Belarussians have many legends connected with this bird. It is a symbol of Belarussian nature, happiness and youth. To kill the stork is a very very bad thing. Also it is said that a pair of storks always live together, but if one among the pair dies, the other cannot live without it and it also dies.

Demonstrators protesting against the union treaty between Russia and Belarus have clashed with police in the Belarusian capital, Minsk.
The Belarusian Popular Front says more than 200 people were detained during the clashes Wednesday, and most of them were beaten.
Belarusian opponents of the accord fear their country of 10 (m) million people will lose its independence to much larger Russia, with a population of 148 (m) million.
The demonstration against the union treaty between Russia and Belarus began peacefully, with a crowd of about five-thousand gathering in the Belarus capital, Minsk, on Wednesday.
As the demonstration gathered momentum, however, riot police appeared and violence erupted.
The Belarusian Popular Front and a human rights group - the Belarusian Helsinki Committee - says more than 200 people were detained and most of them were beaten.
Belarusian state television, quoting the interior ministry, said at least 70 people were detained and three police officers were hospitalised.
The union treaty, signed by Russia and Belarus Wednesday, is meant to bring their people, economies and armies closer together.
It is the biggest step toward reintegration by any of the former Soviet republics.
Russian President Boris Yeltsin, who signed the accord with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko, stressed that the two Slavic nations will remain sovereign and separate.
No other ex-Soviet republics has shown a real desire for reunification since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, creating 15 separate states.
The two countries plan to coordinate economic reforms and military activities, create joint energy and transportation systems and possibly introduce a common currency.
They will set up a Supreme Council, including top leaders from both countries, to outline joint policies.
The treaty appears to have solid support in both Russia and Belarus, though its critics argue that integrating the two struggling countries will only create more problems for both.
Belarusian opponents fear their country of 10 (m) million people will lose its independence to much larger Russia, with a population of 148 (m) million.
Protesters here in Minsk waved banners reading "The Russians are coming", and other anti-union slogans.
Neither government presented the treaty to the public before the signing ceremony, and critics say its secrecy was also cause for concern.

World Summit on humanitarian affairs opens in Istanbul
World Summit on humanitarian affairs opens in Istanbul. The UN, for the first time in its history, has organized such a forum due to the increasing number of conflicts and natural disasters. The forum will decide how to help 125 million people who suffer from them.
It is planned to consider the observance of the laws of war, providing aid to the needy, strengthening of humanitarian actions. International community will reaffirm its commitment to the principles of humanity, unity and cooperation, without which it is impossible to prevent crises, to find a way out of them and to save people from suffering.
The summit will feature 6000 participants from 80 countries. Belarusian delegation is headed by Consul General in Istanbul Igor Bely.
Vladimir Makei will take part in the annual meeting of foreign ministers of EU countries and countries participating in the "Eastern Partnership" initiative
Today Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei is taking part in the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the European Union (EU) and the Eastern Partnership (EaP) Initiative in Brussels.
The ministerial meeting will focus on such issues as the current state of affairs and prospects of the Eastern Partnership in the context of the Review of the European Neighborhood Policy.
Vladimir Makei will outline Belarus' approaches to the current state of affairs and the reforming of the Eastern Partnership initiative.
"Eastern Partnership" is the EU program for the rapprochement with 6 countries of the former Soviet Union - Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

Team Canada won IIHF World Championship. In the final match the founders of hockey defeated Finland 2:0. Before that, in the group stage, the Finnish team decisively won 4:0. Moreover, before the finals, the Finns did not lose to anyone. Russians won bronze by defeating the United States 7:2.

Russian President Boris Yeltsin signed a treaty with Belarus Wednesday that increases political, economic and military cooperation between the two neighbours.
The treaty is the biggest step yet towards reintegration by any of the former Soviet republics since the empire collapsed in 1991, creating 15 separate states.
Although it stops well short of merging the two countries, many Russians are angry there has not been a referendum on the issue.
With one of the least healthy economies of the former Soviet republics, Belarus stands to gain plenty from a new treaty drawing it closer to Russia.
Boris Yeltsin also hopes to use the reintegration to counter NATO's eastward expansion.
But critics in Moscow say the price is too high - Russia will not be able to shoulder the burden of Belarus's moribund command economy.
The two countries plan to coordinate economic reforms and military activities, create joint energy and transportation systems and possibly introduce a common currency.
They will also set up a Supreme Council, including top leaders of both countries, to outline joint policies.
But some critics believe Russia cannot afford such a union.

