The Cannibals' War (1996): As the trial of former Liberian dictator Charles Taylor begins, we bring back an exclusive report exposing the atrocities committed by Taylor's men. Filmed in the middle of the civil war, it includes footage of Taylor's supporters preparing to eat a human heart and a rare interview with Taylor.
For downloads and more information visit http://journeyman.tv/9809/short-films/the-cannibals-war.html
Our film opens with gigantic US military helicopters hovering over Monrovia. The crackle of Kalashnikovs, 'Liberian music', echoes around the empty streets. This is a city with no laws of humanity as we know them. We discover a band of teenage NPFL fighters at a roadblock. Dead bodies lie at their feet, their chests sliced open from top to bottom, in the style of an African voodoo sacrifice. A boy brandishes a bucket, from which he proudly pulls a human heart. 'If I find my enemy I eat him', he boasts. 'But I only eat military men, not civilians. I am a human being after all.' Some fighters believe that by eating an enemy you get his power. Charles Taylor sums up: 'We have heard of outright cannibalism but this is an issue of war. There is no civilised war. Death is death.' For now the peace is holding. The UN are disarming troops on the streets. The market in Monrovia is full of people once again. But many think that Liberia's young cannibals have gone too far: a doctor prophesies disaster when they become the future leaders.

http://thisismylife.co.uk - In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a decade of fighting and hardship has left more than 5 million people dead. But for countless women and girls, a particular horror stalks them: rape and its legacy of shame. In Congo, sexual violence has become a weapon of war. Tens of thousands of women have been attacked and raped—in their fields, in their homes, in front of their families. Oxfams striking short film, shot in eastern Congo in 2008, elevates the stories of women working to overcome brutality and asks viewers to take action by joining a growing community of people who will not stand by any longer. Many injured at domestic soccer match between AS Vita and Daring Motema in Kinshasa in Democratic Republic of the Congo on Saturday (October 11).
The Kinshasa Derby in the Democratic Republic of Congo is notorious for its fierce rivalry.
And the match between Vita Club and Daring Club Motema Pembe came to a miserable end as the crowd broke out into violence.
With DCMP a goal ahead, tensions erupted in the stadium with both sets of fans interrupting play and storming onto the pitch.
According to early reports, 45 were injured during the riot, with fortunately no fatalities.
The Kinshasa Derby has a history of aggressive crowd unrest. The clash between ASV Club and Tout Puissant Mazembe in 2014 tragically saw 15 killed in a stampede.
The CAF president Issa Hayatou last year had re-emphasized that acts of violence have no place in football. But as today's catastrophe sadly lays bare, the Congolese football federation has to make major changes to ensure the protection of it's football players and fans.

BRAZZAVILLE (Reuters) - Turnout in Congo's referendum on Sunday was reduced to a trickle in the capital after the opposition asked voters to boycott the vote on whether the president can legally stand for a third consecutive term at next year's election.
President Denis Sassou Nguesso, 71, is the latest long-serving African president to try to prolong his grip on power by changing the constitution. Several other such efforts have provoked violence, and four died in Congo Republic last week when security forces opened fire on protesters.
In some parts of the capital, the only voters were members of the security forces, witnesses said. There was no information on turnout in other parts of the country. Polling booths closed at 6 p.m. (1700 British time) and vote counting began.
Sassou Nguesso appeared confident of victory when he voted and said he regretted that the opposition call for a boycott.
"The Congolese are a free and sovereign people .... My side will win because I know that our people love peace," he said.
Dozens of residents moved from southern neighbourhoods of Brazzaville to other areas on Saturday to avoid possible conflict, although several said they were worried they would not be able to vote as a result.
Others complained they had not received voter cards. Some people held up signs with the word "No" in protest at the vote. Analysts have warned that further violence is possible and a low turnout could also undermine the vote's credibility.
Sassou Nguesso has ruled the oil-producing country for 31 of the past 36 years and is expected to stand if permitted. He won disputed elections in 2002 and 2009, and term limits as well as his age bar him from running again as the constitution stands.
Last October, Burkina Faso's leader of 27 years was toppled by protests, and the president of Burundi won a third term in July amid violent protests. Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have also sought constitutional change.

BRAZZAVILLE (Reuters) - Voting started slowly in a referendum in Congo Republic to determine whether 71-year-old President Denis Sassou Nguesso can legally stand for a third consecutive term in next year's election.
Nguesso is the latest long-serving African president to pursue legal action to prolong his grip on power. Several other such bids have provoked violence, and four died in Congo last week when security forces opened fire on protesters.
Opposition calls for a boycott and lack of materials combined to reduce voting to a trickle at many polling stations in the capital, witnesses said. In some places, the only voters were members of the security forces.
"When the material arrived at the polling station during the night there was no one here to receive it, so they were obliged to leave it at the police post," said Gaspar Mbongo, a local election commissioner at one Brazzaville polling station. "This morning the head of the voting bureau had to get the materials back from the police station and this explains the delay."
Analysts have warned of further violence in the country, which is rich in oil. Dozens of residents moved from southern neighbourhoods of Brazzaville to other areas on Saturday to avoid conflict, although several said they were worried they would not be able to vote as a result. Others complained they had not received voter cards.
Nguesso has ruled for 31 of the past 36 years. He won disputed elections in 2002 and 2009, and under the present constitution term limits and his age bar him from running again.
Burkina Faso's leader of 27 years was toppled last October by protests, and the president of Burundi won a third term in July amid violent protests. Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have also sought constitutional change.
The legal changes offer a challenge for Western governments - they can endorse veteran leaders or press for term limits. Congo is a former French colony and President Francois Hollande said last week Sassou Nguesso had the right to consult his people.

