Boston will be the 2024 U.S. Olympic bid city.
The U.S. Olympic Committee chose Boston over fellow finalists Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C, announcing the decision after a board of directors meeting in Denver on Thursday.
The decision took multiple rounds of voting after final presentations from each of the four cities, according to the USOC.
Boston’s ties to the Olympics
“We’re excited about our plans to submit a bid for the 2024 Games and feel we have an incredibly strong partner in Boston that will work with us to present a compelling bid,” USOC Chairman Larry Probst said in a press release. “We’re grateful to the leaders in each of the four cities for their partnership and interest in hosting the most exciting sports competition on earth. The deliberative and collaborative process that we put in place for selecting a city has resulted in a strong U.S. bid that can truly serve the athletes and the Olympic and Paralympic movements.”
Boston, which has never bid for the Olympics before, will go up against international bids including but not limited to Rome, Berlin or Hamburg and possibly Paris and a South African applicant.
“This selection is in recognition of our city’s talent, diversity and global leadership,” Boston mayor Marty Walsh said in a press release. “Our goal is to host Olympic and Paralympic Games that are innovative, walkable and hospitable to all. Boston hopes to welcome the world’s greatest athletes to one of the world’s great cities.”
The bid submission deadline is Sept. 15. The International Olympic Committee will choose candidate cities from those applicant cities in April/May 2016.
IOC members will vote to choose the 2024 Olympic host city in 2017 at a session in Lima, Peru.
Worldwide 2024 Olympic bidding coverage
The U.S. last hosted the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 and the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.
The current 22-year stretch is its longest gap between hosting Olympics since it went 28 years between 1932 and 1960.
Boston’s bid plans to make use of area colleges and universities in a plan that has been called compact. More details of its plan can be found on its website.
“The city is the Olympic park,” Dan O’Connell, president of the Boston 2024 Partnership, told the Boston Globe in September. “It becomes a public-transit and walking Olympics.”
Italy and Germany’s Olympic Committees said they will also bid for the 2024 Olympics. Rome will be Italy’s bid. Germany will choose between Berlin and Hamburg by the end of March.
A South African member of the IOC said his nation is also readying to bid for the 2024 Olympics. An African nation has never hosted an Olympics.
Paris may also bid to host the Olympics on the 100-year anniversary of the last time it hosted.
Early details of Boston’s 2024 Olympic concept
Of the four U.S. finalist cities, Los Angeles was the only one that hosted an Olympics — in 1932 and 1984.
San Francisco attempted bids for the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. New York and Chicago became the respective U.S. bids those years and lost in IOC voting to London and Rio de Janeiro.
President Barack Obama, who pitched at the IOC session in Copenhagen in 2009 for the Chicago 2016 bid, released this statement:
“The President and First Lady extend their congratulations to the City of Boston on its nomination by the United States Olympic Committee to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The city has taught all of us what it means to be Boston Strong. The President and First Lady couldn’t be prouder of this accomplishment and of all of our nation’s athletes, and strongly support the effort to bring the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to the United States. We hope to welcome athletes from around the globe to compete in Boston in 2024.”

US Olympic Committee Select Boston As 2024 Bid City
Boston officials are celebrating the city's selection as the U.S. nominee for the 2024 Olympics.
Boston wins gold! City beats off stiff competition from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington to join race for 2024 Olympics
Boston will bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the United States Olympic Committee has announced.
The Massachusetts city beat off competition from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C. to be the United States' candidate and joins Rome and an as yet undecided German city in the race to host the 2024 Games.
The International Olympic Committee's deadline for bid submissions is September 15 and the host city will be chosen in 2017.
United States Olympic Committee chairman Larry Probst said: 'We're excited about our plans to submit a bid for the 2024 Games and feel we have an incredibly strong partner in Boston that will work with us to present a compelling bid.
'We're grateful to the leaders in each of the four cities for their partnership and interest in hosting the most exciting sports competition on earth.
'The deliberative and collaborative process that we put in place for selecting a city has resulted in a strong U.S. bid that can truly serve the athletes and the Olympic and Paralympic movements.'
The United States last hosted the summer Games in Atlanta in 1996 and New York and Chicago had failed bids to host the 2012 and 2016 Games respectively.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said: 'It is an exceptional honour for Boston to be chosen as the U.S. representative in the running for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
'This selection is in recognition of our city's talent, diversity and global leadership.
'Our goal is to host Olympic and Paralympic Games that are innovative, walkable and hospitable to all. Boston hopes to welcome the world's greatest athletes to one of the world's great cities.'
The next summer Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 with Tokyo hosting in 2020.
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Back said: 'The Boston bid will be a strong one.
Bostonians are well known for their enthusiasm for sport and the city has a great heritage in sport, science and education.'
Boston hopes the fact that most of the venues will be within walking distance of the city centre will improve the chances of their bid.
So far, only Rome is the only other city to publicly announce its intention to bid for the games. Germany is expected to chose either Berlin or Hamburg, while Istanbul, Paris, Doha and an African city are also thought to be considering bids.
Former Massachusetts governor and failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney has backed the Boston bid. He was part of the team that brought the 2002 winter games to Salt Lake City.
Mr Romney said: 'We know Boston is the place to inspire a new generation of athletes to discover the greatness within.'
The USOC considered 35 cities over a 22-month evaluation process before deciding upon Boston.

