Raising its black flag over the rugged mountainous regions of Afghanistan, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has emerged as a new threat to the war-ravaged country as it battles the Taliban for supremacy.
Employing violence and brutality used by the group in Syria and Iraq, Wilayat Khorasan, (the ancient name ISIL has chosen for the region made up of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of neighbouring countries), has emerged in seven different areas and vowed to step up operations, where the veteran fighters, the Taliban, once held sway.
Fighting to reconstitute the historical Khorasan into the so-called 'Caliphate' of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group says it has grand plans for the region, starting with uprooting the Taliban and the government of President Ashraf Ghani.
Causing friction with the regional and overall leadership of the Taliban, armed battles have increased over the past few months with dozens of Taliban fighters killed in the clashes, most notably in the Taliban stronghold of Nangarhar province.
ISIL's local chapter has also managed to attract dozens of fighters from the Taliban's ranks into its fold, while foreign fighters unable to make it to Syria and Iraq have thronged to the group's territory.
In ISIL and the Taliban we look at the group's growing popularity, how it made steady inroads into the country and the threat it poses for the future of Afghanistan.
We gain exclusive access to ISIL's central leadership, and meet children as young as 5-years-old being trained to fight and dedicate their lives to the 'Caliphate'.

The cameraman had this to say to after submitting the footage to FUNKER530:
This patrol was a relief in place and I was on point leading the new guys in for the RIP. We hadn't taken much contact in this area, and it was generally considered a "safe" zone in Logar Province.
We patrolled the area frequently, and the locals would regularly thank us for pushing the Taliban away from their village so they could live their daily lives without constant threat.
The Taliban that we came across during this patrol were actually setting up to shoot down our new surveillance balloon that was launched in the area. The balloon caught the entire fight on camera from above, which confirmed that we killed 3 Taliban fighters during this engagement.
I saw the first guy shoulder his RPG, take a knee, and point it directly at me from about 15 meters away. I'm not sure if it was luck, but I shot first and hit him twice. The rest of the team engaged immediately after.
At the end of the day there were no friendly casualties, and we had eliminated 3 Taliban fighters.
I wanted to share the video with the world because I was sick of hearing all the ignorant things said about what we are doing over there. People need to understand what it's like on the ground for the troops on the front line, and see what we have to deal with on a daily basis without some political spin on the story.
This footage has been edited to exclude the close up graphic footage of the enemy KIA.
This footage is part of an ongoing documentary of the war in Afghanistan from the soldiers' point of view.

In late September, the Taliban launched an offensive against Kunduz, a provincial capital in northern Afghanistan, capturing key buildings and freeing hundreds of prisoners from the city’s jail.
The offensive sparked a fierce battle between the militants and government forces, supported by US airstrikes. After several days of fighting, Afghan troops recaptured the city, and took down the Taliban's flag from the central square.
American planes targeted Taliban positions, but at the beginning of October, a hospital run by medical charity Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) was hit, killing 22 hospital staff and patients, with many seriously injured. The Pentagon later admitted that the strike was a mistake.
Gaining exclusive access to the Taliban, VICE News filmmaker Nagieb Khaja spoke to fighters that briefly took control of Kunduz — the first major city to fall to the group since it was ousted from power in 2001.

A 13 hour long battle ensues in Afghanistans East Paltika Province, after which American forces retrieve a video camera from a killed Taliban fighter. This is what was found on that video camera. You may notice in the video a few Caucasian faces. These individuals were actually originally German hostages, but had been converted to Islam. They were fighting alongside the Taliban, and were eventually killed.

The Taliban are one of the most reviled, controversial, and arguably misunderstood, political movements in history. We went to Pakistan to invesitage why suicide bombings, IED use, and the Taliban are all growing at alarming rates.
In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it's all taken a devastating toll on the country and is creating the next generation of militants.

Afghanistan expects to restart peace talks with the Taliban within six months, Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah says.
SHOWS: NEW DELHI, INDIA (FEBRUARY 4, 2016) (REUTERS - ACCESS ALL)
Afghanistan expects to restart peace talks with the Taliban within six months, Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah said on Thursday (February 4), pinning hopes on factions he said might be ready to give up violence.
Talks between Kabul and the Afghan Taliban have been on hold since efforts collapsed last year after it became known that Mullah Mohammad Omar, the movement's founder and leader, had been dead for two years, throwing the group into disarray.
Abdullah said that Omar's death had left the Taliban deeply divided, making peace negotiations complicated, but there was reason to hope that talks to end 15 years of bloodshed could resume.
"There might be groups among the Taliban who might be willing to talk and give up violence," Abdullah told Reuters in an interview in New Delhi, where he held talks with Indian leaders on bilateral issues.
"It should be sooner than six months," Abdullah said, when asked when he expected talks with the Taliban to begin.
He said there had been some contact between Taliban factions willing to give up violence and Afghan security agencies, but he declined to give further details.
His comments came ahead of a meeting between four powers - the United States, China, Pakistan and Afghanistan - in Islamabad on February 6 to lay the ground for talks that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's government wants to conduct with the insurgent group.
China had a role to play in the Afghan peace process because of the challenge it faced in its Xinjiang province from the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which was also fighting alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan, Abdullah said.
Equally important were Beijing's close ties with Pakistan, Abdullah added, because that could help coax the Taliban to the negotiating table.
The Afghan Taliban leadership, now headed by Mullah Akhtar Mansour, has long sheltered in Pakistan from where they have waged a deadly insurgency.
China, Pakistan and the United States had agreed to use their influence to facilitate talks with the Taliban, Abdullah said.
The countries are discussing issues including where to hold talks with Taliban factions who decide to come to the table and what to do about those who stay away, he added.
Any talks with the Taliban will be led by the Afghans, he said.
"How it moves forward and what it takes, nobody can judge at this stage," Abdullah said.
Despite efforts to restart negotiations, the Taliban have ramped up their campaign of violence across Afghanistan from the start of the year, with suicide attacks and territorial gains in southern Helmand province.
Last month they reiterated their demand for the release of political prisoners as a condition to rejoin talks. They have also asked to be removed from a U.N. blacklist under which senior leaders cannot travel freely and their assets are frozen.
Abdullah said he expected U.S. forces to remain in Afghanistan beyond 2016 in some form and that an extended presence was necessary to support the government.
"The reality is that there is this number of troops and they are doing an effective job in support of our institutions, in equipping, in assisting, in training," Abdullah said.
"My perception is that the presence will continue beyond 2016 in one form or another, and that is needed."
A Pentagon report released in December said the security situation in Afghanistan deteriorated in the second half of 2015, with Taliban militants staging more attacks and inflicting far more casualties on Afghan forces.
The outlook prompted U.S. President Barack Obama to announce in October that he would maintain a force of 9,800 troops in Afghanistan through most of 2016, instead of drawing down to an embassy-based presence by 2017.

