This World War II German newsreel was retrieved from a U.S. Navy archive, and is now part of the Periscope Film collection. Made for propaganda purposes during the war by the German newsreel company Degeto Weltspiegel and sold to the home market in Germany, these newsreels provide a fascinating look at the German military. These German newsreels were seized by the U.S. government following the war, and ended up in the collection of the U.S. government.
The occupation of Lithuania by Nazi Germany lasted from the German invasion of Soviet Union to the end of the Battle of Memel (June 22, 1941 to January 28, 1945). At first the Germans were welcomed as "liberators" from the repressive Soviet regime which occupied Lithuania prior to the German arrival. In hopes of re-establishing independence or regaining some autonomy, Lithuanians organized their Provisional Government. Soon the Lithuanian attitudes towards the Germans changed into passive resistance.
The occupation of Latvia by Nazi Germany was completed on July 10, 1941 by Germany's armed forces. Latvia became a part of Nazi Germany's Reichskommissariat Ostland — the Province General of Latvia. Anyone who opposed the German occupation, as well as those who had cooperated with the Soviet Union, were killed or sent to concentration camps.

"My Latvia" is a stirring documentary featurette of the illegal Soviet military occupation of the three then-autonomous Baltic states in 1940. This unusual film, made by filmmaker Albert Jekste who worked for the republic of Latvia prior to the Soviet occupation, illuminates communist methods of internal subversion and conquest. It includes rare scenes of Stalin and other Soviet leaders attending closed Kremlin meetings, and examines the criminal background of the Latvian nationals who invited the Soviets into that country and subsequently assumed high communist government posts. The film was funded by the United States Information Service as part of Cold War efforts to alert the American public to the Communist threat.
Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, one of the three Baltic states. It is bordered by Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, and Belarus, as well as a maritime border to the west with Sweden. Latvia is a democratic parliamentary republic established in 1918. The capital city is Riga, the European Capital of Culture 2014.
In 1944, when Soviet military advances reached the area, heavy fighting took place in Latvia between German and Soviet troops, which ended in another German defeat. In the course of the war, both occupying forces conscripted Latvians into their armies, in this way increasing the loss of the nation's "live resources". In 1944, part of the Latvian territory once more came under Soviet control. The Soviets immediately began to reinstate the Soviet system. After the German surrender, it became clear that Soviet forces were there to stay, and Latvian national partisans, soon joined by German collaborators, began to fight against the new occupier.
Anywhere from 120,000 to as many as 300,000 Latvians took refuge from the Soviet army by fleeing to Germany and Sweden. Most sources count 200,000 to 250,000 refugees leaving Latvia, with perhaps as many as 80,000 to 100,000 of them recaptured by the Soviets or, during few months immediately after the end of war,[48] returned by the West. The Soviets reoccupied the country in 1944–45, and further deportations followed as the country was collectivised and Sovieticised.
On 25 March 1949, 43,000 rural residents ("kulaks") and Latvian patriots ("nationalists") were deported to Siberia in a sweeping Operation Priboi in all three Baltic states, which was carefully planned and approved in Moscow already on 29 January 1949. Between 136,000 and 190,000 Latvians, depending on the sources, were imprisoned, repressed or deported to Soviet concentration camps (the Gulag) in the post war years, from 1945 to 1952. Some managed to escape arrest and joined the partisans.
Latvia was made to adopt Soviet farming methods. Rural areas were forced into collectivization. An extensive programme to impose bilingualism was initiated in Latvia, limiting the use of Latvian language in official uses in favour of using Russian as the main language. All of the minority schools (Jewish, Polish, Belorussian, Estonian, Lithuanian) were closed down leaving only two media of instructions in the schools: Latvian and Russian. An influx of labourers, administrators, military personnel and their dependants from Russia and other Soviet republics started. By 1959 about 400,000 people arrived from other Soviet republics and the ethnic Latvian population had fallen to 62%.

I traveled to Riga for only 4 days and managed to see and do a lot in that short given timeframe. Riga is the largest city of the Baltics and offers a lot of cool things to do in Riga itself but also just a short train ride out of the center in Sigulda.
This video showcases the combination of a city trip and and action packed day out in the nature. My personal highlight has been the flight in the vertical wind tunnel "Aerodium" near Sigulda - if you feel like you can even go Bungee Jumping there.

