Sex, drugs, rock and roll: Pick your poison. Tangier used to be a place to freely engage in the hedonistic pleasures of your choice — all while not breaking the law or your budget. In the '40s and '50s, the coastal city became the light to which dozens of Western creatives (beat writers like William Burroughs, rock musicians like The Rolling Stones, and fashion designers like Yves Saint Laurent) flocked. As an international zone, Tangier lacked the rules and regulations that were constraining many artistic minds in the U.S., Europe, and Australia at the time. So, it attracted a colorful community.
Fast-forward 60 years, and some of those expats are still there. The reality they've created for themselves is not quite Moroccan, not quite Western; rather, it's an amalgamation of everything they love — which is about as indulgent as it gets. Tangier's combination of bright hues and fabrics, traditional patterns and craftsmanship, and international cultural influences makes it a tempting haven for people who want to reinvent themselves. Of course, that process of transformation raises questions about cultural appropriation versus appreciation (for example, many expats used to cut up sacred Moroccan textiles to use as guitar straps). Some of the outdated terminology and specious perceptions still prevalent at this cultural crossroads may well be at odds with many expats' self-proclaimed free-thinking. But, in Morocco, the fact remains: This magpie sensibility — or, on the flip side of the coin, exploitation — is easy to pursue. Watch as our host, Asha Leo, travels to Tangier to meet with the expats who've created a colorful, pastiched life on the tenets of experimentation, indulgence, and freedom.

wn.com/Tangier On The Line
Tangier is a popular Philadelphia-based American rock band active in the late 1980s and early 90s. The band released three albums with a few line-up changes having a sound somewhere in the middle of straight-up Hard rock to Blues and Southern rock, this all making them somewhat a mixture of Free meets Johnny Winter meets Whitesnake meets Lynyrd Skynyrd .
"On The Line" is for the 1989 album "Four Winds", actually one of the 2 hit singles of it along with "Southboubd Train"

Tangier Morocco. It´s a major city in northern Morocco with a population of approximately 948,000. It is located on the North African coast at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Spartel. It is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan Region and of the Tangier-Asilah prefecture of Morocco.
The history of Tangier is very rich, due to the historical presence of many civilizations and cultures starting from before the 5th century BCE. Between the period of being a strategic Berber town and then a Phoenician trading center to the independence era around the 1950s, Tangier was a refuge for many cultures. In 1923, Tangier was considered as having international status by foreign colonial powers, and became a destination for many European and American diplomats, spies, writers and businessmen.
The city is currently undergoing rapid development and modernization. Projects include new tourism projects along the bay, a modern business district called Tangier City Center, a new airport terminal and a new football stadium. Tangier's economy is also set to benefit greatly from the new Tanger-Med port.

Morocco is a North African country that has a coastline on both the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Gibraltar.

