Goddard IMA Commencement Speech by Alumni Mumia Abu-Jamal

This year's graduating class of the Individualized Master of Arts program at Goddard College, VT, proudly invited Mumia Abu-Jamal to be the keynote speaker of their commencement this past Sunday, August 10th 2008. It was a unanimous decision made by all of the graduates to invite Abu-Jamal, alumni of the college, to shed his wisdom and insight as a renowned journalist, freedom-fighter, and scholar. Mohammed Omer, former Vermont Guardian correspondent, assaulted by Israeli security forces

IPS reports award winning journalist Mohammed Omer, Rafah, was assaulted and abused by Israeli security forces at the Jordan-West Bank checkpoint Thursday. Omer was on his way home from a Netherlands trip sponsored by the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs and the Dutch Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Vermont Becomes Seventh "Sweatshop-Free" State

Brattleboro, Vermont— Today Vermont became the seventh “sweatfree” state in the United States when Governor Jim Douglas signed a sweatshop-free purchasing policy into law.

The Governor's signing ceremony was held at Brattleboro Union High School. Members of the student organization Child Labor Education and Action (CLEA) had initiated and led the campaign to pass the law.

VERMONT AFL-CIO CALLS ON WORKERS TO SUPPORT WEST COAST STRIKE AGAINST WAR

As the war in Iraq shifts into its sixth year, the executive board of the Vermont AFL-CIO, which represents thousands of workers in Vermont, has unanimously passed a historic resolution expressing their “unequivocal” support for the first US labor strike against the war in Iraq. Vermont union members will be in solidarity with of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU), which will seek to shutdown all west coast ports for a period of 24 hours on May 1st 2008. This will be the first US labor strike against the war in Iraq.
