STORYLINE:
Afghan President Hamid Karzai met the leader of Pakistan's largest opposition party, Benazir Bhutto, in Islamabad on Thursday during a two-day visit to Pakistan.
After the meeting at Karzai's hotel in Pakistan's capital, Bhutto told reporters they had discussed means of combating the extremism and terrorism troubling the region along with trade and other issues.
"I explained to (Afghan) President (Hamid) Karzai that the Pakistan People's Party hoped to win the elections and form the government and we looked forward to working very closely with Afghanistan," Bhutto told reporters.
"We to believe that it is essential for both of our countries, and indeed the larger Muslim world, to work to protect the interests of the Islamic civilisation by eliminating extremism and terrorism," she added.
Bhutto, who returned from exile in October to lead her opposition party in January 8 parliamentary elections, has repeatedly accused Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf of failing to curb the rise of Islamic militants since he seized power in a 1999 coup.
During an unusually cordial meeting on Wednesday, Karzai and Musharraf pledged to share intelligence and tighten border controls to quash rising militant attacks.
Talks between the two leaders, who frequently argue over the source of cross-border attacks, came amid a wave of violence in Pakistan blamed on local Islamic extremists in the largely lawless border region.
A recent US intelligence report indicated that al-Qaida may be regrouping in North Waziristan, a tribal region where militants have staged almost daily attacks against Pakistani security forces in recent months.

The Afghan president has criticized Pakistan over the recent wave of attacks that rocked his country.
Ashraf Ghani said the last few days have shown that camps for training militants and bomb-producing factories are still running as before in Pakistan. He further added that his country hoped for peace but instead received messages of war. Ghani also said that he held a telephone conversation with the Pakistani prime minister on the matter. His remarks came a few hours after a deadly blat near the international airport in capital Kabul. Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the bombing that left several people dead. The attack follows a wave of deadly bombings in the Afghan capital on Thursday and Friday which claimed dozens of lives.

Afghan president Ashraf Ghani lambasted neighboring Pakistan today over a recent wave of insurgent attacks in the capital Kabul that killed at least 56 people.
"The last few days have shown that suicide bomber training camps and bomb-producing factories which are killing our people are as active as before in Pakistan," Ghani told a news conference.
"We hoped for peace but we are receiving messages of war from Pakistan."
Pakistan has historically supported the Taliban insurgents and many Afghans accuse it of nurturing militant sanctuaries on its soil in the hope of maintaining influence in Afghanistan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wished Afghan President Ashraf Ghani a happy birthday - only for Mr Ghani to explain he had got the wrong day.
Mr Modi had tweeted his best wishes to Mr Ghani, writing: "Praying for your long life & exceptional health and a joyful journey ahead".
Leading Mr Ghani to gently point out his birthday is, in fact, on 19 May.
Mr Ghani's profile on Google lists his birthday as being on 12 February, which may explain the mistake.
It is not known if Mr Modi himself wrote the erroneous tweet. His posts are reportedly written by his social media manager, Hiren Joshi.
And it is unlikely Mr Ghani, who is at Munich Security Conference, wrote the polite reply, as any posts written by the president himself are signed AG.
Given there at least 22.2m Twitter users in India and that Mr Ghani has more than 176,000 followers, the mistake was spotted by plenty of people.
One Twitter user in India, replied to Mr Ghani: "We don't care when you b'day is , if our honourable PM has wished you today, we will celebrate it today."
Another, Richard Rego, said it was "the biggest international joke from someone occupying the biggest chair in the biggest democracy".

U.S. Military Spokesman: ISIS Is 'Operationally Emergent' In Afghanistan

The situation in Afghanistan is "manageable" at the moment, despite concerns about an "operationally emergent" ISIS presence in the eastern part of the country; Taliban threats to Kunduz in the north; and an ongoing Afghan military offensive against the Taliban in Helmand Province in the south, a U.S. official told reporters on Thursday. Brigadier General Wilson Shoffner, a spokesman for the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan, said Afghan President Ashraf Ghani considers ISIS/ISIL (also called Daesh) "to be a significant potential threat to his national security. He takes it very seriously. We take it very seriously as well. What we want is to prevent Daesh from becoming any more capable than it currently is in Afghanistan. "And I would go so far as to say we want to deal with Daesh here, as opposed to somewhere else in the world." The U.S. is now fighting Islamic State terrorists in Iraq and Syria, and it is also monitoring the spread of those terrorists into Libya and Afghanistan.
"Our characterization of Daesh remains that we see them as operationally emergent," Shoffner said. "What we're not seeing is Daesh having the ability from either Iraq or Syria to orchestrate operations in Afghanistan. We're not seeing Daesh having the ability to conduct operations in Afghanistan in more than one place at a time. "We are seeing Daesh attempting to do low-level recruiting and propaganda in various places in the country. Almost all of those, with the exception of Nangarhar province in the east, are unsuccessful. So, very, very low level activity, with the exception of the east. "And in the east, in Nangarhar province, we're seeing Daesh attempting to establish a base of operations there. Afghan Security Forces have had quite a bit of success against them. In the past few weeks, we, the U.S., have increased significantly our pressure on Daesh. Part of this was enabled by the recent change in authorities, which has given us additional flexibility against Daesh.
"So, Daesh, currently, is contained largely to four or five districts in the southern part of Nangarhar province. This is the area of eastern Afghanistan, that's south of Jalalabad, along the Pakistani border, and is the area where Tora Bora was. It's very rugged, it has been an insurgent safe haven for many, many years, and it continues to be." Shoffner put the number of Islamic State fighters in eastern Afghanistan at 1,000 to 3,000. "Throughout the country, it's very, very small numbers. Largely, it is rebranding. We're seeing primarily former (Pakistani Taliban), some former Taliban, pledging to Daesh. We're not exactly sure what their motivation is. I can tell you that, ideologically, Daesh does not resonate with most people in Afghanistan." (According to the Associated Press, the United States has expanded its fight against the Islamic State group in Afghanistan, launching 20 airstrikes in the eastern part of the country in the last three weeks, following a decision by the Obama administration to give the Pentagon the authority to conduct airstrikes against IS in Afghanistan.)
Kunduz - In the north, Shoffner said Afghan government and Afghan security forces are "watching the situation in Kunduz very closely. They were concerned over what happened in Kunduz in the fall, but I can tell you, they are determined to not let that happen again." Last September, the Taliban captured the major city of Kunduz, its first such victory since 2001. The Afghan National Security Forces, supported by U.S. air strikes, retook the city several weeks later. But in the process, U.S. forces mistakenly bombed a Doctors Without Borders hospital, killing around two dozen civilians, including medical staff and patients. Shoffner described the security situation in Kunduz as "stable" right now, although the Taliban is believed to be operating outside the city, in the northern part of Kunduz province. The Afghans have boosted combat forces in the north "so they are better postured to deal with the security situation," Shoffner said.

