Why Some Black Women Are Turning to Witchcraft
Once a haven for the entire community, the Black church is losing some of its younger members to witchcraft.
Over the last 5-10 years, more Black millennials and Gen Z’ers are breaking away from Christianity as a religion and seeking Black ancestral spiritual practices. While the practice of magic and the term “witch” is often associated with whiteness, Black women have been reclaiming the space and traditions that originated in West Africa, Cuba, and Jamaica and migrated through the transatlantic slave trade. A 2021 Pew Study found that while most Black people still identify as Christian or Protestant, 15% of Black Americans surveyed say they pray at a home altar or shrine more than once a week, while 8% burn candles, incense or sage for spiritual or religious reasons as often, and 8% a...

In Romania, the homeland of Dracula and superstition, witches were pretty much spared from the medieval witch-hunts that plagued most of Europe and killed 100,000 women. In fact, witchcraft here is not only alive; it’s thriving, and it’s even feared by politicians. There are hundreds of witches in the country, and they make and break marriages, cure diseases, cast or release people from good and evil spells, and predict the future. Supposedly, one in ten Romanians visits a witch.
To find out how this influences modern Romanian society, Broadly correspondent Milène Larsson spends a week with Mihaela Minca’s witch clan and learns how to brew a love potion, cook up a curse, and even witnesses the exorcism of a woman supposedly possessed by the devil. We also meet Minca’s mother-in-law, Bratara Buzea, reputedly one of the world’s most powerful witches, who was jailed under communism when dictator Ceausescu banned witchcraft. Finally, we celebrate Summer Solstice, the year’s most important celebration, when the witches use their magical power to predict the future of mankind in the stars.

During our last several episodes, Europe and the European-controlled world have been in crisis. Wars, disease, climate changes, and shifts in religious and political power threw the European world into turmoil. People were looking for a scapegoat, and for many it was a time of magical thinking. So, maybe witches were responsible for all the problems? It was a popular idea, but, alas, the witches weren't responsible.

A 2021 Pew Study found that while most Black people still identify as Christian or Protestant, 15% of Black Americans surveyed say they pray at a home altar or shrine more than once a week, while 8% burn candles, incense or sage for spiritual or religious reasons as often, and 8% also say they consult a diviner or reader several times a week.
This new “trend” has been catapulted by social media where Black women are creating safe spaces to practice divination through astrology, tarot card readings, creating altars, and other rituals without fear of isolation or persecution.

Building the KrazyKat (5/2004 - 9/2007)
KrazyKat is a Phil Bolger design called Tiny Cat or sometime seen as Bobcat. It is a stitch-and-glue catboat. A catboat is half as wide as it is long. In this case, KrazyKat is 11.5' long (LOA) and just about 6' wide (beam). The catboat is also characterized by a short mast far forward (up in the eye of the boat). KrazyKat has a gaff rig.

Boat tour: Norfolk Gypsy - 20' gunter-rigged sailing boat (pocket cruiser)
Here's a look round my Norfolk Gypsy, a 20' gunter-rigged sailing boat. (In the video I say "gaff-rigged", but actually it's a gunter rig).
She's a shoal-draft boat (0.5m draft with centreboard up) - so able to explore shallow rivers and creeks, but also substantial enough for passages along the coast.
I run through all the main elements on deck, in the cockpit and in the cabin.

Two legends meet: Mike Golding and Gipsy Moth IV
On the eve of his departure on the solo, 2008 non-stop Vendée Globe Round the World Race, I invited Britain's top solo sailor Mike Golding to take the helm of Gipsy Moth IV -- to compare this venerable 45-year-old pathfinder with his state-of-the-art Open 60, Ecover 3
It was a bit like putting FI champion driver Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel of Grahams Hill's Lotus 49, in which he won the 1968 world title. Mike was the first person to sail non-stop around the world in both directions.
Gipsy Moth IV, a 53ft ketch, was sailed round the world in 226 days by Sir Francis Chichester in 1996-97. She was the first custom-designed yacht for breaking ocean records -- the Open 60 of her day.

Christening KrazyKat
Christening KrazyKat
KrazyKat is a Phil Bolger design called Tiny Cat or sometime seen as Bobcat. It is a stitch-and-glue catboat. A catboat is half as wide as it is long. In this case, KrazyKat is 11.5' long (LOA) and just about 6' wide (beam). The catboat is also characterized by a short mast far forward (up in the eye of the boat). KrazyKat has a gaff rig.

As editor of editor of Yachting Monthly magazine, I launched a campaign in 2004, to rescue Gipsy Moth IV as she was rotting away after 34 years in dry dock at Greenwich in London. In partnership with the UKSA in Cowes, Gipsy Moth was restored by her original builder, Camper & Nicholson, and sailed around the world (via the tropics and Panama Canal) for a 2nd time in 2006-07.
Mike's verdict: 'Gipsy Moth reminded me of the Macwester 26, Sibelius, I sailed as a youngster with my father. Later, we had a Hillyard nine-tonner with one of those reverse wheels. If it had been a tiller, instead, she wouldn't have felt much different to GMIV. As soon as you get a bit of pressure you can feel the weight in Gipsy Moth's tiller. She tells you about every wave she's going over. If you did this for several hours, you'd have blisters. She does feel safe, though, but she would be hard work for an electronic autopilot.
'Compared to Ecover, Gipsy Moth doesn't feel very connected to the helm. You put the tiller down and she doesn't want to rush around into the wind. She doesn't make much leeway, either, but she does seem to track really well. To self-steer, all you'd need is some string or a length of bungee. She's slow to accelerate, but once you get her moving, I get the feeling she's not easily stopped!
'If I was setting off around the world, I'd be thinking, 'It's okay as long as you're not worried about the time... no point in planning any engagements... you could be gone for some time!' Imagine being in the Southern Ocean. I bet that companionway hatch was shut a lot of the time! Down below, the boat is lovely and deep, so you can't fall too far. The problem with Ecover's wide beam is that you've got a long way to fall.'

MUSIC in today's video was brought to you by:
"I'm On My Way" by Martin Hall - Let me know in the comments below what you thought of that instrumental. If you liked it, I recommend that you consider supporting the musician and buying his song.
Now it's time to sit back, relax with a cup of coffee (or glass of wine...it's 5 o'clock somewhere) and enjoy! Welcome aboard!
In future videos CatBoat Adventures will explore all the special little coves, rivers and harbors where only shallow draft sailboats like CatBoats can venture. As most of us know, we call this "gunkholing" and those special shallow water places are called sailing in "skinny waters". We'll start with Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts this year. But we are also looking forward to venturing beyond into southern Cape Cod, Narragansett Bay and elsewhere in New England as well.
So let’s set out on this adventure together and have some fun. Maybe it will generate lots of conversation on the subject of gunkholing and sailing in skinny waters and maybe, in some small way, it will entice you to do the same with your boat.
Later this summer and fall I'd like to explore the following places around the Elizabeth Islands and greater Buzzards Bay area:
• Quissett Harbor
• Hadley Harbor
• West Falmouth Harbor
• Lackeys Bay
• Naushon Island
• Pasque Island Marsh
• Nashawena Harbor
• Penikese Island Harbor
• West End Pond (Cuttyhunk)
• Cuttyhunk Harbor
• Westport River
• Allen's Pond
• West Island Cove
For those who don't own a Cat Boat, and might be considering buying one, I plan on taking you behind the scenes, later this fall, to Marshall Marine and Areys Pond if we can, to see how and where these beautiful boats are manufactured. Maybe this will help you take the plunge.
