For more than 25 years Carl Lehrburger has studied archaeological and sacred sites in North America, with a focus on ancient peoples in America before Columbus. He discussed his latest work revealing extensive evidence for pre-Columbian explorers in ancient America, such as Celtic relics. He personally explored some of the New England sites highlighted in Barry Fell's groundbreaking book America B.C., and became convinced that Celtic writing and relics, thousands of years old, were indeed genuine, and that migrations to America came over many different periods and waves. These migrations included both trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic visitors, and one of the biggest drivers of this ancient travel was the quest for gold and silver-- in the Eastern US copper mining took place, while gold and silver were mined on the West Coast, he said. The ancient Celts left evidence of their writing system in New England, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, as well as latter day Celts leaving inscriptions in West Virginia, he said.
One of the most important examples is the site called America's Stonehenge, located in southern New Hampshire, which he characterized as a large area of Celtic stone constructions, dating back 2,000 years. A town in Arizona also dates back to this era, he suggested, and was inhabited by a Roman colony, who left behind their historical record on lead plates. Lehrburger believes there's been a deliberate attempt to keep America's true archaeological history hidden from the public.

Gold artifacts from Costa Rica and Central America. Hummingbirds, humans, bats, crocodiles, jaguars, pigs, lizards and others are represented. Ancient trade routes facilitated the movement of gold and other goods between Mexico and South America. Crossing through Costa Rica, spawning a golden age. I highly recommend a visit to the Gold Museum, and the nearby Jade Museum as well. These are pictures I took during a trip in December 2014.

Of the around 2,000 indigenous languages thought to have been spoken in what is now Brazil during pre-Columbian times, only around 160 survive today.
Experts warn that as many of 40 percent of those remaining could be lost in the next few decades, as elders die off and young people get more and more access to Brazilian television, the Internet and mobile phones.
A programme spearheaded in part by the United Nations' cultural and educational agency UNESCO has aimed to give nearly three dozen threatened languages here a fighting chance.
"With every language that disappears, an entire memory, an entire culture disappears," recently said Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO while in Rio de Janeiro, promoting the programme which was also operated by the Rio de Janeiro Indian Museum and the federal government's FUNAI indigenous affairs agency.
Over the past nearly eight years, the programme has helped 35 tribes transcribe their languages, develop dictionaries and teaching tools for school children and document their rich oral traditions.
While Brazil's indigenous population was thought to have numbered between 3 to 5 million in pre-Columbian days, five centuries of disease, violence and grinding poverty have whittled their population down to under 1 million today, meaning that Brazil's original inhabitants now make up under 0.5 percent of this country of 200 million.
Their population is splintered into 305 tribes, some of which have dwindled to several dozen or even just a handful of members.
The recent World Indigenous Games in the central city of Palmas brought together indigenous people from all over the world.
Though some participants spoke their native languages, most were seen chatting with friends on smartphones and social media sites in Portuguese.

