Devils Island Penal Colony - French Guiana.
The penal colony of Cayenne commonly known as Devil's Island, was a notorious prison of the 19th and 20th centuries. It operated at several locations in French Guiana. Opened in 1852, it is notorious for being used for internal exile of French political prisoners during that period, the most famous of which was Captain Alfred Dreyfus. The system was closed down in 1953.
The prison system stretched over several locations, on the mainland and in the off-shore Îles du Salut group. Île Royale was the reception centre for the general population of the penal colony; they were housed in moderate freedom due to the difficulty of escape from the island. Île Saint-Joseph was the Reclusion, where inmates were sent to be punished by solitary confinement in silence and darkness for escapes or offences committed in the penal colony. Île du Diable was for political prisoners. In the 19th century, the most famous such prisoner was Captain Alfred Dreyfus. In addition to the prisons on each of the three islands in the Salut island group, the French constructed three related prison facilities on the South American mainland, just across the straits at Kourou; 30 miles east in Cayenne, which later became the capital of French Guyana; and a hundred miles west at St. Laurent.
The islands were part of a penal colony from 1852 onwards for common-law criminals of France, who were convicted by juries rather than magistrates. The main part of the penal colony was a labor camp that stretched along the border with Dutch Guiana (present-day Suriname). This penal colony was controversial as it had a reputation for harshness and brutality. Prisoner-on-prisoner violence was common; tropical diseases were rife. Only a small minority of broken survivors returned to France to tell how horrible it was; they sometimes scared other potential criminals to go straight. This system was gradually phased out and has been completely shut down since 1953. Since the late 20th century, the islands have been tourist destinations. The islands were featured in the book Papillon (1970), published as a memoir by Henri Charrière, a former prisoner who escaped.
Devil's Island and associated prisons eventually became one of the most infamous prison systems in history. While the prison system was in use (1852–1953), inmates included political prisoners (such as 239 republicans who opposed Napoleon III's coup d'état in 1851) and the most hardened of thieves and murderers. The vast majority of the more than 80,000 prisoners sent to the Devil's Island prison system never made it back to France. Many died due to disease and harsh conditions. Sanitary systems were limited, and the region was mosquito-infested, with endemic tropical diseases. The only exit from the island prisons was by water, and few convicts escaped.
A common way for convicts to earn money was to trap butterflies, which were sold to collectors. Convicts who were lucky enough to have family willing to send them money had to have it sent to them in care of a prison guard. The standard practice was for the guard to keep a quarter of the amount sent for himself and give the rest to the prisoner.
On 30 May 1854, France passed a new law of forced residency. It required convicts to stay in French Guiana after completion of sentence for a time equal to their forced labour time. If the original sentence exceeded eight years, they were forced to stay as residents for the remainder of their lives and were provided land to settle on. In time, a variety of penal regimes emerged, as convicts were divided into categories according to the severity of their crimes and the terms of their imprisonment or "forced residence" regime.
An 1885 law provided for repeat offenders for minor crimes to be sent to the French Guiana prison system, previously reserved for serious offenders and political prisoners. A limited number of convicted women were also sent to French Guiana, with the intent that they marry freed male inmates to aid in settlement and development of the colony. As the results were poor, the government discontinued the practice in 1907. On Devil's island, the small prison facility did not usually house more than 12 persons.
The horrors of the penal settlement were publicized during the Dreyfus affair, as the French army captain Alfred Dreyfus was unjustly convicted of treason and sent to Devil's Island on 5 January 1895. In 1938 the penal system was strongly criticized in Rene Belbenoit's book Dry Guillotine.
Shortly after the release of Belbenoit's book, which aroused public outrage about the conditions, the French government announced plans to close the bagne de Cayennes. The outbreak of World War II delayed this operation but, from 1946 until 1953, one by one the prisons were closed. The Devil's Island facility was the last to be closed.

In the wet season, cows swim through the Marais de Kaw munching on the fresh vegetation. It is amazing to see how calm, quiet, and graceful these land animals are as they glide effortlessly through the water.

Suriname Tourism
Suriname is not as yet a highly seasoned tourism destination, such as those one can find in the wider Caribbean. Most visitors who travel from abroad to our country have close relatives living here, or were born in Suriname. However this trend has changed, rapidly during the last two decades. According to statistical data provided by the Suriname Tourism Foundation, overall tourist arrivals over t

French Guiana (French: Guyane française; French pronunciation: [ɡɥijan fʁɑ̃sɛz]; officially just Guiana, French: Guyane) is an overseas department and region of France on the north Atlantic coast of South America. It borders Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west. Its 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi) area has a very low population density of less than 3 inhabitants per km2, with half of its 239,450 people in 2012[1] living in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. By land area, it is by far the largest overseas region of France. As an oversea region, it is inside the European Union.
The addition of the adjective "French" in English comes from colonial times when five such colonies existed (The Guianas), namely from west to east: Spanish Guiana (now Guayana Region in Venezuela), British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), French Guiana, and Portuguese Guiana (now Amapá, a state in far northern Brazil). French Guiana and the two larger countries to the north and west, Guyana and Suriname, are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas and comprise one large shield landmass.
A large part of the department's economy derives from the presence of the Guiana Space Centre, now the European Space Agency's primary launch site near the equator. Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Guiana

