Mexico City Hosts International Book Fair
With over 700 publishers, the International Book Fair in Mexico City brings the love of reading to thousands of enthusiastic citizens in the course of a week. Even so, a government survey shows that the average Mexican citizen above 18 years old only reads four books a year. Some say that this is not due to a lack of interest, but to the high cost of books. The access to reading materials and cult

Spanish/Nat
A Mexican woman condemned to 50 years in prison as part of an infamous gang branded the "narcosatanicos" (Satanic drug dealers) has written a book detailing her life of crime.
Sara Aldrete Villarreal was sentenced in 1994 for her part in a series of ritualistic murders committed each time a drug deal was successfully carried out.
She and her fellow murderers achieved notoriety during their trial when it was discovered they practised human sacrifices, black magic, voodoo and even cannibalism.
Sara Aldrete Villareal was 24 years old when her brutal life of crime first came to light.
Already she had become one of a gang of murderers so cruel that their ensuing trial shocked the Mexican and American public.
On Monday, much of her past was exposed once again, this time, in a book written by Aldrete herself.
It is six years since her imprisonment but a lifetime awaits her behind bars.
The book details her partnership with Adolfo De Jesus Constanzo - a Cuban Italian who used Aldrete to lure victims to their deaths.
Fourteen in total were murdered, many of them suffered ritual dismemberment and most of them were finally buried at a ranch in Matamoros state.
SOUNDBITE:(Spanish)
"The reporters have asked me why I waited 11 years to write this book. Eleven years that I've spent in prison. I've told my story to whoever wanted to listen to it. I've told my truth, every time I was in front of a microphone, and also when I was imprisoned by the suffocating hands of torturers."
SUPER CAPTION: Sara Maria Aldrete Villarreal, convicted member of NarcoSatanicos gang
Aldrete told reporters Monday she was innocent of the crimes for which she has been sentenced and that the book was her way of stating the truth.
Her publicists say the book conveys the pain and anguish that Aldrete now suffers for her past and that readers will be able to cast their own verdict on her guilt.
But critics were quick to point out the close families of the 14 victims of this gang would find the book offensive.
Among them, the parents of Mark Kilroy, a student at Austin University in Texas who was captured and later murdered.
It was his body which led to the arrest of the so-called narco-Satanicos.

Because comic books contain such visual story lines, artists and writers have had a difficult time translating them into braille, until recently when creators of a braille comic book in Mexico City, Mexico have released their latest work.
Writer and illustrator Jorge Grajales and Bernardo Fernandez have created "Sensus: The Universe of His Eyes," which narrates the adventures of an astronaut who crash lands on a planet inhabited by creatures with no eyes.
The astronaut loses his sight but aliens around him teach him how to see the world using other senses.
Funds from the sale of the 16-page comic book will help purchase spectacles for more than 1.5 million Mexican visually impaired schoolchildren.
Luis Eduardo, who was taught braille at the School of the International Committee for the Blind, a non-profit assistance organisation in Mexico City, was excited to be able to read the comic:
"It was very exciting, to know there is a comic book in braille, that there are new things for us, people with disabilities," he said.
Eduardo de lao of the International Committee for the Blind said more books like this one are needed.
"For me, it's very useful because it improves my skills in order to continue reading," he said.
Bernardo Fernandez, who is also visually impaired, said the purpose of the comic book was to raise awareness for the blind:
"This is to create awareness among the population who do not have disabilities or visual disadvantages with regards to the challenges that people face every day. And, finally, it's for social action; the sale of each one of these copies will go towards spectacles, a set of glasses for low-income children with visual handicaps," he said.
We would love to hear your thoughts about the project, and to also learn about other projects like this around the world.

The access to reading materials and culture as a whole may be even more restricted in the future, given that the federal government proposes to cut US$1.9 billion for funding culture in 2016. Clayton Conn reports for teleSUR.

