The Magic Lantern – a cache of curiousities on Brunswick St, Fitzroy
February 25, 2011One of the most remarkable new establishments I’ve had the pleasure of setting both feet inside, the marvels of Melbourne’s Wunderkammer not withstanding, is The Magic Lantern.
Wall to wall oddities related to tricks and treats of an older age: magic, optical illusions, cardboard theatres, puppets – imagine a time before TV, before DVDs, before gaming, where amusement was only to be found in the head, on paper and in actions… these are the imaginative tools used to build a sense of the surreal, the infinite, the stuff of dreams. A magic lantern was itself a pre-20th century optical trick, the first projector, perhaps it could be said, so that pretty much infers the interest and scope of this store.
The Magic Lantern is replete with such weapons against a rainy day and a drab room, so grab some candle-lamps, don a frilly frock and take your imagination away with fairies, gypsies, devils, conjurers and the wonders of the play….

Hawthorn art gallery/shop/curio haven Kustom Lane are having an Art sale this weekend. That seems as good a reason as any to profile this mighty unique location, which brings together hotrods, tikis, lounge and gorelesque art, 50s horror schlock and more under one roof. Kustom Lane is a paen to all things kitschtastic, with an emphasis on rockabilly, psychobilly, horror and burlesque motifs.
They display work by local artists centred around these themes, and sell tikis, have gigs and hotrod related exhibitions… and much more.

Dine Out and Help out… a Christmas initiative with the blessings of Stephen Fry

Between now and Christmas 2010 Street Smart Australia are running a ‘Dine Out, Help Out’ campaign with hundreds of participating restaurants around Australia. A small donation added on to your bill goes directly to projects to help combat homelessness in Australia, constructively.
It’s an easy way to spread some Christmas cheer to those least likely to have much of their own.
At the very least, check out the Streetsmart Australia website and see what you think of their campaigns and projects. We are living in a time when we can’t expect our Government to assist the poor, and certainly not to effectively address the social and economic issues that leave people homeless. As sad as that is. This is one way of looking at solutions, and worth at least your consideration if not your support this Christmas.

November 10, 2010Princess Pictures needs a volunteer crowd of fabulous people for the new ABC TV series Outland, to appear in crowd scenes of a Gay Pride event.
DATE: Friday 26 November 2010
PLACE: Catani Gardens between Beaconsfield Parade and Fitzroy Street, St Kilda tram 96 or 16
TIME: From 8 am (it’s an all day shoot and filming starts early) DRESS: Fabulous! But please NO recognisable science fiction costumes. You don’t need to dress up (or be gay) to come along, but you can be as awesome as you want.
BRING: Flags, banners and colourful stuff. As filming TV isn’t always as fun as watching TV, there will be some slow times when the fabulous crowd isn’t needed. So picnics, games and friends will make the non-filming times fun. You’ll also be able to do some star spotting and see how a TV show is made.
Outland is based on the only short film to play the Melbourne Queer Film Festival and the World Science Fiction Convention. It stars Christine Anu, Ben Gerrard , Paul Ireland, Adam Richard, Toby Truslove, is written by John Richards (Boxcutters), directed by Kevin Carlin (Newstopia, BoyTown, The Extra) and produced by Princess Pictures (Summer Heights High, We Can Be Heroes, John Safran’s Race Relations, I Love You Too). Better late than never, is every fiend’s cry as they hunt for that last brain/victim/rat/virgin before the dawn. And so say I, bumping into the spooky Melbourne Horror Film Society so late in 2010’s shadow.
But there are still films to be seen at 1000 pound bend before the year is out, and a perfectly meritorious idea to get ghoulish in long spring nights. They have membership details at their website, and a programme of films for 2010.
