The Messina Strait, the famous Greek theatre of Taormina, the archeological sites of Segesta and Selinunte, the marvellous Catania, the unique monastery and temple of Monreale, the picturesque Cefalu and Ragusa are all worth taking a look on the largest island of the Mediterranean Sea. The romantic Sicily, an island very rich in monuments and natural beauties, enchants every visitor. Let us take a walk on the streets of the capital, Palermo, let us refresh ourselves on the beach of Mondello, take a slide in the famous Citta del Mare, and go to the ever-foggy Erice using the cableway. We can enjoy the sicilian blood-oranges, drink a capuccino among the walls of Syracuse, and finally, take a walk to the still active Etna volcano.

In June the European Union (EU) responded to the huge numbers of migrants and refugees dying on its borders by launching an 11.8 million euro ($12.8m) a year naval mission. EUNAVFOR Med was launched to tackle human trafficking from North Africa, a major contributor to the migration crisis that has claimed 2,000 lives in the Mediterranean in 2015 alone.
But while the EU has declared war on traffickers in Libya and elsewhere, another trade is booming on its doorstep. Land smuggling preys on desperate people hoping to escape the EU’s Dublin Regulation — whereby migrants seeking refuge are required to do so in the first country that they set foot in — and illegally cross European borders.
VICE News travels to Sicily, a main stepping stone into Europe, to follow a police operation to arrest suspected smugglers at a boat landing, and meets a former member of a people trafficking network operating between Libya, Egypt, and Italy. We also find out about the land smuggling business of taking people from Sicily to northern Europe, and meet a small group of activists helping newly-arrived migrants and refugees avoid being exploited.

Sicily (Sicilia) is a rugged and attractive island on the southern tip of Italy, and is one of the country's 20 regions. It is separated from the mainland region of Calabria by the 5 km Straits of Messina. It can get very hot during the summer, so it is better to visit during spring and autumn, while it is still quite pleasant during winter.
Do in Sicily
========
Trekking in Sicily is going to expand. The Parks and the Nature Reserve are not very well organized but for this reason you'll have the opportunity to enjoy and discover the Sicilian Mountains and Nature. There are some wonderful trekkings that you can do to enjoy the beauty of the main Sicilian sites like Nebrodi mountains, Madonie mountains, Etna volcano, etc.
Visit the Salt Flats in Trapani where you will still see salt being made in the traditional way, by sweeping up the salt after the tide has gone out & then being ground down in ancient windmills.
Visit the popular seaside town of San Vito Lo Capo on the West Coast, famous for its sandy beach and where the low two story white Moorish architecture can be seen.
Visit Erice on the West Coast, the highest town in Sicily, with it's ancient stone walled city.
Visit Mazara Del Vallo on the South Coast for it's Tunisian Quarter.
Visit the Zingaro Reserve on the West Coast of Sicily for some of the best nature walks, natural beaches and examples of the dwarf palm that the area is famous for.
Visit the town of Noto on the South Coast, a Unesco World Heritage site due to the best examples of Baroque Architecture left in Europe today.
Visit the world's largest astronomical clock and the Museo Regionale in Messina .
Cities
=======
Agrigento — to the south and particularly noted for the Valle dei Templi (Valley of Temples)(UNESCO World Heritage)
Catania — busy university city and economic center, great for nightlife, the gate to Mount Etna (UNESCO World Heritage)
Gela — one of the most important old greek cities, archaelogical centre e sea resort on the south coast

Invasion of Sicily: Full WWII Battle of Sicily Documentary.
Take an INTENSE look at the Invasion of Sicily, otherwise known as Operation Husky. It was a major World War II campaign, in which the Allies took Sicily from the Axis Powers (Italy and Nazi Germany). It was a large scale amphibious and airborne operation, followed by six weeks of land combat. It launched the Italian Campaign.
