Syrian President Bashar al-Assad lashed out at the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon's supporters on Tuesday saying they were "more racist than the Nazi's".
Assad's made the remarks during the first day of a two day summit for Arab leaders aimed at supporting Palestinians in their six-month-old uprising against Israeli occupation and forging a common policy on Iraq's dispute with Kuwait.
The gathering, held in Amman, is the first ordinary Arab summit since the 1990-1991 Gulf crisis, and attracted 14 heads of state, as well as the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Delegates had the thorny task of trying to forge a unified stance on Iraq's international isolation and reach agreement on how to deal with the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
Jordan's King Abdullah II, who takes over the one-year rotating presidency of the Arab summit with this meeting, focused on the unity theme in his opening remarks as did the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Arafat said the Palestinian issue could only be solved by Aran nations, working together.
Assad also said that Sharon is a man who hates Arabs and Muslims and it was impossible for Arabs to think that a country who voted Sharon into power wants peace.
He dismissed the idea that Sharon - who was elected Prime Minister is February - should be given time to show his peaceful intentions.
Sharon is widely hated in the Arab world for his role as architect of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
An Israeli inquiry found him indirectly to blame for the slaughter by Israeli-backed Lebanese militiamen of hundreds of unarmed Palestinian refugees in two Beirut camps.
Even Kuwait and Iraq, subjects of the most contentious debate at the summit, used their opening speeches to express their Palestinian support instead of furthering their own issues.

Arab League foreign ministers have, at an emergency meeting, condemned what they called Iran’s meddling in Arab countries’ affairs.
The ministers also accused Iran of breaking international agreements by intentionally failing to protect Saudi diplomatic missions. All members of the Arab League voted in favor of the statement, with the exception of Lebanon. Iraq’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ja’afari also said his country does not accept many points of the final statement including those which condemn the Iranian government. However, it slams those who attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran. At a press conference after the meeting, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir accused Iran of supporting quote terrorism, sectarianism and violence. Tensions rose after the kingdom executed dissident Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. The execution caused outrage among people around the world. In Iran, a group of protesters attacked the Saudi diplomatic missions in the capital Tehran and the city of Mashhad. Riyadh and a number of its allies cut or downgraded their relations with Tehran following the incident. Tehran has condemned the attack and arrested the perpetrators.

Secretary General Nabil el-Araby has called the move a blatant intervention by Ankara in the neighboring Arab state. On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi warned that Baghdad will use all available options, including the UN Security Council, if Turkey doesn't withdraw its forces within 48 hours. He stressed that Ankara’s action was in violation of Iraq’s national sovereignty. Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said that Ankara would halt further deployment of troops to northern Iraq. Also, Foreign Minister Mevlut Chavush-oglu has claimed that the deployment was aimed at training and advising Iraqi forces. Ankara deployed hundreds of military forces to a camp near Mosul in northern Iraq on Thursday, calling it part of a program to train local forces fighting against the Daesh terrorists.

Arab leaders said on Wednesday that Palestinian divisions allowed Israel to carry out its devastating strikes on the Gaza Strip and were hindering any effective Arab response.
Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said that the offensive, which he called a terrible massacre, wouldn't have happened if the Palestinians were not divided between rival Hamas and Palestinian Authority leaders.
Israel on Saturday began hitting Hamas targets across the Gaza Strip in response to repeated rocket attacks against the south of the country.
Five days into the attack some 390 Palestinians have died, according to Gaza officials.
The Arab League met to present a united Arab response in the face of widespread outrage across the region.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa also urged the Palestinians to reconcile their long schism and called on the Arab nations to present a united stance.
At the top the meeting's agenda is an Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

The ancient desert city of Yazd is located within the centre of the State Of Iran and is one of the country’s oldest cities, set like a string of pearls along the Kavir coast. It is also a centre for the followers of the Zarathustra faith, the pious predecessors of Islam who fled to the city to escape Arab persecution. A small square is situated in the middle of the Old Town district of Fahadan, flanked by historic buildings such as a prison where, according to legend, Alexander The Great held captive various Achaemenid dignitaries and which was later used as a school. The narrow streets of the historic Old Town mainly consist of mud-built buildings with partially covered corridors, domes and numerous wind towers. The maze of narrow streets in which several single-storey buildings are still inhabited has been designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The city’s largest water storage tank is dominated by six wind towers that capture the slightest breeze that in turn cool down the stored water. Nearby, Agh-E-Dolat A-Bad, the magnificent palace residence of Mohamma Taqui Khan Bafqi who was Governor of Yazd from 1747 A.D. Yazd is not only an ancient culture, it is also an Oriental dream!

Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة al-Qāhira) is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Arab World.[1] Nicknamed "The City of a Thousand Minarets" for its preponderance of Islamic architecture, Cairo has long been a center of the region's political and cultural life. Even before Cairo was established in the tenth century, the land composing the present-day city was the site of national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo. Cairo is also associated with Ancient Egypt due to its proximity to the Great Sphinx and the pyramids in nearby Giza.
Egyptians today often refer to Cairo as Maṣr (Arabic: مصر), the Egyptian Arabic pronunciation of the Arabic name for Egypt itself, emphasizing the city's continued role in Egyptian influence. Cairo has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab World, as well as the world's second-oldest institution of higher learning, al-Azhar University. Many international media, businesses, and organizations have regional headquarters in the city, and the Arab League has been based in Cairo for most of its existence.
With a population of 6.8 million[2] spread over 214 square kilometers (83 sq mi), Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt. With an additional ten million inhabitants just outside the city, Cairo resides at the center of the largest metropolitan area in Africa and the eleventh-largest urban area in the world.[1] Cairo, like many large cities in developing countries, suffers from high levels of pollution and traffic, but its metro currently the only on the African continent also ranks among the fifteen busiest in the world,[3] with over 700 million passenger rides annually.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, is home to the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the world. It has 136,000 items on display, with many more hundreds of thousands in its basement storerooms
Khan el-Khalili is an ancient shopping area, nothing less, but some of the shops have also their own little factories or workshops.
The suq (which is the Arabic name for bazaar, or market) dates back to 1382, when Emir Djaharks el-Khalili built a big caravanserai (or khan) right here. A caravanserai was a sort of hotel for traders, and usually the focal point for economic activity for any surrounding area. This caravanserai is still there, you just ask for the narrow street of Sikka Khan el-Khalili and Badestan.
The part of Cairo that contains Coptic Cairo and Fostat, which contains the Coptic Museum, Babylon Fortress, Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, many other Coptic churches, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and Amr ibn al-'As Mosque.
The Cairo Tower is a free-standing concrete TV tower in Cairo. It stands in the Zamalek district on Gezira Island in the Nile River, in the city centre. At 187 meters, it is 43 meters higher than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which stands some 15 km to the southwest.
Over the ages, and as far back as four thousand years, Egypt stood as the land where civilizations have always met.[citation needed] The Pharaohs together with the Greeks and the Romans have left their imprints here. Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula, led by Amr ibn al-A'as, introduced Islam into Egypt. Khedive Mohammad Ali, with his Albanian family roots, put Egypt on the road to modernity. If anything, the cultural mix in this country is natural, given its heritage. Egypt can be likened to an open museum with monuments of the different historical periods on display everywhere.

"We (the Syrian Opposition) asked the Arab League to cooperate with the Security Council in case they (the Arab League) cannot protect the Syrian people on their own. The Arab League should admit that it is facing difficulties in protecting the Syrian people in that manner (sending Arab observers). The Arab League - as an organisation that the Syrians will depend on in the future - should ask the Security Council to cooperate with it to find the proper tools to protect the Syrian people because it has been obvious after the visit of the observers that the killing has not stopped, the arrests did not stop and cities are still under siege."

And Security Council members have had regular briefings from the Secretariat of the United Nations about developments in Syria. But right now I think we are all waiting to hear what it is that the Arab League will be saying after their meeting on Sunday and what the interim report is from the monitors. Because the Arab League as I have said before has taken on an incredible important responsibility, and we want to defer right now to that meeting on Sunday, and let the Arabs have their own discussions first."

We didn't discuss it here but I did have the opportunity to discuss to talk with His Excellency the Foreign Minister of Egypt for example, about the question of NGOs because.....the issue of the NGOs I think has been distorted by the media a bit in both of our countries. There is a very exciting transition underway in Egypt that's been going on throughout 2011 when the Egyptian people went out onto the streets, demanded some basic rights and dignity, to have a say in how they are governed, to be able to play a role in how Egypt is governed in the future."

Members of one of Syria's largest opposition groups met with the Secretary General of the Arab League in Cairo on Thursday, to discuss the ongoing violence in Syria, despite the presence of a 100-strong team of Arab league observers.
Syrian opposition leader, Waleed al-Bunni, held talks with Arab League Secretary General, Nabil Elaraby, and called for the Arab League to ask for cooperation from the UN Security Council to help stop the bloodshed.

