As each 15,000-pound cable whipped down through seat after seat, down went the massive roof of Pontiac’s Silverdome stadium. These huge steel ropes went swinging through the stadium, slicing through the stands, causing destruction with the force of a bomb to butterfly wings, a hot knife through soft butter, decimating each concrete wall like it was nothing, knocking out entire sections of stairs and bending metal like a child angry at their Play-Doh. We could see where these had cut through, as they had created a straight line uninterrupted in even the slightest bit by any obstacle standing in their path.
The idea of a grand stadium for Michigan was proposed in 1966, with urban planner Don Davidson acting as partial designer and architect on the project. The Pontiac Silverdome Stadium was built for $55.7 million dollars, completed and opened in 1975. Architects O’Dell, Hewlett and Luckenbach had acted as the dome’s main architects, fashioning the design after the Ancient Roman Colosseum. In 2009, the stadium was sold at auction for $583,000. This exhibits quite a great financial shift in the area’s economy, heavily showcasing how much has changed.
Nearly 1.5 million cubic yards of earth were moved during the construction of this huge stadium, while 1,700 tons of structural steel held the enormous structure together. Overhead, covering the entire stadium was a dome; a 10-acre Teflon-coated fiberglass roof to encase what would come to be a central stadium for Super Bowls, concerts, events, hey maybe even the Pope would grace the seats of this stadium. Oh wait, he did.

Pontiac was an automobile brand that was established in 1926 as a companion make for General Motors' Oakland. Quickly overtaking its parent in popularity, it supplanted the Oakland brand entirely by 1933 and, for most of its life, became a companion make for Chevrolet. Pontiac was sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico by General Motors (GM). Pontiac was marketed as the performance division of General Motors for many years, specializing in mainstream performance vehicles. Pontiac was relatively more popular in Canada, where for much of its history it was marketed as a low-priced vehicle.
On April 27, 2009, amid ongoing financial problems and restructuring efforts, GM announced it would discontinue the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010 and focus on four core brands in North America: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC. The last Pontiacs were built in late 2009, with the final dealer franchises expiring October 31, 2010.
The Pontiac Spring and Wagon Works was incorporated in July 1899 by Albert G. North and Harry G. Hamilton. By 1905 they had taken over the manufacturing of the Rapid Truck (from the Rapid Motor Vehicle Co.) that had been introduced two years earlier. In 1907 they decided to produce an automobile.

As each 15,000-pound cable whipped down through seat after seat, down went the massive roof of Pontiac’s Silverdome stadium. These huge steel ropes went swinging through the stadium, slicing through the stands, causing destruction with the force of a bomb to butterfly wings, a hot knife through soft butter, decimating each concrete wall like it was nothing, knocking out entire sections of stairs and bending metal like a child angry at their Play-Doh. We could see where these had cut through, as they had created a straight line uninterrupted in even the slightest bit by any obstacle standing in their path.
The idea of a grand stadium for Michigan was proposed in 1966, with urban planner Don Davidson acting as partial designer and architect on the project. The Pontiac Silverdome Stadium was built for $55.7 million dollars, completed and opened in 1975. Architects O’Dell, Hewlett and Luckenbach had acted as the dome’s main architects, fashioning the design after the Ancient Roman Colosseum. In 2009, the stadium was sold at auction for $583,000. This exhibits quite a great financial shift in the area’s economy, heavily showcasing how much has changed.
Nearly 1.5 million cubic yards of earth were moved during the construction of this huge stadium, while 1,700 tons of structural steel held the enormous structure together. Overhead, covering the entire stadium was a dome; a 10-acre Teflon-coated fiberglass roof to encase what would come to be a central stadium for Super Bowls, concerts, events, hey maybe even the Pope would grace the seats of this stadium. Oh wait, he did.

The Pontiac Silverdome Stadium was built for $55.7 million dollars, completed and opened in 1975. Architects O’Dell, Hewlett and Luckenbach had acted as the dome’s main architects, fashioning the design after the Ancient Roman Colosseum. In 2009, the stadium was sold at auction for $583,000. This exhibits quite a great financial shift in the area’s economy, heavily showcasing how much has changed.
Nearly 1.5 million cubic yards of earth were moved during the construction of this huge stadium, while 1,700 tons of structural steel held the enormous structure together. Overhead, covering the entire stadium was a dome; a 10-acre Teflon-coated fiberglass roof to encase what would come to be a central stadium for Super Bowls, concerts, events, hey maybe even the Pope would grace the seats of this stadium. Oh wait, he did.

Today we're bringing you this spectacular 1989 Pontiac Firebird Turbo Trans-Am 20th Anniversary Indy 500 Pace Car. Pontiac only made this model in 1989 specifically to pace the 73rd Indy 500. Total production numbered 1,555 units. GM kept 5 of them and sold 1,550 to the public. This is #1,221 of the 1,555 ever made. This example is highly original with only the battery and tires being replaced.
Under the hood is the original hi-po 231ci turbocharged V6 engine from the Buick GNX complete with an the original intercooler, turbo, and electronic fuel injection. It is mated to the original Turbo-Hydramatic 200-4R four-speed automatic transmission. The car also features the WS6 performance suspension consisting of independent front suspension with MacPherson struts, coil springs and anti-roll bar, live rear axle with trailing links and torque arm, four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes from the 1LE, and 16"x8" Aluminum wheels.
As equipped, the new Trans-Am redefined the term "high performance" with 13-second quarter-mile times and top speeds exceeding 150 mph. It was the first unmodified car to pace the Indianapolis 500. Originally priced at $9,000 over the cost of the 5.7-liter GTA and with just 1,554 other examples produced, this 20th Anniversary Indy Pace-Car Trans-Am remains one of the rarest and desirable Pontiac's ever assembled.
