Guatemala (i/ˌɡwɑːtᵻˈmɑːləˌ ɡwæ-ˌ ɡɑː-/ GWAH-tə-MAH-lə, GWAT-ə-MAH-lə or GAH-tə-MAH-lə; Spanish: [gwateˈmala]), officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, Honduras to the east and El Salvador to the southeast. With an estimated population of around 15.8 million, it is the most populous state in Central America. A representative democracy, Guatemala's capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.
The territory of modern Guatemala once formed the core of the Mayan civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica. Most of the country was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, becoming part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 as part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved in 1841.
Adventure travel is a type of tourism, involving exploration or travel with perceived (and possibly actual) risk, and potentially requiring specialized skills and physical exertion. Adventure tourism has grown in recent decades, as tourists seek different kinds of vacations, but measurement of market size and growth is hampered by the lack of a clear operational definition. According to the U.S. based Adventure Travel Trade Association, adventure travel may be any tourist activity that includes two of the following three components: a physical activity, a cultural exchange or interaction and engagement with nature.
Adventure tourists may be motivated to achieve mental states characterized as rush or flow, resulting from stepping outside of their comfort zone. This may be from experiencing culture shock or through the performance of acts, that require significant effort and involve some degree of risk (real or perceived) and/or physical danger (See extreme sports). This may include activities such as mountaineering, trekking, bungee jumping, mountain biking, canoeing, rafting, kayaking, zip-lining, paragliding, sandboarding, caving and rock climbing. Some obscure forms of adventure travel include disaster and ghetto tourism. Other rising forms of adventure travel include social and jungle tourism.
Guatemala Adventure Travel: Everyone who arrives at Guatemala leaves better, more complete. With an adventure that wasn't expected. That is why in Guatemala we would like to show you something more than lakes and volcanoes, more than Mayan cities and more than towns full of color. Guatemala is still a developing nation, a young democracy with a turbulent and bloody history that's beset by deep-rooted inequalities. And yet, despite alarming levels of poverty and unemployment, most Guatemalans are extraordinarily courteous and helpful to travellers, and only too eager to help you catch the right bus or practise your Spanish. It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the country's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala such a compellin...

Here it is! I'm so thrilled to release this Guatemala Travel Guide, and share Albion Fit's top places (& secrets) to visit! This trip was not only an adventure, but so incredibly inspiring. To be there alongside the owners of Albion Fit (who are an absolute HOOT), and see where so much of their inspiration comes from was seriously so cool. I'm convinced that Guatemala is one of the worlds best kept secrets with it's endless beauty, and welcoming culture. We had the pleasure of meeting the talented Albion Fit team, who make the visions become a reality, and to be honest, it was one of my highlights of the trip! To see the process and hard work that goes into each swimsuit and piece of apparel we had been wearing, was mind blowing. Everything was cut and sewn with such precision and care. If...

I called this "Where Adventure Begins" because it is the literal truth - this is where most people jump off from to visit the rest of Guatemala. From here, you can get shuttles to literally anywhere in the country, do volcano hikes, etc. I loved Antigua, Guatemala, for many reasons. It had all the modern necessities and comforts you want right before you go off on a huge adventure, but it also instantly felt like a Central American country. Women in traditional dress everywhere, crazy markets where the locals shop. Theres a reason why we began AND ended here. Check out my top five tips below! - Nathalie (All videos filmed, written, narrated, and edited by yours truly!) TOP FIVE TIPS 1. Skip Guatemala City altogether. It is as gross as they say. And yes you have to fly into Guatemala City...

In this Guatemala and Antigua travel video guide, I head down to Guatemala and explore scenic Antigua, hike Volcano Pacaya, take a road trip to Lake Atitlan (and ride a horse along its banks), then head north to Tikal, home to the capital of the once mighty Mayan Empire, where I climb the many temples that have been discovered at the site. * The host, Matt Stabile, of this video is the founder and editor-in-chief of the travel site http://www.TheExpeditioner.com. He also served as Director, Editor and Foley Artist for this production.
Guatemala Travel Video Guide - Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites. Spanning a mountainous slice of Central America immediately south of Mexico, Guatemala is loaded with incredible natural, historical and cultural appeal. As the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya, the country is in many ways defined by the legacy of this early civilization. Their rainforest cities were abandoned centuries ago, but Maya people continue to thrive in the Guatemalan highlands, where traditions and religious rituals, mingled with Catholic practices, endure to form the richest and most distinctive indigeno...

Ann and I have decided to brave the Guatemalan jungle. Ok, not exactly. We embark on a fairly typical vacation path for tourists. We fly into the Guatemala city airport and then take a shuttle bus directly to Antigua. From there we climb a volcano before heading to Lake Atitlan to visit 5 little towns, reachable only by boat. Enjoy!