6. Devil’s Island, French Guiana
Devil Island, French Guiana
Devil’s Island is the third largest island of the Îles du Salut island group in the Atlantic Ocean. It is located 14 km off the coast of French Guiana in South America just north of the town of Kourou. Known as “the Green Hell” and described as one of the world’s most notorious penal colonies, Devil’s Island ranks high among French Guiana’s tourist attractions. Run-down cells, the prison headquarters and an infant cemetery are all part of the agenda. But is the once disease-plagued island, where thousands of convicts died in horrid conditions. (Source)
5. Antarctica
Antarctica
This relatively lawless, predominantly uninhabited mass of rock, ice and penguins is truly the last frontier. It’s a place to be inspired, humbled and dumfounded, and is the ultimate destination for one-upping your globetrotting friends. But is it ethical to visit? Once inaccessible — save for a few intrepid scientist and explorers — Antarctica is now open to the everyday tourist for a small window of time each summer in the Southern Hemisphere, and it’s easier to get to than you may think. The remotest continent attracted about 35,000 people this season. That’s down from a high of 46,000 in 2007, but it’s the highest number in years, and there are concerns that visitors could be bringing diseases or seeds that may disrupt the fragile Antarctic ecosystem. All prospective tourists are encouraged to book with the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, whose members promote safe and environmentally responsible private-sector travel to the Antarctic. 4. Plastinarium in Guben, Germany
Gunther von Hagens Pokerrunde
Plastination is a technique used in anatomy to preserve a body for study purposes, but it turns out that it can also be a good source of revenue. Dr Gunther von Hagen’s museum has stirred as much controversy as it has received applause. What you can see here among other things are techniques of dissection presented interactively and real human bodies “involved” in all sorts of activities.
While nobody is denying the huge contribution Plastinarium makes to the training of medical students, was it really necessary to seat the exhibits at the poker table or on a bike? And why would anyone other than a doctor or a young adept of medicine want to see all this from up close? The truth is however that since the opening in 2006, Plastinarium has received over a 100 thousand visits. (Source)
3. North Korea
North Korea
Landscape wise, North Korea could be the world’s prominent tourist magnet. Dramatic mountain scenery, pristine lagoons, waterfalls and amazing Buddhist temples are enough to tempt a visitor. But, it may be one of the least visited countries in the world. There seems to be a moral dilemma whether to sponsor a state that’s infamous for its nuclear weapons program and inhumane practices. Even if you decide to go to look for the truth, at all times you will be accompanied by a government-appointed guide. In the end, all you get is false historical accounts and laudatory speeches instead of a real experience. Then why go at all? (Source)
2. Jarawa Reserve, Andaman Islands
Jarawa People
The Jarawa are one of the adivasi indigenous peoples of the Andaman Islands in India. First exposed by tribal rights group Survival International in 2010 and brought to light by an unsettling video uploaded by the Observer last January. That showed women forced to dance by an off-camera policeman. With a view to protecting the Jarawa tribes, the Supreme Court on Monday banned all kinds of commercial and tourism activities within a five-kilometre radius around the Jarawa Tribal Reserve in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. But reports surface periodically claiming that the human safaris are, in fact, still going on. (source)
1. Vang Vieng, Laos
Vang Vieng, Laos
Vang Vieng is a tourism-oriented town in Laos. The town lies on the Nam Song river. The most notable feature of the area is the karst hill landscape surrounding the town. Vang Vieng, deep in the jungle of Laos. is a backpacker paradise where there are no rules. Last year at least 27 travellers died there. and countless more were injured. Laos has the reputation of being one of the most dangerous places for tourists in all of Asia. Drugs, death and drowning. These are the words most often associated with Vang Vieng.

(source)

Suriname is not as yet a highly seasoned tourism destination, such as those one can find in the wider Caribbean. Most visitors who travel from abroad to our country have close relatives living here, or were born in Suriname. However this trend has changed, rapidly during the last two decades. According to statistical data provided by the Suriname Tourism Foundation, overall tourist arrivals over the past years noted a significant increase from 60,000 visitors in 2002 to more than 150,000 visitors in 2006 and 175.000 in 2009. The number increased even more in 2010, when 205,001 visitors were registered.
More and more focused initiatives have been taken to improve the tourism sector while high standards of professionalism were introduced. For example, owners of warungs, the cozy small typical Indonesian food stands along the East West road, took a French language course so as to better communicate with their clients from French Guyana and offer them better service. Moreover, tour guides are trained in wildlife knowledge, in order to be able to point out various species of flora and fauna to the people under their guidance. As regards accommodation, at present the number of apartments and small hotels is 253; there is a wide range of possibilities, varying from basic and adventurous to very comfortable. Tourists don't have to bathe in the river or sleep in a hammock if they do not want to. There are choices now -- hot waters, water closets, comfortable beds.
