Bling (or bling-bling) is a slang term popularized in hip hop culture, referring to flashy, ostentatious or elaborate jewelry and ornamented accessories that are carried, worn or installed, such as cell phones or tooth caps.
In linguistics terms, bling is an ideophone intended to evoke the "sound" of light hitting silver, platinum, or diamonds. It is not an onomatopoeia, because the act of jewelry shining does not make a sound. The form bling-bling is a case of reduplication.
It is widely believed that Rapper Lil Wayne invented the word Bling-bling one night in the studio. However, this particular ideophone was already in use in different forms, as the word [ping] some 35 years earlier, in rap songs such as Slick Rick's 1988 single "Mona Lisa." During the mid- to late 1960s, toothpaste maker Ultra Brite ran a series of commercials stating, "Ultrabrite gives your mouth...[ping]...sex appeal!" Before the words "sex appeal", a bell sound was heard as a young man or woman smiled. Comedians such as Martin Lawrence parodied the "Ultrabrite smile" by vocalizing the sound effect as both "bling-bling," and "bling-blauw."

Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. (born September 27, 1982), better known by his stage name Lil Wayne, is an American rapper. At the age of nine, Lil Wayne joined Cash Money Records as the youngest member of the label, and half of the duo, The B.G.'z, with B.G.. In 1997, Lil Wayne joined the group Hot Boys, which also included rappers Juvenile, B.G., and Young Turk. Hot Boys debuted with Get It How U Live! that year. Lil Wayne gained most of his success with the group's major selling album Guerrilla Warfare, released in 1999. Also in 1999, Lil Wayne released his Platinum debut album Tha Block Is Hot, selling over one million copies in the U.S.
Although his next two albums Lights Out (2000) and 500 Degreez (2002) were not as successful (only reaching Gold status), Lil Wayne reached higher popularity in 2004 with Tha Carter, which included the single "Go D.J." Wayne also appeared on the Destiny's Child top ten single "Soldier" that year. In 2005, the sequel to Tha Carter, Tha Carter II, was released. In 2006 and 2007, Lil Wayne released several mixtapes and appeared on several popular rap and R&B singles. His most successful album, Tha Carter III, was released in 2008 and sold over 1 million copies in the U.S. its first week of release. It included the number-one single "Lollipop" featuring Static Major. It also includes the singles "A Milli" and "Got Money" featuring T-Pain and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

L'été, c'est la saison pour se montrer, se faire remarquer. Sur le sable, dans les soirées ou dans les boutiques, pour certains, c'est le moment ou jamais d'exister dans le regard des autres. Il faut être beau, original, drôle et sexy. Et évidemment, pour bien taper dans l'œil de tout le monde, il faut dépenser de l'argent, beaucoup d'argent, sortir facilement billets et carte bleue, débourser sans compter. Voitures de luxe, montres de marque, champagne millésimé… l'argent doit se voir.
Alors, il y a bien sûr les fils de riches qui dépensent des milliers d'euros dans les boîtes de nuit sur la Côte d'Azur, s'exhibent en yachts de luxe et n'ont aucune notion de l'argent dépensé. Dérive de notre époque, les preuves de leur frime doivent désormais s'afficher sur les réseaux sociaux. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram… Sur Internet, tout le monde peut se mettre en scène et devenir le héros de sa propre histoire. C'est le règne des selfies, ces autoportraits postés sur les réseaux sociaux.
Des images pour dire : « Regardez comme ma vie est belle, comme je m'amuse ! Regardez comme je suis riche ! », avec, évidemment, ses dérives et son lot de désillusion.
Il y a aussi d'autres jeunes, venus de milieux moins favorisés ceux-là, qui travaillent en saisonniers et qui dépensent l'intégralité de leur salaire en quelques heures. Eux aussi, cherchent à attirer l'attention en voitures décapotables de location et en jouant aux flambeurs sur les plages et dans les clubs… Avant de retomber dans la difficile réalité du quotidien.
De Paris à Cannes, en passant par Saint-Tropez et jusqu'à Dubaï, Zone Interdite a filmé les cousins Lorenzo et Angelo, qui triment dur pour tout claquer en quelques heures, Kevin, le fils à papa, Joy, qui rêve d'être la nouvelle Céline Dion, et Vincent et Taylor, les professionnels du bling bling…
Des jeunes en quête de quelques instants de gloire ou de fortune à dépenser dans l'instant et sans limite. Ils ont un été pour tout flamber.
