"South Ossetia declared independence from the former Soviet state of Georgia.
Simon crosses the front line, past Russian tanks and into this breakaway state, where paranoia greets his every step. BBC keeps going with faulty BBC reports, this one falsly states that Adjaria, the 3rd autonomous area, also broke away from Georgia.
He is shown graveyards in a school playground and joins a birthday drink with troops returning from the front... before being chased out by the local KGB."

Planning on joining in the excitement of the Sochi Olympics? Why stop there? Did you know that there is an exquisite little country located just ten kilometers from Sochi? It's Abkhazia, a small republic that recently gained its independence in 1991. Located on Russia's southern border their flag, decorated with a red cannon from the medieval kingdom supports a hand that wards off enemies as well as greeting visitors. The seven stars, a sacred number, represent the seven historical regions while the green and white stripes, again seven, are a reminder of the Abkhaz people and the tolerance of religions.

Маршруты отличаются друг от друга не только по тематике, но и по темпераменту и видам активностей. Мы стараемся делать путешествия максимально интенсивными. Relaxing music with Black sea beaches in Abkhazia 2014
TBILISI -- Lela Avidzba is a rarity -- an Abkhaz who is fluent in the Abkhaz language.
According to most estimates, up to one-third of Abkhaz cannot speak their language, even on a basic level. Even fewer can read or write it. The dominant language in Abkhazia -- which broke from Georgian rule after a bitter war in the early 1990s, and saw its de facto independence recognized by Moscow last August -- is Russian.
Avidzba's mastery of her intricate native tongue -- with its bewildering, 64-letter alphabet and complex phonetics, is remarkable. Making it all the more remarkable is the fact that she is actually half-Georgian, and lives not in Abkhazia, but the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.
Hers was one of the thousands of families torn apart by the 1992-93 war between Georgian forces and Abkhaz nationalists looking to break free from Tbilisi's control. About 15,000 people were killed, and hundreds of thousands of ethnic Georgians were expelled from Abkhaz territory.
Avidzba, an effusive 32-year-old with light brown hair, was born to a Georgian mother and an Abkhaz father, was a teenager living in the Abkhaz capital Sukhumi when the war broke out. Her parents sent her to Tbilisi for safety, but remained in Abkhazia themselves.
Avidzba's father, Sergei, died in 2006. Her mother, Luisa, still lives in Sukhumi, but Avidzba, who is no longer welcome in her homeland, is unable to see her.
Avidzba was detained and interrogated for several days while visiting her ailing father in Sukhumi. Since her father's death, Abkhaz authorities have denied Avidzba permission to visit her relatives in the territory altogether.
-Torn Between Nations-
Avidzba says that the walls that have been erected between the Abkhaz and Georgian peoples are as artificial as those separating her family.
Lela Avidzba doesn't know when she'll see her mother again."We lived together our whole lives. Abkhaz and Georgian cultures are indivisible," Avidzba says.
"There are common traditions and mixed families. My mother is Georgian and my father was Abkhaz. This is the worst possible situation for a family to be in. Both sides are a part of me."
Easily conversant in Georgian and Abkhaz -- as well as in Russian -- Avidzba has worked tirelessly to bridge the gaps between her two nations.
She is raising her son Nikolas to speak both Georgian and Abkhaz. As a spokeswoman for the Georgian government, she is one of the most prominent Abkhaz in Tbilisi, and even hosts a talk show in the Abkhaz language on Georgian television.
-Inching Toward Reconciliation-
In 2004, together with her mother, Avidzba helped organize a visit to Georgia for Abkhaz children who lost parents in the 1992-93 war. She said the children relaxed at a spa, toured Tbilisi, and met Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
"When the children left -- and they were little children -- they wrote letters saying, 'Georgia, we love you and want to come back,'" Avidzba says. "But unfortunately, [in Abkhazia] they hear something completely different [about Georgians]."
Avidzba says she harbors no illusions that such gestures of reconciliation can overcome the deep animosity Abkhaz feel for Georgians, but she is nevertheless determined to persevere.
"I don't know whether it was due to a lack of strength, or euphoria [over independence], but nobody was able to stand up and prevent what has happened," Avidzba says.
"Time is not on our side. A new generation is growing up [in Abkhazia] that has never seen a Georgian and doesn't know what they're really like. For them, a Georgian is simply an enemy."

