Virtues Of Dhul Hijjah ᴴᴰ - by Sheikh Dr. Yasir Qadhi
Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaathuhu!
This is Yasir Qadhi. The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah, our Prophet (ﷺ) has reminded us, are the most blessed & holiest days of the year. Unfortunately, many Muslims completely ignore or trivialize the importance of these days. Many of us have this perception or concept that, the days of Ramadan are the best days of the entire year. However, as many of our great scholars have pointed out, including Sheikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimuhullahu ta'ala), it is in fact the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, that are the most blessed & the most noble days in the entire year; so much so that, many of the early commentators said that when Allah says in the Quran, 'the ten nights' or 'the ten days' if you like, that 'qasam' or that oath is a reference to the first ten days of Dhul Hijja. And our Prophet (ﷺ) told us, that there are no days of the entire year in which deeds are rewarded more or considered more blessed than these very first ten days. The Sahabah said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Even striving for the sake of Allah, is not better than doing good deeds in these ten days?' He said, 'Yes. Even striving for the sake of Allah; except for the man who leaves in that path and in that struggle and he takes all that is with him and he takes his life and his belongings and he comes back with nothing of that.' Meaning that he becomes a martyr striving for the sake of Allah (subhaanahu wa ta'ala). Now the point being, that these ten days therefore, are the most blessed days of the year for us to increase our good deeds in. And there are many good deeds that can be done. Some of those good deeds are of course, number 1. The Hajj itself - which can only be done during this time. Also, fasting in these days; the Prophet (ﷺ) said that, 'fasting on the 9th of this month is a day that forgives the sins of the years before.' And our Prophet (ﷺ) told us that these are the days that we are supposed to say takbeer & tahmeed; to do dhikr of Allah ('azza wa jal) & the sahabah would do dhikr loudly on these days. Also, increasing our knowledge of the religion of Islam; one of the easiest & best ways to come closer to Allah (subahaanahu wa ta'ala), increasing our salawaat, our nafil, visiting our relatives, being kind & merciful to our parents, being generous to the poor; all of these deeds are just some of the many many ways that we can come closer to Allah in these blessed & holy days. My dear brothers & sisters in Islam, knowledge is nothing, unless implemented into action. These are the days of action. So in shaa Allah I hope that the knowledge that some of us have imparted to you & we have benefited from each other, I hope that, that knowledge is manifested, especially & in particular in these ten days. May Allah (subhaanahu wa ta'ala) forgive our sins, cover up our faults, allow us to come closer to Him & make us to be of the blessed company of the siddiqeen & the shuhadaa & the saaliheen, in the hereafter.

The first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah:
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days." The people asked, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?" He said, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 2/457).

