Dempsey said ISIS fighters have been putting pressure on the outskirts of the city “and in fact, into the city itself.” That leads him to believe “it may be about to fall.”

Guatemala's new president has promised a fresh democratic future for his battered country.
Alvaro Arzu is the third popularly elected president to take power since military rule ended in 1986.
At his inauguration ceremony the new president vowed to control the military and tackle Guatemala's most severe problems: crime, poverty and a 35-year-old civil war.
Guatemala's new president- Alvaro Arzu- was inaugurated Sunday in a ceremony in Guatemala City.
Arzu is the third democratically elected president to take power since military rule ended in 1986.
The new president will replace Ramiro de Leon Carpio who was appointed by the Congress in 1993 after his predecessor Jorge Serrano tried unsuccessfully to seize absolute power.
Wearing the white and sky-blue presidential sash Arzu urged his countrymen to work hard for Guatemala's future.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"And we've lived a recent history of internal conflict which has divided us filled us with pain. It is a big challenge and a difficult road and that's why we must make a bigger effort and develop our capabilities, our values and our strengths in order to advance."
SUPER CAPTION: Alvaro Arzu, President of Guatemala
Arzu- a former Guatemala City mayor- narrowly defeated lawyer Alfonso Portillo in the January 7 runoff.
His pro-business Advanced National Party will hold 43 of 80 seats in the legislature.
Arzu has vowed to control the military, which remains influential and has long been blamed for the majority of Guatemala's human rights abuses.
He has also promised to tackle Guatemala's most daunting problems: widespread crime, severe poverty and a 35-year-old civil war which has cost at least 120-thousand lives.
The new president will face a difficult challenge.
But with a legislative majority and a lack of allegiance to the military many hope Arzu will carry out his promises to sweep away the bootprint of prior dictatorships.

OTI in Transition: A Brief Oral History (film)
On October 21, 2014, CSIS and USAID/DCHA's Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) will host a major event, Advances and Challenges in Political Transitions. In honor of OTI's 20th anniversary, this conference will feature more than 40 experts and senior officials focusing on the challenges and opportunities of working in conflicts, crises, and political transitions. What will new conflicts look like, region by region? What role will extremism, organized crime, and chaotic violence play? What contributions will youth, women, the private sector, and technology make to prevention, mitigation, and recovery? And what tools, approaches, resources, and support will be needed to build more resilient societies in the coming years?

Hispanic leaders want GOP field to condemn Trump's 'idiocy'
Hispanic leaders are bristling at the largely tepid response by Republican presidential candidates to Donald Trump's characterization of Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers.
Several 2016 contenders have brushed off Trump's comments while others have ignored them. Marco Rubio, a Florida senator who is Hispanic, denounced them as "not just offensive and inaccurate, but also divisive," after declining for two weeks to address the matter directly. Another Hispanic in the race, Ted Cruz, said Trump is "terrific," ''brash" and "speaks the truth."
It's an uncomfortable moment for Republicans, who want more votes from the surging Latino population.
And it could be a costly moment if more candidates don't go beyond their Donald-will-be-Donald response and condemn him directly, said Alfonso Aguilar, a Republican who leads the American Principles Project's Latino Partnership.
"The time has come for the candidates to distance themselves from Trump and call his comments what they are: ludicrous, baseless and insulting," Aguilar said. "Sadly, it hurts the party with Hispanic voters. It's a level of idiocy I haven't seen in a long time."
So far, Trump has paid less of a political price than a commercial one.

The leading Hispanic television network, Univision, has backed out of televising the Miss USA pageant, a joint venture between Trump and NBC, which also cut ties with Trump. On Wednesday, the Macy's department store chain, which carried a Donald Trump menswear line, said it was ending its relationship with him. Other retailers are facing pressure to follow suit.
On Friday, the NASCAR motorsports series said it will not hold its season-ending awards ceremony at the Trump National Doral Miami. The CEO of a top NASCAR sponsor, Camping World's Marcus Lemonis, had said he would not participate in the awards ceremony if it were held at a property owned by Trump, whom he criticized for "recent and ongoing blatantly bigoted and racist comments ... in regards to immigrants."
In his speech last month marking his entry into the Republican race, Trump said Mexican immigrants are "bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
The businessman has refused to back down, although he insists his remarks were misconstrued.
"My statements have been contorted to seem racist and discriminatory," he wrote in a message to supporters on Thursday. "What I want is for legal immigrants to not be unfairly punished because others are coming into America illegally, flooding the labor market and not paying taxes." His original comments, though, did not make a distinction between Mexicans who came to U.S. legally and those here illegally.

His rhetoric may resonate with some of the Republican Party's most passionate voters, who have long viewed illegal immigration as one of the nation's most pressing problems. But the 2016 contest brings opportunity for the party to make inroads with Hispanics, with several Latino candidates and a former Florida governor, Jeb Bush, who has deep Latino ties and speaks Spanish and hasn't been shy about using it in the campaign.
Even so, Bush has said little more about Trump's comments than that they were "wrong."
"Maybe we'll have a chance to have an honest discussion about it onstage," Bush said last weekend while campaigning in Nevada, referring to Republican presidential debates.
Rev. Gabriel Salguero, president of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, is paying keen attention to how the candidates respond to Trump's "xenophobic rhetoric."
"We're listening very, very closely, not just what candidates say but what they don't say — the sins of commission and the sins of omission," he said.