"Australia is gearing up to host the 2000 Olympics, yet its own sporting history is far removed from the spirit of the Games. STORYLINE:
After months of scepticism about the state of its preparations, Athens is now ready to host the 2004 Olympic Games, according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge.
A relieved IOC president was treated to a tour of the main Olympic Sports Complex on Monday, four days ahead of the opening ceremony for the 2004 Games.
"This has been achieved with a great efficiency, amid - I must say - a great widespread scepticism", Rogge said after checking Athens Olympic stadium which will hold the opening ceremony of the 28the Olympic Games on Friday.
"We are ready. Our people in ATHOC are ready", guaranteed Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, Athens organising committee chief who showed Rogge the 75 000 seat stadium.
Only days before the Athens Olympics, Greek organisers insist the city is ready. They point proudly to the impressive main stadium, the deep-blue swimming complex and other spanking-new facilities that have sprouted in various corners of the city.
Much was left undone in the city's frantic race to the finish. Plans were changed, landscaping was cut back and the roof was left off the swimming pool.
Still, what many critics considered impossible as little as a year ago has suddenly become reality, venues are mainly finished, roads are open, trains and subways are running.
Athens' race to finish, though, will be felt by Greeks long after the games.
The total price tag for the Olympics has grown in the last two years from $5.5 billion to more than $7.2 billion. Some analysts predict the final cost could climb to $12.5 billion. A record $1.5 billion is being spent on security alone.

It's going to leave a great legacy to Greece and to Athens for generations to come."

In four days we start. We are ready."

"Thank you very much Mike. As Mike said, today really does represent another milestone for us in this 11 year quest to host the Olympic games with the report of the Evaluation, with the release of the Evaluation Commission's Report. And to be honest with you, we could not be more pleased with the report. In clearly every single category, the Evaluation Commission praised New york City, and so I really am absolutely thrilled, and I think it's a real compliment to the incredible NYC2012 team."

" The most important thing we have to do is get a positive vote this afternoon. That really is our only negative in here, and if we clear that hurdle, then it's a focus on the 115 members of the International Olympic Committee in continuing to sell our message to those 115 people, and we are doing that in lots of different ways".

STORYLINE:
New York bid leader Dan Doctoroff, founder of NYC2012, said in a press conference at their Manhattan headquarters Monday that he was "absolutely delighted" with the report that New York City received from the IOC Evaluation Commission in Lausanne.
New York won generally positive assessments, including one for its potential legacy, but the report cited the continuing uncertainty over its proposed 2 (b)billion US dollar stadium on Manhattan's West Side. A vote on the project, crucial to the city's chances, was postponed for a second time Friday and was scheduled for later Monday in Albany, N.Y.
The IOC report said "no guarantees were provided" to ensure that the stadium and an international broadcasting centre would be built.
Exactly a month before the vote, front-runner Paris received the best overall review Monday in an IOC evaluation of the five cities bidding for the 2012 Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee issued a 123-page report evaluating the bids of Paris, London, New York, Madrid and Moscow - the most competitive and glamorous field in Olympic bid history.
London, Madrid and New York all got positive ratings while long-shot Moscow came in for criticism.
The report did not rank the cities, but offered an insight into the strength and weaknesses of each bid. It focused on technical issues such as venues, financing, transportation, accommodations, security and public and government support.
The findings will serve as a guide for the 117 eligible IOC voting members who will cast secret ballots in Singapore on July 6. The vote, however, also will take into account geopolitical and other issues not covered by the report.
The report was based on visits to the five cities in February and March by the IOC evaluation commission, headed by Morocco's Nawal El Moutawakel.