Husky began on the night of 9–10 July 1943, and ended on 17 August. Strategically, Husky achieved the goals set out for it by Allied planners; the Allies drove Axis air, land and naval forces from the island and the Mediterranean's sea lanes were opened. As a result of the invasion, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was toppled from power in Italy. It opened the way for the Allied invasion of Italy. Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Taormina, the most picturesque city in Sicily because its houses were built

Visit Taormina in Sicily
Taormina is the most picturesque city in Sicily because its houses were built in a small area but with the 250-meter difference between the levels. Because it's been continually inhabited since it was set up, ancient Greek and Roman buildings medieval palaces, churches and modern hotels stand next to each other.
[Foreign Language] Castello de Taormina was built on the 400-meter Peak of Tauro Mountain. From here, we can see the whole city; the sea, the nearby Isola Bella Island and the cone of Etna. Its minister, dating back to the 13th century was irrelatively simple building but it's bare and palaces, Palazzo Courvaja and Palazzo Ducal de San Stefano are rather ornate. Even today, Sicily is judged mainly based on books and films. For example, based on Mario Pozo's novels the Sicilian or the trilogy, Godfather.
Sicily is thought to be world of the mafia and blood feud, the Vendetta. There's no doubt about the existence of the mafia but it sure that tourist won't be able to notice their actions. Public security isn't worst than anywhere else in Italy, thanks to the police.
If we're privileged to see a wedding in such an Old Italian town, it's inevitable to remember the film Matrimonio all'Italiana; of course it was different when Sofia Loren and Mastroianni walking along the narrow cobalt streets of Taormina, we can feel the taste of Italy the most. Small antique shops, the small work of local craftsmen, the Mediterranean style mixed with antique elements of the houses, the color and smell of the flowers are impressive.
The best known site of the town, the former Greek Taorminian is the Greek theater. The staggered seats of the huge semi-circle arc were carved into the rocks, so that behind the stage the most beautiful sites of nature will be the scenery. The famous Hungarian painter Czontvary was also impressed by the site. His masterpiece was contributed to increasing the fame of Taormina.
We have to work to get to know the town, up steps, down steps. Fortunately, we can reach the Greek theater by cable cars as well. The acoustics of the theater are also excellent. Every summer, concerts and performances take place here.
From Taormina, we can go for nice trips to the thermal baths of Ali Terme. The elegant beaches of Forza d'Agro or Mazaro and some romantic ruins of castles can also be found in the mountains nearby.

Catania.
The highest active volcano, Etna can be approached from Europa Catania the most easily. On the top of the 3, 269-meter mountain is an observatory which watches earthquakes, seaquakes, eruptions and lava killed 10,000 of people throughout the centuries especially in 1169, 1693, 1886, 1910, and 1929. The latest eruption was in 2002. Fortunately, nobody was killed but this still-active volcano can't be approached by cable car or jeep as was possible in the last centuries. The motorway is the continuation of Catania via Ethnia leading us higher and higher among fruit gardens, vineyards, and almond trees. Crosses designate the end of the lava of each eruption. The road leads to Casa Cantoniera at 1882 meters among pine trees and evergreens. From here, we could have gone on by cable car which isn't working at present.
In Europe, there are few active volcanoes and all five can be found in the area of the Mediterranean Sea. The volcano in Santorini in Greece has been inactive for a long time but hasn't stopped activity completely. The other four emits smoke in Italy. Stromboli and Volcano are near Etna alarming the people in the Li-Pari islands belonging to Sicily. Vesuvius which buried Pompey towers over Naples. It's interesting to watch the creative power and vitality of man and nature. On the solid lava and ash, more and more new fruit gardens and vineyards appear every year making us forget the catastrophes.

Palermo street food – Sicilian Food documentary [Palermo travel guide]
That was on our mind from the moment we stepped off the bus in Palermo. Rated as the 5th best city in the world for street food, we knew we were in our element. However one of us wasn’t completely “on board” with some of Palermo’s more traditional delicacies – organ meat doesn’t make much of an appearance at our dinner table back home. While Calli nervously hummed and hawed, I booked us a walking tour of Palermo’s street food scene with StrEAT Palermo Tours to understand another, tastier side of the city.
