Artist Biography by

Rope-A-Dope
Tara Key is primarily known for her singing and stellar, barbed guitar heroics in the New York group Antietam. Key began her music career in Louisville, KY. Long before making the move to N.Y.C., she and boyfriend Tim Harris were members of early-'80s post-punk group the Babylon Dance Band (who reunited for an album on Matador in 1994). Key and Harris went on to form Antietam, releasing two unimpressive, relatively restrained albums in the mid-'80s. The '90s saw the group becoming prominent on the New York scene and benefiting from a friendship with Yo La Tengo's genial couple, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley. (Yo La Tengo would cover Antietam's "Orange Song" on record.) The two produced the 1990 release Burgoo, which began capitalizing on Key's angular guitar dynamics and which represented a sea change toward the aggression and assurance of later albums, particularly 1994's Rope-a-Dope. Also in 1994, Key released her solo debut, Bourbon County, which featured a more laid-back sound than Antietam and guest appearances from Kaplan and Hubley, as well as members of Eleventh Dream Day and Run On. The more focused, fully realized Ear & Echo followed in 1995. In 2000, Key and Eleventh Dream Day's Rick Rizzo teamed up for Dark Edson Tiger, a moody, atmospheric album of instrumentals released by Thrill Jockey. Riding out the album's critical acclaim, the pair played some well-chosen dates, including All Tomorrow's Parties in the U.K., and vowed to return for another go. Little did they know that it would be a decade before their second collaboration would be completed and released. Thrill Jockey issued Double Star in early 2011.

DAWN OF THE REPLICANTS One Head Two Arms Two Legs 1997

Artist Biography by

Named the "best new band of 1997" by the London Times, Dawn of the Replicants has quickly grown into one of the most inventive groups in the United Kingdom. Impossible to categorize, their music is, according to founders Paul Vickers and Roger Simian, a mix of "swamp rock, pop, glam rock, electro-, girlie jazz, doo wop, nasty ass blues, hip-hop, redneck, and experimentalism." Initially a duo, Dawn of the Replicants has expanded into a quintet with the addition of bassist Donald Kyle, guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Michael Sorenson Small and drummer/guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Grant Pringle. All have contributed original songs to the band's repertoire. While all five musicians previously worked together on the short-lived Scottish music magazine Sun Zoom Spark, their experiences had criss-crossed each other's for years. Pringle, Small, and Simian had played together in a trio, Crunchy Joseph, while Pringle and Kyle had played together in Da Hsing and Placenta Party. Small and Vickers had been members of Pennies from Heaven and Snoopy on Sax.
Northern England-born Vickers and Simian met while working for Sun Zoom Spark, shortly after Vickers had dropped out of college and moved to the borderlands of Scotland. Releasing 500 vinyl copies of their debut EP, So Far so Spitfire, the album quickly attracted attention. Melody Maker named it "single of the week." Signed by Eastwest, Dawn of the Replicants released its debut album, One Head, Two Arms, Two legs in 1998. After releasing their second effort, Wrong Town, Wrong Planet, Three Hours Late, in 1999, the group took a brief hiatus. Simian and Vickers continued to play together as Pluto Monkey, showing their expertise on Yamaha samplers and theremins instead of guitars. The offshoot band released an album, Little Brenda: Bluegrass Mission and two singles. Dawn of the Replicants' third album, Touching the Propeller, was released in 2002 on the Flying Sparks label.

DELAKOTA One Love 1998

Artist Biography by

Beginning their career with live stints in moist caves and on BBC 2's "Newsnight," Britain's Delakota strives for that tricky sonic patch between shambolic Madchester indie, nostalgic retro-rock, and scuffed-up, modern dance. Des Murphy and ex-Smashing Things Cass Browne made their group debut in 1997 with a limited white-label single, "C'mon Cincinnati," but it wasn't until a respected remix for David Holmes and the premier commercial release of "The Rock" that the band started to gain the attention of international press. The latter song's characteristic fusion of stumbling beats and Primal Scream riffs especially ignited curiosity in the British indie circles, and it wasn't long before more established groups like Embrace invited them onto their national tours. Indeed, late 1998 was additionally positive for Delakota, as the band's debut -- and Stone Roses name-checking -- One Love full-length met with an untroubled positive press as well as a strong, cult success.

