2004 he claimed responsibility for the attacks.[1] Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited U.S. support of Israel, the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives. Having evaded capture for almost a decade, bin Laden was located and killed by members of the U.S. military in May 2011.
The destruction of the World Trade Center and nearby infrastructure caused serious damage to the economy of Lower Manhattan and had a significant effect on global markets, closing Wall Street until September 17 and the civilian airspace in the U.S. and Canada until September 13. Many closings, evacuations, and cancellations followed, out of respect or fear of further attacks. Cleanup of the World Trade Center site was completed in May 2002, and the Pentagon was repaired within a year. On November 18, 2006, construction of One World Trade Center began at the World Trade Center site. The building was officially opened on November 3, 2014.[6][7] Numerous memorials have been constructed, including the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington County, Virginia, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

ISIS is the successor to Tanzim Qaidat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn (more commonly known as al-Qaeda in Iraq), formed by Abu Musab Al Zarqawi in 2004, which took part in the Iraqi insurgency against the American-led forces and their Iraqi allies following the 2003 invasion of Iraq.[59][73] During the 2003–2011 Iraq War it combined with other Sunni insurgent groups into the Mujahideen Shura Council and consolidated further into the Islamic State of Iraq.[74][73] At it's height it enjoyed a significant presence in the Iraqi governorates of Al Anbar, Nineveh, Kirkuk, most of Salah ad Din, parts of Babil, Diyala and Baghdad, and claimed Baqubah as a capital city.[75][76][77][78] However the ISI’s violent attempts to govern its territory led to a backlash by Sunni Iraqis and other insurgent groups, which helped propel the Awakening movement and a decline in the group.[79][73]
Under its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, ISIS has grown significantly, gaining support in Iraq due to alleged economic and political discrimination against Arab Iraqi Sunnis, and establishing a large presence in the Syrian governorates of Ar-Raqqah, Idlib and Aleppo after entering the Syrian Civil War.[80][81]
ISIS had close links to Al-Qaeda until February 2014, when, after an eight-month power struggle, Al-Qaeda cut all ties with the group, reportedly for its brutality and "notorious intractability."[82][83][84]
In June 2014, ISIS had at least 4.000 fighters in its ranks in Iraq[85] who, in addition to attacks on government and military targets, have claimed responsibility for attacks that have killed thousands of civilians.[86] In August 2014, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that the group had increased its strength to 50,000 fighters in Syria and 30,000 in Iraq.[17]
ISIS compels people in the areas it controls, under the penalty of death, torture or mutilation, to declare Islamic creed, and live according to its interpretation of Sunni Islam and sharia law.[87][70] It directs violence against Shia Muslims, indigenous Assyrian, Chaldean, Syriac and Armenian Christians, Yazidis, Druze, Shabaks and Mandeans in particular.[88]
ISIS’s original aim was to establish a caliphate in the Sunni-majority regions of Iraq. Following its involvement in the Syrian Civil War, this expanded to include controlling Sunni-majority areas of Syria.[89] A caliphate was proclaimed on 29 June 2014, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi—now known as Amir al-Mu'minin Caliph Ibrahim—was named as its caliph, and the group was renamed the Islamic State.[5][6][7]

The Islamic State (IS)[5][7][56] (Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية ad-Dawlah l-ʾIslāmiyyah), formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL /ˈaɪsɪl/) or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS /ˈaɪsɪs/),[a] is a Sunni jihadist group in the Middle East. In its self-proclaimed status as a caliphate, it claims religious authority over Muslims all across the world[57] and aspires to bring much of the Muslim-inhabited regions of the world under its direct political control,[58] beginning with territory in the Levant region, which includes Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and an area in southern Turkey that includes Hatay.[59][60] It has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States,[61] the United Kingdom,[62] Australia,[63] Canada,[64] Indonesia[65] and Saudi Arabia,[66] and has been labeled by the United Nations [67] and Western and Middle Eastern media as a terrorist organization.[68][69][70][71][72]

February 04, 2016 - Yemeni tribal sources say two US drone strikes have killed twelve people in the eastern and southern parts of the country.
One airstrike targeted a vehicle travelling in al Rawdah city in Shabwah province, killing six people. The other air attack hit six more people in Abyan province. The victims are said to be al-Qaeda operatives. They include Jalal Baleedi, a field commander who is suspected of leading the al Qaeda operations. The terrorist group has taken advantage of the ongoing conflict pitting Ansarullah fighters backed by allied army units against forces loyal to fugitive former President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
Earlier we were joined by activist and political commentator Hussain al-Bukhaiti from Sana'a who told us if these strikes do help destroy the al-Qaeda in the war-torn country.

Terror at the Mall Greeny Generations MoVieS (2014) On September 21st, 2013 a group of four to five young men aged between eighteen to twenty three from a radical Somali outfit related to Al Qaeda known as Al Shabaab, stormed an upmarket mall in Kenya's capital of Nairobi and went on a killing spree that left an estimated 71 people of different nationalities dead in its wake. The first responders included an armed businessman named Abdul Haji and several other plain-clothed cops who made the ultimate call not to wait for reinforcements but instead stormed into the Westgate mall with the aim of saving lives. We follow the heart-wrenching stories of the lucky survivors of this terrorist attack as they narrate the accounts of that Saturday afternoon. Some of them include women and children who lived to tell their stories. HBO also gives us the accounts of the first responders as we observe their performance thanks to the CCTV surveillance systems which the terror gang left intact.

