Boxcar & Burnwest

The year was 1995. A band named Boxcar sprung onto the south and central New Jersey punk scene, and had the kids screaming "where the fuck have you been all of this time?". Catchy, raw, fun, pop/punk is one thing they dished out well. They were a staple in the NJPP (New Jersey Pop Punk) scene and played shows almost every weekend with bands like Bigwig, Go Real Slow, and my band SWG, among many others. For a while Boxcar and SWG played almost every show together. We were like brother bands. Man those were good times. Times that I reflect on often, and smile about. As a matter of fact, Boxcar frontman Derek Burgess is the person who adorned me my punk rock namesake "Steve Neurotic". But that is a story left for another day. The original lineup consisted of Derek on Vox/Guitars, Chris Newman on Bass, and Jay Battle on drums. The Boxcar photos in this post are from that original lineup. In 1996 Battle left and Bnuts took over on drums for the rest of the bands duration.

Fast forward 4 years to 2000. Boxcar disbands (along with SWG, oddly enough)... and a chill period is taken. Then in 2005, Derek, and veteran Boxcar drummer Bnuts form the band BurnWest. Sadly I don't have any stories to tell about them as I had left Jersey that year... but I can tell you that with age comes some of Burgess's best song writing to date. If you were a fan of Boxcar, you can't not like BurnWest. They were around until 2008. Another band, come and gone... well before their time. These 2 bands touched the lives of many and surely will remain a memory for many people, for many years to come.

FAKE I.D. (Massachusetts Pop/Punk)

Fake I.D. was a pop/punk band from Raynham, Massachusetts that existed around 2000-2002 or so. They played in the New Found Glory/Blink 182 style that was popular during those years. I found out about them because the guitarist Brent Mulligan was the designer of my old website, poppunk.com. I made the trip up to Mass once to see them play and was impressed. The boys pumped out a number of catchy tunes. I'm not sure what happened or why they disbanded, but I know I had high hopes for them at one point.

Included in the zip file linked below is their 5 songs that they released on a split CD with bands Go48, and Carpet Patrol, Their Spring 2001 demo, and a bunch of Rough Demos that I don't believe ever got mixed or released. Enjoy !

Sefler (Pre-Saves The Day) & Exclusive Track !

Before Chris Conley gained fame and notoriety in "Saves The Day" he was the vocalist/bassist of a central New Jersey pop/punk band called "Sefler". I saw them play at a basement show of some guys house in North Brunswick, NJ and was instantly hooked.

My band SWG, ended up playing several shows with them, and Chris was even the fill-in bass player for us at a show we played with Rhythm Collision in 1996. I remember getting an unreleased 4 song demo tape from Chris, and playing the hell out of it. I always thought they'd do something great as Sefler. Unfortunately the high school aged band didn't stick around long, as Chris moved on to bigger and better things.

I always wished Sefler would've stuck around longer though, because to this day, I think that Chris's raw, emphatic voice was better suited to pop/punk.

3 of the 4 songs from the unreleased demo tape I mentioned above, ended up on their only official release..... a 7" record titled "13 Hours of Everything". The 4th song, "Dweeb" was to my surprise, never released. I say to my surprise because it was actually my favorite of the 4 songs.

To this day, I've never seen the song posted, or even mentioned anywhere online. So consider this the virgin/birthplace of "Dweeb" on the internet. If you find it anywhere else... be certain it originated here. (Hey... I've gotta give myself whatever meager props I can, eh?)

Those 4 songs are included in the zip file linked below, along with 2 extremely rare tracks "Month of Sundays" and "About Waking Up" that they released on the CD compilation called "Random Wood: Volume 1" on the tiny NJ Iguana Records, label.

Jobbernowl

Jobbernowl was a South Florida band circa late 80's, early 90's that featured Omar, the original bass player for "Quit". They were only around for a few years, but they pumped out several great releases. Enclosed in the zip file below is their "My Sight 10 inch" from Dr. Strange Records, and their 12 song Cassette only LP titled "Static Head", that I believe was self released.

Some notable tracks to get your first taste of Jobbernowl are "Regret" from the 10" and "Changed My Mind" from Static Head, which shows off Omar's awesome and catchy slap bass technique. If you dig Big Drill Car, ALL, or Brown Lobster Tank, you'll probably appreciate these guys.

Resurgents - 20 Songs

Happy 2011! Over 1 year since the last post. Been crazy busy, but still plan on adding a bunch of stuff here as time allows so check back every so often.

Another Resurgents post. This zip file contains 20 songs that I've compiled from their 4 way split CD, a few compilations, and some unreleased stuff that the vocalist Brett gave me on a Digital Audio Tape in 1997. More great songs from these Screeching Weasel / Green Day influenced Carlisle, PA boys that disbanded way too early for my liking. Enjoy. :)

Congress Of Cow (Pre-Lanemeyer) Demo

Before Chris Barker was in "Day At The Fair", and even before he was in"Lanemeyer", there lived a great band known as "Congress Of Cow". These guys spit out some catchy ass tunes like it was childs play. If you want proof, just listen to "Walking Away" or "Kristy White Song". Essentially, Congress Of Cow became Lanemeyer.... but for me... COC will always be #1.


The picture above was taken outside of a show that Shower With Goats and Congress Of Cow played together in Harrisburg, PA in 1997.... a show that neither band will ever forget (inside joke). Click on the picture for a larger size image.

Shower With Goats - Demo

I'm sure most of you have been anticipating that eventually I'd post something of my own band on here, so here goes. In May-June 1995 when I was 17 years old, Shower With Goats entered the studio for the first time under our new name (we previously went as M.N.F.S.T., a 1/2 punk 1/2 metal band... but that's a whole other blog post to "possibly" come in the future in itself).


What we recorded would be first released as an 8 song demo of 5 originals, and 3 covers. About 200 or so tapes were made and sold. After they sold out, we decided to remove the Op Ivy and Samiam covers from the tape, and re-release it as a 6 song demo (so people wouldn't think we were a cover band or something). 200 or so of those were made/sold as well.

So that's the story between the 8 song and 6 song demo. Both the same recording, only we dropped two songs for the 6 song demo.

Included in the zip file are all 8 demo tracks, cover scans of both tapes, and 2 unreleased tracks of filler shit we did in the studio (a horrible rendition of Spy Hunter, and us screaming and making animal noises). Enjoy !
