The Iraqi army pushes deeper into Ramadi as it presses ahead with its massive offensive aimed at fully liberating the city of Ramadi from the Daesh terrorist group.
Iraqi military officials say the army has fully freed a district in the north of the city. At least nine terrorists were killed in the operation. The Iraqi forces are now trying to purge residential areas. The Iraqi army had, for months, been preparing to launch their final attack on Ramadi which fell to Daesh also known as ISIL in May. Initial efforts to retake Ramadi started in April after the army managed to drive the terrorists out of Tikrit. The operation, however, was hampered by the lack of reinforcements and the explosives planted by Daesh around the city. Ramadi is the capital of Anbar, which is Iraq’s largest province.

Saddam Hussein oversaw an impromptu parade of Iraqi tanks, warplanes and missiles in Baghdad on Sunday.
The spectacle was seen as a show of support for the Palestinian uprising against Israel.
The ceremony was billed as "The Call of Jerusalem Day" and featured a truck bearing a statue resembling Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque, the focus of an emotional dispute between Israel and the Palestinians.
Iraq normally celebrates Army Day on January 6, and it was unclear whether another parade would be held on that day.
Saddam signalled the start of the procession by firing two rifle shots from the presidential box, which was positioned opposite a new statue of himself.
Iraqi warplanes, helicopters, bombers, missiles and tanks were exhibited in the parade which took place in Baghdad's Grand Celebrations Ground.
All of the missiles in the parade had a 90-mile range, and are thus permitted under U-N Security Council resolutions passed after the 1991 Gulf War.
Thousands of troops participated, including the elite Republican Guards and the paramilitary force known as Saddam's Fedayeen.
The ceremony's billing as "The Call of Jerusalem Day" is reminiscent of Iraq's name for the day its forces entered Kuwait in August 1990.
They called that "The Call Day" to indicate its forces were responding to a call from Kuwaitis for liberation.

In the past several years, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), has forcefully taken a stronghold in regions throughout the Middle East, and the prominence of their singular brand of terror continues to expand on a daily basis. Few of the world's inhabitants have been immune to frequent news reports of the mass killings, savage beheadings and other acts of blood curdling horror perpetrated by this much feared terrorist organization.
The frightening and timely new documentary ISIS: On the Frontline, produced by Ahlulbayt TV, places us at the epicenter of this ever-evolving cancer, and follows the brave Iraqi citizens who have dared to stand united in their defiance of ISIS.
"There is no doubt that when ISIS tried to take over certain parts of Iraq, their aim was to seize the whole country regardless of the religion followed," attests Sayed Ammar Al-Hakim, the President of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, during the course of the film. According to the testimony of Al-Hakim and others, ISIS militants have shown no favoritism to any particular religion or sect, and have indiscriminately massacred anyone who stands in opposition to their rule. In response to this threat, average Iraqi citizens have been encouraged to enlist in the military to defend their position within their homeland.
The motivations behind these defensive strategies are affirmed by an inside look into just a few of the atrocities committed by ISIS on Iraqi soil. The film's chief witness to these atrocities is Thaher Abdel Kareem, the survivor of a haunting and vicious kidnapping at the hands of the terrorist group.
For viewers who have considered the threat of ISIS only from the outsider's perspective driven by western media outlets, ISIS: On the Frontline offers a valuable portrait of the war being waged on the inside. The challenges faced by those who chose to combat this brutalizing threat are vast, and much blood will be shed before an end is reached. But the drive to defend against the ISIS threat speaks to the very foundations of humanity itself.
"The war is not between the Shia and the Sunni," says interview subject and Iraqi politician Redha Jawad Taki. "This is a war between savages and civilized people."

