Amid a wave of bloody clashes between protesters and the police, Haitian president Michel Martelly stepped down from office on Sunday, leaving the Caribbean nation with no successor.
On Saturday, with less than 24 hours before Martelly’s scheduled departure, Haiti’s parliament drafted an agreement allowing the election of an interim president for a four-month term. A presidential runoff to decide Martelly’s successor in December 2015 was postponed indefinitely due to allegations of fraud.

STORYLINE
On April 20th 2011 Michel Martelly, a Haitian popular singer known by the stage name "Sweet Micky," was officially declared the earthquake-devastated country's next president, election officials said.
On the same day that Haitian officials announced the final results, Martelly met US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as part of a three-day visit to Washington.
Martelly said that he spoke with Clinton about his three priorities: education, finding homes for people living in tents and restarting Haiti's agricultural sector.
Clinton said she welcomed Martelly as president.
A spokesman for Haiti's electoral commission, Pierre Thibault, said Martelly won the presidency with 67.57 percent of the vote, defeating rival candidate Mirlande Manigat.
The announcement ends a long, drawn-out election that began Nov. 28 and was marred by fraud and other irregularities, several days of rioting and numerous delays.
After election officials released preliminary results on April 6 showing that Martelly, 50, defeated his opponent with nearly 68 percent of the vote, Manigat said she wouldn't contest the results.
Since then, Martelly has spoken about the need for reconciliation in this bitterly divided nation as he's sought to put together a transition team.
Martelly, a master of Haiti's compas music before he became a presidential candidate, is scheduled to be inaugurated on May 14th.
As Haiti's newly elected president, Martelly faces enormous challenges.
He will be tasked with leading multi (b) billion dollar reconstruction efforts after a magnitude-7 earthquake last year claimed 300-thousand lives, housing hundreds of thousands of displaced quake survivors, and stemming a deadly cholera epidemic.
Election officials also released final results for legislative elections held at the same time, showing that the political party of outgoing President Rene Preval has a majority in the Senate.
This could prove to be another hurdle for Martelly, for Parliament must approve his pick for prime minister.
Haiti's difficult recovery from the earthquake and years of instability and poverty was underscored on Wednesday when 53 members of US Congress wrote to Clinton urging her to work with the Haitian government on providing rapid support for the displaced people lacking adequate shelter, water, sanitation and security.
Thirty-eight percent of resettlement camps still lack regular water supplies, their letter said, adding that the percentage had improved little since August.
Nearly a third of camps don't have toilets.
Where toilets are provided, each one is shared by an average of 273 people.

Haiti's President Michel Martelly spoke with AS/COA's Susan Segal on the sidelines of the opening of the 69th UN Assembly in New York. Martelly outlined his administration's approach to Haiti's recovery since the massive earthquake in 2010. He talked about framing the country's current challenges as opportunities for businesses to flourish. "Instead of looking for aid, we've spoken about trade," the president explained.
Martelly also said he is consulting different sectors in the country on the next national elections, scheduled for October of this year, and what the conclusion of the UN mission to Haiti means for the country. The president said recent talks with the Dominican Republic represent a positive opportunity to address historical issues affecting bilateral relations.

"Martelly has been heralded as a pioneer of a unique brand of compas music, a style of Haitian dance music sung predominantly in the Haitian Creole language. Originally, Compas, or Kompa, was the creation of Nemours Jean-Baptiste. Martelly, a keyboardist and the self-proclaimed "President of Compas," popularized a nouvelle génération, or "new generation" style, of smaller bands with few members that relied predominantly on synthesizers and electronic instruments to reproduce a fuller sound. Martelly's live performances and recordings are sometimes laced with physical humor and humorous sociopolitical commentaries and satires. Although he is the most recognized musician and public personality in Haiti, Martelly's performance style has sometimes ignited controversy throughout Haitian communities.
By 1988, Martelly's musical talent, charismatic persona, and his pattering style of compas had gained tremendous popularity at El Rancho Hotel and Casino and The Florville, another local venue. That year, he recorded his first single, Ooo La La, which became an instant hit, followed by "Konpas Foret des Pins" which was released in 1989, also a number hit from his debut album "Woule Woule". During the period of about 1988-2008 Martelly, using his stage name Sweet Micky, recorded fourteen studio albums and a number of live CDs. His music features compas music, slow meringue, troubadour, meringue carnival, raboday, etc.
In 1997, Martelly's crossover appeal to other musical genres was evident when hipop and compas music star, Wyclef Jean of The Fugees featured him on the title track for Jean's solo effort Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival featuring the Refugee Allstars. As Jean proclaims on 'The Carnival,' "Surprise - it's Sweet Micky, y'all!" Also in 1997, Martelly released an album containing one of his most celebrated hits, Pa Manyen ("Don't Touch"). The song is an adaptation of "Angola", composed by the renowned artist/composer/record producer Ramiro Mendes (of the Mendes Brothers), first recorded by Cesária Évora, the legendary Cape Verdean singer. Pa Manyen went on to be featured in various compilation albums, including the popular Putumayo Presents: French Caribbean in 2003. The song was also covered by Venezuelan singer, Soledad Bravo as "Canta, Canta Corazon" and by Jose Luiz Cortes of Cuba." - Wikipedia

"If we have really identified the MINUSTAH (United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti) as responsible (for the cholera outbreak) the question today should not be ''you got to leave.'' First of all the question should be ''help us solve the problem, you have the means, we don''t''."

"We are following closely the case, as I have asked the UN representative in Haiti to make sure that justice is done, and we are following the case. "In the past, everyone, including myself, has criticised the IHRC (Interim Haiti Recovery Commission) for being slow in the reconstruction process. STORYLINE
Haitian President Michel Martelly announced on Thursday he''ll return to the stage briefly in December for a concert he hopes will raise 10 (m) million US dollars for his nation''s schools.
The long-time performer and recording artist sang and played the piano for the media interviewing him, showing that he remains in touch with his artistic side.
But the 50-year-old acknowledged that it hasn''t been all fun since he was elected in the spring.
Martelly said assuming the presidency has caused him to change his mind about some things, including his past opinion that United Nations peacekeeping troops should leave the Caribbean nation of 10 (m) million.
The UN force was first established in Haiti in 1994 to help maintain order after political violence engulfed the country.
Protests calling for the departure of the force continue to erupt in Haiti, where many people remain angry over a cholera outbreak likely introduced by a battalion from Nepal.
The epidemic has killed more than 6,200 people since its outbreak nearly a year ago.
"The question today should not be ''you got to leave.'' First of all the question should be ''help us solve the problem, you have the means, we don''t''," Martelly said when asked about the role of the UN Mission in the cholera outbreak.
Protesters are also angry over the alleged sexual assault of an 18-year-old Haitian man by peacekeepers from Uruguay in the southwestern town of Port-Salut in July.
"We are following closely the case and I have asked the UN representative in Haiti to make sure that justice is done," Martelly said.
The Haitian president blamed "some people" and politicians he would not name for stirring up the protesters.
Martelly said much of his energy is now consumed by the ongoing reconstruction of the nation after last year''s devastating quake, and plans to move tens of thousands of people out of camps into permanent homes.
"In the past everyone, including myself, has criticised the IHRC (Interim Haiti Recovery Commission) for being slow in the reconstruction process but since I came in power this ''16X6 project'' is an example of what is happening," he said.