Minsk Hub of Peace: International platform for conflict resolution under the aegis of the Global Shapers Community / WEF
Dear Global Shapers, Friends and Colleagues !
At present, youth leaders are not included in conflict resolution and peacebuilding processes in the Eastern European region. Minsk Shapers Hub propose to set up the Youth Center for Conflict Resolution in Minsk under the aegis of the Global Shapers Community / WEF, which would unite efforts of international civil society, Belarusian government and regional actors in promotion of peace and security.
None of the "frozen conflicts" in the Soviet successor states has been resolved peacefully. Furthermore, the situation even became worse over the last years.
So, what can Belarus contribute ? I believe that Belarus has great potential in contribution to the regional peace and security. Belarus may serve as a neutral platform bringing together stakeholders from Russia, Ukraine and elsewhere.
A) Historically, Belarus had impressive experience in successful integration of migrants with different ethnic and religious backgrounds.
B) Belarus also maintains friendly relations with all neighboring countries and has become an important arena for communication.
C) Belarus not only continues bringing its input to the resolution of Donbass. It has called on Russia and Turkey to settle for compromise. Russian side has recently stated that Belarus may provide a convenient platform for other kinds of peace dialogues, including talks over the situation in the Middle East.
D) Minsk shapers are confident that the Belarusian authorities will also give necessary support to organize events proposed in our project outline. Minsk Shapers Hub has a preliminary agreement of partnership with : the Belarusian National Investment Agency, the Belarusian Republican Association of Enterpreneurs and there are already planned consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus
E) Minsk Shapers Hub (and Global Shapers Community) has the Management capacity to facilitate this great project.

Until the 20th century, different states at various times controlled the lands of modern-day Belarus: for example: the Principality of Polotsk (11th to 14th centuries), the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire. In the aftermath of the 1917 Russian Revolution, Belarus declared independence as the Belarusian People's Republic, succeeded by the Socialist Soviet Republic of Byelorussia, which became a founding constituent republic of the Soviet Union in 1922 and was renamed as the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (Byelorussian SSR). Belarus lost almost half of its territory to Poland after the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1921. Much of the borders of Belarus took their modern shape in 1939 when some lands of the Second Polish Republic were reintegrated into it after the Soviet invasion of Poland and were finalized after World War II. During World War II, military operations devastated Belarus, which lost about a third of its population and more than half of its economic resources. I believe that Belarus has great potential in contribution to the regional peace and security. Belarus may serve as a neutral platform bringing together stakeholders from Russia, Ukraine and elsewhere. A) Historically, Belarus had impressive experience in successful integration of migrants with different ethnic and religious backgrounds. B) Belarus also maintains friendly relations with all neighboring countries and has become an important arena for communication. C) Belarus not only continues bringing its input to the resolution of Donbass. It has called on Russia and Turkey to settle for compromise. Russian side has recently stated that Belarus may provide a convenient platform for other kinds of peace dialogues, including talks over the situation in the Middle East. D) Minsk shapers are confident that the Belarusian authorities will also give necessary support to organize events proposed in our project outline. Also it is said that a pair of storks always live together, but if one among the pair dies, the other cannot live without it and it also dies.

