Remand (detention)
The remand or detention of a suspect is the process of keeping a person who has been arrested in custody, normally in a remand prison, prior to a trial, conviction or sentencing. The word "remand" is used generally in common law jurisdictions to describe pre-trial detention; other legal systems use varying terms and phrases. Pre-trial detention differs fundamentally from post-adjudicatory detention, or imprisonment.
In many western-style democracies imprisonment without trial is considered to be in contradiction to the idea that a suspect is innocent until proven guilty, and for this reason pre-trial detention is usually subject to safeguards and restrictions as to its permissible duration.
Where the courts cannot be persuaded that a suspect should be remanded in custody ahead of trial - for instance in the interests of "public safety" - a suspect will be released on bail until trial (or, in some cases, sentencing).
Detention before charge
The pre-charge detention period is the period of time during which an individual can be held and questioned by police, prior to being charged with an offence. Not all countries have such a concept, and in those that do, the period for which a person may be detained without charge varies by jurisdiction.

An American soldier armed with an automatic weapon removes the hood and an interrogator off camera begins to question Hamdan in Arabic. The video include chyrons with an English translation of the exchanges.
The interrogator asks Hamdan about weapons found in his car and support for al-Qaida. Hamdan strenuously denies knowing anything about the weapons or al-Qaida operations. The interrogation is measured, not overly aggressive, and there are no physical signs that Hamdan had been abused or tortured. Hamdan appears at ease, almost relaxed. He's given permission to readjust his sitting position to be more comfortable, and at one point starts interrogating the interrogator. Hamdan was convicted of providing material support to al-Qaida in 2008, while a charge of conspiring with al-Qaida was dropped. He was sentenced to 5 ½ years and released shortly thereafter because he had already spent 6 years in custody at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base detention camp in Cuba.

The Pentagon has released a 10-year-old video showing the interrogation of Osama bin Laden's driver, a Yemeni named Salem Hamdan. The video, recorded shortly after his capture in Afghanistan 2001, shows Hamdan in a sparse room, kneeling on what appears to be a dirt floor, handcuffed with a hood over his head. An American soldier armed with an automatic weapon removes the hood and an interrogator off camera begins to question Hamdan in Arabic. The video include chyrons with an English translation of the exchanges.
The interrogator asks Hamdan about weapons found in his car and support for al-Qaida. Hamdan strenuously denies knowing anything about the weapons or al-Qaida operations. The interrogation is measured, not overly aggressive, and there are no physical signs that Hamdan had been abused or tortured. Hamdan appears at ease, almost relaxed. He's given permission to readjust his sitting position to be more comfortable, and at one point starts interrogating the interrogator. Hamdan was convicted of providing material support to al-Qaida in 2008, while a charge of conspiring with al-Qaida was dropped. He was sentenced to 5 ½ years and released shortly thereafter because he had already spent 6 years in custody at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base detention camp in Cuba.

A prison, correctional facility, detention center[a] (US English), jail[b] (US and Australia), gaol (dated) (British English), penitentiary (sometime used in American English) or remand centre[c][d] is a facility in which inmates are forcibly confined and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state. Prisons are most commonly used within a criminal justice system: people charged with crimes may be imprisoned until they are brought to trial; those pleading or being found guilty of crimes at trial may be sentenced to a specified period of imprisonment. Besides their use for punishing crimes, jails and prisons are frequently used by authoritarian regimes against perceived opponents.
The term prison or penitentiary is often used to describe institutions that incarcerate people for longer periods of time, such as many years, while jail is often used to describe institutions focused on confining people for shorter periods of time (e.g. for shorter sentences or while waiting for trial / sentencing). Prisons often have facilities that are more designed with long term confinement in mind in comparison to jails.
Prisons can be used as a tool of political repression to punish what are deemed political crimes, often without trial or other legal due process; this use is illegal under most forms of international law governing fair administration of justice. In times of war, prisoners of war or detainees may be detained in military prisons or prisoner of war camps, and large groups of civilians might be imprisoned in internment camps.

Tuticorin. A remand prisoner lodged in the Srivaikundam sub-jail in Tuticorin district escaped from prison on Thursday. The incident came to light in the afternoon shortly after the prisoners had their lunch.