But it has acknowledged that its plan has failed to stop violence.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told the United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria on Sunday that his mission may be "the last chance for Syria to avoid a long and bloody civil war" and promised Russia's full support.
UN special envoy on Syria Kofi Annan met Russian President in the Vnukovo airport in Moscow on Sunday in an effort to get Russia's assistance in tackling the Syria's crisis.
Kofi Annan was in Moscow for meetings with Russia's president and foreign minister. He now travels to China, which along with Russia has shielded Syrian leader Bashar Assad from United Nations' sanctions over his crackdown on an uprising. More than 8-thousand people have been killed since the uprising began a year ago.
Syria is Moscow's last remaining ally in the Middle East and is a major customer for Russia's arms industry. But Moscow has recently shown impatience with Syria, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pointedly criticising Assad for being too slow to implement long-needed reforms.
"We will render you with all kinds of assistance at any level," Medvedev told Annan, "to the full extent of which Russia is capable of providing such assistance."

STORYLINE:
Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby said on Tuesday that the massacres taking place in Syria "amount to war crimes under international law".
Elaraby made the comments during a meeting with the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Nickolai Mladenov, at the League's headquarters in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
Elaraby spoke particularly of Aleppo, from where 200-thousand Syrians have fled over the past 10 days as the government trains its mortars, tank and helicopter gunships on neighbourhoods seized by the rebels.
The battle for Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub with around 3 million inhabitants, has now lasted longer than the rebel assault on the capital Damascus that regime troops crushed earlier in July.
Once a bastion of support for Assad, Aleppo is critical for both the regime and the opposition. Its fall would give the opposition a major strategic victory with a stronghold in the north. A rebel defeat, at the very least, would buy Assad more time.
Despite pledges by the government and opposition to implement the six-point peace plan for Syria brokered by Kofi Annan, a cease-fire never happened, and fighting has continued to escalate to a point where the conflict was recently declared a civil war.
For many diplomats and military experts, Annan's plan is all but dead.
Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Nickolai Mladenov, on Tuesday called on Syrian opposition groups to unify and agree on a leadership in preparation for a post-Assad Syria.
"I hope that we can see our friends in the Syria opposition organise more quickly to implement what under the auspices of the Arab league that they have achieved," Mladenov said. "This is the National Compact and the transition plan, because this will send a strong message to the people in Syria about the future of their country after the end of the Assad regime," he added.
Participants at a meeting of opposition groups in Cairo earlier this month (July) did agree on fundamental principles for a post-Assad Syria and a general outline to guide the opposition through a transitional period - but scuffles and fistfights during the session and a walkout by a Syrian Kurdish group visibly demonstrated the opposition's disarray.
The fighting in Aleppo stretched into its 11th day on Tuesday.
Despite regime claims of success and repeated forays by tanks and ground forces into rebel-controlled areas in the northeast and southwest of the city, the rebels appear to have held their ground,
prompting government forces to resort to more shelling by artillery and mortars. Rebel positions are also being attacked with helicopter gunships.
The Syrian government has defended its assault on Aleppo to the U.N., describing a city in the grip of "terrorist mercenaries" funded by Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, that are holding people hostage as human shields and committing "horrifying crimes."