Latvia Adventure Travel: If you're yearning to hit Europe's untrodden jackpot, cash in your chips in Latvia (Latvija). Still undiscovered by the tourism masses, this sizzling Baltic sexpot is poised to become the continent's next A-list star. A country in transition, hellbent on shedding its stalwart old-Soviet image, the Latvia of today is vibrant, enigmatic and altogether mesmerising. Refreshingly unpretentious, Latvia manages to tantalise even the most jaded traveller. Many arrive expecting little and leave overwhelmed, certain they've uncovered long-buried treasure.
Latvian amber was known in places as far away as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In the 12th century, German traders arrived, bringing with them missionaries who attempted to convert the pagan Finno-Ugric and Baltic tribes to the Christian faith. The Germans founded Rīga in 1201, establishing it as the largest and most powerful city on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. After independence in 1918, Latvia achieved considerable results in social development, economy, industry and agriculture. It has always been a multicultural melting point, where foreigners and locals worked together and brought prosperity to the country. On June 16, 1940, Vyacheslav Molotov presented the Latvian representative in Moscow with an ultimatum accusing Latvia of violations of that pact, and on June 17 Soviet forces occupied the country. Elections for a "People's Saeima" were held, and a puppet government headed by Augusts Kirhenšteins led Latvia into the USSR. The annexation was formalized on August 5, 1940. During the time of the Iron Curtain, Latvia was a province of the Soviet Union, but the concentration of heavy industry was enormous. Contacts with the West were regulated. The Baltic region had the reputation of being the most urbanized and having the highest literacy rate in the Soviet Union. Latvia gained independence on September 6, 1991. Between 1991 and 2007 the country saw unprecedented economic growth. However, the global recession and the banking crisis hit Latvia brutally, and severe economic contraction and destructively high unemployment have returned.
Because of a tribal past and divisions between occupying nations, there are regional differences between parts of Latvia which are interesting to explore.

We have recently embarked on a bus tour of the Baltic countries. Riga, the capital of Latvia, was the second city on the tour. The old town has a number of cobbled stone streets and beautiful old buildings. Riga boasts a large collection of art nouveau buildings.
We ended our time in Latvia with a visit to the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia which has original 300 year old wooden houses and churches.

The Latvian capital Riga will officially be unveiled as the 2014 European Capital of Culture on January 17 to 19, 2014. Riga is the gem of the Baltics. It is situated at the mouth of the Daugava, on the shores of the Gulf of Riga on the Baltic. Riga has an ancient history and rich cultural heritage. As Riga has always been located at a juncture of trading routes, it is a multicultural city which means there are things to see here: a weekend in Riga is a great way to gather new impressions and to relax.
Travellers can admire the diverse architecture of Riga, especially the art nouveau buildings. Riga has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the collection of art nouveau buildings that is one of the largest in the world, as well as a city in whose architecture the entire history from 1201 to the present day is reflected. It is also valued as a city with a unique collection of wooden developments in its central section.
In the course of history, Riga has traditionally served as a crossroads for trade and business between east and west. In 1282 it became a member of the Hanseatic League and remained an active member until its disintegration some 300 years later.
Riga has an active cultural life. The Dome Cathedral is renowned throughout the world for its acoustics and giant organ. It is worth attending one of the organ music concerts it offers. Various music festivals, from early music to opera to jazz and rock, take place in Riga, especially in the summer months. One can also visit a vast array of exciting museum exhibitions and contemporary art galleries in Riga. The city is distinguished by its great air, rail and road connections which render it the largest tourist centre in the country.

Take a tour of House of Blackheads in Riga, Latvia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The town hall area of Riga, Latvia, rich in history and beautiful architecture, reflects a town that is full of authority.
The House of Blackheads was built by the Brotherhood of Blackheads as a guild for single German merchants.
In 2001, when the city celebrated its 800th anniversary the reconstruction of this structure was given its original 14th century appearance.
In 1948 the Soviets destroyed The House of Blackheads for they rejected any influence of German architecture.
This beautiful, Gothic building is now a home to a museum and a concert hall.
Today, The House of Blackheads is a fundamental part of Riga's architectural history.

People and Power - The Baltic and the Bear
For months, NATO has been building up its military presence in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania amid fears that, after the Russian sponsored separatist conflict in Eastern Ukraine, their turn may be next.
But have these nations, part of the Soviet Union until the early 1990s, been adding to the tension by discriminating against their large ethnic-Russian minorities?

The documentary "Under Latvian flags. The birth of heroes" is the story about formation of Latvian military units in World War I (with English subtitles).

In 2011 the documentary „Eight Full Moons” by Ģirts Straustiņš, Sandijs Semjonovs and Zane Peneze was demonstrated in cinemas in Riga and all around Latvia.
The movie was filmed in Afghanistan, and it allows audience to witness the events on the frontline. The authors of movie state: “This is not the story about the war against terrorism, this is the story about the ways in which the war changes men.”
Interviews with soldiers before the battle and after dramatic events which might have cost them their lives show the true face of the war.
Directors of the movie spent five weeks in one of the most dangerous places in the world – Kunar Valley on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan where the US and Latvian Operational and Mentoring Liaison Team operated.

For many years after the Cold War, the Baltic Sea region was characterized by low tensions, increased cooperation, including the military field, and the sea itself was described as a new Mare Nostrum of the surrounding states and the EU. Against the backdrop of Russian action in Ukraine, this situation has drastically and rapidly changed.
The seminar "Baltic Sea Region: the Dynamics of a changing strategic playingfield" aimed to deepen the understanding of the changing strategic situation and military environment in the Baltic Sea region, as well as to assess challenges and opportunities ahead for actors that are involved in the security of the region.
This seminar was organized in Visby, Gotland on June 1-3, 2015, by the Swedish Institute of International Affairs on comission by the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters and the United States European Command.
Speakers:
Zaneta Ozolina, Professor of International Relations, University of Latvia
Tobias Etzold, Research Associate, German Institute for International and Security Affairs, SWP
Kadri Liik, Senior Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations, ECFR
Constanze Stelzenmueller, Robert Bosch Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution
Eugeniusz Smolar, foreign and security policy analyst, Warsaw, Senior fellow and former President of the Center for International Relations (CIS).

