An old school documentary from 1974, about bomb disposal (EOD) teams, their training, and the problems of maintaining a family life in one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. It follows 3 Ammunition Technical Officers (ATOs) in the British Army in the cold war era.
Living A Dangerous Life: Bomb Disposal Expert Documentary - Documentary Channel
Bomb disposal is the process by which hazardous eruptive tools are rendered protected. Bomb fingertip is an all encompassing term to describe the separate, but related functions in the military industries of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD), and the public safety functions of Public Safety Bomb Disposal (PSBD) and the Bomb Squad.
"Bomb disposal" does not include the remediation of soils polluted with eruptive materials.
The initial professional private bomb squad was established by Sir Vivian Dering Majendie. As a Major in the Royal Artillery Majendie checked out a surge on 2 October 1874 in the Regent's Canal when the barge 'Til bury', lugging 6 barrels of petroleum and 5 bunches of gunpowder exploded, killing the staff and damaging Macclesfield Bridge and cages at neighboring London Zoo.

A Bomb Disposal team explode a mortar on Ramsgate East Cliff beach on Tuesday 9th Oct 2012. Apparently the bomb was found over a wall on the victorian steps down to the beach. On a pebbly beach we see some people sitting and looking at the sea on a sunny day. A Land Rover arrives on the beach; several men in Naval uniform get out; one of them uses a mine detector (looks like a metal detector) to locate a mine under the pebbles. It is carefully lifted out.
A large mine on another part of the beach is detonated; a red flag is hoisted as a warning; the men watch the explosion from a shelter / dugout. C/U of the smoking bomb. Another mine is exploded.
At the Portsmouth Headquarters of the Bomb Disposal Unit we see several bombs that have been recovered. A young boy with his parents puts a penny in a large mine used as a collection box.
Note: the men seen are from HMS Vernon. There is a magazine article on file: "Death Still Waits on Britain's Beaches".

The original bomb disposal "Robot" was invented in 1972 by Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Miller. Cobbled together from the chassis of an electrically operated wheelbarrow and designed to carry a hook beneath a car so that it could be towed to a safe location without endangering an EOD officer. These initial "Wheelbarrow's" have been through dozens of generations over the decades and have evolved into modern machines equipped with pincers, disruptors and jammers capable of taking on most improvised explosive devices and even some of the expert-made ones.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Operators are responsible for defusing improvised explosive devices (IEDs), booby traps created to kill and maim indiscriminately.
The job is one of the most highly skilled and dangerous jobs in the Armed Forces. It requires intelligence, fitness and courage, as the soldiers in this job can be routinely placed in complex and dangerous situations. EOD operators are some of the most highly decorated soldiers of the British Army.
Sgt James Slade is one of those soldiers. Here he talks about what it's like, as you approach something designed to destroy life, to remove it from the Battlefield. Those who make that approach call it, 'the long walk.'

A heroic bomb disposal cop was killed as he tried to difuse a device left outside a petrol station in a city centre.
Video pictures show the Egyptian policeman approaching the device which was hidden in a plant pot outside a petrol station in Cairo yesterday.
But it blew up, killing him and injuring three bystanders.
Crowds of people rushed to the stricken officer in busy Al-Harram Street, which leads to the pyramids, but he could not be helped.
They have been fighting the Egyptian army, which overthrew the country’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in 2013.
It comes as threats of more attacks have increased with Egypt's Coptic Christmas today.
Security is typically tightened at churches ahead of the holiday after a string of attacks on Christian targets over the past years.
Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel Latif was quoted by state newspaper Al-Ahram as saying Tuesday's attack in Minya was not sectarian.
"(It) has nothing to do with any of the holidays of our Coptic brothers, it is instead aimed at the security forces, to try to undermine their resolve."
The country's Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of the population of 85 million, have largely coexisted peacefully with majority Sunni Muslims for centuries.

Documentary following three retired bomb disposal officers as they recount their experiences in Northern Ireland during the IRA bombing campaign of the early 70's. It was at this time the bomb disposal officer as we know it was born. As the documentary shows they were not trained for this type of work, they had to learn fast!!
One of the participants, Major Paul Wharton (retired) has written a book about his experiences which is available from Amazon and titled First Light. If you enjoy the documentary then you will certainly enjoy his book.

"Bomb disposal" does not encompass the remediation of soils polluted with explosive materials.
The New York City Police Department established its first bomb squad in 1903. Known as the "Italian Squad", its primary mission was to deal with dynamite bombs used by the Mafia to intimidate immigrant Italian merchants and residents. It would later be known as the "Anarchist Squad" and the "Radical Squad".
Bomb Disposal became a formalised practice in the first World War. The swift mass production of munitions led to many manufacturing defects, and a large proportion of shells fired by both sides were found to be "duds". These were hazardous to attacker and defender alike. In response, the British dedicated a section of Ordnance Examiners from the Royal Army Ordnance Corps to handle the growing problem.