A Trip To Abkhazia, Travel document and pictures of Abkhazia
Abkhazia is a small republic that recently gained its independence in 1991. Located on Russia's southern border their flag, decorated with a red cannon from the medieval kingdom supports a hand that wards off enemies as well as greeting visitors. The seven stars, a sacred number, represent the seven historical regions while the green and white stripes, again seven, are a reminder of the Abkhaz peo

ABKHAZIA - LAND IN LIMBO
Abkhazia broke away from Georgia in 1992, and is now only recognised by 4 countries. Although Russian tourists are slowly returning to the region, the breakaway republic remains a near-unknown destination for Western travellers.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Georgia. The capital of Georgia is Tblisi, a wonderful blend of old and new architecture. But where is Georgia? Some say it’s in Asia, but most consider it a part of Europe.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Spoken Georgian (kartvelian) is like no other language you are likely to hear. It belongs to its own ancient linguistic group unlike any other language spoken outside the region. It includes rare sounds that many visitors may never have heard before. Georgian has its own 33-letter alphabet thought to be based on the sort of Aramaic spoken in the time of Jesus. To the untutored eye, the letters look very much alike. But even without understanding it, Georgian writing is beautiful, a myriad of theatrical swirls and flourishes.
2. Take a look at a map and you'll find the former Soviet republic 1,000km east of the Bosphorus, marooned in Asia. One definition of Europe marks the Caucasus Mountains as its border, putting Georgia firmly in Asia. Other definitions place the whole Caucasus region, including Georgia, in Europe which is where most Georgians feel it belongs.
3. Georgia isn't called Georgia by Georgians. They call their country Sakartvelo. One theory suggests that the origins of the country's name come from the Middle Ages when Christian crusaders swept through the region on their way to the Holy Land. At that time, it was part of the Persian Empire and the people here were known as "Gurj". They were also devotees of St George.
4. The little streets of Tbilisi makes you forget about Paris or Venice! Cute little alleys and streets all over the city. It definitely has its charm and you could almost say Tbilisi is the Paris of Eurasia.
5. Ever heard of Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili? Born in Gori, he became one of the most important rulers in the history of mankind. After becoming the leader of the Soviet Union, he ordered the imprisonment and execution of millions, starved Ukrainians to submission, lead his country to victory in WW2 and brought most of eastern Europe under the control of Moscow. You may know him by his Russian name: Joseph Stalin.
6. Georgia contains 2 de facto independent regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which gained limited international recognition after the 2008 Russo-Georgian War. Georgia and a major part of the international community consider the regions to be part of Georgia's sovereign territory under Russian military occupation.
7. Georgia launched a large-scale military operation against South Ossetia during the night of 7–8 August 2008 to "restore constitutional order" in the region. 11,000 soldiers took part in the general Georgian offensive. Russia officially sent troops across the border, claiming to be defending both peacekeepers and South Ossetian civilians. In 5 days of fighting, the Russian forces pushed back Georgian troops and largely destroyed Georgia’s military infrastructure. Russia recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia on 26 August 2008. In response, the Georgian government cut diplomatic relations with Russia.