"Australia is gearing up to host the 2000 Olympics, yet its own sporting history is far removed from the spirit of the Games. Some of its greatest sportspeople were denied the chance to make their mark. Why? Because of the colour of their skin. And even today, to be aborigine, is to be a second-class citizen. By John Pilger
Physically, there is no place like Sydney: the deep-water harbour, the tiara of Pacific beaches, the estuaries and secret bays where white eucalyptus rise up from the water's edge. At the city's centre is a stage-set like a small New York, its props the great bridge, the other-worldly opera house and the sparkling art-deco Olympic pool, built in the 30s, with an honour roll of 86 world swimming records, itself a world record. Beside it is Luna Park, a fun- fair announced by a huge face with a slightly demented smile.
This is Australia's facade - or showcase, as the promoters of the Olympic Games prefer. Opening in one year's time, the Games, sing the video choirs, are to herald "a new golden age", with Australians "the chosen ones to take the dream to the new millennium: a dream we all share".
The chosen ones left nothing to chance. When the International Olympic Committee came to inspect the city, the traffic lights were programmed to remain green as their limousines approached. The fascist past of the IOC's president, Juan Samaranch, rated barely a reference in the Sydney press, and the radio in his hotel room was "tuned" to avoid picking up a certain commentator who might raise the forbidden subject. Harbour cruises, lobster dinners, champagne and Cuban cigars were topped by gifts to African IOC delegates of Australian Sports Institute grants, each worth A$52,500 (£21,700). A "sucking-up fund" ran to A$28 million.
On one outing, the wife of an IOC delegate spotted a black man playing a didgeridoo at Circular Quay, where he is a tourist fixture. "Who's that?" she enquired.
"An aborigine," replied one of her hosts.
"Really? Where are the rest of them?"
"Er, in the outback."
Sydney has a large aboriginal ghetto, Redfern, just a five-minute limo drive away from the centre. It is easily distinguished from the rest of the city by an oppressive police presence. The aboriginal legal service, which is based in Redfern, tried to interest the IOC in the Australia its representatives had not seen, the one behind the facade, but there was no time and the atmosphere was not conducive: "Anyone who threatens Sydney's Olympic bid," a government minister had warned, "had better watch out." In Monaco, when the IOC met to decide on the winning city, Australia was presented as an oasis of human harmony, in marked contrast to China, its main rival for the games. Delegates were treated to street performances by aboriginal dancers and didgeridoo-players in full body paint, together with cavorting giant kangaroos and wombats.
Of course, white Australia has long appropriated the art and artefacts of the Aboriginal Dreaming. It was no surprise that the boomerang was adopted as the motif for the Sydney Games. Two Qantas aircraft have been repainted in indigenous designs, and there is an "indigenous advisory committee", headed by the affable former rugby star, Gary Ella, himself an aborigine. When foreign VIPs arrive next year, they will be met by aboriginal elders: "official greeters". And when the Olympic torch is first carried on Australian soil by Nova Peris-Kneebone, winner of the 200m at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, all those revelations of kickbacks, junkets and gifts of A$10,000 necklaces will be subsumed in the glow of an opening ceremony devoted to "mutual respect and reconciliation".
Kununurra is in the remote north of Western Australia. It is ancient, volcanic ground that can seem on fire when the sun rises and sets. The town reminded me of its equivalents in the South African veldt: manicured gardens, air-conditioned supermarkets, Toyota four-wheel drives, large, grey-skinned people. Half the population, however, is black. Where are they? The only employed aborigine I saw was a man holding the "Stop" and "Go" sign at some roadworks. The rest are in the shadows: face down in the park, silhouettes framed in doorways on the fringe of town.
The Olympic torch will come through Kununurra on its way to Sydney. Most of the population will cheer it on - except those black people who cannot see it, having been blinded by trachoma. Australia is the only developed country on the World Health Organisation's "shame list" of countries where children are still blinded by trachoma. Impoverished Sri Lanka has beaten the disease, but not rich Australia, especially Western Australia and the Northern Territory."

Russian President Vladimir Putin relaxed on Sochi's beachfront with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach on Saturday, ahead of Russia's highly anticipated hockey showdown with the United States.
Putin sipped coffee, laughed and relaxed with Bach at a seaside cafe after a short walk along the promenade near Sochi's Olympic Park.
Asked afterward whether he thought Russia would beat the US, Putin replied: "I hope we will win."
Putin and Bach sat next to each other at a table with former IOC President Jacques Rogge, Jean-Claude Killy, chairman of the IOC coordinating group for the Sochi Games, and Russian politicians Dmitry Kozak and Alexander Zhukov.
The unannounced visit was relatively low key, with macaroons and sweet bread left at the table uneaten, and part of the conversation focusing on the weather.
Sochi continues to bask in bright sunshine, and just a short distance from Putin and Bach, Olympic visitors were swimming and sunbathing along the pebbly beach.

