Tom Rourke writes:
I watched a video recently about the Oscar categories and one of the things the video suggested was having an award for Best Ensemble Cast. I'm not sure whether it would be a good idea but there are some films, such as Spotlight, in which the entire cast are so good together that for me it doesn't seem like one particular actor shines over another. At the same time the introduction of an award like this could result in a situation where the academy are giving out too many oscars, thus devaluing their importance.

Actor recalls 2002 speech in which she expressed hope that her win might open doors for African-American talent – and accuses Hollywood of failing in its ‘truth-telling’ mission
Halle Berry, the only African-American actress to win an Academy Award for Best Actress, is finally opening up about the Oscar diversity controversy.
Addressing what she called "the elephant in the room" at the 2016 Makers Conference on Tuesday, Berry told reporters that she is "heartbroken" with the continued lack of representation African-Americans receive in Hollywood.
When she won Best Actress for Monsters Ball in 2001, Berry says, "I believed that in that moment, that when I said [in my acceptance speech], 'The door tonight has been opened,' I believed that with every bone in my body that this was going to incite change because this door, this barrier, had been broken.
"And to sit here almost 15 years later, and knowing that another woman of color has not walked through that door, is heartbreaking," she explained. "It's heartbreaking because I thought that moment was bigger than me. It's heartbreaking to start to think maybe it wasn't bigger than me. Maybe it wasn't. And I so desperately felt like it was."
Since Berry's historic win, only three African-American actresses have been nominated for the award: Gabourey Sidibe in 2009 for Precious, Viola Davis in 2011 for The Help and 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis in 2012 for Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Halle Berry & Kevin Huvane | The 2016 MAKERS Conference
Oscar-winner Halle Berry has addressed the Hollywood diversity debate for the first time, saying the film industry has produced films that "aren't truthful" about people of color in America.
Speaking Tuesday to an audience in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., at the Makers Conference, an AOL women's leadership program, Berry said Hollywood's lack of diversity stems from a fundamental lack of honesty, according to the Associated Press.
Filmmakers and actors should tell the truth, she said, "and the films, I think, that are coming out of Hollywood aren't truthful."
Born on August 14, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, Halle Berry is an award-winning actress and former beauty queen. For her performance in Monster's Ball in 2001, she was nominated for a BAFTA Award and won an Academy Award for best actress—becoming the first African-American woman to win the honor. Currently one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood, Berry is also a Revlon spokeswoman.
After enduring a minor head injury, she claimed that she did not remember leaving the scene. As a result of her actions, she was placed on probation, given community service, and fined $13,500.
Undeterred by the challenges faced in her personal life, Berry continued to star in blockbuster hits, including X-Men (2000), the big-budget screen adaptation of the long-running Marvel Comic. In the highly anticipated summer release, Berry's character, Storm, teamed up with fellow mutant heroes played by Anna Paquin and Patrick Stewart.
In the summer of 2001, she co-starred with John Travolta in the action movie Swordfish. Audiences did not respond positively to the film, and publicity for the movie centered mostly around Berry's topless scene, for which the actress was allegedly paid a $500,000 bonus. But Berry also garnered the most positive critical notice of her film career that same year in the dark drama Monster's Ball. Berry played the wife of a death row prisoner (Sean "Puffy" Combs) who becomes romantically involved with a
racist prison guard (Billy Bob Thornton).
The role earned Berry a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a
drama as well as the Academy Award for best actress. In her emotional
acceptance speech, Berry acknowledged the honor of becoming the first
African-American woman to win the Oscar for best actress by thanking all
the performers who came before her.

On this installment of Collider Movie Talk (Monday January 25th 2016) we discuss the following issues:
It’s Monday which means it’s time for our weekend Box Office report brought to you by our friends at AMC Theatres. Coming in at #1 is the Leonardo DiCaprio film THE REVENANT, climbing up from the #2 position last week making $16 million dollars. Coming in at #2 is STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS with $14.25 million, up one spot from its #3 finish last week. In 3rd position is last week’s #1 film RIDE ALONG 2 making an additional $12.9 million. In 4th is the new Zac Efron/Robert De Niro film DIRTY GRANDPA making $11.5 million, and rounding out the top 5 is the new horror film THE BOY making $11.26 million on just a $10 million dollar budget.
Last night the Producers Guild Of America held its annual awards ceremony in Los Angeles and surprised many people by naming THE BIG SHORT as their outstanding produced feature film of the year. The award was accepted by the film’s producers Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. The PGA Awards is considered by many industry experts to be a major indicator as to what could win the Oscar.