Historic video footage of the worlds funnest information minister with claims the US military was defeated by the Iraqi military led by former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi Army is the ground force component of the armed forces of the Republic of Iraq, having been active in various incarnations throughout the 20th century and 21st century.
The Iraqi Army in its modern form was first created by the United Kingdom during the inter-war period of de facto British control of Mandatory Iraq. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Iraqi Army was rebuilt along American lines with enormous amounts of U.S. military assistance at every level. Because of the Iraqi insurgency that began shortly after the invasion, the Iraqi Army was designed to initially be a counter-insurgency force.[3][4] With the US withdrawal in December 2011, Iraqi forces have assumed full responsibility for security.[5] A New York Times article suggested that, between 2004 and 2014, the USA had provided the Iraqi Army with $25billion in training and equipment in addition to an even larger sum from the Iraqi treasury.[6]
Invasion of Kuwait and the Persian Gulf War[edit]
By the eve of the Invasion of Kuwait which led to the 1991 Persian Gulf War, the Army was estimated to number 1,000,000 men.[30] Just before the Persian Gulf War began, the force comprised grouped into 47 infantry divisions plus nine armoured and mechanised divisions, grouped in seven corps.[31] This gave a total of about 56 army divisions, and total land force divisions reached 68 when the twelve Iraqi Republican Guard divisions were included.[32] Although it was said at the time in Western media that Iraqi troops numbered approximately 545,000 (even 600,000) today most experts think that both the qualitative and quantitative descriptions of the Iraqi army at the time were exaggerated, as they included both temporary and auxiliary support elements. Many of the Iraqi troops were also young, under-resourced and poorly trained conscripts. Hussein did not trust the army; among counterbalancing security forces was the Iraqi Popular Army.
The widespread support for Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war meant Iraq had military equipment from almost every major dealer of the world's weapons market. This resulted in a lack of standardization in this large heterogeneous force, which additionally suffered from poor training and poor motivation. The majority of Iraqi armoured forces still used old Chinese Type 59s and Type 69s, Soviet-made T-55s from the 1950s and 1960s, and some T-72s from the 1970s in 1991. These machines were not equipped with up-to-date equipment, such as thermal sights or laser rangefinders, and their effectiveness in modern combat was very limited. The Iraqis failed to find an effective countermeasure to the thermal sights and the sabot rounds used by the M1 Abrams, Challenger 1 and the other Coalition tanks. This equipment enabled Coalition tanks to effectively engage and destroy Iraqi tanks from more than three times the distance that Iraqi tanks could engage.
The Iraqi tank crews used old, cheap steel penetrators against the advanced Chobham Armour of these US and British tanks, with disastrous results. The Iraqi forces also failed to utilize the advantage that could be gained from using urban warfare — fighting within Kuwait City — which could have inflicted significant casualties on the attacking forces. Urban combat reduces the range at which fighting occurs and can negate some of the technological advantage that well equipped forces enjoy. Iraqis also tried to use Soviet military doctrine, but the implementation failed due to the lack of skill of their commanders and the preventive air strikes of the USAF and RAF on communication centers and bunkers.
While the exact number of Iraqi combat casualties has yet to be firmly determined, sources agree that the losses were substantial. Immediate estimates said up to 100,000 Iraqis were killed. More recent estimates indicate that Iraq probably sustained between 20,000 and 35,000 fatalities, though other figures still maintain fatalities could have been as high as 200,000.[33] A report commissioned by the U.S. Air Force, estimated 10,000-12,000 Iraqi combat deaths in the air campaign and as many as 10,000 casualties in the ground war.[34] This analysis is based on Iraqi prisoner of war reports. It is known that between 20,000 and 200,000 Iraqi soldiers were killed. According to the Project on Defense Alternatives study,[35] 3,664 Iraqi civilians and between 20,000 and 26,000 military personnel were killed in the conflict. 75,000 Iraqi soldiers were wounded in the fighting.
During the 1990s[edit]
The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated the Army's composition immediately after the 1991 War as 6 'armoured'/'mechanised' divisions, 23 infantry divisions, 8 Republican Guard divisions and four Republican Guard internal security divisions.[36]
wn.com/Worlds Funnest Information Minister Claims US Military Was Defeated By Iraqi Army

Iraqi military commanders said on Monday they had retaken a hospital in southern Tikrit as they progress towards the centre of the city. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief journalists, said the military's three-pronged offensive is making slow progress as it attempts to take the city because of booby traps and suicide bomb attacks.

US Defense Secretary Ash Carter admits that American aircraft have mistakenly carried out an airstrike that killed Iraqi security forces near the city of Fallujah.
Carter made the remarks while on a visit aboard the USS Kearsarge, an amphibious assault ship supporting the US-led coalition missions in Iraq and Syria. Iraq said earlier that a US airstrike had killed 10 soldiers and injured dozens more. According to Iraqi officials, Americans deliberately hinder the advance of Iraqi forces into Daesh-controlled areas in and around the city of Fallujah in Anbar province. Lawmaker Hakim al-Zamili has also blamed the so-called US-led coalition for the inability of Iraqi troops to enter Ramadi and Fallujah. He further accused US forces of launching airstrikes or dropping aerial packages that provide weapons and equipment to Daesh.