Belarusian state television, quoting the interior ministry, said at least 70 people were detained and three police officers were hospitalised.
The union treaty, signed by Russia and Belarus Wednesday, is meant to bring their people, economies and armies closer together.
It is the biggest step toward reintegration by any of the former Soviet republics.
Russian President Boris Yeltsin, who signed the accord with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko, stressed that the two Slavic nations will remain sovereign and separate.
No other ex-Soviet republics has shown a real desire for reunification since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, creating 15 separate states.
The two countries plan to coordinate economic reforms and military activities, create joint energy and transportation systems and possibly introduce a common currency.
They will set up a Supreme Council, including top leaders from both countries, to outline joint policies.
The treaty appears to have solid support in both Russia and Belarus, though its critics argue that integrating the two struggling countries will only create more problems for both.
Belarusian opponents fear their country of 10 (m) million people will lose its independence to much larger Russia, with a population of 148 (m) million.
Protesters here in Minsk waved banners reading "The Russians are coming", and other anti-union slogans.

The ministerial meeting will focus on such issues as the current state of affairs and prospects of the Eastern Partnership in the context of the Review of the European Neighborhood Policy.

Dear Global Shapers, Friends and Colleagues !
At present, youth leaders are not included in conflict resolution and peacebuilding processes in the Eastern European region. Minsk Shapers Hub propose to set up the Youth Center for Conflict Resolution in Minsk under the aegis of the Global Shapers Community / WEF, which would unite efforts of international civil society, Belarusian government and regional actors in promotion of peace and security.
None of the "frozen conflicts" in the Soviet successor states has been resolved peacefully. Furthermore, the situation even became worse over the last years.
So, what can Belarus contribute ? I believe that Belarus has great potential in contribution to the regional peace and security. Belarus may serve as a neutral platform bringing together stakeholders from Russia, Ukraine and elsewhere.
A) Historically, Belarus had impressive experience in successful integration of migrants with different ethnic and religious backgrounds.
B) Belarus also maintains friendly relations with all neighboring countries and has become an important arena for communication.
C) Belarus not only continues bringing its input to the resolution of Donbass. It has called on Russia and Turkey to settle for compromise. Russian side has recently stated that Belarus may provide a convenient platform for other kinds of peace dialogues, including talks over the situation in the Middle East.
D) Minsk shapers are confident that the Belarusian authorities will also give necessary support to organize events proposed in our project outline. Minsk Shapers Hub has a preliminary agreement of partnership with : the Belarusian National Investment Agency, the Belarusian Republican Association of Enterpreneurs and there are already planned consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus
E) Minsk Shapers Hub (and Global Shapers Community) has the Management capacity to facilitate this great project.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Belarus, a former member of the USSR. Today it remains a country with a heavy soviet atmosphere, a state-controlled economy, censorship and fixed elections. However Minsk, the capital of Belarus, is a cosmopolitan city, elegant and well maintained. Tourists in Minsk can find several attractions and generally don’t feel oppressed in any way.

1. The longest street in Belarus - Independence Avenue in Minsk is 15 km long. Throughout its history, it not only grew in length and width, but also changed it’s name of 14 times. This is one of the last mainline neoclassical ensembles in the world of architecture, one of the longest street in Europe, and a Bidder for inclusion in the List of World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
2. Belarus still applies the death penalty. The ultimate punishment has been completely abolished in all European countries, except for Belarus and Kazakhstan. Capital punishment can be issued for crimes that occur against the state or against individuals.
3. The national Library of Belarus is 72.6 meters high and weighs 115 000 tonnes. Total area - 112,600 m². The building has 22 floors, it can seat about 2,000 readers and features a 500-seat conference hall. As of 2009 it is the only structure in Minsk with a public observation deck.
4. Minsk Botanical Garden is the 3rd largest in Europe, after the Royal Botanic Garden Kew in London, and Real Jardin Botanico in Madrid. The Area of the Botanical Garden is 96 hectares. It dates from 1932 and feature some 9,000 different species.
5. Nobody would guess that in 1939 - 1946 Minsk was the jazz capital of the USSR. During these years, Eddie Rosner, a German Jew who came to Minsk after the manifestation of Hitler's attitude toward Jews, worked in Minsk Art. Since 1946, Jazz was banned in the Soviet Union, and Rosner was sent to the Gulag for 10 years. Since jazz was considered an American movement, all traces of it were oppressed by the soviet authorities.
6. Belarus was one of the first nations in Europe to have its own printed Bible (1517). Belarus’ first printer Frantsysk Skorina started his publishing business in Prague where he printed 23 illustrated Bibles. They were published in the old Belarusian language. In the early 1520s he moved to Vilno where he founded a publishing house. It printed the Small Travel Guide and Book of the Apostles. Frantsysk Skorina's works were distinguished by high print quality, unique illustrations and distinctive typefaces.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Belarus, a former member of the USSR. Today it remains a country with a heavy soviet atmosphere, a state-controlled economy, censorship and fixed elections. However Minsk, the capital of Belarus, is a cosmopolitan city, elegant and well maintained. Tourists in Minsk can find several attractions and generally don’t feel oppressed in any way.

