Takhār (Persian: تخار) is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan. It was established in 1964 when Qataghan Province was divided into three provinces: Baghlan, Kunduz and Takhar. It is in the north-east of the country. Its capital is Taloqan. Its salt mines are one of Afghanistan's major mineral resources. General Mohammed Daud Daud, the Deputy Minister of the Interior for Counter Narcotics in Afghanistan before he was killed, was a former governor of the Takhar province. The current governor is Abdul Jabbar Taqwa.
Takhar also holds notoriety as the location where Afghan mujahideen leader Ahmad Shah Massoud was assassinated on 9 September 2001 by suspected al-Qaeda agents.
The major ethnic groups in the province are Uzbeks and Tajiks followed by Pashtuns and Hazara, and also has a population of Kuchis whose numbers vary in different seasons. Since the people of Takhar take revenge on Pashtuns for the crimes the Taliban (mainly Pashtuns) did to non-Pashtuns, the number of Pashtuns decreases like in some other districts and provinces of northern Afghanistan.

Sharbat Gula (Pashto: شربت ګله) (pronounced [ˈʃaɾbat]) (born ca. 1972) is an Afghan woman who was the subject of a famous photograph by journalist Steve McCurry. Gula was living as a refugee in Pakistan during the time of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan when she was photographed. The image brought her recognition when it was featured on the cover of the June 1985 issue of National Geographic Magazine at a time when she was approximately 12 years old. Gula was known throughout the world simply as "the Afghan Girl" until she was formally identified in early 2002. The photograph has been likened to Leonardo da Vinci's painting of the Mona Lisa and is sometimes popularly referred to as "the Afghan Mona Lisa".[unreliable source?]
Pashtun by ethnicity, Gula was orphaned during the Soviet Union's bombing of Afghanistan and sent to the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in Pakistan in 1984. Her village was attacked by Soviet helicopter gunships sometime in the early 1980s. The Soviet strike killed her parents — forcing her, her siblings and grandmother to hike over the mountains to the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in neighboring Pakistan.[unreliable source?]

The militants took control of the Darqad district in Takhar province in the early hours of Wednesday. Police say security forces withdrew from the district after six hours of fighting. There’s no official information on casualties, but Taliban claim they have killed twelve police officers and wounded several others. They say two of their gunmen were also killed as the militants captured government buildings, including police headquarters. The fallen district lies on the border with Tajikistan and was rattled by Monday’s earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan. The powerful jolt has reportedly killed at least 15 people and injured more than 40 others there.

At least 18 people have been killed, including 12 students at a girls' school in Afghanistan's Takhar province as the result of a stampede, the Associated Press reported.
Five people in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have reportedly died in collapsed houses, according to a rescue official. And one other person died because of a fallen roof, according to state-run Pakistani TV.
Reports from the Associated Press say at least 45 people, mainly in Afghanistan and Pakistan, have died.
U.S. Geological Survey listed the earthquake in Afghanistan at an "orange alert level."
"Significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread," the agency said. "Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response."

President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian military to take "extremely tough" action against any threat to its forces in Syria. Any targets threatening its forces must be "immediately destroyed", he said.