It is a terrain of surpassing beauty: gently rolling, bathed in emerald, covered by an ominous mist. It is morning. A gentle breeze tries, and fails, to cut the humidity. With each step, I inch closer to the rumbling giant, my heart racing as I wind my way through dense underbrush. All at once, there it is: the volcano itself, vast and roiling. It dominates the landscape, cloaking me in shadow. I struggle to get a better look, but I've waited too long. Suddenly the mighty mountain erupts, exploding with a deafening roar. I scramble. All sense of time is lost.
At some point, who knows when, I look down. Remarkably, I am still clutching my putter, having retreated to the relative safety of the 12th hole. You tried to best me, oh Hawaiian Rumble miniature golf course in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. But I have dug deep, and survival is mine.
Until, that is, exactly 20 minutes from now, when the thing will go off again.
Not wanting to tempt fate twice, I bolt to the clubhouse. There, behind a counter covered with golf clubs of every conceivable size and golf balls of every conceivable hue, sits Bo Taylor. He is, I immediately decide, a rare sort of South Carolinian. Rare not because he spends most of his waking hours at Hawaiian Rumble, the most important course in what is indisputably the mini-golf capital of the world. And rare not because he travels from home to work each morning in a burgundy golf cart outfitted with mag wheels. No, Bo Taylor is rare because of his decades-long, unrepentant, curator's love of kitsch. Good kitsch, I mean.
And one thing's certain: He needn't fear for his legacy. Myrtle Beach's ability to attract and breed kitsch -- good kitsch, I mean -- is something even more fearsome than Taylor's volcano. And that's no small part of the area's charm. In fact, you could argue that America needs more of these Black Swan landscapes, where past is no guide to future, where nutty ideas invariably find fertile soil, where improbable notions can become a life's work.
"I joke about it, but it's very serious business," says Taylor, 50. How serious? Olympic Games serious. It turns out that Taylor and a guy by the name of Bob Detwiler are busily readying for the day that the International Olympic Committee decides to include miniature golf in its roster of summer sports. For now, Detwiler, who is president of the U.S. ProMiniGolf Association, is content to run the group's Masters tournament, which is played here each fall on two courses, the Hawaiian Rumble and nearby Hawaiian Village, both of which he owns. In past years, Masters winners have received about $18,000 in prize money, not to mention a green jacket.
"Let me rephrase that. You get a green windbreaker," says Taylor, adding that the 12-round tournament regularly attracts premier competitors from around the world, including Olivia Prokopova, a Czech teen phenom who travels with an entourage, and a Swedish champion named Hans Olofsson. The atmosphere at the Masters of mini-golf is every bit as tense as the one at that other Masters, Taylor says, and many a talented putt-putter has let a nine-stroke lead get away under the glare of the cameras.
"They say to themselves, 'I'm gonna be on ESPN2,' and that plays with their heads," Taylor reports.

In the autumn of 2015 the choir from La Côte International School was chosen to perform in a spectacular show called “Champions!” to celebrate the 100 years anniversary of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne.
2 weeks before the show, students from La Côte International School made a bold move. They organised a flash mob and the streets of Lausanne became their stage.
In this video, the students describe the amazing experience leading up to their champions performance in a behind- the- scene mini documentary.

The president of the Russian Olympic Committee said on Thursday that Russia has begun work with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), at a presser in the Russian capital.
SOT, Alexander Zhukov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee, (Russian): "I want to say that today the WADA commission is arriving, which will be working on changes in RUSADA to align it with the WADA code." *JUMP CUT AT SOURCE*
SOT, Alexander Zhukov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee, (Russian): "Today in my speech I underlined once again our zero tolerance towards doping from the Olympic movement and Russian Olympic committee. Our position is clear and firm: everyone who gets caught doping has to be punished. This is about sportsmen who have to be disqualified, coaches, doctors and those specialists who are involved. At the same time the rights of the athletes who are clean must be protected."
SOT, Alexander Zhukov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee (Russian): "The work with WADA has begun. They sent us some recommendations before the arrival about changes in the RUSADA constitution, changes in the Supervisory Board and others. This work is conducted mostly by the Ministry of Sport, it interacts with WADA and its commission here."
SOT, Alexander Zhukov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee (Russian): "As for RUSADA, anyone could become the head of it. We are interested in making its work clear and corresponding completely with the anti-doping code."

The IOC is considering a more detailed guidance around Organisation design for current and future OCOGs than has been offered in recent Games to attempt to promote even greater organisational efficiency and embedded integration into the Olympic project. This project involves analysing existing technical manuals, comparing previous and current Games organisational design, as well as interviewing people’s management leadership. It aims at highlighting/concluding trends and challenges that can be used to inform the IOC future support and guidance to OCOGs in the future.
About the AISTS
The AISTS (International Academy for Sports Science and Technology) is a foundation located in Lausanne, the Olympic Capital, Switzerland. It was founded in 2000 by the International Olympic Committee, EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne), IMD Business School, University of Lausanne, University of Geneva, EHL (Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne), City of Lausanne, and the Canton of Vaud.
The mission of the AISTS is to Master Sport by positively contributing to sports management through a multi-disciplinary approach to education and sciences and by remaining at the forefront of the sport industry's development and the Olympic movement.