Did Stalin Start World War 2? The Secret Plans to Conquer Europe (2009)

The Soviet Union began World War II with a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany, the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, signed on 23 August 1939. In addition to stipulations of non-aggression, the treaty included a secret protocol that divided territories of Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland into German and Soviet "spheres of influence", anticipating potential "territorial and political rearrangements" of these countries.[1] Stalin and Hitler later traded proposals for a Soviet entry into the Axis Pact.
Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, and Joseph Stalin ordered his own invasion of Poland on 17 September.[2] Part of southeastern (Karelia) and Salla region in Finland were annexed by the Soviet Union after the Winter War. This was followed by Soviet annexations of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and parts of Romania (Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina and the Hertza region). It was only in 1989 that the Soviet Union admitted the existence of the secret protocol of the Nazi-Soviet pact regarding the planned divisions of these territories.[1]
In June 1941, Hitler launched an invasion of the Soviet Union, prior to which Stalin had ignored reports of a German invasion. Stalin was confident that the total Allied war machine would eventually stop Germany,[3] and the Soviets stopped the Wehrmacht some 30 kilometers from Moscow. Over the next four years, the Soviet Union repulsed German offensives, such as at the Battle of Stalingrad and Battle of Kursk, and pressed forward to victory in large Soviet offensives such as the Vistula-Oder Offensive. Stalin began to listen to his generals more after Kursk.
The bulk of Soviet fighting took place on the Eastern Front—including a continued war with Finland—but it also invaded Iran (August 1941) in cooperation with the British and late in the war attacked Japan (August 1945).
Stalin met with Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Tehran Conference and began to discuss a two-front war against Germany and future of Europe after the war. Berlin finally fell in April 1945, but Stalin was never fully convinced his nemesis Adolf Hitler had committed suicide.
Fending off the German invasion and pressing to victory in the East required a tremendous sacrifice by the Soviet Union, which suffered the highest military casualties in the war, losing approximately 20 million men.
Stalin became personally involved with questionable tactics employed during the war, including the Katyn massacre, Order No. 270, Order No. 227 and NKVD prisoner massacres. Controversy also surrounds rapes and looting in Soviet-held territory, along with large numbers of deaths of POWs held by the Soviets, and the Soviets' abusive treatment of their own soldiers who had been held in German POW camps.
Viktor Suvorov suggested that Stalin had made aggressive preparations beginning in the late 1930s and was preparing to invade Germany in the summer 1941. He believes that Hitler forestalled Stalin and the German invasion was in essence a pre-emptive strike, precisely as Hitler claimed. This theory was supported by Igor Bunich, Joachim Hoffmann, Mikhail Meltyukhov (see Stalin's Missed Chance) and Edvard Radzinsky (see Stalin: The First In-Depth Biography Based on Explosive New Documents from Russia's Secret Archives). Other historians, especially Gabriel Gorodetsky and David Glantz, reject this thesis.[54] General Fedor von Boch's diary says that the Abwehr fully expected a Soviet attack against German forces in Poland no later than 1942.
In the initial hours after the German attack began, Stalin hesitated, wanting to ensure that the German attack was sanctioned by Hitler, rather than the unauthorized action of a rogue general.[55] Accounts by Nikita Khrushchev and Anastas Mikoyan claim that, after the invasion, Stalin retreated to his dacha in despair for several days and did not participate in leadership decisions.[56] But, some documentary evidence of orders given by Stalin contradicts these accounts, leading historians such as Roberts to speculate that Khrushchev's account is inaccurate.[57]
Stalin soon quickly made himself a Marshal of the Soviet Union, then country's highest military rank and Supreme Commander in Chief of the Soviet Armed Forces aside from being Premier and General-Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of the Soviet Union that made him the leader of the nation, as well as the People's Commissar for Defense, which is equivalent to the U.S. Secretary of War in the at that time and the U.K. Minister of Defense and formed the State Defense Committee to coordinate military operations with himself also as Chairman. He chaired the Stavka, the highest defense organization of the country. Meanwhile, Marshal Georgy Zhukov was named to be the Deputy Supreme Commander in Chief of the Soviet Armed Forces.

70 ago Europe was severely threatened by Fascism, but is the continent now witnessing a nationalist renaissance? One former Latvian Waffen SS fighter openly presents his perspective on the situation, while survivors from Salaspils, a concentration camp in Latvia, are disturbed and terrified by recent events, sharing their heartbreaking memories. Salaspils is a dark page in human history, in history of Latvia, perhaps that’s why so many seem to be trying to rewrite it.
