Descubren un cenote debajo de pirámide en Chichén Itzá

México, 13 ago (EFEMEX).- Investigadores de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) descubrieron que la pirámide de Kukulcán, en la zona arqueológica de Chichén Itzá (península de Yucatán), está construida sobre un cenote.
El cuerpo de agua fue detectado mediante una tomografía eléctrica en tercera dimensión, al partir de la cual los expertos estiman que mide entre 30 y 35 metros en su parte más larga y la profundidad es de alrededor de 20 metros.
“Debajo de la pirámide detectamos un cuerpo acuoso que está rodeado de piedra caliza, y esto indica que es muy posible que esté asentada sobre un cenote”, dijo el investigador del Instituto de Geofísica (IGf) de la UNAM René Chávez.

Every spring and autumn equinox thousands of people gather at the base of "El Castillo"—the pyramid at the heart of one of the ancient America's most famous and evocative cities: Chichen Itza. They come to marvel at the skill of ancient astronomers in aligning their structure in such a way that the sun casts a diamond-back shadow of a giant serpent down one of its staircases. They also come to peer into the depths of the great sinkhole known as the "Well of Sacrifice," and wander through the expanses of the "Great Ballcourt," the largest in the New World. Chichen Itza is a truly remarkable place, but the story behind it has hardly been told. There is a hidden history to these ruins and the biggest secret of all is that this great Maya metropolis is not very Maya at all. To understand the city properly it will be necessary to debunk the myths and take a journey into the symbolism behind its every carved stone—revealing its true designers and their ancient purpose.

Chichen Itza ((
/tʃiːˈtʃɛn iːˈtsɑː/,Spanish: Chichén Itzá [tʃiˈtʃen iˈtsa], from Yucatec Maya: Chi'ch'èen Ìitsha' [tɕʰɨɪʼtɕʼeːn˧˩ iː˧˩tsʰaʲ]; "at the mouth of the well of the Itza"), was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya civilization. The archaeological site is located in the municipality of Tinum, in the Mexican state of Yucatán.
Chichen Itza was a major focal point in the northern Maya lowlands from the Late Classic (c.600–900 AD) through the Terminal Classic (c.800–900) and into the early portion of the Early Postclassic period (c.900–1200). The site exhibits a multitude of architectural styles, reminiscent of styles seen in central Mexico and of the Puuc and Chenes styles of the northern Maya lowlands. The presence of central Mexican styles was once thought to have been representative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view the presence of these non-Maya styles more as the result of cultural diffusion.
Chichen Itza was one of the largest Maya cities and it was likely to have been one of the mythical great cities, or Tollans, referred to in later Mesoamerican literature. The city may have had the most diverse population in the Maya world, a factor that could have contributed to the variety of architectural styles at the site.

Juan Villoro (Mexico City, 1956) is a Mexican writer and journalist. He has been well known among intellectual circles in Mexico, Latin America and Spain for years, but his success among the readers grew since receiving the Herralde Prize for his novel El testigo.
Juan Villoro received his bachelor's degree in sociology from the Metropolitan Autonomous University, Iztapalapa campus. As a rock music fan, he was the DJ for the radio program "El lado oscuro de la luna" (the Spanish translation of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd) from 1977 until 1981. He was then made the cultural attaché to Berlin in the then German Democratic Republic.
For three decades, Villoro has produced a steady output of articles for various Mexican periodicals, concentrating in such areas as sports, rock, cinema, literature and travel. Palmeras de la brisa rapida: un viaje a Yucatán ("Palm Trees of the Rapid Breeze: A Journey to Yucatan") 1989 is an account of his travels in a part of Mexico known for its Mayan culture. His first novel was El disparo de argón ("The Shot of Argon"), published in 1991. Los once de la tribu ("The Eleven of the Tribe"), published in 1995, collects many of his best short, non-fiction essays and interviews. The title refers to the number of people on an international football team. He covers a wide range of topics, including Andy Warhol, the Rolling Stones, the television series Dallas, the absurdities of publishing children's literature in the United States and an interview with Jane Fonda.

México, 13 ago (EFEMEX).- Investigadores de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) descubrieron que la pirámide de Kukulcán, en la zona arqueológica de Chichén Itzá (península de Yucatán), está construida sobre un cenote.
El cuerpo de agua fue detectado mediante una tomografía eléctrica en tercera dimensión, al partir de la cual los expertos estiman que mide entre 30 y 35 metros en su parte más larga y la profundidad es de alrededor de 20 metros.
“Debajo de la pirámide detectamos un cuerpo acuoso que está rodeado de piedra caliza, y esto indica que es muy posible que esté asentada sobre un cenote”, dijo el investigador del Instituto de Geofísica (IGf) de la UNAM René Chávez.

Every spring and autumn equinox thousands of people gather at the base of "El Castillo"—the pyramid at the heart of one of the ancient America's most famous and evocative cities: Chichen Itza. They come to marvel at the skill of ancient astronomers in aligning their structure in such a way that the sun casts a diamond-back shadow of a giant serpent down one of its staircases. They also come to peer into the depths of the great sinkhole known as the "Well of Sacrifice," and wander through the expanses of the "Great Ballcourt," the largest in the New World. Chichen Itza is a truly remarkable place, but the story behind it has hardly been told. There is a hidden history to these ruins and the biggest secret of all is that this great Maya metropolis is not very Maya at all. To understand the city properly it will be necessary to debunk the myths and take a journey into the symbolism behind its every carved stone—revealing its true designers and their ancient purpose.

Known as the Pearl Of The Pacific, Acapulco is a world famous holiday resort of the rich and famous where luxury liners dock each day and endless golden sands beckon a swim under the Caribbean sun. Each evening, the famous cliff jumpers of Acapulco congregate when, from a height of 42 metres, they jump fearlessly from the top of the La Quebrada Cliff into the narrow bay below. In the legendary ruins of Palenque, numerous monuments of the Maya culture can be found such as a palace, and several pyramids and temples. From the air, there is a unique view of the lush growth of the impenetrable forests around Palenque, and of Mexico’s most beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul. Chichen Itza is thought to have been built by the Mayas around 450 AD and over 500 years later the fighting TOLTEKEN took over the deserted city, which led to two hundred years of prosperity. The archaeological zone of Kabah, that means "The Powerful Hand" is 100 Km south of Merida and although is small and it´s still in reconstruction process, is famous for the beautiful building called the Codz Poop, decorated with hundreds of mask of the rain god called Chaac. The name of the building in Yucatecan Maya means "Rolled Mat". Also famous is its elegant arch that marked the road that connected with Uxmal and has the advantage that is not as crowded as Chichen Itza, Tulum or Uxmal.

From Chichen Itza we had lunch in Valladolid and headed to the Cenotes Dzitnup limestine sinkholes ... We did enjoy Chichen Itza, and its the history is fascinating, but if time were short, we would choose Uxmal before Chichen Itza any time....
