A court in Bahrain has sentenced senior opposition figure Majeed Milad to two years in prison for allegedly inciting people to public disobedience.
Authorities arrested Milad, a senior member of the Al Wefaq opposition political party, in June. A Bahraini prosecutor says Milad has the right to appeal the ruling. The Bahraini regime has sentenced many dissidents to long jail terms since a popular uprising began in the Persian Gulf kingdom in 2011. Security forces have also harshly cracked down on anti-government protests during the period, killing many of the demonstrators.

On the eve of legislative elections in Bahrain, the kingdom’s main opposition group is warning the regime that a failure to bring democracy to the nation will lead to more violence.
Leader of al-Wefaq Society Sheikh Ali Salman said the Saudi-backed Al Khalifah rulers must end their monopoly on power and state affairs or face a surge in unrest. His comments came after Manama said it is open to dialog. But according to Ali Salman, talks are possible only if the regime agrees to implement genuine reforms that lead to a real constitution with an elected, independent government. Meanwhile, regime forces in Diraz have attacked people who were protesting against Saturday’s elections. Manama will hold legislative and municipal polls on Saturday. Al-Wefaq and four other Sunni and Shia groups have boycotted the vote.

The head of Bahrain's main Shi'ite Muslim opposition group, detained on Sunday after leading a protest rally over last month's elections, has been remanded in custody for a further week, a group official said on Tuesday.
In Geneva, the United Nations human right office said it was concerned at the detention and potentially lengthy prison sentence that could be handed to Sheikh Ali Salman, secretary general of al-Wefaq Islamic Society.
"Opposition parties are fundamental pillars of any democracy and Sheikh Salman’s arrest risks intensifying the fraught political scene that has seen anti-government protests for nearly four years," a spokeswoman for U.N. Human Rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein Zeid's office said in a statement.

Bahrain’s main opposition bloc Al-Wefaq has called for the immediate release of its leader. The group warns that the move will only complicate the nation’s political situation.
Al-Wefaq has called Sheikh Ali Salman’s detention, a dangerous adventure, an irresponsible step, and an insult to the whole Bahraini nation. Sheikh Salman was arrested on Sunday following a lengthy interrogation in his lawyer’s absence. He was summoned by police on Saturday shortly after Al-Wefaq re-elected him as leader. Manama has accused Salman of inciting hatred against the government and calling for its overthrow. Following the arrest, clashes broke out between security forces and hundreds of his supporters across the country. Police restored to tear gas and birdshot to disperse the crowds.

Clashes erupted between riot police and anti-government protesters in Bahrain on Friday, during a demonstration to demand the release of Sheikh Ali Salman, whose opposition political party commands a strong following among Shiite Muslims in the country.
The Shiite cleric and leader of Al-Wefaq Society was arrested on Sunday.
He has been accused of inciting hatred against the Sunni-led monarchy and calling for its overthrow by force.
Protesters have taken to the streets daily to demand his release.
In Salman's home village of Bilad al-Qadeem, a suburb of Manama, protesters marched through the streets, holding up posters of Salman and shouting "Down with Hamad," referring to the king.
Although the march was largely peaceful, clashes erupted when riot police fired tear gas at masked young men who threw stones back and taunted the police with posters of Salman.
Al-Wefaq has played a leading role in the mostly Shiite-led protests that erupted in February 2011.
The United Nations, European Union and United States have expressed concern over Salman's arrest, which has been widely viewed as an escalation likely to deepen the political standoff between the Arab nation's majority Shiite population and its Sunni-led monarchy.
Al-Wefaq is demanding greater power-sharing between elected lawmakers and the Sunni monarchy, the release of political prisoners and a prime minister chosen by elected officials and not the king.

The main Shia opposition leader in Bahrain, Sheikh Ali Salman, has been jailed for four years for inciting violence, state media say.
Sheikh Salman was convicted of inciting hatred, promoting disobedience and "insulting" public institutions.
His al-Wefaq movement has accused the Sunni-led government of aggravating the country's crisis with his sentencing.
The Gulf state has grappled with sporadic unrest since putting down mass Shia-led protests in 2011.
Sheikh Salman's arrest in December triggered protests across the country.
"The regime is pushing toward aggravation and issued a sentence of four years for the Bahraini opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman," al-Wefaq tweeted.
Bahrain's state news agency BNA said Sheikh Salman had been found guilty of charges "relating to publicly inciting hatred, an act which disturbed public peace, inciting non-compliance with the law and insulting public institutions".
But he was acquitted of inciting political change by force, for which he could have been jailed for life.
The charges relate to a series of statements by Sheikh Salman made in a public speech last year.
His defence lawyer, Abdullah al-Shamlawi, has said that Sheikh Salman can appeal Tuesday's verdict.
Shia-dominated demonstrations against the Sunni monarchy have been continuing sporadically for the past four years.
In 2011, dozens died when the government moved to quash protests. The demonstrators were demanding more rights and an end to discrimination against the majority Shia community by the Sunni royal family.