—Cruz said he likes Trump and thinks NBC "is engaging in political correctness" in breaking ties with him.
—Rubio said the next president "needs to be someone who brings Americans together — not someone who continues to divide."

The nation’s top military leader said he is concerned that ISIS could soon take the key city of Kobani located on Syria’s border with Turkey.
“I am fearful that Kobani will fall,” Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told ABC News’ Martha Raddatz in an exclusive interview.
Dempsey said ISIS fighters have been putting pressure on the outskirts of the city “and in fact, into the city itself.” That leads him to believe “it may be about to fall.”
For the past two weeks ISIS fighters have pressed to capture the Kurdish city, forcing thousands of residents to flee into Turkey.
If ISIS should take the city from Kurdish defenders it would be in control of most of the northern Syrian border area.
Gen. Dempsey said he spoke with his Turkish counterpart today to get an update on the situation in Kobani.
“They've got forces on their side of the border that will prevent ISIL from making any incursions into Turkey,” said Dempsey, using an alternate name for ISIS. “But, of course, ISIL is smart enough not to do that.”
In recent days the Turkish army has positioned as many as 20 tanks on its side of the border across from Kobani.

Earthquakes, floods and civil wars created this ‘City Of The Aztecs’. Templo Mayor, the main temple of the Aztecs, lies in the centre of the city, in the large main square, Zocalo. The magnificent Catedral Metropolitana with its massive dimensions and fine stone masonry dominates the square, with equal prominence being given to the Palacinio Nacional, governmental seat of the Mexican President. Mexico City is a vivid metropolis and cosmopolitan city situated on a plateau in the central highlands at an altitude of 2, 286 metres, where the food is spicy and the Tequila flows freely! The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings.
Until the Spanish conquest, the Templo Mayor was the setting of coronations and human sacrifice. The remains of the walls within which thousands of priests once lived are only a few steps from the buildings of the country's former Spanish conquerors.

If you ever go to the Mayan archeological site “Palenque” you can’t miss this natural beauty. Its turquoise color is caused by carbonated salts and minerals. Just to throw an interested fact, Chiapas has 9 different ecosystems, it is not purely jungle. It is amazing when you are driving up a mountain you can see the warm jungle transforming into cold woods.

Riviera Maya , also known as the Mayan Riviera, is a tourism district following the coastal Highway 307 which parallels the Caribbean coastline of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. This district historically started at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum, although the towns of Puerto Morelos situated to the north and between Playa del Carmen and Cancun as well as the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto situated 40 kilometres (25 mi) to the south of Tulum are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor.

Travel video about destination Mexico.
Mexico, land of the Maya and Aztec, temples and beaches and with a population of twenty-six million the bubbling metropolis of Mexico City is a maze of streets, flat roofs, skyscrapers and parks. In 1519, when the Spanish conquerors reached Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec kingdom, they discovered a lagoon paradise with floating gardens, Xochimilco, a labyrinth of lakes and canals, which today can be explored by boat. Known as the Pearl Of The Pacific, Acapulco is a world famous holiday resort of the rich and famous where luxury liners dock each day and endless golden sands beckon a swim under the Caribbean sun. Each evening, the famous cliff jumpers of Acapulco congregate when, from a height of 42 metres, they jump fearlessly from the top of the La Quebrada Cliff into the narrow bay below. In the legendary ruins of Palenque, numerous monuments of the Maya culture can be found such as a palace, and several pyramids and temples. From the air, there is a unique view of the lush growth of the impenetrable forests around Palenque, and of Mexico’s most beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul. Chichen Itza is thought to have been built by the Mayas around 450 AD and over 500 years later the fighting TOLTEKEN took over the deserted city, which led to two hundred years of prosperity. Located in the north, Tequila is situated at the foot of the likewise named volcano and is world famous because it is here that the Mexican national drink is produced. But Mexico is much more than a drink…it is a feast for all the senses!

Travel video about destination Mexico City in Mexico.
Construction of the country's largest cathedral, the Catedral Metropolitana, took 250 years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-Classical design. Spanish administrative buildings and private houses in the heart of the city have replaced the temples of ancient Mexico and has resulted in a synthesis of both old and new architectural styles.
An elevator ascends the Torre Latino America, an earthquake-proof tower that was built in 1958. A viewing platform provides a wonderful panoramic view that includes the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Juárez Monument.
Located 50 kilometres from Mexico City are the ancient remains of Teotihuacan that was once a centre of trade, art and ritual ceremonies. At its zenith in 500 A.D., it was as large as Rome and its Sun Pyramid is one of the greatest building achievements of ancient times. In 1988 ,Unesco attributed this complex as being 'one of the most important cultural centres of mankind'.
The author Pablo Neruda once said: 'No other land on Earth possesses such remarkable human profoundness than Mexico and its inhabitants'. For surprises, sights and history galore, Mexico has to be at the top of the list!