Praise be to Allaah.
Ten days are better than all other days of the year, with no exception, even the last ten days of Ramadaan. But the last ten nights of Ramadaan are better than the first ten nights of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because they include Laylat al-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months. See Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 5/412.
So the Muslim should start these days with sincere repentance to Allaah, then he should do a lot of righteous deeds in general, then he should pay attention to doing the following deeds:
1 -- Fasting
It is Sunnah for the Muslim to fast on the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged us to do righteous deeds in the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, and fasting is one of the best of deeds, which Allaah has chosen for Himself as it says in the hadeeth qudsi: "Allaah says: 'All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except fasting, which is for Me and I shall reward for it." Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1805.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah. It was narrated from Hunaydah ibn Khaalid from his wife, that one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah and the day of 'Ashoora', and three days each month, the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays. Narrated by al-Nasaa'i, 4/205 and by Abu Dawood; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 2/462.
2 -- Reciting tahmeed, tahleel and takbeer a great deal
"Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illa-Allaah,
Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, wa Lillaahi’L-hamd"
(Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, there is no god but Allaah; Allaah is Most Great and to Allaah be praise).
It is Sunnah to recite takbeer (saying Allaahu akbar (Allaah is most great)), tahmeed (saying al-hamdu Lillah (praise be to Allaah)), tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah (There is no god but Allaah)) and tasbeeh (saying Subhaan-Allaah (Glory be to Allaah)), during the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, saying these words out loud in the mosques, homes, streets and every place in which it is permissible to remember Allaah, to perform this act of worship openly and proclaim the greatness of Allaah.
Men should recite out loud and women should recite quietly.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"That they may witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e. reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade), and mention the Name of Allaah on appointed days, over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them (for sacrifice)" [al-Hajj 22:28]
The majority are of the view that the "appointed days" are the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because it was narrated from Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the appointed days are the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah.
It was narrated from 'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There are no days that are greater before Allaah or in which good deeds are more beloved to Him, than these ten days, so recite a great deal of tahleel, takbeer and tahmeed during them." Narrated by Ahmad, 7/224; its isnaad was classed as saheeh by Ahmad Shaakir.
And there are other versions.
This takbeer has become a forsaken Sunnah nowadays, especially at the beginning of these ten days. You can hardly hear it except from a few. It should be recited out loud, so as to revive the Sunnah and remind the heedless. It was proven that Ibn 'Umar and Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with them both) used to go out to the marketplace during the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, reciting the takbeer out loud, and the people would recite takbeer when they heard them, i.e., the people would remember the talkbeer and each one would recite it by himself; it does not mean that they recited in unison -- that is not prescribed in sharee'ah.
3 -- Doing Hajj and 'Umrah
One of the greatest deeds that can be done during these ten days is Hajj to the sacred House of Allaah. Whoever Allaah helps to go on Hajj to His House and do the rituals in the required manner will -- in sha Allaah -- be included in the words of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "An accepted Hajj brings no less a reward than Paradise."
4 -- Udhiyah (sacrifice)
One of the righteous deeds that bring a person closer to Allaah in these ten days is to slaughter the sacrifice and to look for a good, fat animal and to spend money on it for the sake of Allaah.
Let us hasten to make the most of these great days, before the negligent regrets what he did, and before he asks to go back and receives no response.

Al-bukhari narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), that The Prophet (p.B.U.H.) said: "There are not any days in which righteous deeds done in them are more beloved to Allah than these days, I.E. The ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah). They said: O, Messenger of Allah, not even jihad in the path of Allah? He said: Not even jihad in the path of Allah most high, except if a man goes out (for jihad) with his self and his wealth, then he doesn't return with anything from that."

Maulana Tariq Jameel (Urdu: مولانا طارق جمیل) (born 1953) is an Islamic scholar from Pakistan. His native town is Tulambah near Mian Channu. His father was an agriculturist who belonged to the Muslim Rajputs community.[citation needed]
Tariq Jameel was born and raised in Mian Channu. In his childhood he lived a relatively modest life but religion was not a major part of his life and his family in particular. It wasn't until he pursued his M.B.B.S. in Lahore that his focus shifted towards Islam. After completing his Higher Secondary School education (a.k.a. F.Sc in some regions of Pakistan) in pre-medical (equivalent to A 'levels') from Government College, Lahore, he took admission in King Edward Medical College in Lahore. He intended to do his M.B.B.S., but he soon switched to Islamic education. He then went on to receive Islamic education from Jamia Arabia, Raiwind (near Lahore), Pakistan where he studied Quran, Hadith, Sharia, Tasawwuf, logic and Fiqh.[citation needed]
His proclivity towards Islam grew during hostel life in Lahore and can mainly be attributed to the group members of Tablighi Jamaat who he became friends with during his college life.[citation needed]

