Welle Welle Welle… it’s a German indie music night!

October 27, 2010

It may not be often that you get a hankering for some Oompah … or for that matter a Falco fix…  but if you do have those moments where you want to get your lederhosen on – this is the night for you.  I personally have a weakness for Neue Deutsche Welle, and will be attending this night mit gusto (and bratwurst)…

In the words of the organisers of Schuss In Schwarze:

It’s a great night of tunes and dancing! Everything from Kraut rock, to Ska, Powerpop, Reggae, Punk, Neue Deutsche Welle, 60s Beat, Mod and plenty of the newest music from the German Speaking World! Drink, dance, be merry! Enjoy the best Gluehwein this side of the Yarra!

Schuss in Schwarze has been going for over a year now, and happens monthly at Willow Bar, 222 High Strasse, Northcote.

Join their Facebook Group to see upcoming dates as they’re announced…

and don’t forget – no matter what the weather – to say YES to the Gluhwein..

Metal Mayhem – underground metal store moves to Northcote

November 1, 2008

For those of you who like a chop and a lick and a flying v salute… Metal Mayhem for years has stocked a reasonably good range of headbangers’ delights on vinyl and CD, and has also been one of the mainstay ticket outlets for Heavy Metal gigs in Melbourne.

In a surprise move, literally as well as figuratively, Metal Mayhem has now left the city squall and descended upon the – hopefully – droves of Metal minions in Northcote on High Street.  Realistically, we deduce that high rents has kicked the Metal store out of the city limits and out to The New Windsor (Northcote), and wish them luck at such a less central location.  Apparently, they do mail order though, which might save some Metal fans who find Northcote a difficult trek.

Here’s the info from the Metal Mayhem myspace:

As many of you are now aware, Metal Mayhem is no longer located in the Banana Alley Vaults on Flinders St. Our new address, as of Sep 29 2008 is 459 High St Northcote. This address is between Northcote Station and Croxton Station if you’re travelling by train. There is also free off street parking along High St and free 2 hour parking at Northcote Plaza. The tram (Number 86, the RMIT/Bundoora Line) also runs right past the store.

We’ll be offerering a reward card upon purchase of new cds, as well as student discounts. We are also now stocks used cds etc as well as our comprehensive range of merchandise.

Don’t forget to check out the new Ilium album ‘Vespertilion’. Anyone that is a fan of ultra epic melodic traditional metal with power/progressive elements will love this. A great release from a local act and it features Lord Tim (ex Dungeon) on vocals. An absolute must, so support the local scene!

Finally, Jason Hodges the main person from Ilium and author, has a special going to Metal Mayhem customers. Anyone responding to this email will be able to get the special offer of both Ilium CDs, a signed copy of his book ‘Black Abyss’ with a personalised message and an Ilium T-shirt for $110 including postage. Jason’s email is metalion@tpg.com.au

Movie Reel – 69 – 71 High Street, Northcote

June 25, 2008

The Movie Reel is a godsend to the northern suburbs – no matter which pantheon you might believe in, you will be burning the most expensive incense or raising your hands in fervent thanks after a visit to this cult emporium.  The Movie Reel is to the ‘burbs what ACMI is to the city: a rental library with an emphasis on cult, arthouse and foreign films. So if you’ve showed up at the Westgarth cinema only to find that your session is sold out or that they’re only showing a Macaulay Culkin retrospective that week: The Movie Reel will provide a sweet assuagement of your cult thirst.

The selection is strong, which is the upside. Their shelves are well stocked with everything from serious arthouse to horror schlock.

The downside is that their website is little short of neanderthal, meaning you really do have to take my recommendation and drop by and browse their catalogue in order to verify their awesomeness.

Opening hours:

Sunday to Wednesday
:
11.00am to 10.00pm
Thursday to Saturday
:
11.00am to 11.00pm
Telephone: (03) 9486 8866