"You are a person like travelling, let's Subscribe this channel to learn about the beautiful places in the world. And if you intend to travel in somecountry or someplace and want to get more information of places, please comment in this video, we'll upload as soon as possible. Thank you ^^

Travel video about destination Sicily in Italy.
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is the most diverse region in Italy,a land of gods and natural forces and a place of ancient cultures. Throughout the history of Sicily there have been many battles, rulers, cultures and religions. Prior to Roman rule both the Greeks and the Carthagians fought against each other. Later came the Arabs and the Normans. Catania is Sicily’s second largest city and has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. Therefore only a few historical remnants have survived. However, after each disaster the city was rebuilt and the result is a Baroque city dominated by fascinating sights full of character and charm. A devastating earthquake in 1693 destroyed the original town of Noto and left it in ruins. Construction of the new town took almost a hundred years until at end of the eighteenth century most of its buildings had been rebuilt. In addition to the geometrical design of its streets the remarkable architectural harmony of the town has been created by much use of ochre-coloured sandstone. The privately-owned train, the Ferrovia Circumetnea, travels around Mount Etna from Catania to Riposto. A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. Taormina is situated on a rock high above the Ionic Sea. The Teatro Greco was built out of the stone of Monte Tauro in the third century A.D. and five hundred years later it was enlarged by the Romans for gladiatorial battle. The old town ended at Porta Messina whose medieval palaces and villas have been preserved right up until the present day. A few kilometres from Palermo and set within a beautiful bay is Mondello sheltered by the slopes of Monte Pellegrino that contains a grotto, an altar and a pilgrims church, the Santuario Di Santa Rosalia. Here this fascinating journey comes to an end. Sicily is exquisite, an ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and the most diverse region in Italy, a land of gods and natural forces and a place of ancient cultures.Catania, in the northeast of the island, is Sicily’s second largest city that has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. It is believed that Greek settlers from Chalkidi founded it and some centuries later, it was conquered by the Romans and later, the Arabs brought the city a new wave of prosperity.Noto is a charming town with around 20,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most beautiful enclosed Baroque towns in Sicily. However, many of Noto’s historic buildings have been neglected for many years and are in somewhat less than perfect condition. The Cathedrale Di San Nicolo also fell into disrepair as a result of continued neglect and this caused both its dome and part of its roof to collapse in 1996.A proud and mighty volcano rises above eastern Sicily. Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, is the undisputed ruler of this fascinating Mediterranean island. The snow on the summit region of Etna obscures the fact that deep within the volcano is an unimaginable natural furnace with a temperature of around 1,000 degrees Celsius.Marsala was given its name by the Arabs who called it ‘Marsal-Allah’, ‘God’s Harbor’. The monumental city gate is a reminder of the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldis on the 8th of March, 1860.In the mountain area close to Palermo, another wonderful city featured on our journey, is the picturesque town of Monreale, a townscape that for more than 800 years, has been dominated by a single building. Monreale Cathedral was built due to a struggle for power between the Bishop of Palermo and the Norman King, William.Sicily is exquisite. An ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Messina, the third largest city in Sicily. Its visitors can enjoy the huge
harbor and the San Francesco church which was named after Saint Francis of Assisi.
If we mention Messina everybody thinks of Messina Strait. This is the point where we can reach Sicily from Italy by ferry.
As the two and a half thousand-year old city was almost destroyed in the two catastrophes, one of which was the earthquake in 1908 and the other was World War II. They can't boast as many monuments as its neighbors. Its huge harbor itself is a stirring colorful sight. Its worth-visiting San Francesco church was named after Saint Francis of Assisi. In front of it is the life size statue of the saint opening his arms towards us can be seen.
Annunziata dei Catalani Church is the only Norman monument of Messina. In front of it, the statue of Don Juan de Austria who beat the Greek and the marine battle at Lepanto can be found.