“Our brave pilots and committed officers will revive the Air Force,” said His Excellency, President Ghani, during a ceremony and airshow at the Afghan National Air Force base in Kabul, February 11th.
President Ghani reaffirmed the government's commitment to invest in educating a new generation of Afghan patriots. The exhibition featured aircraft from the AAF’s arsenal. Since last year, the Afghan Air Force has increased its mission capabilities in several areas, including aerial support, known as aerial fires, for ground troops. In 2014, 85 aerial support missions were conducted. In 2015, that number rose to 4,485. Among the aircraft shown, were the new A-29 light attack aircrafts, as well as several types of helicopters and transport planes.

Afghanistan has been at the center of the geopolitical grand game for centuries. With complex local, regional and international interests overlapping, the prospects for security in the country remain uncertain. Can the Afghan government reach reconciliation with the Taliban and maintain independence from foreign influence? And how will it contend with the growing Islamic State footprint on its territory? Oksana is joined by the former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, to thrash out these issues.

Afghan tribal elites concluded a four-day Loya Jirga on Sunday, endorsing the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the United States, which allows a residual US troops to remain in Afghanistan beyond 2014.
A unanimous majority of 2,500-member Jirga called on President Hamid Karzai to sign the document by the end of this year. But, the Afghan president laid out three pre-conditions before signing the security pact: transparent elections in April 2014, no raids on Afghan homes and a breakthrough in talks with the Taliban.

http://democracynow.org - We are on the road in Venice, Italy, the site of the Venice Biennale, the oldest and most prestigious international biennial art exhibition in the world. We are broadcasting from the Creative Time Summit here at the Venice Biennale, which on Tuesday featured a public discussion between Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his daughter, the acclaimed artist Mariam Ghani, who is based in Brooklyn. She joins us to discuss how she has worked for the past decade on a number of art projects looking at how the United States responded to the Sept. 11 attacks. Along with the artist Chitra Ganesh, Ghani created an "Index of the Disappeared" — a physical archive documenting post-9/11 detentions, deportations and renditions. Ghani and Ganesh also created "The Guantanamo Effect" — an interactive digital archive defining, illustrating and linking key terms and events in the so-called global war on terror.

The Islamic State has grown out of the ashes of failed states stretching from South Asia to the Middle East, melding medieval-style brutality with modern technology and organisation. And though the international community has mounted a response, its effectiveness has been stymied by shortcomings in cooperation. Has the ecology of terror become the new norm? And can increased cooperation in the Asian region help meet the challenge of spreading terrorism? Oksana is joined by Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the President of Afghanistan, to analyse these issues.

Talk to Al Jazeera - When Taliban offer you gold: Afghan youth in crisis

Among the hundreds of thousands of refugees entering Europe a significant number is made up of young men from Afghanistan. Last year, more than 100,000 Afghans fled to Europe and the exodus continues.
But why are so many Afghans leaving their home country?
In Kabul's Kote Sangi neighbourhood, painters, carpenters, plasterers, and other manual workers sit outside waiting for someone to come by and hire them, even if only for a few hours.
This scene is replicated throughout the Afghan capital as thousands of casual workers hope to earn a dollar or more a day, the desperation etched on many faces. But their chances aren't good. These men don't have the family or the political connections often needed to get a job. And Afghanistan's unemployment rate is estimated to be at 40 percent or higher.
Afghanistan's economy still depends heavily on international aid and 61 percent of the country's operating budget is funded by foreign donors.
The withdrawal of more than 100,000 NATO troops, and a scaling down of aid has shrunk the economy drastically. Building bases for the troops, staffing them, moving food and water to them, injected billions of dollars into the economy and employed tens of thousands of Afghans for years.
In response to the economic downturn, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has launched the National Employment Programme in November 2015 to give thousands of Afghans job opportunities.
But will he succeed? How do do young Afghans feel about their country's economic future?
On this week's Talk to Al Jazeera in the Field, we examine the job market in Afghanistan. How does it really work? And what jobs, if any, offer some kind of future for the young people who decide to stay in Afghanistan?
We talk to business leaders who are looking for workers; the head of one of Afghanistan's biggest recruitment companies; and job seeker Abdel Fatah, who studied sociology at Kabul University and wants to stay and work in his country.