BLACK GRAPE It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah 1995

AllMusic Review by

When Happy Mondays fell apart in 1992, most observers assumed that Shaun Ryder would never recover from his numerous drug addictions. No one could have ever predicted that he would return to the top of the charts three years later, relatively fit and healthy, with a new band that fulfilled all of the promises of his old group. Black Grape is what Happy Mondays always were, only better. Leaving behind the stiff musicianship that plagued even the best Mondays records, Black Grape's debut, It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah, is a surreal, funky, profane, and perversely joyous album, overflowing with casual eclecticism and giddy humor. Working with a band that is looser and grittier than the Mondays, Ryder sounds reinvigorated, creating bizarre rhymes that tie together junk culture, drug lingo, literary references, and utter nonsense. Ryder's lyrics have always been freewheelingly impenetrable, but now he's working with Kermit, a rapper that is the equal of his skills. Even better, the music has deep grooves and catchy pop hooks that come straight out of left field. From the blaring harmonica of the triumphant "Reverend Black Grape" and the trippy sitars of "In the Name of the Father" to the seedy, rolling "Shake Your Money" and the stinging guitars of "Tramazi Parti," It's Great is filled with music that goes in unconventional directions without ever sounding forced. Not only is It's Great When You're Straight a triumphant return for Ryder and his sidekick Bez, it's the first album they have ever recorded that justifies all of the hype.

SENSE FIELD Sense Field 1999

Advanced copy of unreleased CD packaged with back inlay only. Planned title was "Under The Radar" but advanced copies were titled "Sense Field".
From Wikipedia: " Initially signed to Revelation Records, they were hotly pursued by the major labels, eventually signing to Warner Bros. Records. Unfortunately the band became mired in inner-label politicking and sat in limbo for five years as the label re-staffed multiple times. They were eventually released from their contract and won the right to re-record the album they'd written for Warner Bros. Records (originally titled "Under The Radar" and later renamed Tonight & Forever)".

It's All Over Now
1999

Artist Biography

Formed from the ashes of Irish grunge trio Kerbdog, Cormac Battle (guitar/vocals) and Darragh Butler (drums) attempted a more commercial approach with their new band. After the demise of Kerbdog, following the release of their excellent second album in 1997, Battle and Butler parted company with former colleague Colin Fenelley and teamed up with old school-friend Mick Murphy to form Wilt. They signed a recording contract with Australian label Mushroom Records and reunited with former Kerbdog associated Ronan McHugh, working with the producer at Sun Studios in Dublin. Their 2000 debut, Bastinado, was named after a punishment inflicted by beating the soles of the feet. Battle and Butler’s new approach proved to be closer in style to modern power pop bands such as Fountains Of Wayne and the Dandy Warhols than their previous grunge influences. My Medicine, like its predecessor, was replete with big melodies and catchy choruses, drawing favourable reviews in both the Irish and UK music press.

TRUMAN'S WATER Apistogramma 1997

Artist Biography by

Glen Galloway (guitar), brothers Kirk and Kevin Branstetter (guitar, bass), and 69-year-old drummer Andres Malinao comprise Trumans Water. The quartet deconstruct indie rock in the style of Captain Beefheart. A modern touchstone is Pavement; the two bands have the same laid-back air, sloppy riffs, and impenetrable lyrics. In fact, Trumans Water are even more obtuse than Pavement. All of the group's early album releases are available on Homestead: Of Thick Tum (1993 reissue), Spasm Smash XXXOXOX Ox and Ass (1993), Godspeed the Punchline (1994), and Milktrain to Paydirt (1995). For 1998's Fragments of a Lucky Break, however, Trumans Water signed with Emperor Jones. After a self-titled effort in summer 2001 and 2003’s You Are in the Line of Fire and They Are Shooting at You, the band took an extended break. In 2010, Trumans Water reconvened with added bassist Mike Coumatos and drummer John Schier for their first Asthmatic Kitty release, O Zeta Zunis.