Iraqi forces press ahead with an operation to retake the western city of Ramadi from Daesh despite numerous obstacles placed by the terrorist group.
A spokesman for the Joint Iraqi Operations Command says the military is nearly half a kilometer away from the government compound in Ramadi. Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi says the armed forces will move to retake the northern city of Mosul from Daesh once they liberate Ramadi. The operation to retake Ramadi started months ago with Iraqi forces cutting ISIL supply lines to parts of Anbar province before gradually closing in on the city. Terrorists took over the provincial capital of Anbar in May, forcing tens of thousands of civilians to flee.

RAMADI, IRAQ — After weeks of intense fighting, Iraq's military has declared victory over the Islamic State in the Iraqi city of Ramadi. Backed by coalition air strikes, Iraqi troops regained control of the main government complex on Sunday.
The head of military operations in Anbar, Gen Ismail al-Mahlawi, told the Associated Press that retreating IS militants still control parts of the city. This is a devastating defeat for ISIS, who took control of Ramadi in May.
The news comes just one day after Daesh's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, released an audio message calling for all Muslims to join the fight. The responses were hilarious: Umar Aftab Butt said maybe next week. Hassaan Munir was a little too busy with Fallout 4. Aly Ashraf has finals this week. And Saadat Ali Zia went to Star Wars instead.

BAGHDAD -- As Iraqi forces close in on the western city of Ramadi, thousands of civilians are effectively being held hostage inside by Islamic State militants who want to use them as human shields. Iraqi forces cut the Islamic State group's last supply line into Ramadi in November, surrounding the city and making it almost impossible for the militants to send in reinforcements. But for thousands of residents trapped inside the Sunni city, life has become even harder as the militants grow increasingly paranoid, residents said. All said conditions inside had deteriorated to their worst since Islamic State overran it earlier this year.
“Daesh fighters are becoming more hostile and suspicious. They prevent us from leaving houses. Everyone who goes out against orders is caught and investigated," said Abu Ahmed. "We feel we’re living inside a sealed casket."
Ramadi, a provincial capital in the fertile Euphrates valley just a short drive west of Baghdad, was Islamic State's biggest conquest since last year, and reversing it would be a major victory for the Iraqi government and its allies that include both the United States and Iran.
The description of harsh rule by Islamic State fighters could also indicate disquiet among Sunni Muslim residents, some of whom switched sides to help U.S. forces defeat a precursor of Islamic State in the city during the Iraq War.
Sheikh Khatab al-Amir who is still in contact with members of his tribe inside Ramadi said the insurgents were restricting movement there. “The insurgents have sectioned Ramadi into a group of smaller segments and do not permit the passage of civilians from one area to the other because they suspect anyone at the moment of being an informant for the security forces," he said. More people were cooperating with the security forces as the insurgents' treatment became harsher, the sheikh said.

As the Iraqi government threatens to expel all foreign mercenaries following the Blackwater shootout, the role of private military contractors is once again in the spotlight. There's no denying that the rise of the private military contractor is transforming the way we wage war. They earn four times more than regular soldiers, act with impunity and - in Iraq - outnumber all non-US soldiers combined. ‘Private Armies’ follows the training and deployment of these men. From skidding around a racing track, practising escaping from kidnappers, to dodging bullets in Baghdad, it’s an eye-opening look at life as a private soldier.

According to a contractor with firsthand knowledge of the incident, the three were armed only with pistols. One of the Americans had previously been cautioned about leaving the base without guards. Now U.S. officials say they fear the three are either in the hands of an Iraqi militia group, or a criminal gang that may trade them to the so-called Islamic State.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi hailed what he calls the “liberation” of Ramadi from Islamic State control. But his country still faces huge challenges to reclaim all of its territory. After a seven-month siege, the Iraqi city of Ramadi is mostly back in control of Iraqi security forces. Thousands of ground troops successfully pushed out Islamic State fighters and have reclaimed 80 percent of the downtown area of Ramadi. Iraqi forces are now working to secure the streets and free residents held hostage by jihadists. Islamic State still controls much of northern and western Iraq, including Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city. Al-Abadi vowed to free the country of Islamic State this year. The Heat interviewed experts about the recent operation in Ramadi, where Iraqi Security forces managed to reclaim the city from Islamic State fighters: Dr. Mowaffak al-Rubaie. He served as the Iraqi National Security Advisor and is currently a member of the Iraqi parliament. Hiwa Osman. He’s an Iraqi Kurdish journalist and commentator.