Travel video about destination Mexico.
Mexico, land of the Maya and Aztec, temples and beaches and with a population of twenty-six million the bubbling metropolis of Mexico City is a maze of streets, flat roofs, skyscrapers and parks. Earthquakes, floods and civil wars created this ‘City Of The Aztecs’. Templo Mayor, the main temple of the Aztecs, lies in the centre of the city, in the large main square, Zocalo. The magnificent Catedral Metropolitana with its massive dimensions and fine stone masonry dominates the square, with equal prominence being given to the Palacinio Nacional, governmental seat of the Mexican President. In 1519, when the Spanish conquerors reached Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec kingdom, they discovered a lagoon paradise with floating gardens, Xochimilco, a labyrinth of lakes and canals, which today can be explored by boat. Known as the Pearl Of The Pacific, Acapulco is a world famous holiday resort of the rich and famous where luxury liners dock each day and endless golden sands beckon a swim under the Caribbean sun. Each evening, the famous cliff jumpers of Acapulco congregate when, from a height of 42 metres, they jump fearlessly from the top of the La Quebrada Cliff into the narrow bay below. In the legendary ruins of Palenque, numerous monuments of the Maya culture can be found such as a palace, and several pyramids and temples. From the air, there is a unique view of the lush growth of the impenetrable forests around Palenque, and of Mexico’s most beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul. Chichen Itza is thought to have been built by the Mayas around 450 AD and over 500 years later the fighting TOLTEKEN took over the deserted city, which led to two hundred years of prosperity. Located in the north, Tequila is situated at the foot of the likewise named volcano and is world famous because it is here that the Mexican national drink is produced. But Mexico is much more than a drink…it is a feast for all the senses!

Travel video about destination Mexico City in Mexico.
Mexico City is a vivid metropolis and cosmopolitan city situated on a plateau in the central highlands at an altitude of 2, 286 metres, where the food is spicy and the Tequila flows freely! The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings.
Until the Spanish conquest, the Templo Mayor was the setting of coronations and human sacrifice. The remains of the walls within which thousands of priests once lived are only a few steps from the buildings of the country's former Spanish conquerors.
Construction of the country's largest cathedral, the Catedral Metropolitana, took 250 years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-Classical design. Spanish administrative buildings and private houses in the heart of the city have replaced the temples of ancient Mexico and has resulted in a synthesis of both old and new architectural styles.
An elevator ascends the Torre Latino America, an earthquake-proof tower that was built in 1958. A viewing platform provides a wonderful panoramic view that includes the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Juárez Monument.
Located 50 kilometres from Mexico City are the ancient remains of Teotihuacan that was once a centre of trade, art and ritual ceremonies. At its zenith in 500 A.D., it was as large as Rome and its Sun Pyramid is one of the greatest building achievements of ancient times. In 1988 ,Unesco attributed this complex as being 'one of the most important cultural centres of mankind'.
The author Pablo Neruda once said: 'No other land on Earth possesses such remarkable human profoundness than Mexico and its inhabitants'. For surprises, sights and history galore, Mexico has to be at the top of the list!

Surrounded by the warm waters of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is famed for its sunshine, history, and wild nightlife. Come to this former Mexican fishing village turned resort town to join legions of fellow sun worshippers – just don’t forget to pack sunscreen.
Your Cancun tour should stop at the Acuario Interactivo, where you can meet mariachi-singing dolphins and other friendly sealife. Explore the vast historical offerings of Cancun by heading to the Yucatan interior, where you’ll find ancient Mayan cities available to tour. A day trip to Chichen Itza, one of the world’s Seven Modern Wonders, is another must. Wander through its ancient streets and take in the temples, an observatory, and even a sporting arena.
At sunset, your Cancun sightseeing will come to a dazzling conclusion amid the wild nightlife. Watch shows, go dancing, attend parties, and make sure you’ve got your camera out. It all begins anew the next day; morning in Cancun means more time to make sun-drenched memories that will last a lifetime.

This book is the first comprehensive and systematic English-language treatment of Mexico's economic history to appear in nearly forty years. Drawing on several years of in-depth research, Juan Carlos Moreno-Brid and Jaime Ros, two of the foremost experts on the Mexican economy, examine Mexico's current development policies and problems from a historical perspective. They review long-term trends in the Mexican economy and analyze past episodes of radical shifts in development strategy and in the role of markets and the state. This book provides an overview of Mexico's economic development since Independence that compares the successive periods of stagnation and growth that alternately have characterized Mexico's economic history. It gives special attention to developments since 1940, and it presents a re-evaluation of Mexico's development policies during the State-led industrialization period from 1940 to 1982 as well as during the more recent market reform process. This reevaluation is critical of the dominant trend in economic literature and is revisionist in arguing that, in particular, the market reforms undertaken by successive Mexican governments since 1983 have not addressed the fundamental obstacles to economic growth. Development and Growth in the Mexican Economy also details the country's pioneering role in launching NAFTA, its membership in the OECD, and its radical macroeconomic reforms. Carefully argued and meticulously researched, the book presents a wide-ranging, authoritative study that not only pinpoints problems, but also suggests solutions for removing obstacles to economic stability and pointing the Mexican economy toward the road to recovery.

