Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister Adel AL-Jubeir spoke to euronews’ Daleen Hassan after the talks in Vienna last week (30 October). The talks were focused on Syria, but also addressed issues in Yemen.
“We have maintained that Bashar al-Assad has no role in Syria’s future and that he must leave at some point in this process. So we have always called for this and our position has not changed. We have also called for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Syria, we believe for example that the Iranian forces are occupying forces in Syria. This is unacceptable. We have reiterated this position today during the meeting."
"There was an agreement at the meeting with regards to a commitment to a Syria whose territorial integrity is maintained, a future Syria that would be democratic in which the rights of all its minorities and citizens are protected. There was agreement on the need to provide for more humanitarian access so that we can provide humanitarian supplies to the Syrian people.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif sits down with Margaret Warner of PBS to discuss Iranian foreign policy and the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. Though Zarif is strongly supportive of efforts to oppose and defeat ISIS, he is skeptical of the potential effectiveness of American air power. He emphasizes that the fight should be for the Iraqis to win and notes that it is resentment of foreign intervention in the region that has fueled movements like ISIS to begin with. On the status of the ongoing nuclear negotiations, Zarif insists that Iran is prepared to agree to certain assurances that their nuclear program be used only for peaceful purposes and suggests that the ultimate stumbling block may be the reluctance of Congress to repeal economic sanctions.

India continues to deny racism. Today, a Union Minister exposed his disregard for humanity by missing out on an opportunity to weigh in on the debate on the side of the African community. In fact the Union Minister for law shocked by pandering to his domestic constituency by parochially chastising all foreigners, read as blacks, in his constituency for their intolerable criminality.
This type of labelling not only ends up validating the kind of racist hooliganism on view five nights ago but also alienates the Black community in India. This is already happening. Listen to this agonised voice from the African community in India.

Julian Assange has accused Britain’s foreign secretary, Philip Hammond, of insulting the United Nations in his response to a panel finding that Assange’s circumstances amount to “arbitrary detention”.
Hammond called the panel’s finding “ridiculous” and said the WikiLeaks founder was a “fugitive from justice”. Assange, who fled to the Ecquadorian embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden to face allegations of rape and sexual assault, said the remarks were “beneath the stature that a foreign minister should express in this situation”.
Assange said of the panel’s finding: “This is the end of the road for the legal arguments that have been put forward by Sweden and the UK.”
As anticipated, the finding by the Geneva-based UN panel criticised legal action against Assange by the UK and Sweden and blamed them for preventing him from leaving the Ecuadorian embassy in Knightsbridge

Italy’s Foreign Minister has confirmed Rome will collaborate with Cairo in an investigation into the death of twenty-eight-year-old student Giulio Regeni.
His half-naked body was found at the side of a road on the outskirts of Cairo. Cigarette burns, cuts and other signs of torture suggesting a ‘slow death’ were evident on his body, a senior Egyptian prosecutor said.
This appears to contradict the findings of a senior Egyptian investigator who has been quoted ruling out foul play in relation to the death, suggesting instead he may have been involved in a road accident.
Regeni disappeared on January 25, 2016, the date of the fifth anniversary of the uprising which ended Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule.
Italian media reports the student was collaborating with workers’ movements and independent trade unions in Cairo and had contacts with the Egyptian opposition. He is said to have been sending articles under a pseudonym to Italy’s self-styled Communist newspaper Il Manifesto. An Italian journalist told the press Regeni had been afraid to sign his real name.
Italian authorities are reported to be pushing for his remains to be returned to Italy as soon as possible.
The Egyptian ambassador has been summoned to Italy’s foreign ministry in Rome. It says it expects “maximum collaboration at all levels, in light of the exceptional gravity of what happened.”

