Contrary to popular belief children are able to learn as many languages as they are consistently exposed to (theoretically all of them)
This means that the primary constraint for a child concerning the number of languages it can learn isn't its brain power but rather the amount of exposure it has to any given language
Since it would be hard to consistently expose a child to multiple native speakers from numerous languages, linguists have determined that learning 4 languages simultaneously is the most realistic maximum
Once again contrary to popular belief, children are not confused by learning multiple languages. Although they do mix them in the beginning this quickly sorts itself out as time goes by
Babies are actually capable of discerning every potential sound of every human language
This "ability", or window of opportunity, quickly fades around 5 years of age and is known as the critical period.

In this brand-new talk, introduced by Lord Melvyn Bragg, Steven argues that style still matters: in communicating effectively, in enhancing the spread of ideas, in earning a reader’s trust and, not least, in adding beauty to the world.
Steven Pinker is an experimental psychologist and one of the world’s foremost writers on language, mind, and human nature. He is Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University and conducts research on language and cognition but also writes for publications such as the New York Times, Time, and is the author of many books, including The Language Instinct and How the Mind Works.
Melvyn Bragg is a broadcaster, writer and novelist. He was made a Life Peer (Lord Bragg of Wigton) in 1998. Since then he has hosted over 660 episodes of In Our Time on subjects ranging from Quantum Gravity to Truth. He was presenter of the BBC radio series The Routes of English, a history of the English language. He is currently Chancellor of the University of Leeds

13.000 years ago a large comet struck earth which must have looked like a fiery serpent flying through the sky because the force of gravity stretched it out into a chain of comet fragments. Is this catastrophe the origin of all those myths and legends about a fire spitting dragon or winged serpent?

Can language spread be modeled using computational techniques designed to trace the diffusion of viruses? As recently announced in the New York Times, a team of biologists claims to have solved one of the major riddles of human prehistory, the origins of the Indo-European language family, by applying methodologies from epidemiology. In actuality, this research, published in Science, does nothing of the kind. As the talk presented here shows, the assumptions on which it rests are demonstrably false, the data that it uses are woefully incomplete and biased, and the model that it employs generates error at every turn, undermining the knowledge generated by more than two centuries of research in historical linguistics and threatening our understanding of the human past.

J.R.R. Tolkien, wildly popular for his authorship of the fantasy trilogy "The Lord of the Rings," was by profession an unprepossessing Medievalist and historical linguist.
In this lecture, delivered at Western Washington University Nov. 14, 2012, Edward Vajda, a professor in the Modern and Classical Languages Department at Western, discusses "Tolkien's Imaginary Languages."
Tolkien's extensive knowledge of world languages both ancient and modern lent itself to his creation of the artificial languages that add so much realistic depth to his fictional writing. Vajda's presentation will describe the languages Tolkien created for his Middle Earth by revealing their connection with the actual spoken languages he studied during his academic career.
Watch this lecture to explore the ingenious sound symbolism and etymological connotations employed by this master storyteller—and learn a great many things about the real languages of Eurasia along the way.

A course in Cognitive Linguistics: Metaphor
This is the second episode of a course in Cognitive Linguistics, which addresses the topic of Conceptual Metaphor Theory.

As computers become more and more present in our lives, making our interactions with them more intuitive and natural is essential. Computational linguistics refers to the field of computer science that uses computer science to do interesting things with natural language. Examples of large computational linguistic projects are Siri, the Jeopardy winner Watson, and Google Translate. This seminar will give a brief introduction to the field, and will include Python demos to show the potential of that area.

This is the fourth episode of a course in Cognitive Linguistics. This episode addresses the topic of polysemy, which describes the phenomenon that a single linguistic form maps onto several related meanings. I contrast polysemy with homonomy and vagueness, and I go over some psycholinguistic and corpus-based work that investigates the semantic structure of polysemous meaning networks.

This is the second episode of a course in Cognitive Linguistics, which addresses the topic of Conceptual Metaphor Theory. This theory holds that metaphor is understanding one thing in terms of another thing. Metaphor is thus a matter of thought, not a matter of words. By now, there is psychological evidence that supports this view.