STORY: Iraqi troops battled Islamic State fighters located in northern Ramadi on Saturday (January 2), after the provincial capital was recaptured from the militants in a victory hailed as a turning point by the Iraqi government.
About 700 Islamic State fighters are suspected to be hiding in the centre and the outskirts of the city, according to the U.S.-led coalition.
An Iraqi flag was positioned near Ramadi's hospital as soldiers cleared recaptured areas from explosives.
"Iraqi counter-terrorism forces are clearing the streets from explosives, in addition to doing humanitarian work by rescuing besieged families and providing the necessary medical and food aid to them," said Salam Hussein, an Iraqi counter-terrorism unit major.
More than 50 families being used as "human shields" by Islamic State militants in Ramadi were evacuated by the Iraqi military on Tuesday (December 29), security officials said.
The provincial capital in the fertile Euphrates River valley west of Baghdad is the biggest city to have been recaptured from Islamic State, and the first retaken by Iraq's army since it collapsed in the path of the militants' advance 18 months ago.
The Iraqi government says its rebuilt army will soon march on Islamic State's main Iraqi stronghold Mosul further north, and defeat the group in Iraq in 2016.
A military sergeant, who wished not to be named, said counter-terrorism units were aiming to reach the district of Sufiya by Monday (January 4).
"On our left we have the Albu Farraj bridge and we've put a team of snipers in Anbar's hospital and, God willing, tomorrow we will be in Sufiya. We are the counter-terrorism unit, we have proved this. It doesn't matter how cold or rainy it is," he said.
A key part of the strategy for the government is to put Ramadi in the hands of local Sunni tribal figures, an echo of the 2006-2007 "surge" campaign by U.S. forces at the height of the 2003-2011 U.S. war in Iraq, in which Washington secured the help of Sunni tribes against a precursor of Islamic State.
Some 4 million people have fled Islamic State-held territory in Iraq, most of them Sunni Muslims.

An Iraqi military base north of Baghdad was targeted by multiple suicide bombers, who killed at least 15 security troops and injured at least 22 others. The terrorist group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
Two bombers detonated their explosive-rigged vehicles at the western gate of Camp Speicher, a former US base outside the Sunni-majority city of Tikrit, Reuters reported, citing security sources. Three others made it to the part of the base used for training Iraqi police.
IS said the attack targeted Shiite troops stationed at the base.

Canada in Iraq : The Hidden War - the fifth estate
One of the largest decisions weighing on the shoulders of prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau is what role, if any, should Canada play in the war against ISIS. And how will Canadians know whether their efforts are having the intended results? Do we really know what our troops are doing in Iraq? Do we even know whether Coalition airstrikes are hitting intended targets?Bob McKeown reports from