Specialist police arrived at a secret location this afternoon to detonate two devices that were found under Tom Ugly's Bridge yesterday at around 12.30pm. The·large contingent of specialist emergency services was called to undertake a detonation operation near the headlands of Malabar. Police Detectives, supported by the NSW Rescue & Bomb Disposal Squad, Forensic Services, NSW Fire & Rescue Hazmat and Special Operations Ambulance all worked together to render two devices safe. The first device detonated was a pipe bomb, and the second was a gas cylinder. Both devices were safely removed from the "NABCO" chamber by a police officer·wearing a "Bomb Suit". The first "pipe bomb" device was laid in place and a charge was used to blow off the end cap. The second charge was·seen to have a larger explosion to destroy·a gas cylinder. Fire hazmat crews monitored the air and placed devices to detect threats such as radiation. Both devices were found to be benign and are now being examined by forensic services. -

Another Bomb Disposal Incident - Ramsgate East Cliff Beach - Tues 9th Oct 2012
A Bomb Disposal team explode a mortar on Ramsgate East Cliff beach on Tuesday 9th Oct 2012. Apparently the bomb was found over a wall on the victorian steps down to the beach. Lydd, Kent. On a pebbly beach we see some people sitting and looking at the sea on a sunny day. A Land Rover arrives on the beach; several men in Naval uniform get out; one of them uses a mine detector (looks like a metal detector) to locate a mine under the pebbles. It is carefully lifted out. A large mine on another part of the beach is detonated; a red flag is hoisted as a warning; the men watch the explosion from a shelter / dugout. C/U of the smoking bomb. Another mine is exploded. At the Portsmouth Headquarters of the Bomb Disposal Unit we see several bombs that have been recovered. A young boy with his parents puts a penny in a large mine used as a collection box. Bomb Disposal Robot History
The original bomb disposal "Robot" was invented in 1972 by Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Miller. Cobbled together from the chassis of an electrically operated wheelbarrow and designed to carry a hook beneath a car so that it could be towed to a safe location without endangering an EOD officer. These initial "Wheelbarrow's" have been through dozens of generations over the decades and have evolved into modern machines equipped with pincers, disruptors and jammers capable of taking on most improvised explosive devices and even some of the expert-made ones. -

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Operators are responsible for defusing improvised explosive devices (IEDs), booby traps created to kill and maim indiscriminately. The job is one of the most highly skilled and dangerous jobs in the Armed Forces. It requires intelligence, fitness and courage, as the soldiers in this job can be routinely placed in complex and dangerous situations. EOD operators are some of the most highly decorated soldiers of the British Army. Sgt James Slade is one of those soldiers. Here he talks about what it's like, as you approach something designed to destroy life, to remove it from the Battlefield. Those who make that approach call it, 'the long walk.' A heroic bomb disposal cop was killed as he tried to difuse a device left outside a petrol station in a city centre. Video pictures show the Egyptian policeman approaching the device which was hidden in a plant pot outside a petrol station in Cairo yesterday. But it blew up, killing him and injuring three bystanders. Crowds of people rushed to the stricken officer in busy Al-Harram Street, which leads to the pyramids, but he could not be helped. They have been fighting the Egyptian army, which overthrew the country’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in 2013. Documentary following three retired bomb disposal officers as they recount their experiences in Northern Ireland during the IRA bombing campaign of the early 70's. It was at this time the bomb disposal officer as we know it was born. As the documentary shows they were not trained for this type of work, they had to learn fast!! One of the participants, Major Paul Wharton (retired) has written a book about his experiences which is available from Amazon and titled First Light. Bomb Disposal Police detonate pipe bomb found at Tom Ugly's Bridge
Specialist police arrived at a secret location this afternoon to detonate two devices that were found under Tom Ugly's Bridge yesterday at around 12.30pm. The·large contingent of specialist emergency services was called to undertake a detonation operation near the headlands of Malabar. Police Detectives, supported by the NSW Rescue & Bomb Disposal Squad, Forensic Services, NSW Fire & Rescue Hazmat and Special Operations Ambulance all worked together to render two devices safe. A Bomb Disposal team explode a mortar on Ramsgate East Cliff beach on Tuesday 9th Oct 2012. Apparently the bomb was found over a wall on the victorian steps down to the beach. A large mine on another part of the beach is detonated; a red flag is hoisted as a warning; the men watch the explosion from a shelter / dugout. C/U of the smoking bomb. Another mine is exploded.
At the Portsmouth Headquarters of the Bomb Disposal Unit we see several bombs that have been recovered. A young boy with his parents puts a penny in a large mine used as a collection box.
Note: the men seen are from HMS Vernon. There is a magazine article on file: "Death Still Waits on Britain's Beaches".

These initial "Wheelbarrow's" have been through dozens of generations over the decades and have evolved into modern machines equipped with pincers, disruptors and jammers capable of taking on most improvised explosive devices and even some of the expert-made ones.

Video pictures show the Egyptian policeman approaching the device which was hidden in a plant pot outside a petrol station in Cairo yesterday.
But it blew up, killing him and injuring three bystanders.
Crowds of people rushed to the stricken officer in busy Al-Harram Street, which leads to the pyramids, but he could not be helped.
They have been fighting the Egyptian army, which overthrew the country’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in 2013.
It comes as threats of more attacks have increased with Egypt's Coptic Christmas today.
Security is typically tightened at churches ahead of the holiday after a string of attacks on Christian targets over the past years.
Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel Latif was quoted by state newspaper Al-Ahram as saying Tuesday's attack in Minya was not sectarian.
"(It) has nothing to do with any of the holidays of our Coptic brothers, it is instead aimed at the security forces, to try to undermine their resolve."
The country's Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of the population of 85 million, have largely coexisted peacefully with majority Sunni Muslims for centuries.

Police Detectives, supported by the NSW Rescue & Bomb Disposal Squad, Forensic Services, NSW Fire & Rescue Hazmat and Special Operations Ambulance all worked together to render two devices safe.
The first device detonated was a pipe bomb, and the second was a gas cylinder.
Both devices were safely removed from the "NABCO" chamber by a police officer·wearing a "Bomb Suit". The first "pipe bomb" device was laid in place and a charge was used to blow off the end cap. The second charge was·seen to have a larger explosion to destroy·a gas cylinder.
Fire hazmat crews monitored the air and placed devices to detect threats such as radiation.
Both devices were found to be benign and are now being examined by forensic services.

Police have trouble with the computer and of course Roy asks if they tried turning it off and on again. Then Moss asks, what operating system are the police using and when he finds out it's Windows Vista, yells "We're all going to die".