The minister in Messina has kept nothing of its original form after being converted twice. The Montreal Soli most famous work "The Orion Well" made in 1547 was very beautiful. The four figures of this well signify the four big rivers -- the Tiberius, the Nile, the Ebro, and the Cameramus. The statues of the original work can be found at the Museo Nazinale in Nacina. The one that stands in the square is a certified copy. A trip up to the 60-meter bell free of the minister is worth it because of the view of the city and the harbor. The spectacular, astronomical clock is not as old as we would think. It was made in 1933. Its gold figures come to life every 15 minutes to designate the passing time with the—
The three old gates of the façade with some Gothic sculptures remained from the 15th and 16th centuries. The rest was destroyed by earthquakes and bombs. On the dials of the astronomical clock, we can observe the changes of the moon and the stars.
The three aisle interior with the carpeted frame roof is a result of renovations after World War 2. Only some tombs and the mosaics of the Apses are original; but, the painting and sculptures are also very beautiful.
The romantic atmosphere of Sicily has inspired several artists, sculptors, painters, and of course, poets. Up the hill, the—narrow road between two stone barriers, our northern eyes see an orange. Palm trees flowing on the stone walls, Tuscolanum, dell sound of a cricket. Cicero listen to it at night. White, cool wine at the cellars, Casanova drank this.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Ragusa in Sicily, which is built on a wide limestone hill between two deep
valleys, Cava San Leonardo and Cava Santa Domenica.
Visit Ragusa in Sicily
The southern coat of the Ireland is a les visited part of Sicily. Only Modica and Ragusa are worth mentioning. The latter is the departure point of trips towards the inner parts of the island. Leguse is the capital of the southeast and the county seat. Only the upper Ragusa built on the site of the Greek Hybla Heraea., and the medieval city built adjacent to it are interesting for tourists. Lower Ragusa is a center of asphalt and oil-mining. It's a modern industrial city with all its disadvantages.
The picturesque Baroque of the city has such monuments as a San Giorgio Church or the Santa Maria delle Scale Church dating back to the 15th century or the Pro Patria monument. In his famous work, "Italian Journey", Gouda writes about the antique monuments of Sicily with enthusiasm. Before and after him, many people have shared this order.
The diverse sides of the island are due to its mixed history. The native Siccans were conquered by Punic and Greek people. In 212 B.C., they were followed by the Romans who made the island their independent probincia. A thousand years later, Saracants, that is, Arabian people arrived. They were beat by the Norman -- a French origin. After the [Foreign Language] Dynasty died out, the German Howenstaus then the French Anju finally succeeded. The Famous folk rising called the Sicilian even song "Dispel the Anju". Then, with the help of the pope the Spanish Oregonion house gained power later following to the Hapsburgs hand. They were succeeded by the Savoy and Bourbon house until the island joined the Untied Italian Kingdom.
Siracusa is the most severely city on the Ionic Sea and was founded on 734 B.C. by the Greek Conrintha's on the island of Artesia. During its hay-day, it's a as big as it is today. Today, the island to the mainland is connected with a bridge. The place of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides used to be performed in the Greek theater. Today, we can adore the sunset from its semi-circle benches. Archimedes controlled the technical defenses of Siracusa besieged by the Romans with catapults and among other things, paraball and mirrors. The scholar was killed by a Roman soldier who didn't care about Archimedes famous saying "Don't disturb my circles". The scholar's tomb was alleged to be near Latomia Del Paradiso, a quarry. The huge castle-like quarry with its collapsed top became well-known when 7,000 prisoners of war were imprisoned here.
Dionysus Theranus heard the prisoners talking to each other in an echoing cave and the cave has been called Dionysus Ear ever since. All over the island the products of craftsmen are popular. In Siracusa, the custom-made products of ceramics are especially popular with tourists.