There are almost 200 official countries in the world. But there are dozens more breakaway states which are determined to be separate and independent.
The breakaway states have their own rulers, parliaments or warlords, and are home to millions of people, but they're not officially recognised as proper countries by the rest of the world.
Several have their own armies and police forces, and issue passports and even postage stamps which the rest of the world ignores. All of the breakaway states have declared independence after violent struggles with a neighbouring state.
Some now survive peacefully, but others are a magnet for terrorists and weapons smuggling, and have armies ready for a fight. Several could be at the centre of future wars which threaten their regions and the wider world.
In a world of easy adventure tourism, Simon visits breakaway states & unrecognized nations which don't usually feature on the tourist trail: Somaliland, Transniestria, South Ossetia, Taiwan, Abkhazia, Ajaria and Nagorno-Karabkh
Welcome to Places That Don't Exist...
Georgia, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Adjaria
The former Soviet state of Georgia has a particular problem with breakaway states. After independence from Moscow three parts of the country -- South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Adjaria, broke away from Georgia. Conflicts broke out, thousands were killed, and the whole region has suffered ever since. The new President of Georgia, who Simon meets in a lift, is trying to re-unify the country, but he faces a difficult task.
Simon travels across the frontline to visit South Ossetia -- a self-declared country which has had its own flag, army and government for 12 years. The Ossetian people speak a different language to Georgians, and their government has vowed to fight to the death rather than rejoin the Georgian fold.
Simon persuades a tough Ossetian Foreign Ministry official to let him have a look around. Tensions are high between Georgia and South Ossetia, and the Ossetians are suspicious of foreigners, particularly when a government guide tells locals in the market that Simon's from London, America. After his nationality is explained people become friendlier, although locals are tense because everyone has someone they love on the dangerous Georgian frontline and war is imminent. Everywhere Simon goes he's followed by state security.
Back in Georgia proper Simon realises war is close when he finds a troop train packed with soldiers and tanks. He's chased away by armed guards.
Heading west to the former breakaway region of Adjaria, Simon visits the palatial home of the former dictator. His son used to race a Lambourghini along the main street of the region, much to the anger of locals earning an average £15 a month.
Elsewhere in Georgia, Simon and his BBC crew are the first film unit ever allowed inside a major former Soviet military base. In a chilling scene, they find thousands of tonnes of explosives unguarded and huge working missiles, any of which could be stolen by criminals or terrorists, and which are capable of destroying skyscrapers.

Abkhazia is a small republic that recently gained its independence in 1991. Located on Russia's southern border their flag, decorated with a red cannon from the medieval kingdom supports a hand that wards off enemies as well as greeting visitors. The seven stars, a sacred number, represent the seven historical regions while the green and white stripes, again seven, are a reminder of the Abkhaz people and the tolerance of religions.
In this video you can see so many beautiful places of Abkhazia. If you like to see the beauty of this country, we really suggest you to see this video.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia made official statement with regard to the visit of Mr. Putin to the occupied territory of Georgia, namely in Abkhazia. We consider it as yet another provocative act on the part of the Russian Federation, yet another link in the long chain of so-called visits, of hiring Russian officials to the occupied territory of Georgia. We consider it as yet another violation by the Russian side or every single normal principle of international law and international obligations assumed by Russia, in particular and first of all - 6.65 agreement signed with the mediation of the European Union on August 12th, 2008. On the other hand we believe that Russia once again challenges the international community, which is absolutely impermissible, especially on the part of a country which pretends to play a major role in international relationships."

The Georgian foreign ministry on Wednesday sharply criticised Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's visit to Abkhazia, a breakaway Georgian region whose unilateral independence was recognised by Moscow last year.
Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister, Alexander Nalbandov, believed visits by high-ranking Russian officials to the "occupied territory of Georgia" undermined international law.
"We believe that Russia once again challenges the international community, which is absolutely impermissible, especially on the part of a country which pretends to play a major role in international relationships," Nalbandov told journalists.
Putin visited Abkhazia on Wednesday, vowing to provide economic and military aid. He met officials of the breakaway government in Sukhumi.
Putin's visit came on the anniversary of the cease-fire in last year's war with Georgia, during which Russian troops and separatist forces ousted Georgian forces from the territory of Abkhazia and another breakaway Georgian province, South Ossetia.
Speaking to Abkhazian media, Putin said Russia would spend at least 15 (b) billion roubles (465 million US dollars) next year to build military bases in Abkhazia and tighten the borders of the separatist Georgian region.
Putin also travelled on Wednesday to Abkhazia's capital, Sukhumi, to meet officials of its breakaway government.
After the war, Russia recognised both regions as independent, a move either denounced or ignored by almost all other countries. Putin's pledge on military spending underlines Russia's firm intention to keep both regions outside of Georgian control.
In recent weeks, both Russia and Georgia have trumpeted their competing versions of which side started the war.
Russia says it was responding to a Georgian assault on South Ossetia, whose residents mostly have Russian passports. Georgia says it was acting to repel invading Russian troops and accuses Russia of scheming to take over all of Georgia.