Civilians caught in the crossfire of battle for Yemen's Taiz

Dozens of civilians in Yemen have been killed in fighting in the besieged city of Taiz between Houthi rebels and forces loyal to the government. And in the east, US drone strikes have reportedly left 12 people dead, including one of al-Qaeda's most senior commanders.
Taiz, Yemen's third largest city, has been besieged by Houthi fighters for months. Hospitals here are fast running out of medical supplies. The relentless fighting has killed hundreds of civilians and created a dire humanitarian situation.
As in many other parts Yemen, basic services have been suspended in Taiz. People fear outbreaks of disease due to the unsanitary conditions and fumes from explosives being used by all sides.
Pro-government fighters were not able to close in from Taiz province after they faced stiff resistance there. They are trying to push towards the capital Sanaa from Jawf, Marib and Nehem. Yemen's army and pro-government fighters say they have taken control of an important crossing linking Sanaa to Marib and Jawf.
Fighters say taking over Nehem mountains will cut off supplies to Houthi fighters and Republican guard forces loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh, the former president.
But in the fight to take over a military camp and a weapons depot, more than 60 soldiers and fighters have been killed on both sides. Houthi fighters have the support of some tribes in Sanaa province and that has slowed the Yemeni military's progress in taking back territory there.
The lack of security is helping armed groups like al-Qaeda - which has claimed control of several areas in recent weeks - in the south. It is being targeted by US drone strikes and, in one such strike on Thursday, a local commander was reportedly killed.
Jalal Mohsen Saeed Baleedi al-Marqashi, also known as Hamza al-Zinjibari, was the field commander of many provinces in Yemen for al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. His death, if confirmed, is seen as a blow for al-Qaeda.
Yemen is being torn apart by conflict for the last two years. For millions of Yemenis struggling to survive, military gains by any side do not mean much.

CIA Al Qaeda Interrogation: The Pentagon has released a video showing the interrogation of Osama bin Laden's driver, a Yemeni named Salem Hamdan. The video, recorded shortly after his capture in Afghanistan 2001, shows Hamdan in a sparse room, kneeling on what appears to be a dirt floor, handcuffed with a hood over his head. An American soldier armed with an automatic weapon removes the hood and an interrogator off camera begins to question Hamdan in Arabic. The video include chyrons with an English translation of the exchanges.
The interrogator asks Hamdan about weapons found in his car and support for Al Qaeda. Hamdan strenuously denies knowing anything about the weapons or Al Qaeda operations. The interrogation is measured, not overly aggressive, and there are no physical signs that Hamdan had been abused or tortured. Hamdan appears at ease, almost relaxed. He's given permission to readjust his sitting position to be more comfortable, and at one point starts interrogating the interrogator. Hamdan was convicted of providing material support to Al Qaeda in 2008, while a charge of conspiring with Al Qaeda was dropped. He was sentenced to 5 ½ years and released shortly thereafter because he had already spent 6 years in custody at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base detention camp in Cuba.

A former religious advisor to Osama bin Laden, Abu Hafs al-Mauritani has joined a chorus of Muslims in condemning the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, denouncing its recent attacks in Paris as going against the tenets of Islam.
In his first interview to an English-TV audience, Mauritani tells Al Jazeera's Sami Zeidan that ISIL has "misunderstood" Islam, just as people in the West might "misunderstand Christianity".
"Islam forbids the killing of innocent people, regardless of whether they are Muslims or non Muslims," he says. "Killing civilians and innocent people ... is unacceptable and has nothing to do with jihad."
A former al-Qaeda ideologue who served on the group's Shura Council, Mauritani left al-Qaeda in August 2001 after disagreeing with bin Laden's decision to target civilians.
After the September 11 attacks, he fled to Iran where he spent 10 years in prison before being extradited to Mauritania.
Speaking from the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott, he accuses ISIL's recruitment methods, citing political and not religious grievances for the group's rise.
He blames the West's support for Israel, "corrupt Arab regimes" and "counter revolutions after the Arab Spring" for the spread of the armed group.
"Why else would they have hit France and not hit the Vatican?" he says. "The Vatican represents western Christianity, why didn’t they attack a church?"
France has been bombing ISIL targets in Syria since late September, and since the Paris attacks has carried out a wave of air strikes on the Syrian city of Raqqa, the de-facto capital of the "Islamic State".
Mauritani, who rejects Baghdadi's claim to be the leader of all Muslims, says ISIL fails to meet the conditions and requirements of a caliphate and is a "fruit" of the US-led occuptaion of Iraq.
Mauritani also talks to Al Jazeera about why he joined - and left - al-Qaeda and what drives people to join the ranks of ISIL and other armed groups.
