Six years of economic sanctions have crushed much of Iraq's industries.
Now many Iraqis are trying to make a living the old way - on the banks of the Tigris River.

In a staged display of his physical fitness, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein swam across the Tigris River three times on Tuesday.
The 60-year-old leader opened a swimming competition by completing three 100-metre crossings of the river.
Eight Presidential bodyguards swam alongside Saddam during the swim.
A similar event was staged by the Iraqis in 1995 but Western media claimed that on that occasion it was a Saddam double who completed the swim.
Saddam refuted the claims saying that he was easily fit enough to complete the course then and now.
The crossings marked the opening of an Iraqi swimming contest.
The competition commemorates Saddam's 1959 river crossing, after his participation in a failed attempt to assassinate the then prime minister, Abdul Karim Kassim.
The event was inaugurated by Iraq's National Olympic Committee in 1995.
The committee is headed by Saddam's son, Uday.

Ancient Mesopotamia by Mr. Nicky
To the tune of "Crank Dat" by Soulja Boi
Euphrates River
Hey, I got a new lesson for you about ancient Mesopotamia
The Euphrates River and the Tigris River formed the cradle of civilization
Akkadians long ago
Conquered Sumer, took control
Sargon led his armies, in their chariots they rolled
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Persian Gulf is where they found
Ancient ruins underground
Archaeologists did lots of excavation down
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
Both the Euphrates River
And the Tigris River used to flood
Bringing lots of fertile mud
But the problem was that water washed away their crops
Dams and levies made it stop
When it was dry they'd irrigate
Fighting over water led to war between the city states
Cuneiform is ancient writing
That tells us Sumer's city-states were always fighting
They were the first civilization in Mesopotamia
Then came the Akkadians who started empire mania
Akkadians long ago
Conquered Sumer, took control
Sargon led his armies, in their chariots they rolled
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
Near the Persian Gulf is where they found
Ancient ruins underground
Archaeologists did lots of excavation down
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
King Sargon got real old
Told his sons to take the throne
But the huge Akkadian empire would fall out of his control
Then came Hammurabi who would take full command
Hammurabi was the king of the Babylonians
(Man) Babylonia
Was the land where they told you
You obey Hammurabi's code
Praise Hammurabi's code
Break Hammurabi's code
And you'll be saying "oh no"
Akkadians long ago
Conquered Sumer, took control
Sargon led his armies, in their chariots they rolled
By the Euphrates River

By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
Near the Persian Gulf is where they found

Archaeologists did lots of excavation down
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
By the Euphrates River
Babylonians built roads
They traded grain for gold
They kept themselves united under Hammurabi's code
Hammurabi's code
Hammurabi's code
Hammurabi's code
Hammurabi's code
Which was a bunch of laws
They believed it had no flaws
They obeyed it just because
They thought Hammurabi was

River valley civilizations like that of the Mesopotamians were the basis of the agriculture based society we live in today. Understanding the origins of the people of modern day Iraq is just one step in a path to better understanding the world we live in today. The regional name Mesopotamia comes from the ancient Greek root words μέσος (meso) "middle" and ποταμός (potamia) "river" and literally means "between rivers". The Tigris and Euphrates rivers gave these people life and the ability to create a civilization we remember today.

"The picture they (the US and British) announced show they are really sick in their minds. They said they entered the middle of the capital and I inform you this is not true. They say this because they have sick minds. There is no British or American troops in Baghdad."

Iraq: Panning The River Tigris For Gold - 1999

Six years of economic sanctions have crushed much of Iraq's industries.
Now many Iraqis are trying to make a living the old way - on the banks of the Tigris River.
Hundreds of residents of Baghdad have begun panning the river for gold, hoping to sift a living from the former dumping ground for the capital's goldsmiths.
These people are banking their futures on the banks of the Tigris.
Scores of poor Iraqis have taken to panning for gold in the riverbed silt.
They sift for the dust and shavings discarded decades ago by Baghdad's goldsmiths, whose trade boomed at the turn of the century and trailed off 40 years ago.
Old men and children alike prospect for gold by straining sand from the river.
They have to go through huge quantities of sand to find even a minute amount of gold.
But even one tiny speck on the fingernail of a child can add up after weeks of collecting such small fragments.
The search for gold starts at sunrise every day and the workers continue right through to sunset.
It is harsh work, but the lure of finding a few precious grains and the money that will bring spurs people on to continue throughout the day.
The hunt for gold intensified in recent years because of the economic embargo imposed upon Iraq.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic)
"Searching for gold was very limited before the embargo was imposed upon us, but recently a lot of people are involved in this business because it allows us to make a good living."
SUPER CAPTION: Mohamed Hanza
For the prospectors, finding gold is the best way to earn money - now that the Iraqi authorities have lifted earlier restrictions on the practice.
After dusk, the lucky few who did manage to strike gold go to a nearby alley to watch a solderer melt the microscopic specks into nuggets.
It may take weeks of work to produce a small nugget.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic)
"This small piece of gold is worth one hundred and fifty-five Iraqi dinars."
SUPER CAPTION: Salem Al Desahi
The bits of gold are then sold back to goldsmiths, who may end up using gold their ancestors discarded decades ago in modern-day jewellery.
But U-N sanctions leave few Iraqis able to afford the ornaments, so some just trade the gold for goods.