Narrated by al-Nasaa'i, 4/205 and by Abu Dawood; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 2/462. 2 -- Reciting tahmeed, tahleel and takbeer a great deal "Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illa-Allaah, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, wa Lillaahi’L-hamd" (Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, there is no god but Allaah; Allaah is Most Great and to Allaah be praise). It is Sunnah to recite takbeer (saying Allaahu akbar (Allaah is most great)), tahmeed (saying al-hamdu Lillah (praise be to Allaah)), tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah (There is no god but Allaah)) and tasbeeh (saying Subhaan-Allaah (Glory be to Allaah)), during the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, saying these words out loud in the mosques, homes, streets and every place in which it is permissible to remember Allaah, to perform this act of worship openly and proclaim the greatness of Allaah. Men should recite out loud and women should recite quietly. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "That they may witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e. reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade), and mention the Name of Allaah on appointed days, over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them (for sacrifice)" [al-Hajj 22:28] The majority are of the view that the "appointed days" are the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because it was narrated from Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the appointed days are the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah. It was narrated from 'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There are no days that are greater before Allaah or in which good deeds are more beloved to Him, than these ten days, so recite a great deal of tahleel, takbeer and tahmeed during them." Narrated by Ahmad, 7/224; its isnaad was classed as saheeh by Ahmad Shaakir. And there are other versions. This takbeer has become a forsaken Sunnah nowadays, especially at the beginning of these ten days. You can hardly hear it except from a few. It should be recited out loud, so as to revive the Sunnah and remind the heedless. It was proven that Ibn 'Umar and Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with them both) used to go out to the marketplace during the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, reciting the takbeer out loud, and the people would recite takbeer when they heard them, i.e., the people would remember the talkbeer and each one would recite it by himself; it does not mean that they recited in unison -- that is not prescribed in sharee'ah. 3 -- Doing Hajj and 'Umrah One of the greatest deeds that can be done during these ten days is Hajj to the sacred House of Allaah. Whoever Allaah helps to go on Hajj to His House and do the rituals in the required manner will -- in sha Allaah -- be included in the words of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "An accepted Hajj brings no less a reward than Paradise." 4 -- Udhiyah (sacrifice) One of the righteous deeds that bring a person closer to Allaah in these ten days is to slaughter the sacrifice and to look for a good, fat animal and to spend money on it for the sake of Allaah. Let us hasten to make the most of these great days, before the negligent regrets what he did, and before he asks to go back and receives no response. -

TAKBEER TAHLEEL TAHMEED - in 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah
Bismillahi Rrahmanni Rraheem. Praise be to Allaah. Ten days are better than all other days of the year, with no exception, even the last ten days of Ramadaan. But the last ten nights of Ramadaan are better than the first ten nights of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because they include Laylat al-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months. See Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 5/412. Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaathuhu!
This is Yasir Qadhi. The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah, our Prophet (ﷺ) has reminded us, are the most blessed & holiest days of the year. Unfortunately, many Muslims completely ignore or trivialize the importance of these days. Many of us have this perception or concept that, the days of Ramadan are the best days of the entire year. However, as many of our great scholars have pointed out, including Sheikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimuhullahu ta'ala), it is in fact the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, that are the most blessed & the most noble days in the entire year; so much so that, many of the early commentators said that when Allah says in the Quran, 'the ten nights' or 'the ten days' if you like, that 'qasam' or that oath is a reference to the first ten days of Dhul Hijja. And our Prophet (ﷺ) told us, that there are no days of the entire year in which deeds are rewarded more or considered more blessed than these very first ten days. The Sahabah said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Even striving for the sake of Allah, is not better than doing good deeds in these ten days?' He said, 'Yes. Even striving for the sake of Allah; except for the man who leaves in that path and in that struggle and he takes all that is with him and he takes his life and his belongings and he comes back with nothing of that.' Meaning that he becomes a martyr striving for the sake of Allah (subhaanahu wa ta'ala). Now the point being, that these ten days therefore, are the most blessed days of the year for us to increase our good deeds in. And there are many good deeds that can be done. Some of those good deeds are of course, number 1. The Hajj itself - which can only be done during this time. Also, fasting in these days; the Prophet (ﷺ) said that, 'fasting on the 9th of this month is a day that forgives the sins of the years before.' And our Prophet (ﷺ) told us that these are the days that we are supposed to say takbeer & tahmeed; to do dhikr of Allah ('azza wa jal) & the sahabah would do dhikr loudly on these days. Also, increasing our knowledge of the religion of Islam; one of the easiest & best ways to come closer to Allah (subahaanahu wa ta'ala), increasing our salawaat, our nafil, visiting our relatives, being kind & merciful to our parents, being generous to the poor; all of these deeds are just some of the many many ways that we can come closer to Allah in these blessed & holy days. My dear brothers & sisters in Islam, knowledge is nothing, unless implemented into action. These are the days of action. So in shaa Allah I hope that the knowledge that some of us have imparted to you & we have benefited from each other, I hope that, that knowledge is manifested, especially & in particular in these ten days. May Allah (subhaanahu wa ta'ala) forgive our sins, cover up our faults, allow us to come closer to Him & make us to be of the blessed company of the siddiqeen & the shuhadaa & the saaliheen, in the hereafter.