The ships going to Malta set-off from the harbor of the city. A small alley, Paseo Aretusa, leaves to the harbor from where bay sis beautiful especially at sunset. The main square is decorated by a spectacular Diana fountain dating back to 1906. The side of the old town lining the peninsula reminds us of Dubrovnik that the buildings seen here represent several centuries in several styles. Frederick II was responsible for the building of the fortress Castella Mariachi extending to the sea. The building of Palazo Bellomo dates back to the 13th century, the showpiece of its museum, and the painting Angelic Reading by Messina. St. John's catacombs remain from old Christian times from the yard of a monastery which fell into decay.
The minister was built on the side of the Minerva Church partly using its reminders. Its exterior pats were converted in Baroque style later on. Some columns of the huge three-aisle building belong to the Minerva Church. In the chapel, we can see the silver sculpture of Saint Lucia who scratched off her own eyes because one of the admirers complimented them. The beautiful altar pictures are also a work by Messina.
Siracus boast everything that the other cities of Sicily have. Siracusa can hold its own with any other city of Sicily. There's an excavation and archaeological museum -- the Apollo sanctuary and cathedral, the Greek theater and Roman anti-theater, Gothic fortress and medieval catacombs. But it has something that no other Sicilian cities have.
There's a legend about the spring of Arathusa. The nymph has turned into a spring here by Alphaes, the God of Rivers. Another curiosity that plays is that in Europe the papyrus of the Nile which was planted here by the Arabians can grow only here in the warm water of the pool.

Travel Guide Sicily http://bit.ly/124XYM9
Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Erice in Sicily, a historic town which had an important role in the antiquity.
Visit Erice in Sicily
Trapani, a town founded by the Punic, used to be the harbor of Eryx. The location of which is nice and is called Erice today. It had an important role in the antiquity. The pharaohs of the town built on top of the mountain at 750 meters, was an important point of orientation for shipment sailing around Sicily.
We can often watch the mountain tops attracting the clouds as if they use them as a blanket. In artichoke, we can watch this close-up. There's often fog and rain, and clouds covering the sky above the town. What can we do while it's raining? Let's sit in the famous confectionary, eat a cake with almonds and marzipan or a lemon pie. Sicilian cakes, especially the ones with almonds are well-known and delicious. We can drink a cup of good cappuccino, maybe the strongest and tastiest anywhere. Or let's read the "Sweet Life in Italy" by Frances Mayes who was in love with Italy. By the time we finish the chapter about Erice, it has stopped raining and the sun is shining again.
The Citadel Castelo Normano may have been built on the former site of the sanctuary partly from its stones. Actually, there are two medieval fortresses here; Castelo Populi and Castello Venera. Today, it's impossible to day where one of them ends and the other begins. In clear weather, there's a good view of the fortress and the parking lot in the distance. We can see the [Foreign Language] Grande and the [Foreign Language] Mountains towards the inside of the island on the coast to Sciacca and in the sea to the nearby Egadi Islands and Pantelleria further away.
Today, Erice is a frequent destination for excursions, reachable by car or cable car from Trapani. The town surrounded by walls is not very big; but, its alleys are so zigzagged that it's easy to get lost.
Erice considers Garibaldi to be its own hero visible by the memorial tablet placed on the wall of the town hall. Let's read how the hero of the war of independence is described by Fred Mustard Stewart in his novel. "All in all he had a pleasant face with his famous grizzled-red beard. Thousands of women dreamt about him all over the world reading the story of his famous love with Anita de Silva which was loved at first sight and she had fought in South America and Italy in his side before she died tragically soon".
The neighborhood is famous for its salt furnaces. Boat men and tuna fishermen, if it isn't fishing season take us gladly from the harbor of Trapani to the Egadi Islands. In one of Levanzo's caves, we can even see ancient drawings on the rocks. In his book, they found Adesea, Aaron the Bradford thought he had found Goat Island about which Romeros was writing on Favignana Island, one of these groups of islands. Archaeologist excavated a Venus sanctuary as well which was built in the 6th century B.C in honor of the Goddess of Fertility.