Battlefield Iraq Heavy Clashes And Fighting Between Insurgents And Iraqi Army In The Anbar Province. Heavy Fighting Firefights And Clashes In Iraqs Anbar Province. Since 2014 the Anbar Province is place of fierce fighting between Sunni Iraqi Militias and the Iraqi Army. The main area of the clashes are the citys Ramadi and Falluja where a strong sunni population is located.
According to Officials and witnesses, the Iraq government mainly has lost control over the strategic citys, west of Baghdad.
The renewed violence in the Sunni province has raised concern about the stability of the government amid dueling claims by the terror group and security forces over who was in control of Falluja and Ramadi.
Al-Qaeda black flags have been seen on government and police vehicles captured by the fighters.
The army has besieged Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, and has launched air strikes on the city.
Security forces backed by tanks on battled militants in Iraq's Anbar province, where fighting has displaced thousands and sparked warnings of rights abuses and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Some of the most significant fighting appeared to be in Falluja, where the U.S. military fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war, with militants planting al Qaeda flags on buildings.
Gunmen calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, took to a stage before thousands of Sunnis following Friday prayers in Falluja.
The takeover of Fallujah and parts of Ramadi is the first time that tribal fighters have exercised such open control in major Iraqi cities since the height of the bloody insurgency that followed the US-led invasion of 2003.
The fighting has left more than a hundred people dead and forced thousands of Falluja's residents to flee the city, to Baghdad, northern Iraq and the southern city of Karbala, where Shiite leaders are hosting the displaced families in housing built for religious pilgrims.
The United States said it would speed up its deliveries of missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq as the Baghdad government battles a resurgence of Al-Qaeda linked militants.
Iraq's prime minister has urged residents and tribes in Anbar province to "expel" al-Qaeda-linked fighters to avoid an all-out battle - remarks that may signal an imminent military move to retake the former insurgent stronghold.
The Insurgents mainly ambushing Iraqi Army convoys in urban areas and attacking small check points and police stations with small arms, rpgs and ieds. The Iraqi Army repels with Air Strikes and armored infantry units.
The ISIL rebels were trying to bring the battle to the cities of Anbar and Fallujah because there's no security there and they know they will be thoroughly defeated in the desert.
The Iraqi civil war never really ended it just went off the boil for a while. Last year, the heat was turned back to high, with the number of civilian deaths from political violence doubling to roughly 8,000 people over the previous year, the highest civilian death toll since at least 2008.
Officials have blamed the upsurge in violence to a resurgent Al-Qaeda
emboldened by the civil war in neighbouring Syria, but the government has itself faced criticism for not doing enough to address the concerns of Iraq's disaffected Sunni Arab minority ahead of April elections.

Published on Feb 1, 2015
The rise of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in vast swathes of territories in Syria and Iraq, and the US-led military response to it, have introduced another complex dimension to an oil-rich but already very volatile Middle East. The old correlation of forces in support of maintaining the status quo, especially following the Iranian revolution more than 35 years ago, has been changing.
A set of new alignments and realignments along multiple regional fault-lines, including sectarian divisions and geopolitical rivalries at different levels, has come to redefine the region and possibly change its traditional political and territorial contours. IS has confronted all the regional states, from the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with a common enemy. Yet, it is the United States and its Western allies that have taken the lead in launching a military intervention to ‘degrade and eliminate’ IS, despite lacking a laudable past record in this respect.
This raises a number of questions. Should the problem of IS have been left to the regional actors to handle? Whilst IS may be containable, can it be defeated? Even if IS is eliminated, what guarantee is there that another extremist group won’t replace it? Can IS become a franchise, as al-Qaeda has? What is the possible best way to deal with religious extremism in the Middle East? What can be expected of the on-going air campaign against IS in terms of its consequences for the region, and the US and its allies?
This conversation looks at these questions in an attempt to unpack the nature of the mess that is the Middle East – a region so turbulent and yet so rich from which the world cannot simply disentangle itself.

EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi
Last summer, the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swept from Syria into northern Iraq, routing Iraqi security forces and seizing the city of Mosul. Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress.
The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid accusations that they have harmed Sunnis in areas that they control has led many to fear that the militias threaten the country's fragile sectarian and political balance.
VICE News traveled to Iraq in December to witness firsthand how Shia militias are taking the fight to the Islamic State, and to document the fallout of their controversial rise to power.

Gulliver and Tate are young recruits of the British Army who are serving the peace mission in Iraq. In the wake of the war, it is tough to maintain peace inside the country. The platoon loses hope when the company captain, Godber, dies in a bomb explosion while on a patrol. Things go for a spiral at the camp as the platoon starts looking for possible suspects. A lot of rules are broken that night. As the platoon returns to England, soldiers go around with different versions of the war. Gulliver, however, lands in trouble as Shelley, his betrayed girlfriend, exposes some war photos to the British Police. Gulliver and Tate are brought to court martial and have to decide whether to choose the truth or not.

21:16 Private organizations pay more than the US military, promising “minimal supervision”.

55:02 How does Halliburton legally steal from the american government and american citizens? By wasting our money in huge amounts, burning expensive equipment, vehicles and even oil in front of Iraqi citizens.
1:01:48 It has been proven that Halliburton steals huge amounts of money from the U.S, so why haven’t we taken action?
1:06:15 Even today, 12 years after the withdrawal of troops and the end of the Iraq war, war profiteers still exist, and they will not go down without a fight. They have money, power and influence.

