Cotopaxi is one of the provinces of Ecuador. The capital is Latacunga. The province contains the Cotopaxi Volcano, an intermittent volcano with a height of 19,388 feet.
The province is divided into 7 cantons. The following table lists each canton with its population (per the 2001 census), its area in square kilometres (km²), and the name of the canton seat (capital).
Ethnic groups as of the Ecuadorian census of 2010:
Cotopaxi is an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, located in the Latacunga canton of Cotopaxi Province, about 50 km (31 mi) south of Quito, and 33 km (21 mi) northeast of the city of Latacunga, Ecuador, in South America. It is the second highest summit in Ecuador, reaching a height of 5,897 m (19,347 ft). It is one of the world's highest volcanoes.
Since 1738, Cotopaxi has erupted more than 50 times, resulting in the creation of numerous valleys formed by lahars (mudflows) around the volcano.
The Geophysics Institute of Quito's National Polytechnic School placed Cotopaxi under active watch on 25 June 2015 after observing activity. Cotopaxi's most recent eruption started on 15 August 2015.
On a clear day, Cotopaxi is clearly visible on the skyline from Quito and is part of the chain of volcanoes around the Pacific plate known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. It has an almost symmetrical cone that rises from a highland plain of about 3,800 metres (12,500 ft), with a width at its base of about 23 kilometres (14 mi). It has one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world, which starts at the height of 5,000 metres (16,400 ft). At its summit, Cotopaxi has an 800 X 550 m wide crater which is 250 m deep. The crater consists of two concentric crater rims, the outer one being partly free of snow and irregular in shape. The crater interior is covered with ice cornices and rather flat. The highest point is on the outer rim of the crater on the north side.
The Andes are the longest continental mountain range in the world. They are a continual range of highlands along the western coast of South America. This range is about 7,000 km (4,300 mi) long, about 200 to 700 km (120 to 430 mi) wide (widest between 18° south and 20° south latitude), and of an average height of about 4,000 m (13,000 ft). The Andes extend from north to south through seven South American countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
Along their length, the Andes are split into several ranges, which are separated by intermediate depressions. The Andes are the location of several high plateaux – some of which host major cities, such as Quito, Bogotá, Arequipa, Medellín, Sucre, Mérida and La Paz. The Altiplano plateau is the world's second-highest after the Tibetan plateau. These ranges are in turn grouped into three major divisions based on climate: the Tropical Andes, the Dry Andes, and the Wet Andes.
The Andes are the world's highest mountain range outside of Asia. The highest mountain outside Asia, Mount Aconcagua, rises to an elevation of about 6,961 m (22,838 ft) above sea level. The peak of Chimborazo in the Ecuadorean Andes is farther from the Earth's center than any other location on the Earth's surface, due to the equatorial bulge resulting from the Earth's rotation. The world's highest volcanoes are in the Andes, including Ojos del Salado on the Chile-Argentina border which rises to 6,893 m (22,615 ft).

Since the recent eruptions, Cotopaxi has been officially closed for climbing by authorities. But we still had the chance for an 1 hour hike up to the basecamp which is in 4800m. Even a short hike in this altitude is so freakin exhausting but it was a very nice experience. Thank you so much!
Pujilí Canton, Cotopaxi Province, Ecuador Quilotoa- at 12, 841 feet above sea level the water-filled caldera is the most western volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. The caldera is 2 miles wide and was formed by the collapse of this volcano after a catastrophic eruption about 800 years ago
Parque Nacional Cotopaxi is a protected area shared between Cotopaxi Province, Napo Province and Pichincha Province, roughly 50 km south of Quito. Cotopaxi (19378 ft) is among the tallest active volcanoes in the world. We take an early morning trek to the side of the volcano, up to a station about 16000 ft high.
My friends and I spent the weekend in the Cotopaxi Province of Ecuador. It is home to the Cotopaxi volcano, which is the second highest summit in the country. We stayed at the gorgeous Secret Garden hostel, which had a guide take us trekking in the forest and along the streams to waterfalls. We also went horseback riding for six hours up to the top of a mountain for a closer look at the volcano. Follow along with my Ecuador adventures at www.thetravelingbard.com
Not from a movie, rather from a newscast. Punishment day in Cotopaxi Province, Ecuador. This is indigenous community justice at some high Andes locales in rural Ecuador, Bolivia, or Peru. Two culprits are beaten with both a whip and stinging nettle, which causes painful skin irritation. When Bolivian President Morales talks about allowing indigenous punishments in lieu of jail sentences, the process shown in this clip is a demonstration of the highlands alternative. There is a pervasive lack of confidence in the ability of authorities to maintain justice in some impoverished rural community areas. Sometimes there is violent public vigilante justice resulting in severe injuries or even death by lynching. Residents complain that police arrest criminals and don't bother to prosecute ...

This is a hike up Ecuador's Cotopaxi Volcano, one of the highest active volcanos in the world at 5,897 meters. During our visit in January 2017 the Cotopaxi summit was closed to climbers due to volcanic activities but you can still hike to Cotopaxi base camp at about 4,800 meters. The journey then continued by mountain biking through Cotopaxi National Park down to a lake, Control Capsi. We did this Cotopaxi day trip tour with an operator based in Quito - Carpe DM - and really enjoyed the experience.