Its historical significance is clearly visible throughout the city’s magnificent old district that is dominated by Baroque architecture. The city has few monuments that pre date the Baroque Period but it was not wars or battles that were responsible for this but a volcano that towers high above the island and that is located thirty kilometres from Catania: Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano has destroyed this city more than once. On the Ionic Sea in the south east of Sicily is Syracusa that in ancient times was a legendary city state. Greek settlers from Corinth founded the city in 734 B.C. and it soon enjoyed much fame and prosperity. South of Agrigento is the ancient sanctuary of the Valle Dei Templi, the legendary Valley Of Temples. An enchanting area that is more of a plateau than a valley is a truly unique and magical place. Selinunte is one of the largest archaeological sites in Europe. The Selinunte Acropolis, formerly known as Megara Hyblae, was an important building complex and was built in the seventh century B.C. In the immediate surroundings of the Acropolis a small urban centre developed that in later years had a population that numbered tens of thousands.Beneath Monreale Mountain and located on the coast, is Palermo, the capital of Sicily. The city dates back to the eighth century B.C. However, nothing remains of the time when the Phoenicians founded the ancient town of Panormus, Palermo’s predecessor. The former summer residence of the Emir Of Palermo served as the palace of Norman king, Roger The Second. Up until the thirteenth century this luxurious Norman palace was a symbol of the wealth and power of the Normans. With its many fascinating ancient monuments, the remains of the CARTHAGINIANS, GREEKS and ROMANS, and with the glorious heritage of the Middle Ages and the charming influences of both the ARABS and the NORMANS, SICILY is justifiably known as, ‘A Treasure Trove Of History’.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Selinunte, an ancient Greek archaeological site in Sicily.
Visit Selinunte in Sicily
Selinunte, the ancient town of Selinus, anti-prods of Segesta, didn't survive the centuries any better than its rival. The immensity of the ruins is suggested by the fact that visitors can hire or bike with engine at the entrance. The town was destroyed in 409 B.C. by the Catagin and hasn't been restored since, so it's quite difficult to make heads or tails of the ruins.
Selinus was founded in 650 by the Greek. It was the westerly most Greek colony of Sicily. A part of it had been populated by the people of Siracusa but the first Punic War destroyed it and what remained was decimated by earthquakes. A part of its stones were used to rebuild other structures. Since the 18th century, archaeologists have researched the history of the town; but, they don't know even today which gods were to be honored by the construction of its eight churches. Working patiently, they tried to reassemble the tumbled stones like a puzzle. The majority of this work has been done on a computerized model. In practice only one church has been restored. It may have been Hera's Church the biggest church; 54 by 113 meters may have been built for Apollo. It's only still standing column over 16 meters high. Some columns and the remainders of Acropolis are still standing but the others lie in quite large disarray.
Above the small Marinella fishing village, there's a medieval tower called Tora da Polaze. There's a good view from here over the ruins and the sea. Via the main road of the town of 400 meters, we can reach remainders of gate fortresses similar to the ones in Siracusa. It's advisable to visit Selinunte in spring or autumn because of its lack of shade. The heat is lessened by the wind blowing from the sea. The name Selinunte means high in celery; but, along the roads, only dill and crest grow wild. Those interested can look at the excavations not only in Segesta and Selinunte, but the ruined field Iraq Minoan nearby and the Zona Arqueológica de Agrigento which hides the valley of the churches.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Segesta, which was the political center of the Elymian people, located in the
northwestern part of Sicily.
In Sicily we may find more Greek towns, churches, sanctuaries, and theaters remaining intact than in Greece. So, guess there's a Greek town of the natives. It fought several bloody wars with its enemy Salanutta. Despite the successive wars, Roman and Arabian ravage, two significant buildings survived.
The Grecian style theater was built in the roman era; but, because it is never been converted, it has kept its Grecian style. Its designers composed it in a landscape like scenery behind the stage. If we sit down in benches in semi-circular rows, a grand view opens in front t of us - the neighboring mountains and Cousteau Marave. Italian television likes to broadcast classical music concerts from here. The simplicity of the church similar to the Acropolis in Athens as well as its monumentality is impressive. Its tympanum is held by thick brown columns of Doric style in good condition. It's assumed by archaeologist that its building construction was never finished, maybe because of the Punic invasion.