Bahrain opens a criminal investigation against the country's main opposition party, al-Wefaq.
The Bahraini regime is accusing al-Wefaq of trying to undermine national security by publishing criminal content on its website and Twitter account. The Interior Ministry claims al-Wefaq has been violating Bahraini laws by inciting hatred against the ruling system and circulating false news to undermine civil peace. Al-Wefaq rejects the government's claims of practicing democracy, and says the investigation aims to end legitimate opposition. The party says it is only playing its natural political role as an opponent to government policies. Manama has stepped up its crackdown on al-Wefaq after the group boycotted elections last November. Regime forces have also detained the party’s Secretary General Sheikh Ali Salman on several charges, including seeking regime change.

The Interior Ministry said on Tuesday that Bahrain has opened a criminal investigation of the country's main opposition group, accusing the al-Wefaq group of trying to undermine national security. The Shi'ites, who form a majority in the country, are demanding reforms and a better share in government. It said these violations, published on al-Wefaq's Twitter account and on its website, included "incitement to hatred against the ruling system and circulating false news to undermine civil peace and national security." A rights activist said the move was motivated by political considerations. Earlier this week, an appeals court upheld a six-month prison sentence against a former parliament member and president of al-Wefaq's consultative council.

Bahrain’s largest opposition group, al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, says at least 52 protesters were severely wounded by security forces on the fourth anniversary of the country’s popular uprising.
According to al-Wefaq, 144 peaceful demonstrations were held on February 14 in 57 areas. Security forces suppressed at least 99 rallies. They also arrested at least 41 protesters and raided 18 homes. Bahrain Center for Human Rights also reported that a total of 113 citizens, including 19 children and 2 women, were arrested from February 9th to 15th. The Bahraini uprising was sparked in February 2011. Since then, thousands of protesters have held mass rallies in the Persian Gulf state, demanding the downfall of the Al Khalifah regime and the establishment of a democratically-elected government. The security crackdown on protests has left many people dead.

The Secretary General of Al Wefaq National Islamic Society said he's been detained for democracy and freedom. The cleric made the comments during a court session on Wednesday. He's been charged with inciting hatred and regime change. Bahraini political figures have been banned from attending the court session, but representatives from the U-S, U-K and France were present during the trial. Sheikh Salman's next court session will be held on February 25. He will remain in jail until then. Al-Wefaq says there's no legal or moral justification for Sheikh Salman’s detention or trial. Bahrain has witnessed daily anti-regime protests since Sheikh Salman was arrested in late December 2014. The protests have been brutally suppressed by regime forces.

He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi.[1]
In October 2005, al-Bashir's government negotiated an end to the Second Sudanese Civil War, one of the longest-running and deadliest wars of the 20th century, by granting limited autonomy to Southern Sudan dominated by the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA).[2] Since then, however, there has been a violent conflict in Darfur that has resulted in death tolls between 200,000[3] and 400,000.[4][5][6] During his presidency, there have been several violent struggles between the Janjaweed militia and rebel groups such as the Sudanese Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in the form of guerrilla warfare in the Darfur region. The civil war has displaced[7] over 2.5 million people out of a total population of 6.2 million in Darfur[8] and has created a crisis in the diplomatic relations between Sudan and Chad.[9]
Al-Bashir is a controversial figure both in Sudan and worldwide. In July 2008, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Luis Moreno Ocampo, accused al-Bashir of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur.[10] The court issued an arrest warrant for al-Bashir on 4 March 2009 on counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, but ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him for genocide.[11][12] However, on 12 July 2010, after a lengthy appeal by the prosecution, the Court held that there was indeed sufficient evidence for charges of genocide to be brought and issued a second warrant containing three separate counts. The new warrant, as with the first, will be delivered to the Sudanese government, which is unlikely to execute it.[12] Al-Bashir was the first sitting head of state indicted by the ICC.[12] The court's decision is opposed by the African Union, League of Arab States, Non-Aligned Movement, and the governments of Russia and China.[13][14] A leak from WikiLeaks allegedly reveals that the Sudanese president had embezzled state funds amounting to US$ 9 billion, to which the Lloyd's Bank of England later rejected as "Lloyds insisted it was not aware of any link with Bashir."[15]

Khalil Al-Marzooq is a Bahraini Shi'a politician and former member of the Council of Representatives. During his time in office, he served as first deputy chairman.
On February 14, 2011, Marzooq and 17 other MPs from Al Wefaq, the main Shi'a Islamist opposition party, resigned from their seats in parliament. Following the quelling of the unrest by the government, Marzooq led negotiations with the government in the Bahrain national dialogue, but he and the four other delegates from Al Wefaq withdrew from negotiations on July 17.

