Prime Minister Modi will begin his five-day trip by visiting Seychelles where he will be given a civic reception in Mahe. The Prime Minister will hand over the Coastal Radar Surveillance System which was set up with India's help. PM Modi will also hold bilateral talks with Seychelles President James Alexis Michel on Wednesday in a bid to strengthen the maritime security and bilateral cooperation. He will then proceed to Mauritius for a two-day visit. During his stay, he will hold extensive talks with his Mauritian counterpart Sir Anerood Jugnauth to further enhance bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi will also be the Chief Guest at the Mauritius's 42nd National Day celebrations. He is further scheduled to address the National Assembly of the country. After Mauritius, Prime Minister Modi will be in Sri Lanka on Friday, where he will hold meetings with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other senior leaders across the political spectrum. During the visit, several MoUs and agreements are expected to be signed between the two nations in different fields. Prime Minister Modi will visit Mahabodhi society and the Mahabodhi Tree in Anuradhapura. The Prime Minister is also likely to visit the former war zone and the Tamil heartland of Jaffna where he will hand over houses to the internally displaced people in Jaffna, which were built by the Indian cooperation.

Bolstering defence and maritime security cooperation will be high on the agenda. Given the proliferation of pirates in the region, India has been proactive in strengthening the capacity of the Seychelles Peoples’ Defence Forces (SPDF). In 2014, India gifted a naval ship, INS Tarasa, to Seychelles to augment surveillance and patrolling capacity of Seychelles waters. Senior officers of SPDF have trained in India’s military academies. Moving beyond defence, it’s in the areas of development and capacity building that the India-Seychelles partnership shines forth. Besides extending Lines of Credit and providing Seychelles officials training under the ITEC programme, India has been involved with a host of projects in the island country, including the India-assisted IT Centre for Excellence. Victoria Hospital in Seychelles is linked with major hospitals in India under PAN -African satellite tele-medicine system. In the area of business, a host of Indian companies are keeping the flag of Indian enterprise flying high. TATA has become a household name, with its buses plying to other regions of Mahé Island. Ashok Leyland’s state-of-the-art buses and Bharti Airtel launch of 4G mobile network are unfolding stories of Indian corporate’s success in the island country. Culturally, the Indian diaspora, which comprises 8 per cent of the island nation’s population, remains the flag-bearer of Indian traditions and values.
