The most psychoactive alkaloid is 7-hydroxymitraginine. Caution~There is a possibility of addiction with regular use. Mitragyna speciosa alkaloids bind to opiate and adrenaline receptors in the brain. It is stimulating to the central nervous system, it's effects being more profound than those of caffeine. It's sublime, energizing effects may compel one to use it frequently, incrementally, and if used daily for periods of longer than a week this herb will begin to cause mild withdrawal symptoms upon stopping, although the threshold for withdrawal seems to vary widely between people. The extent of the withdrawal varies depending on duration/concentration of the material being used. Physical symptoms include insomnia, physical discomfort, restless legs, twitching, runny nose, lethargy. Mental symptoms include anxiety, depression, irritability, panic, sadness. These symptoms last 3-5 days, while the mental symptoms can extend for a week after stopping. As such, I therefore Only recommend using this herb, Occasionally, and if one chooses to do so, please do so with caution and respect for it's potential. To be safe using this herb, do not take in conjunction with other stimulants, prescription drugs, or caffeine. Mitragynine is a monoamine compound and cannot be mixed with MAO inhibitors. No conventional immunological drug screening test is known that will detect kratom alkaloids.~Traditionally, the fresh or dried leaves of kratom are chewed or brewed into tea. When making tea, lemon juice is often added to facilitate the extraction of plant alkaloids; before drinking, sugar or honey may be added to mask the bitter taste of the brew.To experience vigour and euphoria, traditional ‘kratom eaters’ chew one to three fresh leaves at a time. The veins are usually removed from the leaves before eating and sometimes salt is added ‘to prevent constipation’. Only the masticated material is swallowed. Consumption is followed by drinking warm water or tea. Regular and addicted users chew 3 to 10 times a day. When kratom is not available, the leaves of Mitragyna javanica (other name Mitragyna parvifolia) are used as substitute. Medicinal Use of Kratom~Kratom has been used in South-East Asia for conditions such as intestinal infections, muscle pain, to reduce coughing and diarrhea. Malay and Thai natives use Kratom for its opium and coca-like effects to enhance tolerance towards for hard work in extreme heat. Due to its analgesic (pain reliving) properties, Kratom has also been used by some to treat pain. Some research has been done with regards to analgesic potential, but neither Kratom nor its alkaloids have been utilized in modern medicine. Mitragynine has less analgesic effects than morphine, though it is still potentially useful in treating minor to moderate pain. Generally there is a high amount of mitragynine in the Kratom plant, making it practical to extract. 7-hydrohydroxymitragynine has been shown to have much stronger analgesic effects than , but it is less abundant in the Kratom plant. It might not be practical to extract this alkaloid from the Kratom plant, but if mitragynine can be converted into 7-hydrohydroxymitragynine, it might emerge as a replacement for modern medication. Opiate detox~Kratom can lessen the severity of opiate withdrawals. This is the reason that opiate users experience the powerful euphoric effects. Kratom's active alkaloids bind to the mu opioid receptors, though there are many different alkaloids and some may bind to kappa opioid receptors. The kappa opioid receptors do not mediate physical dependance (addiction) therefore kratom may be less addictive than opiates in some individuals.