Though only an hour from Kabul, armed Taliban fighters walk openly in the streets, and government and Western forces are entirely absent. Khaja bears witness to the parallel administration the Taliban has built in Charkh and hears testimony from the population—including from the families of civilian casualties of Afghan National Army bombings.
Khaja is the first Western journalist to film a Taliban Sharia court, where he witnesses a case in which the defendant is a Taliban member and the outcome is surprising. He also visits local boys and girls schools run in concert with the Taliban.
"This is Taliban Country" shows a defiant Taliban determined to continue attacking Afghan National Army bases and keep control of the region.

Out of bounds for most Pakistanis, this report gains rare access to a deeply troubled corner of Pakistan. The army claims it has South Waziristan under control, but is it a ticking time bomb of extremism?
In a military hospital in Islamabad, hundreds of "profoundly damaged and disabled" soldiers are being treated. They've come from the western tribal belt, where for the last nine years Pakistan has been waging a largely hidden war against extremists. "There has been this double game that has gone on for many years, of Pakistan supporting the NATO presence in Afghanistan and at the same time allowing the Afghan Taliban to operate against the NATO forces", explains Pakistan's foremost expert on Islamists in the region, Ahmed Rashid. He claims the government's duplicity has radicalised a local variant of the Taliban. "There is now a full-scale extremist movement in Pakistan that is trying to overthrow the State." The agents of some of the worst acts of global terrorism inhabit this remote frontier. Yet many local villagers claim life under the Taliban "was normal" and "nobody was afraid". They argue the army intervention in the region has only been destructive. In an attempt to win hearts and minds, the army has opened a high school for girls, which aid workers argue is "critical for countering extremism". However Pakistan's Taliban vow they're determined "to escalate the war".

More than 200 Taliban children, many recruited as suicide bombers, are being held in special prisons across Afghanistan. Brought to you by the foremost documentarian on the Taliban and film maker of 'The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan', we meet these captured child fighters and hear their stories.
As NATO prepares to pull out of Afghanistan, they leave behind a country at the mercy of a resurgent Taliban. Vulnerable children are easy prey, many of whom have known nothing but war. The next generation aren't simply witnesses to the ongoing fighting; some of them have also become participants.
"The Taliban are good. The Taliban are building our country", a young boy tells the camera, head on. This is Afghanistan's terrorist generation. "It was one of these vests. They told me to blow myself up at a checkpoint". 10-year-old Neaz was offered 50 Afghanis (60p) for his young life. He was seized by the Taliban after the death of his family and prized for this special mission. As well as suicide mission preparations, their crimes include the laying of improvised explosive devices and ambush.
From the unrepentant to the lucky ones who got away, the willing and the reluctant, Taliban Child Fighters documents the experiences of captured child fighters. With unprecedented access, in and out of jails, it provides a unique perspective on an ongoing conflict, raising key questions about the legacy of western intervention in Afghanistan.

Taliban Child Fighters: Meet the children imprisoned for attempted suicide bombings and other militant actions carried out by the Afghanistan Taliban

Yvonne Ridley : "... They were bombing and decimating the population for reasons only known to the USA and its Allies. The poor Taliban had no idea why America wished to invade Afghanistan. They had heard of this as a 'mishap' but had no idea of the enormity of the tragedy. They did not know of the complexity of the buildings and people jumping out of towers 100 stories high, as they did not have TV's nor did they know a tower when they were told about it..."
BE INSPIRED, AS YVONNE RIDLEY, A PASSIONATE BRITISH JOURNALIST, DESCRIBES THE STORY OF HOW SHE WAS HELD CAPTIVE BY TALIBAN SOLDIERS IN AFGHANISTAN.
INTIMIDATED BY THEIR PRESENCE, SHE PERSISTED WITH GREAT FIGHTING ZEAL TO RETURN HOME TO HER AWAITING FAMILY. SIT WITH HER IN INTERROGATIONS, WAR TORN AFGHAN JAIL FACILITIES AND THEN SHED TEARS OF SORROW AND JOY AS THIS TOUCHING STORY UNFOLDS.
