For the third year in a row, the students surveyed for the annual college guide ranked Rice No. 1 for best quality of life. The new edition also ranks Rice No. 1 for happiest students.
The rankings are based on a survey of 122,000 students at 376 schools during 2010-11 and the previous two school years. An average of 325 students at each school participated in the survey. Only about 15 percent of America's 2,500 four-year colleges, plus three colleges outside the U.S., are profiled in the book.

Rice University researchers who pioneered the development of laser-induced graphene have configured their discovery into flexible, solid-state microsupercapacitors that rival the best available for energy storage and delivery.

It all started with an offhand comment from a student who said, "I don't want to leave Rice without having done a Shakespeare play outside on this beautiful campus."
At first, Christina Keefe, professor in the practice in theater and director of the Rice Theatre Program, thought nothing of it; she agreed that it would be a lovely idea.
Then as she walked around the campus one fall day, Keefe walked through the courtyard outside Rice Gallery and thought that the archway would really be a perfect place to set something sort of Grecian.
A year later, the Rice Theatre Program is producing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" outside on campus, utilizing those columns and the stunning oak tree in Founder's Court. And as for the student who made the comment? She is playing Titania, queen of the fairies, in her senior year.

The Countryside tour:
Local flower, fruit farms. Also cricket farm where we ate boiled crickets (grasshoppers).
Minority Village, use to be rural jungle people and hunters. Coffee farm.
Boa An Liquor, rice wine distillery.
Weasel Cafe. Ca phe chon or civet-cat coffee. Coffee produced from weasel droppings. Expensive and popular with coffee connoisseurs.
Stayed at Hotel Dai Loi, Fortune Hotel, friendly staff, and good buffet breakfast. Good value for money hotel.
Travel Tips:
Your hotel must get a copy of your passport and travel visa by law.
English was not common at all, even in the touristy District 1. Good idea to learn some basic words in Vietnamese like: Hello, thank you, No, friend, etc.
Get your hotel reception staff to organise taxis, tours, and advice on fair prices.
Most hotels have small local maps and cards in English, so you can use them communicate with taxi drivers.
Traffic may seem hectic and chaotic, but they make it work. When you cross the road on foot, do it slowly and traffic will avoid you. If you run, traffic cannot predict you, so may hit you.
HCMC is the government name of the city, the locals still call it Saigon. Many shops, maps, and even travel bookings will say Saigon.
When shopping at markets, try negotiate 1/4 (25%) the seller's price. Then negotiate and barter from there. Eg if its priced VD1000K offer VD250K. Most sellers at Ben Than Market tried ripping me off on clothes and souvenirs. Do a lap or check out a few vendors first to compare prices.
The average basic worker earns VD 200K a day. So tipping VD 40-50K is pretty generous.
I found the locals very conservative / traditional. They were often camera shy, and would even hide. Many businesses would not allow camera use on their premises, or they get very upset.
Locals were also scared of undercover police (eg being camera shy). Police in general are known for being tough on crime and having zero tolerance.

Sometimes when you travel somewhere you don't need to spend a lot of time in that particular city and/or country to form distinct memories and impressions. For us, our brief four day stay in Sofia, Bulgaria certainly fit the bill. From amazing local cuisine to street performances, we tried our best to see and do as much as we possibly could in short period of time. The following is a travel video we've put together highlighting the top attractions and things to do in Sofia, Bulgaria:
1) Our first day in Sofia we hit the ground taking in many street performances, getting caught up in a football mob / rally, visiting major landmarks and eating street food. These are our first impressions of Sofia.
2) Already impressed by Bulgarian street food, we decided to treat ourselves to a sit down meal to further sample Bulgarian cuisine. At Lubimoto we feasted on Chushki Burek (stuffed red peppers with feta cheese) and Bulgarian pork loin with potatoes, cheese and gravy. Both were delicious!
3) Wanting to indulge our taste buds further we visited the ever popular Made In Home restaurant where we sampled Rakia and goat cheese salad.
4) On our last day in Sofia we tried to cover parts of the city we didn't get to visit on previous days. Some of the highlights included checking out Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and witnessing more street performances. Those Bulgarian break dancers really do have all the moves!
This is part of our Travel in Bulgaria series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Bulgarian culture, Bulgarian arts, Bulgarian foods, Bulgarian religion and Bulgarian people.

Blaffer Art Museum and the Houston Arts Alliance have joined forces to present 'What Time Is It?' by Jo Ann Fleischhauer in collaboration with Musiqa, a public art installation at the Louis and Annie Friedman Clock Tower, also known as the Market Square Clock Tower, in downtown Houston's Historic District.
Musiqa's collaboration addresses the auditory nature of the clock tower by replacing the scheduled chimes of bells with original musical works inspired by the site. C O'Clock, composed by Rice composers Anthony Brandt and Chapman Welch, runs through the entire duration of the six month exhibition by replacing the ringing of the bell with a progression of chords that rise and set like the sun. Each chord is complemented by ringing sounds that are randomly generated by a computer and make each tolling unique and unpredictable. The sound source of both the underlying chords and the improvisations is Market Square itself, recorded street noise, which is filtered to the extent that it turns into pure tones. The computer-generated sounds are complemented by monthly live performances of compositions by students of the Rice University Shepherd School of Music. These events are sponsored by Musiqa.

