PROOF OF CONCEPT

The Proof of Concept series emerges out of Robin Fox’s practice spanning seven years as an audio-visual performance artist exploring the area of synaesthesia via electrical signal equivalence. These explorations focus on the conversion of sounding electricity into visual electricity using oscilloscopes and laser projectors to facilitate the visualisations. The use of both mediums requires that a single light source move with enough speed to create persistence of vision, allowing for the emergence of solid two- and three-dimensional correlates to the sound algorithms. In this series of photographs, sounding algorithms are visualised using laser light and captured using long exposure to allow for the light to trace across the recording medium. The result is a time-distilled snapshot of the sampling space. The photographs represent after-images, slices of time that contain these algorithms, which have their genesis in sound. Displayed in a linear sequence, the photographs are a silent witness to this process.

Liquid Architecture Sound Art Festival, July 2010

Liquid Architecture Festival is once more nearly upon us, with its usual diverse range of artists, spaces, media and performance.  This year, the focus seems to be on Australian artists, rather than importing a bunch of intriguing internationals, with just a smattering of imports including Japan’s KK Null.  The festival doesn’t suffer a whit from being more localised, though:  we have an astonishing amount of talent here in our own front, back and side yards.  What better way to get yourself acquainted with some of our most intriguing sonic ambassadors like Robin Fox, Snawklor, Matt Tierney and many more.

National Academy of Music 2010 Series

Sometimes you like a little trad in yuor music, right?  Real instruments made of wood and brass and stuff… and yet: you don’t want to sit with the nans at the Melbourne Pops… you still crave a bit of edge and a nod to contemporary notions of music and art.  Seems like the National Academy of Music is offering just the ticket… in fact a series of tickets with a whole season of oddities and experimenta in music, but with just a hint of classicism for those chinstroker moments.

This Saturday: International Independent Record Store Day

/culled from the Indie Initiative email list – a very worthy cause!!!!!  From this list, remember Heartland Records, Greville Records, Peril Underground, Polyester Records, Metal Mayhem:  but there’s also Missing Link, Hear Now Records, DMC Records, Liquorice Pie Records, Northside Records… plenty more too, just waiting to help you love music :D  Google maps can help if you need to find one near you!

 

 

It’s World Record Store Day on Saturday www.worldrecordstoreday.com .

Record stores are the heartbeat of music. Those indie stores that are left survive because they cater to their consumers needs. The proprietors and staff have the knowledge to steer people in the right direction, they help musicians get their product out and give joy when the have the music you want.

I have a bad vinyl habit that needs more records. This week I got Zaireeka (Flaming Lips) and a Superfunk compilation from Second Spin in Carlisle St, the new My Morning Jacket album (complete with CD) and a soul compilation at Greville Records and a DVD of The Prairie Home Companion from Record Paradise in Chapel Street.  Record Paradise in now run by Paul and Renee and is completely changed from Warrens Record Paradise. You can now find vinyl sorted into some sort of order. It’s still a crate diggers paradise, but they have added books and movies (helped by Paul Harris from 3RRR).

Warrens was run by possibly the unfriendliest and rudest proprietor ever. It’s next to the Police station at 100 Chapel Street (near Carlisle St).

If you’ve been there you know what I mean. But now it’s sweetness and light.

Basement Discs and Polyester will be having instore appearances.

Record store were and are a great source of knowledge. Support them on Saturday, but support them very week. It can be easier to go to a chain, but having some knowledgable discussion will be far more illuminating. You never know who you might meet. I met Nick Cave recently at Greville. He always supports local stores. In’t it time you did to.

Free – limited capacity. Pick up tickets at ACMI Box Office on the day to ensure entry.

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) will present an exciting fusion of sight and sound as part of Late Night Thursday’s program from April to June.

Synaesthesia is a program of free live performances exploring different forms of the moving image, including media art, newly interpreted live film scores and works that draw on sound and film archives. The program will feature intimate showcases from Mink Engine, Outpost Collective, Robin Fox, Abject Leader, the Ang Fang Quartet, Jean Poole with DJ CanCut, Gossip Pop, Paul Robertson and a live collaboration between Qua and Isobel Knowles, all live in Studio 1.

COR FUHLER (Holland)/OREN AMBARCHI/ROBBIE AVENAIM TRIO and ROBIN FOX’S MULTI LASER EXTRAVAGANZAMore than any other instrument, the piano has a sound, a history and a repertoire that can easily overwhelm a player’s individuality. How many times have you seen someone sit down and put his or her fingers to the keyboard only to hear a generic “piano” sound that turns the music into so much sonic whitewash? Dutchman Cor Fuhler seeks to take this classic instrument beyond our usual perceptions to another level entirely, specializing in sustained sounds thru the use of various string stimulators. Fuhler’s playing can evoke a gamelan ensemble, tone generators, percussion and strings with extensive use of electronics, such is the variety of his sounds. Tonight Fuhler will perform in trio with renowned Australian artists Oren Ambarchi & Robbie Avenaim.

Also appearing is Robin Fox in a rare multi-laser performance. A Fox laser show envelops the audience in synchronous sound and light information, the experience resembles a synaesthetic experience where what you hear is also what you see. The same electricity generated to move the speaker cones is sent simultaneously to high-speed motors that deflect the laser light on an x/y axis converting sonic vibration into light movement. Always mindblowing & not to be missed!!!