Ten days are better than all other days of the year, with no exception, even the last ten days of Ramadaan. B...
Bismillahi Rrahmanni Rraheem.
Praise be to Allaah.
Ten days are better than all other days of the year, with no exception, even the last ten days of Ramadaan. But the last ten nights of Ramadaan are better than the first ten nights of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because they include Laylat al-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months. See Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 5/412.
So the Muslim should start these days with sincere repentance to Allaah, then he should do a lot of righteous deeds in general, then he should pay attention to doing the following deeds:
1 -- Fasting
It is Sunnah for the Muslim to fast on the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged us to do righteous deeds in the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, and fasting is one of the best of deeds, which Allaah has chosen for Himself as it says in the hadeeth qudsi: "Allaah says: 'All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except fasting, which is for Me and I shall reward for it." Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1805.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah. It was narrated from Hunaydah ibn Khaalid from his wife, that one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah and the day of 'Ashoora', and three days each month, the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays. Narrated by al-Nasaa'i, 4/205 and by Abu Dawood; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 2/462.
2 -- Reciting tahmeed, tahleel and takbeer a great deal
"Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illa-Allaah,
Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, wa Lillaahi’L-hamd"
(Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, there is no god but Allaah; Allaah is Most Great and to Allaah be praise).
It is Sunnah to recite takbeer (saying Allaahu akbar (Allaah is most great)), tahmeed (saying al-hamdu Lillah (praise be to Allaah)), tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah (There is no god but Allaah)) and tasbeeh (saying Subhaan-Allaah (Glory be to Allaah)), during the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, saying these words out loud in the mosques, homes, streets and every place in which it is permissible to remember Allaah, to perform this act of worship openly and proclaim the greatness of Allaah.
Men should recite out loud and women should recite quietly.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"That they may witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e. reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade), and mention the Name of Allaah on appointed days, over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them (for sacrifice)" [al-Hajj 22:28]
The majority are of the view that the "appointed days" are the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because it was narrated from Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the appointed days are the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah.
It was narrated from 'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There are no days that are greater before Allaah or in which good deeds are more beloved to Him, than these ten days, so recite a great deal of tahleel, takbeer and tahmeed during them." Narrated by Ahmad, 7/224; its isnaad was classed as saheeh by Ahmad Shaakir.
And there are other versions.
This takbeer has become a forsaken Sunnah nowadays, especially at the beginning of these ten days. You can hardly hear it except from a few. It should be recited out loud, so as to revive the Sunnah and remind the heedless. It was proven that Ibn 'Umar and Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with them both) used to go out to the marketplace during the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, reciting the takbeer out loud, and the people would recite takbeer when they heard them, i.e., the people would remember the talkbeer and each one would recite it by himself; it does not mean that they recited in unison -- that is not prescribed in sharee'ah.
3 -- Doing Hajj and 'Umrah
One of the greatest deeds that can be done during these ten days is Hajj to the sacred House of Allaah. Whoever Allaah helps to go on Hajj to His House and do the rituals in the required manner will -- in sha Allaah -- be included in the words of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "An accepted Hajj brings no less a reward than Paradise."
4 -- Udhiyah (sacrifice)
One of the righteous deeds that bring a person closer to Allaah in these ten days is to slaughter the sacrifice and to look for a good, fat animal and to spend money on it for the sake of Allaah.
Let us hasten to make the most of these great days, before the negligent regrets what he did, and before he asks to go back and receives no response.

