Daring to be great in the sport of boxing used to be common.
Champions fought other champions, or deserving number one contenders, and the public tuned in.
Fighters didn’t need tune-ups, they sought out true challenges. But when the weight classes began to expand, and more promoters and sanctioning organizations got involved with the sport, real fights became few and far between. The result?
The public stopped caring and boxing fell out of the mainstream.
Enter Amir "King" Khan. The 28-year old from
Bolton, England has been persistent in his pursuit of the toughest challenges, and taking on the biggest fights.
Despite apparent vulnerabilities in his chin, he’s stepped up to face top fighters in each weight class he’s campaigned in. He’s won and lost. He’s knocked people out, and been knocked out. But after all the adversity he’s faced, he’s never lost confidence in himself or his ability to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
After almost three years of trying, and ultimately failing, to land fights with both
Floyd Mayweather and
Manny Pacquiao,
Khan finally finds himself in a marquee pay-per-view event, when he steps into the ring to face
Canelo Alvarez, the Lineal Middleweight
World Champion, this Saturday, May 7.
Complex News took a trip to
Oakland, CA, to visit the Khan training camp and discussed a range of topics, including his youth, fighting
Canelo, and how training under
Virgil Hunter has made him a better fighter.