==================
At just a few hours from the main European cities, Morocco has everything to overwhelm you with the amazing colors, smells and sounds of Islamic Africa. Imagine bustling souqs and spice markets, stunning mosques, white-washed sea side towns and medieval city centres. With panoramic views varying from snow-covered peaks in the High Atlas to the endless sand dunes of the Sahara, no-one ever has to be bored in this beautiful country.
Movie-famous Casablanca might be the most famous of Moroccan cities and is home to the huge Hassan II mosque, the second largest mosque in the world with only the Grand Mosque of Mecca surpassing it. Many travellers quickly leave this vibrant and modernist metropolis on a search for a more traditional Moroccan experience, but admiring the impressive colonial architecture, Hispano-Moorish and art-deco outlook of the city centre is actually time well spent. Marrakesh, known as the "Red City" and probably the most prominent former imperial capital, will leave you with memories to cherish for life. Spend your days wandering through the lively souqs, admiring the old gates and defensive walls, see the Saadian Tombs, the remnants of the El Badi Palace and visit the Koutoubia Mosque with its 12th century minaret. However, when evening falls make sure to head back to Jamaa el-Fnaa, the largest square in Africa, as it fills up with steam-producing food stalls. Indulge in the bustling activity there, listen to Arabic story tellers, watch magicians and Chleuh dancers. Fez, once Morocco's capital, is another gorgeous imperial city. Get lost in its lovely labyrinth of narrow Medieval streets, enjoy its huge medina, see the beautiful city gates, the ancient University of Al-Karaouine and the Bou Inania Madrasa. Also, make sure to visit a traditional leather tanning factory. The city of Meknes is often called the "Versailles of Morocco" for its beauty. Its lovely Spanish-Moorish style centre is surrounded by tall city walls with impressive gates and you'll be able to see the 17th century blend of European and Islamic cultures even today.
For a more laid-back experience of city life, catch a sea breeze at Asilah or lovely Essaouira. The blue-washed town of Chefchaouen is an old time travellers' favourite and a great starting point to explore the impressive High Atlas Mountains. Climb Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North-Africa, passing lovely adobe villages and exploring the gorgeous Ourika and Amizmiz valleys on the way. The stunning panoramic view from the top will make it worth every bit of your effort to get there. Other praised hiking routes lead through the beautiful Ameln Valley in the Anti-Atlas and the wooded Rif Mountains in the very north.
Hop on a camel back for a trip through the golden Sahara sand dunes at Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga. Spend the night in a desert tent, under the incredibly starred sky. The Sahara is also accessible near the town of Zagora; it's easier to get to from Marrakech but doesn't have the imposing dunes of Erg Chebbi. Somewhat less easy to reach but therefor also less crowded are the dunes of Erg Chigaga near M'hamid. On your way to the desert, make sure not to miss the stunning Todra gorge near Tinghir. The ancient fortified city of Aït-Benhaddou is another must-see sight. Although rainstorms damage the mud-brick kasbahs time and again, this mostly abandoned village remains an impressive sight and has been the decor for a range of movies, including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.

Hammams
========
There are two types of Hammam (steam baths) across Morocco.
The first is the tourist hammam, where you can go and be pampered and scrubbed by an experienced staff member. As these are promoted only to tourists they are the more expensive option with pricing usually around DH 150 for a hammam. They can not be technically referred to as a proper hammam, but they are nonetheless enjoyable, especially for the timid. Your hotel can recommend a good one.
The second option is to visit a "popular" Hammam. Popular hammams are the places where the locals go. Ask the staff at your hotel where they would go.

Yankin' it in Europe: An American Guide to Studying Abroad.
Rob, since his advisor decided to take a week holiday, travels once again. This time he goes off to Gibraltar where he climbs a big rock, freaks out over the heights, looks at monkeys, and historizes. Next, he gets a little lost in Tangier, Morocco, Africa, but has an awesome cup of coffee. Last, he goes to his new favorite place (I mean, it's a very close second to London) which is Granada, Spain. FREE TAPAS PEOPLE! Also, he visits the Alhambra and does other legitimate touristy stuff.
The grand finale for Mike History Month: Robin Hood and the Founding of London.

Lyrics:
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sh*****************************t.
It's the remix of the remix!
Yeah I'm sailing the Straight of Gibraltar
From Europe to Africa on a journey that will not falter
Y double I single E that's me
But might have to change the name a little temporarily
'Cause I'm goin' from one continent to another
I think I'll be safe- well that's what I told my mother
On the way to freakin' Morocco
One of the places Aladdin might go (w00t!)
I'm goin' to explore the city of Tangier
But ladies calm down (have no fear)
Don't worry about Rob (have some cheer)
'Cause I'm obviously rappin' to you hotties from right here (London)

Tangier or Tangiers is a city of northern Morocco with a population of about 700,000 (2008 census). It lies on the North African coast at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Spartel. It is the capital of the Tangier-Tétouan Region.
The history of Tangier is very rich due to the historical presence of many civilizations and cultures starting from the 5th century BC. Between the period of being a Phoenician town to the independence era around the 1950s, Tangier was a place —and, sometimes a refuge— for many cultural diversities. However, it wasn't until 1923 that Tangier was attributed an international status by foreign colonial powers, thus becoming a destination for many Europeans and non-Europeans alike such as Americans and Indians.
Nowadays, the city is undergoing rapid development and modernization. Projects include new 5-star hotels along the bay, a modern business district called Tangier City Center, a new airport terminal and a new soccer stadium. Tangier's economy will also benefit greatly from the new Tanger-med port.