Like Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha begins with a Sunnah prayer of two rakats followed by a sermon (khutbah). Eid al-Adha celebrations start after the descent of the Hujjaj, the pilgrims performing the Hajj, from Mount Arafat, a hill east of Mecca. Eid sacrifice may take place until sunset on the 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.[5] The days of Eid have been singled out in the Hadith as "days of remembrance". The takbir (days) of Tashriq are from the Fajr prayer of the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah up to the Asr prayer of the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah (5 days and 4 nights). Ibn Abbas (radhiyallahu anhu) that Rasulullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said: “There is no day wherein any good action is more beloved to Allah Ta’ala than these ten days (the first ten days of Zul Hijjah)”. The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu anhum) enquired: ” Not even Striving in the path of Allah ?” “Not even Striving in the path of Allah,” replied Rasulullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) , “with the exception of that person who left with his life and wealth (in the path of Allah) and did not return with any of it (i.e. he is martyred)“. (Bukhari)
Recommended Acts During these Blessed Days
Generally speaking any act that Allah is pleased with should be done in these days. The primary act to be done abundantly is the tahleel, takbeer and tahmeed as these were the first to be mentioned in the narration Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) where the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “There are no days that are greater before Allah or in which good deeds are more beloved to Him, than these ten days, so recite a great deal of tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-Allah), takbeer (saying Allahu akbar) and tahmeed (saying al-hamdu Lillah) during them.”
It is reported that once the Ten Days started, Sa’eed bin Jubair, the famous scholar of the second generation would exert himself in excessive worship of Allah.
Dhikr [Remembrance of Allah swt]
“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured” [13:28]
Fasting
The Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) has said, “One fast during these days is equal to the fasting of one complete year, and the worship of one night during this period is equal to the worship in the “Lailatul-Qadr.” (Tirmidhi)
Abu Qataadah (radhiyallahu anhu) reported that Rasullullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said: “I have hope in Allah Ta’ala that the fast of Arafaat will be an atonement for the sins of the past and the forthcoming year.” (Tirmidhi)

Sacrifice, for it is the ancient ritual of our forefather Ibrahim and was ordered for our Prophet (Peace and salutations be upon him) when Allah said “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]” [108: 2]
The Prophet (Peace and Salutations be upon him) said: “The son of Adam does not perform any actions on the day of sacrifice which is more pleasing to Allah than the shedding of blood. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves. The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground…” [Tirmithi, Ibn Majah]

Our lives are short and our accountability great. We cannot afford to let golden moments like these pass by without expending ourselves in the worship of Allah
Ibn al-Qayim explained that the best nights of the year are the last ten nights of Ramadan while the best days of the year are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah
Ibn Taymiyyah was asked and his answer was, “the last ten nights of Ramadan are better in terms of the night and the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah are better in terms of the days. Ibn al-Qayyim confirmed this and Ibn Kathir accepted this conclusion.
Significance in the Quran
So sacred are the first ten days of Zul Hijjah that Allah swears an oath by them when He says in the Quran: “By the dawn; by the ten nights” [89:1-2]. Swearing an oath by something indicates its importance and great benefit
So let our mosques and homes resound with wave after wave of the takbeer of Allah until they resemble the market places of Medina in the era of the companions

Importance in Hadith
In fact there is an explicit Prophetic tradition narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah in which the Prophet said, “The best days of this world are the ten days (meaning the ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah).” The hadith was reported by al-Bazzar and many traditionalists considered it authentic.

Do you know what the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are and why are these days so important not only for the people who are making hajj but for all the Muslims?
What should the Muslims be doing in these 10 days?
Among the great seasons of worship are the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah, which Allah has favoured over other days. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." They said: "Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?" He said: "Not even jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out himself for jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything." Narrated by al-Bukhari, 2/457
It was also narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There is no deed that is better before Allah or more greatly rewarded than a good deed done in the (first) ten days of al-Adha." It was said: "Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?" He said: "Not even jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out himself for jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything." Narrated by al-Daarimi, 1/357; its isnad is hasan as stated in al-Irwa', 3/398.
These texts and others indicate that these ten days are better than all other days of the year, with no exception, even the last ten days of Ramadan. But the last ten nights of Ramadan are better than the first ten nights of Dhu'l-Hijjah, because they include Laylat al-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months. See Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 5/412.
So the Muslim should start these days with sincere repentance to Allah, then he should do a lot of righteous deeds in general, then he should pay attention to doing the following deeds...

In 2008-2009 Alyas completed a project called 'Reducing the risks of radicalisation for prisoners' funded by the EU and undertaken jointly with London Probation service- the research was based on direct work with terrorist offenders and currently informs the risk assessment framework of the probation service.
