Ilulissat, formerly Jakobshavn or Jacobshaven, is a town in the Qaasuitsup municipality in western Greenland, located approximately 350 km (220 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. With the population of 4,541 as of 2013, it is the third-largest city in Greenland, after Nuuk and Sisimiut. The city is home to almost as many sled-dogs.
In direct translation, Ilulissat is the Kalaallisut word for "Icebergs". The nearby Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has made Ilulissat the most popular tourist destination in Greenland. Tourism is now the town's principal industry. The city neighbours the Ilulissat Icefjord, where there are enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. These white giants are a source of astonishment for both residents and visitors, when the gaze drifts to the wide Disco Bay and when you walk close to the fjord.
The town was established as a trading post by Jacob Severin's company in 1741 and was named in his honor.
Ilulissat Icefjord (Greenlandic: Ilulissat Kangerlua) is a fjord in western Greenland. Ilulissat Icefjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
It runs west 40 km (25 mi) from the Greenland ice sheet to Disko Bay just south of Ilulissat town. At its eastern end is the Jakobshavn Isbræ glacier (Greenlandic: Sermeq Kujalleq), the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. The glacier flows at a rate of 20–35 m (66–115 ft) per day, resulting in around 20 billion tonnes of icebergs calved off and passing out of the fjord every year. Icebergs breaking from the glacier are often so large (up to a kilometer (3,300 ft) in height) that they are too tall to float down the fjord and lie stuck on the bottom of its shallower areas, sometimes for years, until they are broken up by the force of the glacier and icebergs further up the fjord. On breaking up the icebergs emerge into the open sea and initially travel north with ocean currents before turning south and running into the Atlantic Ocean. Larger icebergs typically do not melt until they reach 40-45 degrees north (further south than the United Kingdom and level with New York City).
Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat [kaˈlaːɬit ˈnunaːt]; Danish: Grønland [ˈɡ̊ʁɶnˌlanˀ]) is an autonomous country within the Danish Realm, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland) for more than a millennium. In 2008, the people of Greenland passed a referendum supporting greater autonomy; 75% of votes cast were in favour. Greenland is the world's largest island, over three-quarters of which is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside of Antarctica. With a population of about 56,480 (2013), it is the least densely populated country in the world.
Greenland has been inhabited off and on for at least the last 4,500 years by Arctic peoples whose forebears migrated there from what is now Canada.Norsemen settled the uninhabited southern part of Greenland beginning in the 10th century, and Inuit peoples arrived in the 13th century. The Norse colonies disappeared in the late 15th century. In the early 18th century, Scandinavia and Greenland came back into contact with each other, and Denmark-Norway affirmed sovereignty over the island.
Ilulissat is situated in Disko Bay at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord which was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. There are three designated hiking trails of varying duration and difficulty in the Illulisat Icefjord (Ilulissat Kangerlua) each providing fabulous opportunities to hike along the edge of the fjord and get stupendous views of a massive number of icebergs that have calved from the most active glacier in the world: Sermeq Kujalleq. We followed the blue route that takes you along a boardwalk past the old settlement of Semermuit and then follows the bare rocky coast above the fjord. We then joined the red route that took us back to the beginning of the boardwalk, which takes about a couple of hours. From here it's an easy 20 minutes walk back into the town, maki...

Iceberg breaking up in the Ilulissat icefjord, close to an archaeological site called Sermermiut. **A quick note - some of the external links to this video have mixed information. To be more precise, this is a large iceberg breaking up, which had already calved from the icecap. The large ones often collect at the end of the fjord, where it is a bit shallower. The NASA image at the end of the video shows this a bit more clearly** For more information about the Ilulissat Icefjord: http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/details.cgi?aid=3806 http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1149 For any licensing requests please contact licensing@break.com

Spectacular scenes from the Ilulissat ice fjord and the Greenland ice cap. These images were filmed during the 2006 Climate Change College, during which 6 students from the UK and the Netherlands ventured into the arctic wilderness to be trained as climate change ambassadors. Based on the experiences and knowledge gathered on several locations in Greenland, they launched various initiatives raising public awareness around the topic of climate change. In the future we will feature more stories from the Climate Change College. You can read more about the project on www.climatechangecollege.org. I recently returned from a trip to Greenland (Aug 2010) The place I visited is the tourist capital of Greenland, Ilulissat. It is famous for Jokobhsvnd - a glacier that produces 10% of world's icebergs. It's an awesome place to visit if you want to see glaciers and icebergs. A number of tours are offered which I took over one week that I spent there. This video is from the harbor activity of Ilulissat. These are some of the videos from that trip.
Short video slide show describing when the best time to visit this city based on weather and climate. Some photos courtesy of Wikimedia Commons and others purchased from www.canstockphoto.com.
Woah-oh-oh-oh
It's always a good time
Woah-oh-oh-oh
It's always a good time
Woke up on the right side of the bed
What's up with this Prince song inside my head?
Hands up if you're down to get down tonight
Cuz it's always a good time.
Slept in all my clothes like I didn't care
Hopped into a cab, take me anywhere
I'm in if you're down to get down tonight
Cuz it's always a good time
Good morning and good night
I'll wake up at twilight
It's gonna be alright
We don't even have to try
It's always a good time
Woah-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh
It's always a good time
Woah-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh
We don't even have to try, it's always a good time.
Freaked out dropped my phone in the pool again
Checked out of my room hit the ATM
Let's hang out if you're down to get down tonight
Cuz it's always a good time
Good morning and good night
I'll wake up at twilight
It's gonna be alright we don't even have to try
It's always a good time.