A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq.
The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State (IS) assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons.
For one month, VICE News embedded with the peshmerga fighters on the Mosul frontline, gaining an insight into the coalition's faltering war against IS through the eyes of the Kurdish volunteers bearing the brunt of the fighting.

In its fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Iraq is now desperate for advanced weapons and help from the United States.
A delegation led by Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abbadi is at the White House trying to convince US President Barack Obama to provide substantial financial and military aid.
For Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, however, defeating ISIL is really just a matter of time, he says.
But there are serious problems. Iraq's army has been weakened over the last few years, so instead the fight is led by predominantly Shia militias known as Popular Mobilisation Forces, and they are at the forefront of the battles in Tikrit, Ramadi and Mosul.
But even as they push back against ISIL, they now have to defend themselves against allegations that they, in turn, are committing atrocities against Sunnis; accusations that al-Jaafari denies.
Iraq of course is not the only area in the Middle East where fighting along sectarian lines is taking place.
In Yemen, a Saudi-led coalition is now waging attacks on the Houthis who are receiving assistance from the Iranians. But Iraqis have decided to stay out of the fight, saying that diplomacy should be given a chance.
Iraq's Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari talks to Al Jazeera about the fight against ISIL, sectarianism and the ongoing confrontations in the Middle East.

One of the largest decisions weighing on the shoulders of prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau is what role, if any, should Canada play in the war against ISIS. And how will Canadians know whether their efforts are having the intended results? Do we really know what our troops are doing in Iraq? Do we even know whether Coalition airstrikes are hitting intended targets?Bob McKeown reports from the front lines of Canada's war in Iraq and Syria.
Deep behind ISIS lines, two brave people agreed to talk to the fifth estate about what life is really like under brutal occupation. One is Rami, a young man who tells us his story as he sees his town destroyed and its citizens terrorized -- fearing all the while that he will be found out and killed. The other, Leila, is a journalist who made a treacherous journey overland to meet our team in Erbil, Iraq. She documents what she says is the little-known toll of civilian casualties from Coalition air strikes. Through their stories, a narrative emerges about fear of ISIS and of the bombs dropped from the sky. The fifth estate explores how the true reality of this war is hidden from all.

The Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991), codenamed Operation Desert Shield (2 August 1990 – 17 January 1991), for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert Storm (17 January 1991 – 28 February 1991) was a war waged by coalition forces from 34 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait.
The war is also known under other names, such as the Persian Gulf War, First Gulf War, Gulf War I, Kuwait War, First Iraq War, or Iraq War a before the term "Iraq War" became identified instead with the 2003 Iraq War (also referred to in the U.S. as "Operation Iraqi Freedom"). Kuwait's invasion by Iraqi troops that began 2 August 1990 was met with international condemnation, and brought immediate economic sanctions against Iraq by members of the U.N. Security Council. U.S. President George H. W. Bush deployed U.S. forces into Saudi Arabia, and urged other countries to send their own forces to the scene. An array of nations joined the Coalition, the largest military alliance since World War II. The great majority of the Coalition's military forces were from the U.S., with Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Egypt as leading contributors, in that order. Saudi Arabia paid around US$36 billion of the US$60 billion cost.
The war was marked by the introduction of live news broadcasts from the front lines of the battle, principally by the U.S. network CNN. The war has also earned the nickname Video Game War after the daily broadcast of images from cameras on board U.S. bombers during Operation Desert Storm.
The initial conflict to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait began with a aerial and naval bombardment on 17 January 1991, continuing for five weeks. This was followed by a ground assault on 24 February. This was a decisive victory for the Coalition forces, who liberated Kuwait and advanced into Iraqi territory. The Coalition ceased its advance, and declared a cease-fire 100 hours after the ground campaign started. Aerial and ground combat was confined to Iraq, Kuwait, and areas on Saudi Arabia's border. Iraq launched Scud missiles against Coalition military targets in Saudi Arabia and against Israel.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 687 passed in April 1991 established formal cease-fire terms. The controversies over enforcing this and subsequent resolutions would contribute to the outbreak of another war 12 years later.
