Travel Guide to Antigua/Guatemala
In this Guatemala and Antigua travel video guide, I head down to Guatemala and explore scenic Antigua, hike Volcano Pacaya, take a road trip to Lake Atitlan (and ride a horse along its banks), then head north to Tikal, home to the capital of the once mighty Mayan Empire, where I climb the many temples that have been discovered at the site.

Travel Guatemala || Antigua: Where Adventure Begins
I called this "Where Adventure Begins" because it is the literal truth - this is where most people jump off from to visit the rest of Guatemala. It had all the modern necessities and comforts you want right before you go off on a huge adventure, but it also ins

I called this "Where Adventure Begins" because it is the literal truth - this is where most people jump off from to visit the rest of Guatemala. From here, you can get shuttles to literally anywhere in the country, do volcano hikes, etc. I loved Antigua, Guatemala, for many reasons. It had all the modern necessities and comforts you want right before you go off on a huge adventure, but it also instantly felt like a Central American country. Women in traditional dress everywhere, crazy markets where the locals shop. Theres a reason why we began AND ended here. Check out my top five tips below! - Nathalie
TOP FIVE TIPS
1. Skip Guatemala City altogether. It is as gross as they say. And yes you have to fly into Guatemala City, but take a taxi right from the airport. You can either flag one down on the street or hire one through the travel desks inside the airport. Either way, it should be about $30-35. Trrruuuust me on this one.
2. We stayed at two hotels, http://posadadonvalentino.com/ and http://casarusticagt.com/. Both were fine choices, but for different reasons. Casa Rustica was more expensive and the rooms were crazy small, but it was one block away from the main square. Don Valentino was much more modest and several blocks from the main square, but about half the cost of Rustica. Keep that in mind when booking - the closer you get to the main square, the more expensive the rooms get. Antigua is FULL of decent, low-budget hotels, so you shouldn't have a problem finding one.
3. Book your excursions well in advance, especially if you are visiting during high season. Volcano hikes, shuttles to other towns - they all fill up crazy fast, and you can't really wing this part (Believe me, we tried to book stuff last-minute, but failed almost every time. Yay.) Book through your hotel for ease, or one of the travel agencies in town. Everything in Guatemala runs through travel agencies.
4. Did you SEE those markets in the video? No, but really, did you SEE THAT? You simply cannot miss the markets. There are lots of them, so ask your hotel where they are and what days they are on. I'll be honest, there are bigger and better markets than Antigua's but if you are new to Guatemala, this is the peeerrrrfect introduction into Guatemalan market culture. They. Are. So. Fun. And yes - go ahead and buy the weird fruits you've never seen before, including that strange sweet potato fruit thing whose name escapes me.
5. In addition to the local markets, there is a big, well-stocked American style grocery store two doors down from Posada Don Valentino - go there to stock up! We got peanut butter and jelly and bread and fruits and all sorts of snacks for the rest of our trip.

Day by Day Itinerary
Small Groups: Never more than 10-16 travelers—guaranteed!
Travel to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize to delve into the legacies of the ancient Mayan civilization. More than 3,000 years ago this sophisticated culture emerged from the humid rain forests, flourished for centuries, and then vanished. In that time, the Mayans created a complex writing system, devised a calendar equivalent to our own, introduced the concept of zero in mathematics, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and built the tallest structures in the western hemisphere—all while Paris was just a sleepy village. Today, their ghostly remnants are scattered across Central America in an ancient, 1,500-mile-long trade ring known as La Ruta Maya. From ruins to rituals to rural villages, we'll trace the footsteps of the enigmatic Mayan culture as only OAT can—in our trademark small groups. Along the way, we'll meet modern-day descendants preserving their Mayan heritage with jade carvings, colorful weavings, and warm hospitality. Join us as we travel back in time to explore the Route of the Maya.