Donald Trump News Conference: New book 'Crippled America', Answers Questions about Presidential race, Jeb Bush, Rubio Donald Trump Press Conference 11/3/2015: New Book and 2016 Presidential Race Q & A Donald Trump FULL: election, Book "Crippled America", Obama is a Horrible president 11/3/15 3/11/15 Donald Trump Press Conference 11/3/2015: New Book and 2016 Presidential Race Q & A
Republican 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump held a news conference today to talk about his new book, Crippled America. Trump's latest book, 'Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again,' is on shelves. NEW YORK (WABC) --
Donald Trump is out with a new book that boasts success stories, but offers few details on how he would implement his policy goals as president.
On Tuesday, at 9 a.m., "Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again," was for sale in the Trump Tower Atrium. There was a three-book limit per customer. At noon, Trump, the billionaire businessman, former reality TV star and Republican White House-hopeful, planned to sign books at the Trump Store in Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.
The book speaks directly to voters, making the case that Trump has the experience and business savvy to accomplish things that traditional, all-talk, no-action politicians can't. It comes as Trump is continuing to adjust to a new phase of the campaign in which the once undisputed front-runner is now facing heightened competition from a number of his GOP rivals.
"This book is designed to give the reader a better understanding of me and my ideas for our future," Trump writes. "I'm a really nice guy, but I'm also passionate and determined to make our country great again."
Trump's cover features him with furrowed brows and a deep scowl, in keeping with his often irascible demeanor. "I'm sitting there with an angry face and everybody said that's really got to be the picture because the book is explaining all that's the wrong in the country," Trump said Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America."
And it is signature braggadocios Trump, complete with a 14-page biography and a list of some of the properties he has developed, managed and licensed over the years. The book also includes a note declaring that Trump's net worth has increased since he launched his campaign.
The book includes chapters on favored Trump subjects including the dangers of illegal immigration and his commitment to Second Amendment rights for gun owners. And it delves into more details in some areas, particularly on how he plans to force Mexico to pay for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, his signature campaign promise.
"We could increase the various border fees we charge. We could increase the fees on temporary visas. We could even impound remittance payments derived from illegal wages," Trump offers. "Foreign governments could tell their embassies to start helping, otherwise they risk troubled relations with America."

Reed, México insurgente is based on the book, Insurgent Mexico (1914), by the US journalist John Reed, who was a war correspondent and committed socialist until his early death at the age of 33. His most famous book, Ten Days That Shook the World (1919), is an eyewitness account of events in Petrograd in November 1917 during the Russian Revolution. Set in late 1913 and 1914, Insurgent Mexico is an episodic account of Reed's experiences during the Mexican Revolution. He describes his journey across the US-Mexican border territory into Mexico; his adventures and experiences accompanying Villa's army as they prepare for and fight in a decisive battle in Torreon; the funeral of Abraham González, a Villista leader; the notorious case of a British citizen Benton who was killed in the Revolution; his interview with Villa; an account of the short lived presidency of Venustiano Carranza; and the nightlife and his gambling escapades in Mexican casinos. Reed's is an energetic, subjective account of battle, which revels in the adventure of war. In the text it is evident that he is eager to get to the frontline of attack as witness and comrade to the men. His irrepressible character and spirit of adventure is evident in Insurgent Mexico, as too is his youth. Born in 1887, he was only twenty-seven when he wrote Insurgent Mexico.
In Reed, México insurgente the camera is observational, telling the story of Reed's coming of age as a revolutionary, not from his point of view but as a participant/observer. The film is structured around the battle of Torreon, the funeral of Abraham González, and Reed's meetings with Villa and Obregon. Thereby the narrative sticks to the details related to the conflict and attendant politics. Interestingly, Leduc chose to omit Reed's youthful exuberance and touristic detail evident in many sections of the book, in particular, those set in the borderland casinos, which take away from the immediacy of war.
Reed, México insurgente has been celebrated as a classic and an exemplary film from an experimental period of Mexican film.