After adjusting your gear you may end up with excess webbing straps hanging around. This can not only be annoying but in some situations it can add to the risk of getting caught up in foliage, rock fissures etc. This is a quick, cheap method I use to solve the problem. It does not involve any modification to the pack or webbing and is easily removed if you need to make adjustments. The Velcro type

Iran ( Persian ایران , officially the Islamic Un-Republic of Iran ( جمهوری اسلامی ایران, Jomhuri-ye Eslāmi-ye Irān), is a country in Western Asia. "Iran" means "Land of the Aryans"
Iran Known as Persia until 1935, Iran became an Islamic Un-Republic in 1979 after was overthrown by Arabs Terrorists supported by Britain and western media and Reoccupied by Arabs. Iranian nation is one of the Oldest Continuous Civilizations in the World. Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic populations occupied caves in the Zagros and Elburz mountains. The earliest civilizations in the region descended from the Zagros foothills, where they developed agriculture and animal husbandry, and established the first urban cultures in the Tigris-Euphrates basin in present day Iraq. The earliest urban peoples in what is today Iranian territory were the Elamites in the extreme southwest region of Khuzestan. The arrival of the Aryan peoples—Medes and Persians— on the Iranian plateau in the first millennium B.C.E. marked the beginning of the Iranian civilization, rising to the heights of the great Achaemenid Empire consolidated by Cyrus the Great in 550 B.C.E. Under the rulers Darius the Great and Xerxes, the Achaemenid rulers extended their empire from northern India to Egypt.
Down to the present, one pattern has repeated again and again in Iranian civilization: the conquerors of Iranian territory are eventually themselves conquered by Iranian culture. In a word, they become Persianized.
Art
Iran has one of the richest art heritages in world history and encompasses many disciplines including architecture, painting, weaving, pottery, calligraphy, metalworking and stonemasonry. There is also a very vibrant Iranian modern and contemporary art scene.
Iranian art has gone through numerous phases of evolution. The unique aesthetics of Iran is evident from the Achaemenid reliefs in Persepolis to the mosaic paintings of Bishapur.
There are several languages spoken in different parts of Iran. The predominant language and national language is Farsi Persian, which is spoken across the country
Religion in Iran
Zoroastrianism was the national faith of Iran for more than a millennium before the Arab conquest. It has had an immense influence on Iranian philosophy, culture and art after the people of Iran converted to Islam
Followers of the Baha'i faith comprise the largest non-Muslim minority in Iran. Most of the Baha'i are of Persian descent, although there seem to be many among the Azerbaijani and Kurdish people. The Baha'i are severely persecuted
Persian Rugs
In Iran, Persian Rugs have always been a vital part of the Persian culture
The Persian Garden was designed as a reflection of paradise on earth; the word "garden" itself coming from Persian roots. The special place of the garden in the Iranian heart can be seen in their architecture, in the ruins of Iran, and in their paintings
Cuisine:
Cuisine in Iran is considered to be one of the most ancient forms of cuisine around the world. Bread is arguably the most important food in Iran, with a large variety of different bread, some of the most popular of which include: nan and hamir, which are baked in large clay ovens (also called "tenurs"). In Iranian cuisine, there are many dishes that are made from dairy products.
Nowrūz ( نوروز, IPA: [nouˈɾuːz], "New Day", originally "New Light") is the name of the New Year in Iranian calendars and the corresponding traditional celebrations. Nowruz is also widely referred to as the Persian New Year.
The Haft Sīn items are: * sabzeh - wheat, barley or lentil sprouts growing in a dish - symbolizing rebirth * samanu - a sweet pudding made from wheat germ - symbolizing affluence * senjed - the dried fruit of the oleaster tree - symbolizing love * sīr - garlic - symbolizing medicine * sīb - apples - symbolizing beauty and health * somaq - sumac berries - symbolizing (the color of) sunrise * serkeh - vinegar - symbolizing age and patience.