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s.
"Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

*** Some individuals directly connected with the North Korean government have been working to have this film removed from YT and other web sites - first via ambiguous, threatening emails, later through baseless demands and now by flagging the film online for arbitrary, unfounded reasons. I want to assure everyone that I have completed this film with great ethical concern, full transparency and as much as possible in communication with parties who may have been affected by the film. I was not undercover, I was truthful about everything I did every step of the way. YT: I have all proper documentation. I'm doing all my best to keep the film up. If they succeed in shutting it down, i will do my best to re-upload along with a list of alternative web sites where you can see it. ***

If you like the film, if you want to see more - please, please make sure to donate!

There are many ways to save money in this world, but some of the easiest things you can do are actually the most obvious and quite simple - that is if you put your mind to it, make a commitment, and strive to fulfill your goals.
After I graduated from University in the United States, I decided I wanted to leave and travel the world while seeing some amazing sites and destinations. Luckily, I had been working throughout university, paying my way as I went, and also was able to save quite a lot of money along the way. When I began traveling I didn't have a lot of money, but I did have enough to get started. 4 years later, I'm still traveling and still able to live frugally, pursue my dreams, and save money in the process.
But how did I save money to travel the world? Well among many things, one of the things I did was to reduce my spending on the little things.
I worked for a company for years throughout university driving a truck around and collected waste and garbage from the upper class. Many guys I worked with would stop off a gas station and run into the convenience store to buy a soda, a snack, and maybe some candy to top things off. $10 later, they come out of the store, jump back in the truck. 1 hour later, that $10 would be complete consumed, with very little show (other than maybe a sore stomach) for the money. That was 1 hour of income, and added up day after day in a similar manner, that amount of small money start to really add up.
That's when I got to thinking, one of the absolute best ways of how to save money is to knock out the unnecessary things. Simple right? Yes it sounds simple. And it really is. That is if you make the commitment and do everything you can to save money in order to travel. If you don't make the commitment, you'll find yourself grabbing a pack of gum, reaching for a soda, or getting an unnecessary snack or item.
Now that being said, I know we all have weaknesses and passions. My personal passion is food, I simply love to eat - but I love to eat full meals and not so much snacks. So knowing myself, I avoid most snacks (with occasional exceptions of course), and use my money for full meals, which I appreciate more.
Learn about yourself and what small things you can cut out of your life to save more money and be able to do the things you want to be doing - like traveling!
Do you have any other tips about how to save money to travel? Would love to hear from you in the comments section below. Thank you for watching!

The history of the Dominican Republic is the result of an unlikely mixture of influences; nowhere else will you find a blending of European, African, and native Taíno Indian cultures. These distinct cultures still drive the social identity of the people today. Every aspect of their food, music, art, sports and religion provides a unique insight into the development of their country. In a single day you can experience both ancient and modern cultures from around the globe. Nowhere is this more evident than in their food. As a former Spanish Colony, many of its dishes carry a familiar Latin American feel. Lots of rice, beans, meat and seafood can be found in their cuisine. However, strong influences from its heritage give the meals a unique twist. Traditional Taíno dishes are still made featuring yucca, plantains, and potatoes; as well as African recipes using similar native ingredients. The most common food on the Island is called La Bandera, or "The Flag." It is made with meat, rice, and red beans. Making the dish distinctly Dominican, many will also serve it with friend plantains called "tostones." As a culture that loves to eat, the meal will often continue beyond this first course. Be prepared to try boiled green plantain known as "mangú," "pasteles en hojas," which are wrapped turnovers cooked in banana leaves; and various casseroles, stews, and meat dishes featuring braised goat, pork and chicken rinds.
In addition to their rich culinary history, Dominicans also demonstrate their unmistakable heritage through art. The island is filled with many different types of bright and colorful artwork. Jewelry made out of amber, bone, horn and coconut husk can be found at local markets and shops, where the native Taíno influence can still be seen. In addition to jewelry, Dominican artists also use clay, porcelain, hemp, and guano to make both decorative and religious figurines. Many of these figurines point to the religious history of the island. Its inhabitants are mostly Catholic, followed by other denominations of Christianity.
Although food and art are important parts of Dominican culture, the true life of the culture is baseball. Much more than a national pastime, baseball is a major source of national pride and identity. In fact, almost 40 percent of players in the U.S. Major League Baseball and minor leagues come from Latin America- with most of those coming from the Dominican Republic. Some of their most famous Dominican players include Pedro Martinez, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols and Sammy Sosa.
As the first city founded in the Americas, the Dominican Republic's capital city of Santo Domingo boasts an incredible collection of museums, historic sites, art and music. The Colonial City, located inside Santo Domingo, is the first city of the America's; it features the first street, hospital, university and cathedral in the Americas. It is believed that the body of Christopher Columbus still resides on this island that he landed on hundreds of years ago. There are many historic museums and buildings that take a unique look into Dominican culture. Among them are the Alcázar de Colon (Fortress of Colon), the Reloj de Sol (the Sun Clock) and the monasterio de los Padres Dominicos (the Monastery of the Dominican Fathers).
Much of the Dominican culture can be experienced through its inspiring museums, food, and music. However, to truly understand the depth of the Dominican People, you must experience Carnival. This annual celebration of independence spans the entire country, with each city putting on their own unique version of the festival. They fill the streets with colorful masks, music, and of course, dancing. However, Carnival didn't always look this way. It is actually the culmination of all three cultures; native Taíno, Spanish and African. Brought together, they create a swirl of energy and culture that you can't find anywhere else. Carnival lasts throughout the month of February. Other Dominican Holidays include January 26th, the day of the patriarch Juan Pablo Duarte; March 9, the day of the patriarch Francisco del Rosario Sánchez; August 16, the Restoration of the Republic; and Constitution Day on November 6.