Although Sicily has belonged to Italy for one and a half centuries now, it represents a distinct world. The Italians call it "Isola del sole", the island of the sun.
Spring comes earlier here than on the continent. Though the peak of Athen is covered by snow, braver people are already swimming in the sea when fragrant almond, lemon, and blood orange trees are just opening their blossoms.
The island which is over 25,000 square kilometers is surrounded by the Tierra on the north, Ian on the east and the Mediterranean Sea on the southern west. The 3300 height Etna which is one of the few active volcanoes in Europe rises on the northeast corner of the triangular shaped island.

Despite being relatively small, Malta, an island that lies in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and Africa, offers the travelers lots of natural beauties and historical monuments. There are some megalithic temples, which resemble Stonehenge, a mighty fortress system, romantic cities, and breathtaking baroque and renaissance palaces. Most of Malta’s settlements were built by the knights of St. John of Jerusalem that is why the cities resemble each other so much. Among the natural beauties stand out the Blue Grotto Cave of Malta, and the Azure Window of Gozo. The docks are full with colorful boats. Travel video about destination Siracusa in Italy.
The sea has always been of great importance to the city of Siracusa. Greek colonialists first arrived here by boat and settled in Sicily and thus laid the foundations of the region’s future prosperity. The attractive historic centre of the old town is located on the island of Ortygia whose buildings contain almost two thousand seven hundred years of history. When under the dictatorship of the tyrant, Dionysios The First, the town had a population of half a million that even surpassed that of Athens. Following a two year siege in 212 B.C. the Romans succeeded in conquering the metropolis. The Teatro Greco is one of the most beautiful amphitheatres of Ancient Greece and at the beginning of the fifth century dramas and comedies were frequently performed there. It once accommodated up to fifteen thousand spectators. Numerous colourful legends abound of the nearby Ear of Dionysios. The grotto is a wonder of acoustics in which even the most gentle whisper can be heard. Legend has it that the tyrant Dionysios used the phenomenon to eavesdrop on his prisoners. Siracusa is a fascinating and atmospheric place, steeped in history, myth and legend.

Sicily (Italian: Sicilia) is a rugged and attractive island on the southern tip of Italy, and is one of the country's 20 regions. It is separated from the mainland region of Calabria by the 5 km Straits of Messina. It can get very hot during the summer, so it is better to visit during spring and autumn, while it is still quite pleasant during winter.
Do in Sicily
=========
Trekking in Sicily is going to expand. The Parks and the Nature Reserve are not very well organized but for this reason you'll have the opportunity to enjoy and discover the Sicilian Mountains and Nature. Travel video about destination Ferrovia Circumetnea Sicilia in Italy.
Catania is the end of the line for a small railroad that encircles Mount Etna, the Ferrovia Circumetnea. In the heart of Catania various remnants that date back to Roman times indicate the glorious past of the second largest city in Sicily although its origins are far older. The journey around Mount Etna begins in the small and unspectacular station of the privately owned Ferrovia Circumetnea narrow gauge railway. The railroad once travelled to Catania’s harbour and today the line ends in the middle of the city. However, the simplicity of this railroad belies the fact that a journey along it is an absolute must! A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. The history of the railroad around Mount Etna began at the end of the nineteenth century when it was important that Sicily’s remote cities had ready access to the seaport of Catania.. The journey on the Ferrovia Circumetnea travels through some exceptionally beautiful scenery that contains a number of picturesque farms. The land owes its fertility to Mount Etna as, despite its destructive force, the fertile volcanic ground is ideal for agriculture. Large quantities of carbon dioxide are constantly emitted from Etna’s crater. However, the crater’s white smoke is normally quite harmless. Even though the volcano is active throughout the year eruptions are still relatively rare and the last large eruption was in 2002. Just like a good wine a ride on the Ferrovia Circumetnea improves with age. This must be the most atmospheric way in which to discover the remarkable Mount Etna!