Day 5: Tikal
Day 6: Flores (Relaxing)
Day 7: Bus ride to Guatemala City , Antigua
Day 8: Antigua, Fly out from Guatemala City
Crossing into Guatemala from Belize by land surely gave me a true backpacking experience I will never forget and will remember for future overland backpacking adventures to come. While Belize is a little more tourist friendly and expensive, Guatemala is far more of an adventurous backpackers, cheap travel destination. Crossing the border was a little intimidating with money exchangers surrounding you and transportation guides trying to scoop you in there ride not to forget having to speak Spanish. My stepfather and I hopped on a bus across Petén to the little island of Flores to a hostel that overlooked the island and beyond. We spent one whole day hiking and walking around the Mayan city of Tikal where we saw monkeys, tall thick jungle trees, and amazingly built Mayan temples.
Another day we spend the whole day on the island of Flores in a cozy hotel along the western end of Flores island overlooking Petén Itza with beautiful views of the sunset. On this island, we felt the history of both the ancient civilization that once stood there as well as the current historical spanish city that sits there today. We not only encountered friendly Guatemalans, and cobble stoned streets, but found a $3 meal that included 1 tortilla, 2 small burritos, and one Gallo (beer). AMAZING!
We then took a 9 hour overnight luxury bus with a front seat overhead view of the road from Flores to Guatemala City higher up in the mountains to quickly take a cab to the old colonial capital of Antigua. This is the same bus one could use to Get from Guatemala city to Flores for Tikal. Aside from more cobble stoned streets, colorful friendly people, and pastel colored building, the view of two volcanoes was enough to grab my attention throughout the whole time in the little city. I fulfilled my desire standing atop a hill overlooking the city and volcano just like I had seen in pictures previously. Next morning we spent some time in the square taking pictures of churches, fountains, and beautiful architecture before our venture back home to the states.
Despite the negativity one may here about Guatemala, give it a chance, go see it, and you will return with great memories that you will never forget. Guatemala is filled with a beautiful mixture of spanish and mayan culture, beautiful beaches, volcanoes, ruins, lakes, and so much more. I not only left Guatemala with a good backpacking and travel experience, but it helped me evolve and see what traveling truly means to me and how I will continue to persevere and live the travel life that I desire.
Many years ago, I sat in a college classroom glancing at pictures of travel, two years ago I started, last year I left the country for the first time, this trip, I backpacked for the first time. Like all my videos, they represent me as I put my heart into all of my footage. I not only enjoy my time and explore but I hope to give others the opportunity to see how things are done beyond the travel guides and books. This is travel in the eyes of Anthony Perez! Hope you enjoy and happy travels!

Guatemala City Travel Guide: Guatemala City is located in the department (territorial division) of Guatemala, and it's the capital of the country. All the main highways start at Kilómetro 0, located inside Palacio Nacional de la Cultura (National Palace), in Centro Histórico (Historic Center).
Guatemala City became the capital after Antigua Guatemala had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. With a population of around 3 million people, Guatemala City is the largest and most modern city in Guatemala. It can be interesting to visit "Guate," as it is also called by the locals. Guatemala City has attractions and restaurants, often with few tourists. Sunday evenings' gatherings of hundreds of locals at the main plaza is certainly an unforgettable experience.
It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the city's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala City such a compelling place for travellers.

Guatemala Travel Video Guide - Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites.
Spanning a mountainous slice of Central America immediately south of Mexico, Guatemala is loaded with incredible natural, historical and cultural appeal. As the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya, the country is in many ways defined by the legacy of this early civilization. Their rainforest cities were abandoned centuries ago, but Maya people continue to thrive in the Guatemalan highlands, where traditions and religious rituals, mingled with Catholic practices, endure to form the richest and most distinctive indigenous identity in the hemisphere.
Guatemala today is very much a synthesis of Maya and colonial traditions, fused with the omnipresent influences of twenty-first century Latin and North American culture. Baroque churches dating back to the Spanish Conquest coexist with pagan temples that have been sites of worship for millennia. Highland street markets prosper alongside vast glitzy shopping malls, and pre-Columbian festival dances are performed by teenage hip-hop fans.

Guatemala Adventure Travel: Everyone who arrives at Guatemala leaves better, more complete. With an adventure that wasn't expected. That is why in Guatemala we would like to show you something more than lakes and volcanoes, more than Mayan cities and more than towns full of color.
Guatemala is still a developing nation, a young democracy with a turbulent and bloody history that's beset by deep-rooted inequalities. And yet, despite alarming levels of poverty and unemployment, most Guatemalans are extraordinarily courteous and helpful to travellers, and only too eager to help you catch the right bus or practise your Spanish.

Santo Tomás de Castilla, also known as Matías de Gálvez is a port city in the Izabal Department, Guatemala.
Seaport
===========
The seaport of the city was built in 1976, after an earthquake had severely damaged the port of Puerto Barrios. Today it is among the busiest in Central America and currently expanding. The port is located next to a free trade zone, the Zona de Libre Industria y Comercio Santo Tomás de Castilla, called Zolic. The port currently employs 2,100 workers. In 2004, 4.56 million tons of trading goods went through the port from 1,372 ships.
Cruise industry
===========
In 2004, a cruise ship terminal was completed and Santo Tomás de Castilla started receiving cruise ships. The cruise ship terminal has been a tremendous boost for the Guatemalan tourism industry. Four cruise ships a month, carrying 1,500 passengers each, make a stop here. Cruise ship passengers visit Guatemala chiefly for its Mayan culture, which sites are located throughout the country. Puerto Barrios Airport is being refurbished in order to handle small planes to transport ship passengers for day trips to Tikal or other places in Guatemala. Nearby attractions include Rio Dulce, Lake Izabal, the towns of Puerto Barrios, Livingston and San Felipe Castle, and the Mayan ruins of Quirigua.