Xi'an is more than 3,000 years old and was known as Chang'an in ancient times. For 1,000 years, the city was the capital for 13 dynasties, and a total of 73 emperors ruled here. Xi'an is the undisputed root of Chinese civilization having served as the capital city for the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties. With so much history within the ground the city lies upon, it is no wonder that there are so many historical ruins, museums and cultural relics to be found here. It was already influencing the world outside of the Great Wall of China as the eastern terminus of the Silk Road(丝绸之路). Here traders from far and wide brought goods and ideas for sale and took goods and ideas back with them to their native countries. In present day Xi'an not much of its former glory remains within the city confines, due to the constant warfare and political changes that swept China particularly throughout the 20th Century. Today the city has a pleasant cosmopolitan flair to it and it is worth visiting for the famed Terracotta Warriors alone. It has often been said that, "if you have not been to Xi'an, you have not been to China!"

City Wall of Xi'an (西安城墙; Xīānchéngqiáng), . As the world's largest city wall, the Xi'an city wall has been restored and is 12m high, 18m wide is its base, 15m wide on the top, 13.7km long, and bikes (also bikes for two or three persons) are provided for renting, now it's ¥45 per 120 minutes/bike (or ¥90 for 120/2-person-bike) plus a refundable deposit. You can hire one at the top of all gates; you may return it to other stations on the wall. Be aware that bikes will not be rented if there is any chance of rain, because the top of the wall becomes slippery
Shaanxi Historic Museum This museum houses a collection of local artefacts that span the entirety of the province's history from the Neolithic through the Qing dynasty. In particular it contains fabulously well preserved pottery from nearby Banpo neolithic village (also worth a visit) and many excellent Shang Dynasty bronzes. Although some guidebooks call it "one of the best museums in China", its old fashioned pots-and-arrowheads-behind-glass format may appeal mainly to enthusiasts, though they also feature some well-made but glorifying high-definition movies in the exhibition halls.
Forest of Steles (碑林; Xīānbēilín), (Just inside the southern city wall, near the Wenchang Gate). This collection of 2,300 stone tablets (many written to provide an "official text" of the Chinese classics) and epitaphs is the largest and oldest of its kind in China.
This includes the famous Nestorian Stele, dating back to the 7th century. It depicts the coming of Nestorian Christianity to China. The Nestorian Stele is in Showroom Number 2 and is the first stele on the left. ¥50/¥25 Beilin Museum, foreign student cards not accepted (January 2012).
Wolong Temple (卧龙寺), (One block North and East of the Forest of Steles museum). This active Buddhist temple dates back to 200BC. Recently restored, the temple is vibrant and busy.
Big (Wild) Goose Pagoda (大雁塔; Dàyàntǎ), (At Ci'en Temple, take bus 41 or 610 from the main train station). Built by Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi(高宗李治) in 652AD. Emblem of the city of Xi'an. In the fountain in front of the pagoda there is a very nice water and music show sometimes during the day with pleasant parks and western eateries nearby. ¥50 to enter the temple complex, another ¥40 to enter the pagoda.
Little (Wild) Goose Pagoda (小雁塔; Xiǎoyàntǎ), (At Jianfu Temple). Completed in 709AD. To enter you will have to buy a joint ticket with the adjoining Xi'an Museum ¥30, Jul 11 (Note that the ticket still states the old price of ¥50, however ¥30 is charged).. edit
Bell Towers (钟楼; Zhōnglóu), (In the exact center of the city). ¥27 (or ¥40 including Drum Tower).
Drum Tower (鼓楼; Gǔlóu), (Just to the northwest within the Muslim Quarter). Performances at 9:10, 10:00, 11:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00. ¥27 (or ¥40 including Bell Tower).
Grand Mosque (大清真寺; Qīngzhēnsì), (Behind Drum Tower). Built in a perfect mixture of Islamic and Chinese architecture styles with seating for 1,000 worshipers and the Muslim Street district (回民街 Huímín Jiē) around it. It is famous as the very first mosque ever to be built in China. It can be quite difficult to find through the winding back streets but is very well known to locals. Only Muslims are permitted entry to the actual mosque but there is plenty to see in the many accompanying courtyards. Ladies are asked to cover up with a scarf according to Muslim tradition. ¥25.