Well speaking of the Oscars, the Academy has just announced sweeping changes in its membership process with the goal of doubling both its female and minority membership within the next 4 years. The announcement was released by the Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, herself an African-American woman, which said the following: “Beginning later this year, each new member’s voting status will last 10 years, and will be renewed if that new member has been active in motion pictures during that decade. In addition, members will receive lifetime voting rights after three ten-year terms; or if they have won or been nominated for an Academy Award. We will apply these same standards retroactively to current members. In other words, if a current member has not been active in the last 10 years they can still qualify by meeting the other criteria. Those who do not qualify for active status will be moved to emeritus status. Emeritus members do not pay dues but enjoy all the privileges of membership, except voting. This will not affect voting for this year’s Oscars.
At the same time, the Academy will supplement the traditional process in which current members sponsor new members by launching an ambitious, global campaign to identify and recruit qualified new members who represent greater diversity.
In order to immediately increase diversity on the Board of Governors, the Academy will establish three new governor seats that will be nominated by the President for three-year terms and confirmed by the Board.”
During the NFL playoffs yesterday Warner Bros released new TV spots for the upcoming BATMAN V SUPERMAN, one of which gave us a fuller version of Bruce Wayne’s conversation with Alfred regarding Superman bringing the war to us.
On the heels of the sad passing of David Bowie, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Tri-Star Pictures has had a Labyrinth reboot in the works for a while. According to the report Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman has been brought aboard to supply the screenplay. There is no definitive information if the new project would be a true reboot or some form of sequel.

Hussain J.Shishtari writes: Big fan of the show and the entire crew, my question is: Why do tv directors get overshadowed by the show's writers? And the opposite happens in movies, where writers don't get that recognition that film directors get.
Alex Gabel writes: Since Game of Thrones will eventually come to an end, a lot has been said about ending the series with one or more feature length films. Do you like this idea? And if this were to be the case, how well do you think it will perform at the box office given its worldwide success on the small screen?
Jason Martinez writes: Hi everyone my name is Jason! Started watching the show 4 months ago, thanks to running into to a random Jedi Council episode on Youtube. But I'm emailing you today to talk about Doctor Strange and the great potential it has. To me they have a phenomenal cast for the film so far from the cast we know of. But just seems like Marvel didn't get the right director or group of writers for this film. Most have all worked on the same movies that weren't all that good so I was just wondering how y'all felt about this.

This is a transfer I made from the 16mm film I own. This is an Academy Award nominated documentary of John Muir and the High Sierra's.
Muir was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is a prominent American conservation organization. The 211-mile (340 km) John Muir Trail, a hiking trail in the Sierra Nevada, was named in his honor.[2] Other such places include Muir Woods National Monument, Muir Beach, John Muir College, Mount Muir, Camp Muir and Muir Glacier.
In his later life, Muir devoted most of his time to the preservation of the Western forests. He petitioned the U.S. Congress for the National Park bill that was passed in 1890, establishing Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. The spiritual quality and enthusiasm toward nature expressed in his writings inspired readers, including presidents and congressmen, to take action to help preserve large nature areas. He is today referred to as the "Father of the National Parks" and the National Park Service has produced a short documentary about his life.

"Baptism of Fire is an US Army documentary that addresses the anxiety associated with going into combat for the first time. Part of the WWII U.S. Army "Fighting Men" series of films. This 1943 Army training film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1944..." The cast includes Elisha Cook, Jr., as "Bill."
US Army Training Film TF21-2014
Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

