Bush on Thursday made the first visit to Slovakia by an American president since the country gained its independence in 1993. Bush met Slovakian President Ivan Gasparovic and Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda in Slovakia''s medieval Bratislava Castle on Thursday. Flanked by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and first lady Laura Bush, the president signed a guestbook at the palace before his closed-door talks with Gasparovic. In an address to a crowd gathered on a Bratislava''s, Hviezdoslav''s Square in a light snowfall, Bush saluted the ex-communist country for standing with the United States and its other European allies. Bush hailed Slovaks on Thursday as allies in the fight for global freedom and thanked the country for deploying a small contingent of troops to Iraq. He said Slovaks are "showing that a small nation built on a big idea can spread liberty throughout the world." Mikula Dzurinda, Slovakia''s Prime Minister, said that his country would support U.S. policy based on "advancing freedom and democracy" and "based on preventing nuclear proliferation." Slovakia has deployed about 100 non-combat troops to Iraq, mostly for de-mining operations, and has sent soldiers to Afghanistan.