Since the beginning of the protests in Bahrain in February 2011, the Al Khalifa regime has continuously oppressed the opposition groups who want to have a representative government.
Four opposition groups, including Al-Wefaq, have recently announced that they plan to boycott the parliamentary election that is scheduled by the government for November 22, saying the results are "fully controlled by the ruling authority".
In this edition of The Debate, Press TV has conducted an interview with Jalal Fairooz, former Bahraini MP from London, and Kamran Bokhari, Mideast and South Asian Affairs expert from Torento, to ask them whether or not the government’s decision for holding a parliamentary election is in the right direction and why the opposition groups have boycotted the vote.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah(HA) Speech on the Birth Anniversary of Prophet Muhammad(S) - January 9, 2015.
Terrorists threaten Islam, Prophet, Quran: Nasrallah
The leader of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah says terrorist groups threaten Islam, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and the holy Quran by committing heinous crime against humanity.
Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah made the remarks during a ceremony marking the birth anniversary Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and his grandson Imam Ja'far al-Sadeq (PBUH) in Beirut's southern suburbs of Dahiyeh on Friday.
“Today I tell you very clearly that those groups pose a threat to countries of the region for today and tomorrow. It became clear that those groups pose a threat to Islam itself as a religion and a mission, to the Messenger and to the Quran,” Nasrallah added.
He said the terrorist groups offend Islam when they "behead thousands of people and kill thousands of people in Yemen for commemorating the Prophet's birth anniversary."
"Those offensives are supported by being easily circulated across several geographical locations, starting from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, to the states that facilitated visas for terrorists to travel into our country," Nasrallah further noted.
Nasrallah’s remarks came after al-Qaeda-affiliated gunmen stormed the Paris headquarters of the satirical weekly, Charlie Hebdo, on Wednesday, gunning down a dozen people, including eight journalists, two police officers, a maintenance worker and a visitor.
France has been known to be among main countries supporting al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists as well as ISIL Takfiri terrorist militants in the Middle East.
At present, ISIL terrorists control some parts of Syria and Iraq. They are engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control and have terrorized and killed people of all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.
Nasrallah also pointed to the peaceful nature of anti-regime protests in Bahrain, noting that recent detention of Bahraini opposition leader, Sheikh Ali Salman, implies that the Bahraini officials have reached a deadlock.
"The people of Bahrain have legitimate rights. They decided to launch peaceful revolution in contrary to other movements in the world. They are shot but they didn't shoot (a bullet). They were killed on roads but they didn't kill anyone, and held no knife…. Leaders of opposition, headed by Sheikh Issa Qassem, as well as al-Wefaq group headed by Sheikh Ali Salman – have agreed upon the peaceful dialogue," the Hezbollah leader added.
Bahraini forces detained Salman on December 28, two days after he was re-elected as al-Wefaq’s leader.
He was remanded in custody on January 5 for two more weeks, pending an investigation into charges, including seeking to change the regime by force.
The arrest has sparked massive public anger in the tiny Persian Gulf sheikdom.
Al-Wefaq has said regime forces use excessive force against peaceful protesters.
Since mid-February 2011, thousands of protesters have been holding held numerous rallies in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

Notable figure in Pro-Democracy & Human Rights Activism during the 2011 protests in Bahrain, and Recipient of the Project on Middle East Democracy’s Leaders for Democracy Award (2012)
Matar Ebrahim Mater is a well-known political activist who served as Bahrain’s youngest-elected member of parliament, representing its largest constituency. In February 2012, along with eighteen members from his al-Wefaq political party, he resigned from parliament in protest of the Bahraini regime’s crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.
During the February 14 uprisings, he encouraged youth participation and informed the media and foreign officials of ongoing developments, actions that later made him a government target. Mr. Matar continues to speak out on behalf of the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain and has testified before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission of the United States Congress.
The author of several articles and book chapters on prospects for democratic reform in Bahrain, Mr. Matar was awarded the Leaders of Democracy Award by the Project on Middle East.
