Vicente Samuel Saldivar García (born May 3, 1943 in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico, died July 18, 1985) was a Mexican boxer in the Featherweight division and was a part of the 1960 Mexican Olympic team. He was a former WBC and a two-time WBA Featherweight Champion. Saldivar has frequently been ranked amongst the greatest in the history of that division by many noted boxing historians and critics. Vicente fought in front of the fourth largest crowd ever, 90,000 in Estadio Azteca, and has also regularly been cited as one of the finest left-handed fighters of all time.
Saldivar was born in one of the many poor quarters of Mexico City and is one of seven children. He used to get in fights on the streets and in school, so his father decided to channel the misguided energy into boxing. Like many other Mexicans his father was a big boxing fan, so it was a logical move. Vicente was taught by Jose Moreno, a veteran trainer of a near by Mexico City boxing gym.
As a southpaw, Vicente Saldivar was a dynamic fighter in the ring. He could box or brawl, and often softened opponents with a brutal body attack. Among his greatest assets was his stamina; he scored seven knockouts after the 7th round. Saldivar had an unusually slow heart and pulse rate, which he claimed was the secret of the phenomenal pace he was able to maintain in the ring.

Howard was known for his right handed power back in his early day's so the day of the fateful accident was essentially the day Howard's boxing career came to an end. Well that's what everyone assumed accept Howard, who completely changed the way he boxed and went on remarkably to become Champion of Britain, Champion of Europe and Champion of the world! The story of Howard Winstone's boxing career alone is a remarkable one, but there was far more to Howard than just his boxing career, in Howard there was an incredible burning passion, a passion to overcome all the odds, Howard Winstone was distilled with something quite remarkable, Howard Winstone was destined for greatness. Plot: Howard Winstone is a legendary Welsh boxing figure that has been largely forgotten by the public of today. In the film 'The Fifteenth', his skills as a fighter are once more brought to the forefront of our imaginations, and the changing face of Wales, subtly displayed. A young boy overhears three lads remarking on an old man in the corner, that he used to be a figurehead of the boxing world. The boy inquisitively approaches and is about to question the man, when he notices the lack of fingers on the supposed boxers right hand. The boy loudly dismisses the lads claims, much to the amusement of the old man, who invites the boy to take a seat and listen to his tale. Back to the fifties we go and the training of one of the fastest and most powerful boxers of the time; Howard Winstone. The boxer working hard in one of the local factories in Merthyr suffers the agony of the loss of the tips of his fingers in a freak accident, just as he is being tipped for great things in the boxing world. The boy listens with excitement as one man's determination spans a decade of classic boxing, seeing the fighter evolve in to one of the most feared fighters in Europe and eventually the world. The poignancy in the script is drawn through the young lad, who by trying to get served alcohol at an age too young, has seen the errors of his ways by looking in to the past - a thing that we as a society seem to be doing too little these days - remembering our roots and the mistakes of our elders. The films weaves through Welsh culture and sporting achievements with passion and enthusiasm, with strong imagery and both intimate and lavish scenes; highlighting the rise and fall of one of Wales' greatest boxers.