See http://www.seat61.com/Morocco for times, fares & tickets. This is a video guide to the journey from Tangier in Morocco to Madrid in Spain, via the FRS fast ferry from Tangier to Tarifa and Renfe's morning 'Altaria' train from Algeciras to Madrid Puerta de Atocha.
The video shows the famous Continental Hotel in Tangier, the ferry and train interiors and the scenery along the way. Note that the train segment is the same as that on the Gibraltar-Madrid video, so don't bother watching both train parts!
See www.seat61.com/Morocco.htm for details of how you can arrange this journey yourself.
It's not expensive - we paid €32 each for the ferry tickets online at www.frs.es and €28 each for the Algeciras-Madrid train tickets at www.renfe.com.
You can take the overnight 'trainhotel' sleeper train to Paris and Eurostar to London, but on this occasion we took a train Madrid to Santander, stayed overnight and took Brittany Ferries to Portsmouth, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk3e70fYYFk&feature;=plcp

Traveling to Morocco, I would actually suggest skipping Tangiers. Otherwise it may sour your want to visit the rest of this amazing country.
Took me several years after to force myself to go back and see the beauty of this country.
While traveling in Spain I decided to do a day trip to Tangier Morocco. From The rock of Gibraltar, it is less than an hour ferry ride away. 1000's of people make this trip a day, so I can understand how it would get annoying to the locals or maybe they were having a bad day, but almost everyone I encountered was very rude.
The tour was at a run, the guide didn't even give us much time to look. We had vendors following us and harassing us continually. Young boys (as young as 6!!!) would follow us as well and flip us off because we wouldn't give them money, who taught them that? The snake charmers snakes looked sick and not well cared for, it was really sad. Our lunch was great and our waiter was the nicest person we had met all day. The belly dancer was very good, but I don't think she enjoyed what she was doing.
After lunch the vendors were still waiting for us, so I bought some bracelets so they would leave me alone, 5 more joined in. In the bus, they were still harassing us, you will see the one flip me off, now I see where the small children learn to flip off the tourists.
This really was a once in a life time experience, once was all I needed.

Travel video about destination Morocco.
Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco, has the most important harbour in North Africa and is gateway to the magic of the Orient. In the Koran it says: ‘And Allah’s Throne Was On The Water !’ Thus inspired, the Grand Mosque was built on Casablanca’s shoreline. This monumental building was designed to accommodate 105,000 believers and its tall minaret dominates the city’s skyline. More than twelve million people helped finance this ‘Eighth Wonder Of The World’ which involved 90 engineers and 30,000 craftsmen and artists. Lying northwards along the Atlantic coast, is Rabat, Morocco’s capital and home to its government and royal family. The King’s Palace, the Palais Royal, is a town in itself. Surrounded by walls and protected by royal guards, since 1864 it has been the main residence of the Alaouite Dynasty which has been in power since 1666. To the south of RABAT lies Chellah, City of the Dead. The Merinde necropolis has a square tower and is surrounded by a wall made of crushed loam, proof that the Cathagers built a trading centre here in the 3rd century B.C. Amongst the tombs, the sarcophagus of Sultan Abou El-Hassan stands proud with its artistic engravings. Fez El-Bali dates back to the Middle Ages and contains narrow streets, a pungent mixture of scents, the penetrating sound of craftsmen and fine examples of the Moorish art of building. Travelling through the Atlas Mountains, the small town of Ilfrane boasts tranquil parks and ponds, modern residential areas and shady avenues which take the traveller by surprise. Just as with their ancestors over the centuries, even today nomads and their camels traverse the endless Sahara. For a distance of over 40 kilometres, the magic landscape of the sand dunes compares with the largest in the world. Finally, Marrakesh, dreamy city at the foot of the High Atlas and Morocco’s most beautiful city. What better location to end the fairytale that is Morocco!