A Congo Republic opposition leader said late on Thursday that forces from leader Denis Sassou Nguesso's presidential guard were surrounding his house, detaining him and three allies opposed to a vote on extending term limits.
A referendum on Sunday will determine whether 71-year-old Sassou Nguesso can legally stand for a third consecutive term in next year's election. The president, who has ruled for 31 of the past 36 years, is currently barred from running on account of both his age and constitutional term limits.
As in other African countries like Burkina Faso and Burundi where veteran presidents have sought to prolong their grip on power, mass protests broke out in Congo Republic, an oil-rich, former French colony, this week. Four people died when security forces opened fire on protesters, and analysts have warned of further violence.
Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas, a former minister who was dismissed for opposing constitutional change in August, said that around 50 soldiers arrived at his Brazzaville home in military jeeps Thursday morning and began patrolling the premises.

An opposition protest in the Congolese capital Kinshasa turned violent and one man was left severely beaten.
Thousands had gathered to oppose any delay in the upcoming presidential election.
Protesters suspect the ruling PPRD party of planning to postpone the vote in order to keep the current president, Joseph Kabila, in power beyond the legal end of his mandate.
DR Congo's constitution limits the number of presidential terms to two, of which Mr Kabila will have completed in November 2016.

According to Reuters, the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday banned a documentary film about a doctor who treats war rape victims, leading the film makers to say the government was trying to silence debate about sexual violence. Media Minister Lambert Mende gave no reason for the decision to ban "The Man who Mends Women, which is about Congolese gynecologist Denis Mukwege, the founder of Panzi Hospital in the eastern city of Bukavu. Sexual violence by militias and the army is a defining atrocity of a conflict in eastern Congo that has lasted two decades, and the hospital has treated thousands of rape victims. Several high-level perpetrators have recently been convicted.

Conversation & Cocktails was a summer series of guided conversations led by The McCain Institute’s directors on topics related to the Institute’s three flagship programs: Human Rights and Democracy, National Security, and Humanitarian Action.
This series offered mid-level professionals the opportunity to network and develop a knowledge base on issues such as authoritarian threats to democracy, rule of law in developing countries and humanitarian action.
August 19, 2015: Humanitarian Action
Congo Program Director Paul Fagan discussed his work regarding the humanitarian issues facing the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Eastern Congo is home to one of the worst human catastrophes in the world, with over 5 million casualties recorded - the most since World War II (in 2007, according to INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE). The Institute aims to build a democracy in Congo to escape this cycle of violence and promote human rights.

After human rights groups and the UN implicated Rwanda in the violence taking place in Rwanda, the UK and other Western states redrawn funding and support for the Rwandan government.
But the UK, in September, restored their support to Rwanda by disbursing and £8 million budgetary support to the country. Rwanda has been accused of helping M23 commit human rights abuses in DRC.
This has led many questioning the integrity of the UK over bringing peace to the region. With DRC rich in natural resources, analyst think the work of M23 is, perhaps, helping western countries to steal from the East African country.
The international development select committee (IDC) is today questioning Andrew Mitchell on his controversial decision to disburse £8m of UK budget support to the government of Rwanda, in his final hours as international development secretary and just six weeks after deciding to withhold this support, following allegations of Rwandan military backing for the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Human Rights Watch has documented egregious and systematic human rights abuses by the M23 rebels in DRC over the last six months. The group is largely made up of soldiers who mutinied from the Congolese national army in late March and May 2012.
Its senior commanders have a well-known history of serious abuses. They include General Bosco Ntaganda, who is wanted on two arrest warrants by the international criminal court for war crimes and crimes against humanity, and several other individuals involved in massacres and the recruitment of children to fight in eastern Congo.
Recent M23 abuses in eastern Congo include the deliberate killing of civilians, summary executions and rape. Among the cases we documented was that of an eight-year-old girl raped by M23 fighters. In another sickening case, a 32-year old woman in the village of Chengerero was gang raped by M23 fighters, who then poured fuel between her legs and set the fuel on fire.
The M23 have also forcibly recruited civilians into their ranks and executed some who tried to flee. These abuses and those of other armed groups have contributed to the quickly deteriorating humanitarian situation in the region, with tens of thousands of people displaced by violence and fear.

The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the least developed countries in the world.
Yet it is also home to $24tn worth of untapped mineral reserves. In the eastern hills of the country, the "three Ts" - tantalum, tungsten and tin - are mined by hand, eventually making their way into electronic devices across the world.
For a decade, advocacy groups in the US and Europe pressured technology companies to pay attention to violence-linked "conflict minerals" in their products.
Fault Lines travels to the region to hear from miners who have been struggling to make ends meet and questions advocacy groups that say Dodd-Frank 1502 has been a success.