The Greatest Buildings You'll Never See, 19 Priceless Monuments Lost In Conflict (Part 1). (CNN). It is a cruel irony that a region so blessed with the treasures of early human civilizations is also among those most troubled by conflict. As the violence threatens to annihilate some of history's greatest monuments, we count the cost of our irreplaceable losses. By Kieron Monks, for CNN. greatest building world, best building in world, tallest building world, beautiful building in the world, best places in europe, best places in the world, travel, travel guide,
Great Mosque of Samarra, Iraq
Once the largest mosque in the world, built in the 9th century on the Tigris River north of Baghdad. The mosque is famous for the Malwiya Tower, a 52-meter minaret with spiraling ramps for worshipers to climb. Among Iraq's most important sites, it even featured on banknotes. The site was bombed in 2005, in an insurgent attack on a NATO position, destroying the top of the minaret and surrounding walls.
The Buddhas of Bamyan, Afghanistan
The most spectacular legacy of Buddhism in the war-torn country, among the tallest standing Buddhas in the world -- the larger at 53 meters, the other 35 -- had survived over 1,500 years since being carved out of sandstone. The Taliban considered the monuments idolatrous and destroyed them with dynamite.
The ancient city of Bosra, Syria
Continually inhabited for 2,500 years, and became the capital of the Romans' Arabian empire. The centerpiece is a magnificent Roman theater dating back to the second century that survived intact until the current conflict. Archaeologists have revealed the site is now severely damaged from mortar shelling.
Norias of Hama, Syria
These 20-meter wide water wheels were first documented in the 5th century, representing an ingenious early irrigation system. Seventeen of the wooden norias (a machine for lifting water into an aqueduct) survived to present day and became Hama's primary tourist attraction, noted for their groaning sounds as they turned. Heritage expertsdocumented several wheels being burned by fighters in 2014.
Citadel of Aleppo, Syria
The fortress spans at least four millennia, from the days of Alexander the Great, through Roman, Mongol, and Ottoman rule. The site has barely changed since the 16th century and is one of Syria's most popular World Heritage sites. The citadel has been used as an army base in recent fighting and several of its historic buildings have been destroyed.
Deir Ez-zor bridge, Syria
This French-built suspension bridge was a popular pedestrian crossing and vantage point for its views of the Euphrates River. It became a key supply line in a battle for the city, and collapsed under shelling. Deir Ez-zor's Siyasiyeh Bridge was also destroyed.
Crac des Chevaliers, Syria
The Crusader castle from the 11th century survived centuries of battles and natural disasters, becoming a World Heritage site in 2006 along with the adjacent castle of Qal'at Salah El-Din. The walls were severely damaged by regime airstrikes and artillery in 2013, and rebels took positions within it.

The city of Van, on Lake Van's shores in eastern region of Turkey. Check out the 2014 promotional video.
Van, in Eastern Anatolian region of Turkey, is situated in a lush green sanctuary by Lake Van and is surrounded by rocky mountains. Lake Van is the largest lake in Turkey and it was formed when the Volcano Nemrut exploded. South to Van lies a fertile oasis enclosed by the Tigris and the Euphrates and it is said that this place is the Biblical Mesopotamia and the real Garden of Eden.
Apart from the obvious religious charm, Van has ample prospects of expedition, trekking, hunting or just lazing around in the beach. The best times of the year to enjoy Van is spring and autumn..
There are many places of interest at Van and might give you the feeling of being transported in time. Do take a guide along and remember that there are places, which charge you an entrance fee.
The Rock of Van is a tapered protrusion 1500m in length, over 100m in height, and 300m broad at the bottom.
The Hosap Castle built by a Kurdish chieftain, in 1643 has been recently excavated and much of it remains under the ground.
The Sarduri is an Urartian palace built by King Sardur II between 764 and 735 BC. Its temple has cuneiform inscriptions, and the palace has many modern marvels like storage containers, royal bathroom and water cisterns. There is also a container of grains, which is 2000yrs. old.
Akdamar Island is famous for its 10th century church of the Holy Cross.

The Velcro type strap used should be easy to find almost anywhere in the world as it is commonly used to keep electrical and computer cables tidy.