Mexico Riviera (Mexico) Vacation Travel Wild Video Guide
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula may well be where the world as we know it began. It’s here that a meteor 10 kilometres across impacted with the earth 65 million years ago; The meteor hit in a shallow ocean bringing about a change in climate that caused the extinction of two thirds of the Earths species including all the Dinosaurs.

Travel Tips: 7 Places in Mexico you did not know even existed and other travel tips
Travel Tips: 7 Places in Mexico you did not know even existed and other travel tips.
Agua azul waterfalls.- This wonder is located in the beautiful state of Chiapas right in the middle of the Lacandon Jungle.
Marieta Islands.- Located just a few minutes boat ride away, called by locals “Hidden Beach”. Catch your ride from Punta Mita, a town a few minutes away from Puerto Vallarta. Only look for authorized tours, they are the only one allowed to get there. Actually the boats do not take all the way. Getting there is a little adventure. Once you get out the boat, you have to swim through a tunnel, the price is the amazing “hidden beach” that is breathtaking.
Sumidero Canyon.- This is another wonder from the state of Chiapas. It is just minutes away from Tuxtla Gutierrez, the main city and capital for the region, and main airport. So as soon as you drop off the plane you can go directly to this magnificent site.
Montebello Lakes.- Within the Montebello Lakes National Park, also located in Chiapas you can find a natural complex composed of beautiful turquoise coloured lakes that is not considered a natural paradise for the color alone, but the entire surroundings. The beautiful lakes are just the cherry on the pie.
Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.- This site is located in the state of Michoacan. It is a protected ecosystem in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. Every year millions of Monarch butterflies make a stop in their annual migration this place, offering a natural spectacle like no other when millions of these creatures cover trees and the rest of the landscape and dye the view in its beautiful orange.
The Cave of Swallows.- It is 376m (1233 ft) deep. This is considered by many the most beautiful vertical cave in the world. As time goes by and more people know of this place, skydivers are some of the tourism attracted to this place. It is the home of a bird species known as swifts often confused with swallows. This is where this place gets its name. To descend down this cave means getting surrounded in a world with different rules, especially if you get to see the magnificent sunrise when thousands of swifts fly out the cave in a spiral manner, spectacular view.
Las Pozas Garden of Xilitla. - This man made wonder is found in the state of San Luis Potosi in the middle of waterfalls and natural pool. Many say this surreal garden evokes the Garden of Eden. Although this place may look like the ruins of some ancient civilization, it is actually the art work of the eccentric British millionaire, Edward James. He actually arrives to Mexico with the idea of building a Garden of Eden and handpicked himself this spot near the town of Xilitla, San Luis Potosi.

The most important places to visit in Riviera Maya are: Chichen Itza (the world famous Mayan ruins with thousands of years of history are one of the most visited sites in the world), Playa del Carmen, Tulum (outside of Cancun, a unique site. You can go for a swim in turquoise waters and visit the famous ruins of Mayan civilization), Xcaret, Xplor and many more.

"Comedian Katt Williams on Saturday partly walked back an apology for making insensitive remarks to a Mexican member of his audience, telling CNN that he is not sorry for what he said, but apologizes to anyone who thought he was being hateful. "I meant what I said and I said what I meant," Williams said, referring to his back-and-forth with a heckler during a performance a week ago. A written statement apologizing for the remarks had been released by his publicist on his behalf this week, but the comedian said that it didn't come from him. Video of the exchange, delivered during a performance at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, was posted online. Williams singled out a man seated near the stage and asked him if he was Mexican." - CNN

Mexico's Federal Police are being accused of another extrajudicial killing. The current issue of Proceso magazine disclosed through autopsy reports and accounts by dozens of eyewitness that federal police killed 16 residents of Apatzingan, Michoacan on January 6. The residents, members of a local Self-Defense Militia that had the green light from authorities to hunt down drug kingpins in the area, were in the city square demanding funds for their work. Authorities initially claimed the deaths occurred as a result of cross-fire or friendly fire. The Apatzingan killings, together with other recent high profile cases such as the enforced disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa students or the military murder of 22 civilians in the municipality of Tlatlaya, State of Mexico, has promoted the government's National Security Commission to order an investigation to determine whether law enforcement is using undue force.

Among 2016 contenders:
—New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called Trump's comments "wholly inappropriate." But in a subsequent radio interview, he said Trump is "a really wonderful guy (who's) always been a good friend."
—Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry said: "I don't think Donald Trump's remarks reflect the Republican Party."
—Cruz said he likes Trump and thinks NBC "is engaging in political correctness" in breaking ties with him.
—Rubio said the next president "needs to be someone who brings Americans together — not someone who continues to divide."

Travel video about destination Mexico.
Mexico, land of the Maya and Aztec, temples and beaches and with a population of twenty-six million the bubbling metropolis of Mexico City is a maze of streets, flat roofs, skyscrapers and parks.