In the United States, Native Americans. and Canada. First Nations, are considered to be people whose pre-Columbian ancestors were indigenous to the lands within the nation's modern boundaries. These peoples were composed of numerous distinct tribes, bands, and ethnic groups, and many of these groups survive intact today as sovereign nations. The terms Native Americans use to refer to themselves vary regionally and generationally, with many older Native Americans self-identifying as "Indians" or "American Indians", while younger Native Americans often identify as "Indigenous". Which terms should be used to refer to Native Americans has at times been controversial. The term "Native American" has been adopted by major newspapers and some academic groups, but has not traditionally included Native Hawaiians or certain Alaskan Natives, such as Aleut, Yup'ik, or Inuit peoples. Indigenous American peoples from Canada are known as First Nations.
Since the end of the 15th century, the migration of Europeans to the Americas has led to centuries of exchange and adjustment between Old and New World societies. Most Native American groups had historically lived as hunter-gatherer societies and preserved their histories by oral traditions and artwork, which has resulted in the first written sources on the conflict being authored by Europeans.
At the time of first contact, the indigenous cultures were quite different from those of the proto-industrial and mostly Christian immigrants. Some of the Northeastern and Southwestern cultures in particular were matrilineal and operated on a more collective basis than the Europeans were familiar with. The majority of Indigenous American tribes maintained their hunting grounds and agricultural lands for use of the entire tribe. Europeans at that time had patriarchal cultures and had developed concepts of individual property rights with respect to land that were extremely different. The differences in cultures between the established Native Americans and immigrant Europeans, as well as shifting alliances among different nations in times of war, caused extensive political tension, ethnic violence, and social disruption. Even before the European settlement of what is now the United States, Native Americans suffered high fatalities from contact with European diseases spread throughout the Americas by the Spanish to which they had yet not acquired immunity. Smallpox epidemics are thought to have caused the greatest loss of life for indigenous populations, although estimates of the pre-Columbian population of what today constitutes the U.S. vary significantly, from 1 million to 18 million.
The indigenous peoples of the Americas are the pre-Columbian inhabitants of North and South America, and their descendants. Pueblos indígenas (indigenous peoples) is a common term in Spanish-speaking countries. Aborigen (aboriginal/native) is used in Argentina, whereas "Amerindian" is used in Quebec and The Guianas but not commonly in other countries. Indigenous peoples are commonly known in Canada as Aboriginal peoples, which include First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Indigenous peoples of the United States are commonly known as Native Americans or American Indians, and Alaska Natives.
According to the prevailing New World migration model, migrations of humans from Asia (in particular North Asia) to the Americas took place via Beringia, a land bridge which connected the two continents across what is now the Bering Strait. The majority of experts agree that the earliest migration via Beringia took place at least 13,500 years ago, with disputed evidence that people had migrated into the Americas much earlier, up to 40,000 years ago. These early Paleo-Indians spread throughout the Americas, diversifying into many hundreds of culturally distinct nations and tribes. According to the oral histories of many of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, they have been living there since their genesis, described by a wide range of creation myths.
Application of the term "Indian" originated with Christopher Columbus, who, in his search for Asia, thought that he had arrived in the East Indies. The Americas came to be known as the "West Indies", a name still used to refer to the islands of the Caribbean sea. This led to the names "Indies" and "Indian", which implied some kind of racial or cultural unity among the aboriginal peoples of the Americas. This unifying concept, codified in law, religion, and politics, was not originally accepted by indigenous peoples but has been embraced by many over the last two centuries. Even though the term "Indian" often does not include the Aleuts, Inuit, or Yupik peoples, these groups are considered indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Painter and printmaker Enrique Chagoya whose provocative works incorporate diverse symbolic elements from pre-Columbian mythology, Western religious iconography, and American popular culture, leads an artist’s talk in conjunction with his JSMA exhibition Adventures of Modernist Cannibals.
Painter and printmaker Enrique Chagoya describes his work as a “conceptual fusion of opposite cultural realities” and employs what he calls “reverse anthropology.” His provocative works incorporate diverse symbolic elements from pre-Columbian mythology, Western religious iconography, and American popular culture. Chagoya often appropriates the visual tropes of Western modernism in his works, just as the masters of Modern art cannibalized so-called primitive forms without properly contextualizing them.
This exhibition highlights some of Chagoya’s most fascinating pieces: artist’s books that take their form from pre-Columbian codices and combine chine-collé, letterpress, lithography, and woodcut printing techniques to create rich, multi-layered compositions. His contemporary codices illustrate an imagined world in which the European conquest of the New World failed and the normative culture of the Americas is based in indigenous ideology.
Enrique Chagoya: Adventures of Modernist Cannibals and its related programs are made possible by the generous support of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation, the University of Oregon Department of Art and the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies.

Traditionally, archaeologists have the vast Amazon region of South America to be a cultural backwater compared to the better-known civilizations that developed in the Americas. In recent years, the documentation of raised field agriculture, black earth, managed forests,

Traditionally, archaeologists have the vast Amazon region of South America to be a cultural backwater compared to the better-known civilizations that developed in the Americas. Scholars stress the limitations of tropical environments and lack of critical technological innovations to sustain civilizations. In recent years, the documentation of raised field agriculture, black earth, managed forests, hydraulic engineering, and large settlements in the Amazon has questioned traditional assumptions. Dr. Erickson, University of Pennsylvania, Department of Anthropology, has documented fascinating monumental earthworks called ring ditches or geoglyphs that encircle areas of several acres to nearly a square mile. Some earthworks are precisely constructed in geometric patterns that suggest a concern for landscape design, appearance, and aesthetics. Deep ditches imply that huge volumes of earth moved. Various hypotheses are presented for the functions of earthworks. The existence of earthworks of such magnitude and density throughout Western Amazonia shows the ability of native peoples to transform their landscapes at a massive scale. Sponsored by donors to the Shepard Krech III Lecture Fund and the Friends of the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology.

Stanislaw Ulam Lecture Series: Seeing the Future in Our Past: Why Archaeology Matters
While the great architectural, artistic, and intellectual achievements of Pre-Columbian Maya peoples continue to bedazzle us for their richness, an understanding of the arc of ancient Maya civilization has relevance to problems facing the world today. SFI President Jerry Sabloff focuses on lessons about sustainability and societal resilience gleaned from new evidence relating to the decline of many major cities in the southern Maya Lowlands in the ninth century CE. He also explores heritage education and tourism in today’s Maya world, among other topics.