The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is the most numerous tiger subspecies. By 2011, the total population was estimated at fewer than 2,500 individuals with a decreasing trend. None of the Tiger Conservation Landscapes within the Bengal tiger's range is considered large enough to support an effective population size of 250 adult individuals. Since 2010, it has been classified as Endangered by the IUCN.
As of 2010, Bengal tiger populations in India have been estimated at 1,706–1,909.As of 2014, they have allegedly increased to an estimated 2,226 individuals,[3] but the method used in the census may not be accurate.Bengal tigers number around 440 in Bangladesh, 163–253 in Nepal, and 67–81 in Bhutan.
Bengal is traditionally fixed as the typical locality for the binomen Panthera tigris, to which the British taxonomist Reginald Innes Pocock subordinated the Bengal tiger in 1929 under the trinomen Panthera tigris tigris.

‘Year 149 (of the Seleucid era = 163/2 BC), Antiochus (V) king, month V[II, day x]. The Greeks, as they are called, the p[olitai], who in the past at the command of king Antiochus (IV) [had entered] Baby[lon] and who anoint with oil just like the pol[i tai] who are in Seleucia, the royal city, on the Tigris and the King’sCanal, [did] b[attle] with the prefect (šaknu) and the people of the land who are in Babylon. Day 8, at the command of the governor (pāhātu) of Babylon [the ...... and] the women, who among the politai, the people of the land, (and) the b[oul]ē, from Babylon into the region below Babylon because of the battle with the [prefect and his] troop[s, had gone ,] returned into Babylon.’
Of special interest are the ‘boundary marks’ given by the Babylonian scribe to the new group. They are ‘Greeks’, politai, and they ‘anoint with oil, just like the politai, who are in Seleucia, the royal city, on the Tigris and the King’s Canal’. The latter expression must refer to the activities of the Greeks in the gymnasium, where they sported nakedly and anointed themselves with olive oil. Admittance to the gymnasium was normally restricted to the citizens of Greek cities and was a hallmark of Greek citizenship. Del Monte discerns three population groups in Babylon, each with their own administrative institutions: firstly, the Babylonian citizens (mārē Bābili, ‘sons of Babylon’) under the shatammu (administrative head of the temple) and kinishtu (council) of the temple; secondly, the Greek citizens (puliţē or puliţānu, a loan word from Greek politai), under the authority of the ‘governor of Babylon’ (pāhāt Bābili = in my view the equivalent of the Greek term epistatēs), and, thirdly, the royal slaves led by ‘the prefect of the king’. The distinction is neatly made in an astronomical diary relating to a census held in 145 BC (king Demetrios II Nikator).
The institutions of the Greek community are not easily found, but new evidence sheds some light. In the first place the Greeks distinguished themselves as ‘citizens’ (politai), so they seem to have had their own politeia, ‘constitution’. It must be remembered though, that there is not one Greek exclusive format of a politeia. In the classical period the constitutions of e.g. Athens, Sparta and Corinth were very different. Normally, however, the following elements are recurring albeit under a widely differing terminology: 1. magistrates (archontes, stratēgoi, ephoroi, probouloi ); 2. one or more councils (boulē, synhedrion, gerousia, Areiopagos); 3. an assembly (ekklēsia, apella, dēmos). The constitutions were of a different nature: Athens was democratic, Sparta and Corinth both oligarchic but nonetheless different. Furthermore, it has to be kept in mind that the Seleucid empire was ruled by a Macedonian dynasty and Macedonian institutions, like epistatēs (governor) and Peliganes ([council of] ‘elders’), are attested in many places. Though as yet no word for assembly is attested in the Babylonian sources, it is evident that the politai met in the theatre. That Babylon disposed of a theatre, is known since the earliest excavations of ancient Babylon at the beginning of the 20th century. Its existence was further proven by a 2nd-century AD Greek inscription from the theatre, mentioning its repair.
Recently, the Greek theatre was found in the astronomical diaries as well. From these texts, it appears that kings had letters read out loud before the politai being assembled in the theatre. The Greek word theatron was translated into cuneiform as bīt tamarti, ‘house of observation.’The citizens now also appear to have had their own council of elders. This council was referred to with the Macedonian name peliganes, which is derived from the word pelioi meaning ‘oldmen’, gerontes. This term is attested in a Greek inscription from Laodicea on the Sea, dating to November/December 175 BC, the first regnal year of Antiochus IV, containing a decision of the peliganes. The name is also found in the corrupted form Adeiganes in Polybius V 54.10, which describes measures taken by Hermias in Seleucia on the Tigris after the suppression of the revolt of Molon against Antiochus III. The evidence from Babylon is now found in fragments of an unpublished chronicle in the British Museum, joined by Irving Finkel, who kindly called my attention to this document.