1. The longest street in Belarus - Independence Avenue in Minsk is 15 km long. Throughout its history, it not only grew in length and width, but also changed it’s name of 14 times. This is one of the last mainline neoclassical ensembles in the world of architecture, one of the longest street in Europe, and a Bidder for inclusion in the List of World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
2. Belarus still applies the death penalty. The ultimate punishment has been completely abolished in all European countries, except for Belarus and Kazakhstan. Capital punishment can be issued for crimes that occur against the state or against individuals.
3. The national Library of Belarus is 72.6 meters high and weighs 115 000 tonnes. Total area - 112,600 m². The building has 22 floors, it can seat about 2,000 readers and features a 500-seat conference hall. As of 2009 it is the only structure in Minsk with a public observation deck.
4. Minsk Botanical Garden is the 3rd largest in Europe, after the Royal Botanic Garden Kew in London, and Real Jardin Botanico in Madrid. The Area of the Botanical Garden is 96 hectares. It dates from 1932 and feature some 9,000 different species.
5. Nobody would guess that in 1939 - 1946 Minsk was the jazz capital of the USSR. During these years, Eddie Rosner, a German Jew who came to Minsk after the manifestation of Hitler's attitude toward Jews, worked in Minsk Art. Since 1946, Jazz was banned in the Soviet Union, and Rosner was sent to the Gulag for 10 years. Since jazz was considered an American movement, all traces of it were oppressed by the soviet authorities.
6. Belarus was one of the first nations in Europe to have its own printed Bible (1517). Belarus’ first printer Frantsysk Skorina started his publishing business in Prague where he printed 23 illustrated Bibles. They were published in the old Belarusian language. In the early 1520s he moved to Vilno where he founded a publishing house. It printed the Small Travel Guide and Book of the Apostles. Frantsysk Skorina's works were distinguished by high print quality, unique illustrations and distinctive typefaces.

This is the result of a one week trip to Minsk. My Vlog includes footage from nightclubs, Belarusian girls, the beautiful city of Minsk, police brutality, the surveillance State, world war II museum, medieval swordfights and more.
Minsk is a fantastic picturesque city with Europe's most beautiful girls. It is safe and easy to navigate from one part of the city to the next using the metro system. I also found Belorussians to be most welcoming and friendly with tourists. The exception is people who work for the government. They are mean and ridiculously rude. Stay away from them at all costs.
To travel to Minsk you must obtain an invitation to the country which a travel agency can help you with. Apartments in cities around Belarus are pricier than in her neighboring countries. I recommend cheap hotels that you can book upon arrival.
For food I had a hard time in most restaurants. Go to the buffets as they are better. i know that the country has a terrible reputation. I do feel it is rather undeserved though. Yes there is repression but it did at least appear a safe country to live in without starving people.
I filmed this Vlog over a couple of days and did my best to give a realistic impression of what it's like for a tourist to visit Minsk and Belarus. I also filmed a little around the city of Gomel but didn't really come across anything of major significance.
I travelled through the country by train. The trains were old and Soviet but comfortable and extremely cheap. I highly recommend going by rail when traveling anywhere within the country of Belarus.
The nightclubs in Minsk are amongst the best in all of Europe. Belorussian girls are absolutely stunning, extremely fit, beautiful and very friendly. I recommend anyone, backpackers and business travelers alike making their way through Europe to visit the country.