The Western Sahara is a disputed territory in the Maghreb region of North Africa, bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the extreme northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its surface area amounts to 266,000 square kilometres (103,000 sq mi). It is one of the most sparsely populated territories in the world, mainly consisting of desert flatlands. The population is estimated at just over 500,000, of whom nearly 40% live in El Aaiún (also spelled Laâyoune), the largest city in Western Sahara.
Occupied by Spain since the late 19th century, the Western Sahara has been on the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories since 1963 after a Moroccan demand.[4] It is the most populous territory on that list, and by far the largest in area. In 1965, the UN General Assembly adopted its first resolution on Western Sahara, asking Spain to decolonise the territory. One year later, a new resolution was passed by the General Assembly requesting that a referendum be held by Spain on self-determination.
In 1975, Spain relinquished the administrative control of the territory to a joint administration by Morocco (which had formally claimed the territory since 1957) and Mauritania.[6] A war erupted between those countries and the Sahrawi national liberation movement, the Polisario Front, which proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) with a government-in-exile in Tindouf, Algeria. Mauritania withdrew in 1979, and Morocco eventually secured effective control of most of the territory, including all the major cities and natural resources.
Since a United Nations-sponsored ceasefire agreement in 1991, two thirds of the territory (including most of the Atlantic coast line)[8] has been controlled by Morocco and the remainder by the SADR, strongly backed by Algeria.[9] Internationally, countries such as the United States and Russia have taken a generally ambiguous and neutral position on each side's claims, and have pressed both parties to agree on a peaceful resolution. Both Morocco and Polisario have sought to boost their claims by accumulating formal recognition, essentially from African, Asian, and Latin American states in the developing world. The Polisario Front has won formal recognition for SADR from 53 states, and was extended membership in the African Union. Morocco has won recognition or support for its position from several African governments and from most of the Arab League. In both instances, recognitions have, over the past two decades, been extended and withdrawn according to changing international trends.[citation needed] As of 2006, no other member state of the United Nations has recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Morocco (Listeni/məˈrɒkoʊ/; Arabic: المغرب al-Maġrib; Berber: Muṛṛakuc; French: Maroc[Notes 1]), officially the Kingdom of Morocco,[4] is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Geographically, Morocco is characterized by a rugged mountainous interior and large portions of desert. It is one of only three countries (with Spain and France) to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. The Arabic name al-Mamlakah al-Maghribiyah (Arabic: المملكة المغربية, meaning "The Western Kingdom") and Al-Maghrib (Arabic: المغرب, meaning "The West") are commonly used as alternate names.
Morocco has a population of over 33.8 million and an area of 446,550 km2 (172,410 sq mi). Its political capital is Rabat, although the largest city is Casablanca; other major cities include Marrakesh, Tangier, Tetouan, Salé, Fes, Agadir, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra, and Nador. A historically prominent regional power, Morocco has a history of independence not shared by its neighbours. Its distinct culture is a blend of Arab, indigenous Berber, Sub-Saharan African, and European influences.
Morocco claims the non-self-governing territory of Western Sahara as its Southern Provinces. Morocco annexed the territory in 1975, leading to a guerrilla war with indigenous forces until a cease-fire in 1991. Peace processes have thus far failed to break the political deadlock.
Morocco is a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament. The King of Morocco holds vast executive and legislative powers, especially over the military, foreign policy and religious affairs. Executive power is exercised by the government, while legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of parliament, the Assembly of Representatives and the Assembly of Councillors. The king can issue decrees called dahirs which have the force of law. He can also dissolve the parliament after consulting the Prime Minister and the president of the Constitutional court.
Morocco's predominant religion is Islam, while the official languages are Berber and Arabic. Moroccan Arabic, referred to as Darija, and French are also widely spoken. Morocco is an influential member of the Arab League and a part of the Union for the Mediterranean. It has the sixth-largest economy in Africa.

"Well, what we are doing at the moment, the secretary-general Amr Moussa, he's doing the job and we are fully supporting his mission and we are trying now, after his report... The difficulty is the numbers of the governments(representations) between the parties, that's what we are now tackling to reach a solution for it."
(Q: Did you reach any kind of solution?)
"Well the Lebanese will have to agree (on) something. We'll help the Lebanese but they have to agree about the numbers and about the unity government, not us."

5. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Amr Moussa, Arab League chief:
"There is an agreement (between the parliament majority and the opposition) on the name of the Lebanese president, and we have agreed with them on not raising any obstacles regarding this on the way of electing him."

7. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Amr Moussa, Arab League chief: (reading a document)
"The secretary general of the Arab league will try sorting out participant's percentage in the government with both parliament majority and the opposition in order to reach a unified solution and this is very important. We need a unified stand not for the majority and not (in favour) of the opposition."

STORYLINE:
Arab foreign ministers on Sunday rejected Syria's demand that Hezbollah and its allies have greater representation in Lebanon's Cabinet, according to delegates at an emergency meeting in Cairo.
Participants at the Arab League meeting late on Sunday said the majority of ministers rejected Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem's request for a new formula for Lebanese politics.
Moallem had pushed for Hezbollah to have ten ministers in the next Cabinet - or one-third of the seats - which would effectively give the Hezbollah-led opposition veto power.
Two delegates at the meeting confirmed the information, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
They spoke to The Associated Press by telephone, while the meeting was still under way.
Only Libyan Foreign Minister Abdel Rahman Shalgam backed the Syrian proposal, the officials said.
Lebanon is embroiled in its worst political crisis since the end of its 1975-90 civil war.
Former President Emile Lahoud left office on November 23 without a successor, and parliament has so far failed to elect the army chief to replace him amid bickering between the parliament majority and the opposition.
At a news conference after Sunday's meeting, Arab League Chief Amr Moussa predicted further violence if Lebanon did not elect a new president by February 11 - a date set by the parliament speaker last week.
Earlier in the day, seven people were killed in Beirut during riots by opposition supporters protesting the government's rationing of electricity.
The Arab League chief put particular blame for the crisis on pro-Syrian groups in Lebanon, saying they intentionally held up the elections with new demands.
"The secretary general of the Arab league will try sorting out participant's percentage in the government with both parliament majority and the opposition in order to reach a unified solution and this is very important. We need a unified stand not for the majority and not (in favour) of the opposition," Amr Moussa said.
Moussa also warned that an Arab leadership summit scheduled for March 28 in Damascus might be put off if the Lebanese crisis remained unresolved.
It also calls on Lebanon to form a national unity government and adopt a new election law.