Meanwhile, a flurry of diplomacy in and around the Korean peninsula...
Seoul's Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se met with four foreign envoys in Seoul Friday,... to discuss appropriate measures against Pyongyang for its recent provocations.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Kwon Soa reports... the focal point there - tougher sanctions
North Korea's so-called "byeongjin line",... its ambitions of developing nuclear weapons and its economy simultaneously,… will never succeed.
That's the consensus of Seoul's Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and ambassadors to South Korea from the U.S., Japan, Australia and the EU….as they gathered at Seoul's Foreign Ministry Friday to discuss ways to deal with North Korea's nuclear test last month,...
...as well as its most recent announcement of a satellite launch,... widely believed to be ruse for a missile test.
They vowed the strongest sanctions to date.
"In regards to additional sanctions from each country,... Minister Yun and the ambassadors assessed all related fields including weapons of mass destruction and decided on multi-dimensional and multi-level sanction measures."
, .")
The most powerful measure is known to be the one discussed at the UN Security Council,... still waiting to be adopted.
"After Pyongyang's third nuclear test, China was very cooperative and quick to vote in favor of a new resolution. But it's taking longer this time,... as Beijing and Washington are struggling to see eye to eye."
This as the U.S. is seeking much stronger sanctions than China is willing to approve.
According to an official at Seoul's Foreign Ministry,… there are currently a number of possible scenarios regarding the content of the new resolution,... all dependent upon if and when North Korea launches a rocket.
"The official says if Pyongyang does conduct a missile test,… a supplementary revision of the UN resolution against the North’s nuke test would be a more likely option than drafting a totally new one,… which seems to indicate significant progress towards the adoption of new sanctions.

China's top nuclear envoy has warned North Korea not to further escalate tensions in the Korean Peninsula as Pyongyang prepares for a satellite launch. Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is in London for the Syria donors conference, said Beijing had dispatched its special envoy Wu Dawei to North Korea to deal with what he described as "a serious situation".
While China is North Korea's biggest ally, it has been angered following Pyongyang's claim that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb in January. The North sparked further alarm in the region after it told UN agencies that it intended to launch a satellite between 8 and 25 February, with observers warning that it was cover for a long-range ballistic missile test.

Western sanctions will “never” cause economic meltdown for Russia, Moscow’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told FRANCE 24 in an exclusive interview on Monday.
“Russia will not only survive but will come out much stronger,” he said, brushing aside concerns about the country's crisis-hit economy. “We have been in much worse situations in our history and every time we have got out of our fix much stronger.”
Lavrov pulled no punches over his contempt for Western-imposed sanctions, levied against Russia for its alleged meddling in a pro-Moscow insurgency in eastern Ukraine following the ouster of the pro-Kremlin president in February.
He saved his most scathing comments for the EU: “Of course sanctions hurt, but I don’t believe the sanctions will help the European Union. The United States ordered the EU to impose sanctions and frankly we have overestimated the independence of the European Union [from the US].”

The migration crisis in Europe has reinvigorated the integration debate, especially in predominantly mono-ethnic Christian societies. And though most recognize the need to take in refugees, many fear that they will stress the fabric of their societies and stretch their country's resources to breaking point. Can European countries find a balance between humanitarian needs and social pressures, and how much should the EU's role in creating those migration flows factor into its decision-making? Oksana is joined by Kristiina Ojuland, the former Foreign Minister of Estonia, to examine these issues.

Please join us for a timely discussion with German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier on the importance of transatlantic unity during a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty. From the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and the rise of the Islamic State to the intensification of negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, transatlantic policy unity has been indispensable but cannot be taken for granted. As these international challenges multiply and intensify in the coming weeks and months, the United States and Europe must overcome their own domestic political and economic challenges to take decisive action as the international legal order comes under increasing strain. How will U.S. and German foreign and security policies adapt to this complex security environment? Will transatlantic unity be maintained and renewed or will transatlantic divisions and differences be exacerbated? Will the U.S. return to its traditional role as an engaged European power or will it support greater European leadership in Europe in order to prioritize its policy interests in Asia and the Middle East?

Ukraine and the world are still reeling from last week's downing of Flight MH17. The despicable act may prove to be a tipping point in the crisis as it has further exposed Russia's role in the destabilization of Ukraine and has sparked international outrage.
Join the Atlantic Council on July 29th at 1p.m. as we discuss the current crisis with Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Pavlo Klimkin who will be in Washington for emergency consultations with Secretary Kerry and Capitol Hill. Minister Klimkin will offer his perspective on recent developments and how to further strengthen the transatlantic response to support Ukraine and deter further aggression.
Pavlo Klimkin was appointed Ukraine's Foreign Minister in June 2014. Atlantic Council
He has previously served as Ukraine's ambassador Germany (2012-2014), director of the Foreign Ministry's European Union department (2008-2010), as well as deputy foreign minister (2010-2012) during which time he played a key role in negotiating the association and free trade agreements with the European Union.