Morocco is fulfulling our dreams about the Tales of One Thousand and One Nights even today. It is an exotic and romantic country with the thousand miracles or the Arab world; old cities, mosques, bazaars, natural beauties from palm tree gardens to sand dunes and from the frosty tops of the Atlas mountains to the beaches of Agadir. There are the oases in the Sahara, the colorful buildings of Marrakesh, the Anti-Atlas’s green valleys and the forts of the Foreign Legion. The royal cities are all wonderful: Casablanca, well known from the famous movie with the same title, the capital, Rabat, the ancient Fes, and the elegant cultural centre, Marrakesh. The Djemaa El Fna square has a unique atmosphere, where magicians, henna painters, acrobats, belly dancers, tale tellers from the Sahara, healers, dancers, Koran discussers, snake charmers and cooks make up the colorful market. Morocco with its thousand faces can be found in the buildings, which are incredibly ornamented, the sound of the snake charmers’ pipes, the silence of the mosques, the native people of the Sahara, the turmoil of the bazaar, the smell of various spices, the pattern of the carpets, the medinas conjuring the past, the taste of the mint tea, and it looks the way we always thought it would

Travel video about destination Marrakesh in Morocco.
Marrakesh, the 'red pearl' of Morocco was founded by Yusuf ibn Tashfin in 1062. It is one of the country's four Royal Cities. Up to the beginning of the 20th century, the city was a trading centre for both the north of Morocco and the Sahara and the monarchs of various dynasties made Marrakesh their capital city.
The large souks of Marrakesh's Medina are divided into numerous sections and stock just about everything known to man!
In spite of the city's apparent calm, there is much activity and the traffic is surprisingly well disciplined.
Marrakesh has the largest souks in Morocco. As well as shoes and clothing, they stock all the necessities of life and of course, bargaining and haggling are the norm! Daily life in the souks is dominated by trade. They are a vital meeting place and trading centre for the farmers of the High Atlas. Those who wish to experience Moroccan daily life can do so here and a stroll through the narrow alleys, taking in the city's sounds and aromas, explains far more than any travel guide.
Djemaa el Fna is the 'Square of the Beheaded' and is Marrakesh's most famous attraction with snake charmers, musicians and storytellers. In 2001, the Square of the Beheaded was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.
Built in 1158, the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque is the symbol of the city. The 77 metre tall sandstone minaret served as the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. Most of the mosque was built by Spanish prisoners of war.
Marrakesh is an historic bridge that unites both urban and nomadic cultures, an exotic gateway to Africa and a captivating window to Europe!

Travel video about destination Rabat in Morocco.
Rabat is the capital of Morocco and also its royal seat of power. The main residence of King Mohammed the Sixth is a fascinating modern metropolis. Along with its monumental works of art, it is the fourth oldest of the Makhzen cities, is also one of Morocco's most important.
Cafés and workshops reflect daily life and most of the city's souks are divided into specialized areas with items such as leather goods, blankets and carpets for sale and with a little haggling, it's possible to purchase quality handicrafts at a very modest price!
The Kasbah des Udayas was built by Yaqub al-Mansur in the 12th century. It is located at Rabat's most elevated point and is like a village within the city. The eight metre high wall once protected the Kasbah and its inhabitants. The fortress is inhabited to the present day.
Barred windows create an Andalusian ambience. The Kasbah is one of the most popular though most expensive addresses in Rabat.
Throughout the centuries, the Moroccan coast was dominated by pirates but the might of European colonialists put an end to their dubious activities.
The mausoleum of Mohammed V was built in 1967 and the tomb complex contains a mosque, a mausoleum and a small memorial that contains images of the king.
At the end of the 12th century, Yaqub al-Mansur constructed the largest mosque in the Maghreb. At a height of 60 metres, its minaret was taller than any other in North Africa. Four hundred columns support the prayer room and it has 14 gates.
Rabat is a fascinating capital city and royal residence - an exotic world that lies between both occident and orient.