Elisha Vanslyck Cook, Jr. (December 26, 1903 – May 18, 1995) was an American character actor, probably best remembered as the "gunsel" Wilmer, who tries to intimidate Humphrey Bogart's Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, but his acting career spanned more than 60 years, with roles in films such as The Big Sleep, Shane, The Killing, and House on Haunted Hill...
Career
Cook was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Elisha Vanslyck Cook, Sr., a pharmacist. He grew up in Chicago, starting out in vaudeville and stock by the age of fourteen. He was a traveling actor in the East Coast and the Midwest before arriving in New York City, where Eugene O'Neill cast him in his play Ah, Wilderness!, which ran on Broadway for two years.
In film
In 1936, Cook settled in Hollywood and, after playing a series of college-aged parts, began a long period playing weaklings or sadistic losers and hoods. Cook's characters usually ended up being killed off (strangled, poisoned or shot). Hollywood's most notable fall guy for many years, he made a rare appearance in slapstick comedy in the cameo role of The Screenwriter in Hellzapoppin' (1941). In Universal's Phantom Lady (1944), he portrays a slimy, intoxicated nightclub-orchestra drummer to memorable effect. He had a substantial uncredited role as Bobo in I, the Jury (1953).
Cook may be best-remembered for playing Wilmer, the "gunsel", in The Maltese Falcon (1941), Other notable roles included the doomed informant Harry Jones in The Big Sleep (1946), a henchman (Marty Waterman) of the murderous title character in Born to Kill (1947)), the pugnacious ex-Confederate soldier 'Stonewall' Torrey in Shane (1953), and George Peatty, the shady, cuckolded husband in Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956). He also appeared in William Castle's horror film House on Haunted Hill (1959) and Rosemary's Baby (1968).
In television
Cook appeared on American television. He played a private detective in an episode of Adventures of Superman television series entitled Semi-Private Eye (1953). That same season, he guest starred on NBC's The Dennis Day Show. In 1960 he was cast in the episode, "The Hermit", of the ABC sitcom The Real McCoys, with Walter Brennan. He appeared as Jeremy Hake in the episode "The Bequest" of the ABC western series, The Rebel (1960), starring Nick Adams. He appeared in the second episode of ABC's crime drama, The Fugitive.
Cook made two guest appearances on the CBS courtroom drama series Perry Mason. In 1958 he played Art Crowley in "The Case of the Pint-Sized Client," and in 1964 he played Reelin' Peter Rockwell in "The Case of the Reckless Rockhound". Cook played lawyer Samuel T. Cogley in the Star Trek episode "Court Martial" (1967), Isaac Isaacson on the Batman television series, Weasel Craig in Salem's Lot, and later had a long-term recurring role as Honolulu crime lord "Ice Pick" on CBS's Magnum, P.I.. He also appeared in The Bionic Woman episode, "Once a Thief" (1977)...

Title: "Charly" based on Flowers For Algernon
Year: 1968
Genre: Drama
Though a more recent version of Flowers For Algernon was made in the early 00s, this version, titled "Charly" was made in 1968 and stays true to the novella of Flowers For Algernon.
Cliff Robertson won the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Charly. Besides winning an Academy Award, Flowers for Algernon was nominated for a Hugo but lost to 2001: A Space Odyssey for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation.
While the book Flowers For Algernon is taught in many high schools it has also been banned by many high schools. Not only was the book version controversial, but the Best Actor award to Cliff Robertson was the first time an Academy Award winner was put in doubt because of the heavy politicking and marketing the preceded that year's Academy Awards.

With the Marines at Tarawa is a 1944 short propaganda documentary film directed by Louis Hayward. It used authentic footage taken at the Battle of Tarawa to tell the story of the American servicemen from the time they get the news that they are to participate in the invasion to the final taking of the island and raising of the Stars and Stripes.
The film is in full color and uses no actors, making it a valuable historical document. The documentary showed more gruesome scenes of battle than other war films to date. According to the documentary The War, President Roosevelt himself gave approval for showing the film, against the wishes of many advisors.
Since the pictures were far too graphic to meet the standards of Hollywood producers and distributors, only the President could grant permission for its release to the general public. President Roosevelt consulted the only man who was present at the Battle of Tarawa that he personally knew and trusted, Time-Life photographer Robert Sherrod. Quoting Sherrod, "I tell the President the truth. Our soldiers on the front want people back home to know that they don't knock the hell out of them every day of every battle. They want people to understand that war is a horrible, nasty business, and to say otherwise is to do a disservice to those who died." Based on Sherrod's prompting, FDR agreed to release the film, uncensored.
The film won the 1945 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject.

Monster Maker Interview with Oscar Winner Christien Tinsley
FULL STORY here: http://bit.ly/1bUjX3o
This is an in-depth interview with Academy Award winning, lead special makeup effects artist Christien Tinsley, owner and operator of Tinsley Studios and Tinsley Transfers.
Christien's calling as an effects artist came at a young age. In our interview, he recalls adventures in makeup effects from nearly defacing a friend in his first attempt at a plaster life-cast to mowing lawns in order to afford to buy dental alginate.
An early association with Steve Johnson at his XFX honed his craft and encouraged Christien's creative problem-solving approach to effects work. Though perhaps Christien's best known achievement, one for which he received an Academy Award for technical achievement, was the prosthetic transfer.
